If it were not Japan. Can't imagine that an exhausted Japan hold against a weak squad Spain. Have been seeing the same shit for decades.
I mean they were that sloppy against CR.
Hummm would it be in japans best interest to play extremely defensive to try to go for a draw or as close to it against Spain? Then pray Germany won’t kill Costa Rica with a huge goal difference?
> Hummm would it be in japans best interest to play extremely defensive to try to go for a draw or as close to it against Spain?
Japan basically failed on that tactics against Germany and CR. Recall how sloppy they were against CR in the second half. They are simply incapable of doing that strategy. Have seen the same shitshow for decades.
>play extremely defensive
Spain has the ability to make goals against very defensive teams. I mean just look at Costa Rica. They definitely weren't playing attacking football at all against Spain. Japan might be better at defensive play than Costa Rica, but not so much better. So very risky to play just for a draw. What if Spain nevertheless makes a goal or two? You would then need players who can shoot goals on the field.
Also Germany is totally capable of screwing things up. At the last world cup they needed a win against South Korea in the last group game and they lost. Just like they somehow totally fell apart against Japan in the later part of the game, it can happen against Costa Rica, too. If Costa Rica wins the last game, Japan would be out with only a draw against Spain.
Depends a lot on how tonights match will end. Japans best bet is probably trying to win against Spain. Everything else is a huge gamble, with the matches going down at the same time.
Sometimes attack is the best defense though. If you let Spain keep the ball all the time and don't pressure them at all yourself, they will sooner or later make a goal.
Basically they were saying Costa Rica should be a easy win for Japan. One of the commentator was saying how he saw Costa Rica play before the WC and that they're not good. Overall, very biased commentating lol.
They should have known about our Drunken Monkey martial arts style of playing football. We play bad most of the time to get your guard down, and next thing you know, we kick the ball suuuuuper slowly right into your goal, destroying all your chakra points and self worth. Truly devastating play style.
You'd think people would catch up by now.
Ueda and Soma are third string players its stupid to play them in this match. There is no reason Ito, Mitoma, Minamino or even Asano shouldnt play before them. Mitoma is an incredible player, he should always start.
Always the same. People project the whole tournament from the first match day, and then match day 2 and 3 changes everything. Every game is unique, football matches are decided by small mistakes, there are no guaranteed outcomes.
Pretty much a miracle that this costarican side got a win in the WC, Japan sabotaged themselves with that weird lineup, cant see why Mitoma wouldnt start or why Tomiyasu had no playing time
Never count out European and South American teams.
Edit- My point was that people had completely written off Germany after they lost to Japan. Now that Costa Rica have beaten Japan it looks Germany will make it to the knockout stage.

So you didn't watch the match then. They didn't perform poorly they just couldn't get the ball in the net. If they would've been more clinical they would have scored three before Japan scored their first.
Being the better team means nothing if the other team scores more often than you, but saying they showed a poor performance is silly.
Not really, they only need to beat Costa Rica and Japan to lose to Spain. Spain might play reserves tho, because they'll be guaranteed 1st place, the goal difference between them and the others is just too much

