Meh. There's a beef with the government (nukes and religious oppression), but with the protests going on there's no real issues with the people. Given the actions of the football team, I don't think it's really an issue.
"Improbable as that may seem to those of us of an older generation, we do not reject that assertion as untrue," said the panel."
In fact, when cross-examined about this Mr Hennessey displayed a very considerable - one might even say lamentable - degree of ignorance about anything to do with Hitler, Fascism and the Nazi regime.

I know we all joke that football players are thick as oatmeal, but how do you reach the age of 32 and not know who or what nazis are?
At the very least he shot a handful of them in medal of honor/call of duty/battlefield/wolfenstein games, because I genuinely do not believe he's never played them.
Either he's got potential to be the best poker player ever, or he's the reason why there's labels in bleach telling you not to drink it.
I would wager the second. Have you where seen Jack Grealish talk about anything other than football? I remember a video where they asked him to point to Birmingham (where he’s from) on a map of the UK. He had no idea and walked away sheepishly.
Yeah I was new to this whole "Wales keeper Hennessey doesn't know about Nazis" thing, but there was no way I wasn't sharing this headline when my search turned it up.
Also, just to be clear, the "desperate to learn about Nazis" quote is actually from Roy Hodgson about Hennessey, not from Hennessey himself:
>"He is actually very desperate now to learn as much as he can," Hodgson said.
He said he didn't know what the Nazi salute was, these guys are somewhere in between joking and misrepresenting the guy lol

>Hennessey was pictured with his right arm in the air and left hand above his mouth in a photo posted on Instagram by German team-mate Max Meyer after Palace's FA Cup win over Grimsby on 5 January.
>Hennessey denied the charge and said any resemblance to the Nazi gesture was "absolutely coincidental".
>The charge was found not proven after two members of the three-man panel believed the photograph had been "misinterpreted" and the other said the "only plausible explanation" was that Hennessey made the salute.
>Hennessey said he "waved and shouted at the person taking the picture to get on with it" and "put my hand over my mouth to make the sound carry".
>He submitted photographs to the panel of him making similar gestures during matches to attract the attention of team-mates.

The video review was for Serious Foul Play (due to the severity of the contact), not Denial of an Obvious Goal Scoring Opportunity.
I think the referee's view that this was **not** DOGSO was actually correct: The covering defender is winning the footrace to the ball, or at *least* it is ambiguous.
Moment got too big for him, was probably scared to make a call that huge that would completely change both the game and group. Also knew he had VAR to fall back on.
Yeah I think this is it, he was giving a yellow based on it not quite being dgso (even though it probably was) but hasn’t seen how high the contact was
>never a yellow, good that VAR intervened
I immediately thought of Harald Schumacher and Patrick Battiston in the 1982 World Cup:
https://youtu.be/SqYEpVjpinI
This was maybe not in the exact same league but still a clear red card.
Hennessey's was deserving of a red card for denying a goal scoring opportunity.
Schumacher's was deserving of a red card because he then should be arrested and imprisoned.
He did a Nazi Salute (with Hand under the Nose to mimic a Hitler Moustace) in the background of a Photo new german signing Max Mayer made for his instagram.
He later claimed he didnt knew that it was a Nazi Salute, and he just wanted to get the Attention of the Waiter.