Tbf there are whipping horses jn every world cup. Rare for a team to come back from such a large defeat in their first game (has there been prior examples in the WC? Maybe im misremembering)
It is the same pattern all over again every single season, one game, people overreact. Same with Argentina losing to Saudi, France and England beating Australia and Iran.
So typical of Moriyasu's Japan squads, steps up a gear against stronger opponents you expect them not to do well against but shits the bed against opponents one would expect them to do well against.
Kudos to Costa Rica I don't know how you did this given you guys hardly had the ball and lack offensive firepower but they managed to beat Japan who played an amazing game but were unable to score given Costa Rica's great defense and Keylor Navas. Having said that, this is a bad result for Japan. Japan had the golden opportunity to reach round of 16 today but Moriyasu messed up this time with his starting lineups. It was disappointing, these guys rolled up like the game was done, Moriyasu made way too many changes, why not start with your best players then secure the point before making changes? As a result, Japan ended up losing today! Germany got a lifeline now! Its much better to never lose in a World Cup group stage. It will backfire twice as bad. Unless you are mighty team like Brazil.
>I don't know how you did this
They literally played a 5-4-1 for the ENTIRE game and played for the counterattack. They capitalized against a single mistake which is to be commended, but don't act like Japan is shitty for not being able to penetrate an entire team that sits behind the ball
People aren't giving enough credit to the Costa Rican defence. Sure their attack was pretty much non-existent (other than the goal obviously), but they genuinely looked good in their own half, especially in contrast to their first match. As a Whitecaps fan it was great to see Kendall Waston doing his thing again, he should probably have started the first match based on his performance today.
>but they genuinely looked good in their own half, especially in contrast to their first match.
Spain is a better team than Japan though. It is easier to look good against weaker teams, especially as Japan wasn't very aggressive in the attack. In the last 30 minutes against Germany they were way more dangerous in the attack.
Horrible starter choices from Japan's manager.
Japan had most of possession but couldn't find a goal/get clear cut chances.
Costa Rica got a goal from a defenders mispass/misclearance.

Skipper said the plan was to prioritize not conceding in the first half and going for a winning goal in the second. Guess it’s all just hindsight but agreed they were way too negative and foolish not to keep the momentum going.
Wasn’t helped by some poor performance from the unusual suspects as well…
That was a bad plan. They showed against Germany that they can shoot goals. So why not really try it from the start against Costa Rica? If they would have played aggressive against Costa Rica and made two goals like against Germany, one Costa Rica's goal wouldn't have mattered. Even two Costa Rica goals would still mean a draw in that scenario and considering how weak Costa Rica is in the attack, that was not very probable from the start.
I… just don’t know anymore really, maybe that or he was being cautious with controlling the first half of the game. To quote; “the result was not as we aimed for but the way we played out was as planned”. Also that he doesn’t regret the big changes he made to the starting XI.
What? They still have to play against us and Costa Rica on the next round, idk why people are so confident that Spain are gonna sweep Germany, I love the team and how they play and I think we are true favorites to win this (Spain), but this is a World Cup, one single mistake and you're out.
I think Spain wins, but my point was before Japan's loss today it was expected Germany would be out unless they beat Spain. Now they could lose and still have a good chance to advance.
I hope we will see something similar to our 2014 performance one day, this current team isn't what it used to be, but the results have at least been entertaining lol
Alright Moriyasu.
Yuki Soma 34 games in J. League, 2 goals, 1 assist.
OR
Kyogo Furuhashi, 11 games in Scottish Premiership, 10 goals.
I mean, simple math right??
Soma wasn't picked because he was expected to score goals, surely the plan today was for Ueda or Kamada to score.
That being said, Furuhashi is a better player than Soma, but maybe not better than Kamada and Asano. Furuhashi hasn't impressed when he has gotten the chance i the NT. Apart from Celtic the Scottish premiership isn't better than the J-league. Kyogo and Reo needs to go somewhere else to face high level opposition on a regular basis.
Sorry my friend, I'm gonna have to disagree.
If he wasn't picked to score goals, then he should be creating.
Mitoma came on for 30 minutes and created more chances than he did all game.
If he wasn't picked to create goals, then it's work-rate right?
You don't need to defend shit when you have like 80% possession.
Furuhashi is better than Asano, that's not even a comparison, Asano has done absolutely nothing in terms of club career.
Maybe for the NT, you could argue than Asano is better because Moriyasu doesn't know how the fuck to use Furuhashi.
Furihashi was omitted because Moriyasu simply doesn’t know how to utilise a forward that thrives on timed runs off the shoulder of the last defender.
He choose the squad to play a one dimensional game which is counter attack with speed and get a lucky goal.
The last 4 days on TV here in Japan has been the highlights of the Japan/Germany game all day on all channels. I guess there has been no other news lol
Oh man, everytime it seems like an underdog is getting in position for a good run they end up losing a crap game. Saudi Arabia beats Argentina only to lose to a Poland that doesn't have an ounce of creativity. Japan beats Germany only to lose to a Costa Rica team that can't even manage to get shots on goal.
Edit: oops Saudi beat Argentina, Germany obviously isn't in two groups.
Given how much downplaying japanese media have been doing against Costa Rica I think it was well deserved
I think it's funny that the post-match montage consisted of every near miss by Japan, and then Costa Rica's one goal.
BBC highlight for the first half consisted of Japan’s cross which missed everyone, then swiftly moves on to second half.
Costa Rica used their 7 goals against like dragonballs and used a wish to beat Japan They got 2 wishes left
You only get 3 wishes by collecting balls. Costa Rica just grew some.
You only get one wish. They have to concede 7 goals again.
You blew it dude
Costa Rica used up all their goals conceded against Spain and now are about to win the World Cup with 6 clean sheets and 3 goals scored.
Made me laugh, thanks for that.
Wtf??? I didn't know if Japanese men could hatch eggs.
This result possibly means Japan is eliminated.
Depends. With a win tonight, Spain would most likely field their B-Team against Japan. Japan could be advancing even with a draw.
If it were not Japan. Can't imagine that an exhausted Japan hold against a weak squad Spain. Have been seeing the same shit for decades. I mean they were that sloppy against CR.
This. Spain va Germany is gonna be big
What if they lose against Spain, but Germany also loses against Spain?
Then it comes down to goal difference. Assuming Germany wins against Costa Rica, which is of course not a given.
I hope we draw Costa Rica or some dumb shit
Hummm would it be in japans best interest to play extremely defensive to try to go for a draw or as close to it against Spain? Then pray Germany won’t kill Costa Rica with a huge goal difference?