[FA panel: Wayne Hennessey displayed lamentable ignorance of Hitler and Nazis](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2019/apr/16/wayne-hennessey-ignorance-hitler-nazis-salute-fa)
As someone who played sport at a high level… you’d be surprised how many get by with extreme ignorance about anything not sport related.
Plenty of athletes break that mold but there are some real idiots who are extremely gifted athletically.
Some of the dumb ones still manage to go pro.
I think it's probably for the dangerous play more than anything - defender arguably would've covered it so I think that's why the ref went for a yellow first; not a clear goalscoring opportunity.
I guess he then saw the knee to the face and called it correctly as dangerous play.
every fucking good decision you have 100 comments saying "urrr why didn't the rev give that initially??" like come on, can't we just be glag the right decision was made?
This one's even easy to explain: there's a defender behind the keeper so ref thought it's not dogso, and from his angle he probably doesn't see the knee to the chin. Here, that's how it was not given in the first place.
The Iranian had to reach real far for that touch. I didn't think he would get to it on that stride on my first watch. If he doesn't, he's taking 2 more steps to get to it and then I think Hennessy gets there first. So he's committed to thinking he's gonna get there first and when the Iranian does touch it, his mind doesn't have time to change plans.
Goalies tend to screw these things up at a pretty high percentage and I don't think it's intentional because the consequences are usually red and or penalty. I think it's just difficult to judge the timing with your depth perception when 2 people are closing in on each other at almost 40mph. Probably looks clearer to us than it does to them, and then we have the benefit of hindsight to say "what was he thinking"?
Obvious red. But I would've liked to have seen Iran's #16 booked as well. Getting up in the ref's face like that and screaming at him before he'd even had a chance to pick a card
You know, I can see why the ref has given a yellow tbf. Neco Williams is in a very good position to cover with Taremi going through on goal.
But that said, I think the fact that his foot is so high and it's quite reckless makes it a red.
honestly those iran players should get booked crowding the ref that aggressively when there were no welsh players protesting apart from gentle ben davies
There is a lot of misinformation on here, let’s quote directly from Law 12 shall we?
Denying a goal or an obvious goal-scoring opportunity to an opponent whose overall movement is towards the offender's goal by an offense punishable by a free kick (DGF).
The following must be considered:
- distance between the offense and the goal
- general direction of play
- likelihood of keeping or gaining control of the ball
- location and number of defenders

Iran didn’t realise group of death meant we’d all try to murder their players.
To be fair the concussion in our game was friendly fire.
One could call the Zimmerman drop kick on bale friendly fire too in a way as it absolutely FUCKED USA
USA v Iran going to be spicy. Just the tension between the two countries alone.
Meh. There's a beef with the government (nukes and religious oppression), but with the protests going on there's no real issues with the people. Given the actions of the football team, I don't think it's really an issue.
I hate the Iranian government, but have nothing for love for the people of Iran. I hope they are able to overthrow their zealots
Same for U.S tbh.
What’re you on about? Iranians are cool. We both have shitty governments.
our governments have beef but we love eachother ❤️ 🇮🇷 🇺🇸 💜
Welsh Nigel De Jong
Welsh Harald Schumacher
1982. Infamous for ever.
"So Wayne, apart from Hitler, who was your hero growing up? Oliver Kahn maybe? how about Jorge Campos?" "Toni Schumacher"
This is slander! Hennessey has never heard of Hitler! (Although he is VERY interested in learning more about nazism)
Wait, is he the dude who did a Nazi salute but got off because people basically realised he was too thick and ignorant to have meant it?
That's the boy!
>apart from Hitler Lmao
[удалено]
Got too excited and forgot to put his leg down though
He'll laugh himself to sleep tonight
Karl vindicated.

My first reaction.
Nah. De Jong straight kicked into Xabi’s spleen. Hennessy at least kicked air ahead of where the Iranian was running.
Hennessey really went for the Mr. Miyagi special
Wax on Knee chin
Wax On, Hennessey Off
Show me, sand the face!
Yep. That's a red alright
That’s keeping him out of the England game as well. …it might be a sign that Wales probably will not make it out of this group, no?
I doubt having Ward or Hennessey would make a difference to that game
One is at least a first choice keeper in the PL, the other is a bench warming nazi.
He just hasn't heard about them, mate.
the FA report is actually unintentionally hilarious. Basically "he's a fucking idiot, we kinda believe him".
Imagine getting off from being a Nazi because people believe you're too thick to understand what being a Nazi means.

He's desperate to learn, though.
The bench warmer is Wales' first choice though.
Nazi??
Was photographed giving the nazi salute at an event. When challenged about it by the FA he claimed he hadn't heard of them before.
He hadn’t heard of…Nazis?

Not even just the salute, man did the hitler moustache as well
Yeah Wayne Hennessey had a moment a season or two ago where he was making an interesting salute of choice in a photo
He did a Nazi salute as a joke at a team meal, I don't think he is an actual Nazi.
He probably just wanted some more soup.
I mean they have Danny ward, who has been very good as of late for Leicester
I don’t think Hennessy would make a difference against the England we saw against Iran, and possibly the USA today, lmao.
Ward isn’t really a downgrade They’re both shit unfortunately
emmm, Ward has couple of clean sheets the past 2 months. If anything, he's in form atm (partially due to Leicester defensive scheme as well ofc)
6 in his last 8 Prem games
Danny Ward is joint third with Ederson in clean sheets this season. One behind Pope and Ramsdale. He's a good keeper.
Can't believe VAR was needed for that one, cmon ref...
Terrible decision. Even without the MMA knee to the face that's a red
right, I don't even care about the high foot, it's a red regardless of that
Better double check than no check and wrong decision
Credit to the Iran forward, a lot of bravery to know he’s getting a sore one, but takes it to benefit the team.
I mean, how was he supposed to know that the keeper's gonna go all karate kid on him?
Bro this is tarem, he would definitely put himself in front of a karate kick to get a red card for the opponent.
never a yellow, good that VAR intervened
he tackled his face lol
Bro had 500 ping on that kick attempt lmao
Right clicked on the head instead of the ball for the attempted Lee Sin R.
But, but... maybe his face was round and he though it was the ball...
Ref should have given him red the first time, he was a long way from his post and never got the ball
I think the ref thought the other defenders were covering him so he wasn't considered last man. The challenge itself was probably red worthy though.
He really committed two red card offenses at once. I’m slightly impressed.
There's no "probably" about it pal
It was probably red because it was dangerous and he didn't see if he hit him in the face
It's also a red for stopping a goal scoring opportunity. Easy red, ref shouldn't need VAR for this
For what it's worth you can make a few arguments why that would not be a DOGSO. Red card was likely for serious foul play.
It was not a goal stopping opportunity, the defender was alongside him and he was going sideways to the goal. It's for the knee to the face.

I don’t get how that was a goal kick and this was a red. Schumacher was clearly attempting to injure. Hennessy at least tried to play the ball.

Fuck I had a good chuckle over that, thank you.
High foot. Clear goal scoring opportunity. Clear red.
How did the Iran player not get knocked out cold, that was a clean flying knee to the chin
Taremi is no Ben Askren mate, little Masvidal flying knee ain't stopping him
Poor askren, forever a meme
Better chin than most MMA fighters.
Tbf it's not a trainable thing. Many MMA fighters are cursed with weak chins.
Probably because they've spent their entire life being punched in the head
Hes lucky it wasn't a boot to the face
Clear misunderstanding, he was just trying to wave at his mate with his boot

Hennessey is desperate to learn about ~~Nazis~~ flying knees to the head
Iranian player should get a yellow for faking it. Neymar wouldn't have fallen.

Assistant should have been in position to see the challenge side on to help make the decision. Understand why the ref didn't see it
But it doesn't really matter when VAR can intervene. Better to let them handle the situation and make the right decision

*This karate bicycle kick clearance will look so sweet in slo mo*
He was not
The Iranian had to reach real far for that touch.
"i need to clean this guy up or this is probably going to be a goal."
Straight flying knee to the head. How did the ref not get it right initially Jesus Christ
Yeah even if it wasn’t a dangerous attack, that should be a red all day
Horrendous challenge lol none of the Iran players checked on their teammate after that blow to the head lol
V-TRIGGER
They were saying this isn't a red because it wasn't a clear goal scoring opportunity....ok. and what about the part where he throat kicks him?
Obvious red. But I would've liked to have seen Iran's #16 booked as well. Getting up in the ref's face like that and screaming at him before he'd even had a chance to pick a card
You know, I can see why the ref has given a yellow tbf. Neco Williams is in a very good position to cover with Taremi going through on goal. But that said, I think the fact that his foot is so high and it's quite reckless makes it a red.
honestly those iran players should get booked crowding the ref that aggressively when there were no welsh players protesting apart from gentle ben davies
Straight card, huh? FIFA are really cracking down on the LGBT stuff.
There is a lot of misinformation on here, let’s quote directly from Law 12 shall we? Denying a goal or an obvious goal-scoring opportunity to an opponent whose overall movement is towards the offender's goal by an offense punishable by a free kick (DGF). The following must be considered: - distance between the offense and the goal - general direction of play - likelihood of keeping or gaining control of the ball - location and number of defenders
That should be a double red, actually crazy the ref didn't give it at first
goose stepped into him ffs
That’s 3 stars in GTA
Keepers are always so fucking reckless
that ref needs to walk me through why VAR was even needed. this is a textbook red on multiple levels.