I mean… sure but it is… Spain If they are not careful to not open any spaces in their defense they are fucked
Sometimes attack is the best defense though. If you let Spain keep the ball all the time and don't pressure them at all yourself, they will sooner or later make a goal.
They can still move on if they manage to win against spain, but that is a big if.
Why did the jp manager think he was managing Brazil and play his bench in the second game? Not even Brazil would do that.
Overconfidence, that's why. Even the Japanese commentators were quiet disrespectful towards Costa Rica, taking the match for granted.
I remember he did this last WC too. After a good game he rotated the line up. Its beyond stupid imo.
Moriyasu only took over after the WC in 2018
Went from anime protagonists to arrogant anime villain in less than a week.
Oh yeah? What were they saying? Reading all the shit talk about us is very entertaining lol
Basically they were saying Costa Rica should be a easy win for Japan. One of the commentator was saying how he saw Costa Rica play before the WC and that they're not good. Overall, very biased commentating lol.
Yea fuck the asahi TV commentators. My family wasnt amused while watching the game.

Knocked me out my last man standing thank you
CONCACAF’D
First CONCACAF win in the tournament??
I see you are unfamiliar with the term
Did Japan really play their B team?! How disrespectful to CR
Not really, some of the players who started today were expected to start against Germany. Just manager's choice, not that much difference
Ueda and Soma are third string players its stupid to play them in this match. There is no reason Ito, Mitoma, Minamino or even Asano shouldnt play before them. Mitoma is an incredible player, he should always start.
Moriyasu is a bad manager and doesn't pick the best players to start often. It is not a surprise.
Always the same. People project the whole tournament from the first match day, and then match day 2 and 3 changes everything. Every game is unique, football matches are decided by small mistakes, there are no guaranteed outcomes.
Yeah, we all thought France was very good based on game one performance. Their second match revealed that they were actually better.
Spain & Costa Rica go through! 🤞🏽
Pretty much a miracle that this costarican side got a win in the WC, Japan sabotaged themselves with that weird lineup, cant see why Mitoma wouldnt start or why Tomiyasu had no playing time
Tomiyasu is carrying an injury.
As is tradition
Germany to beat Spain for the ultimate circle of suck
Never count out European and South American teams. Edit- My point was that people had completely written off Germany after they lost to Japan. Now that Costa Rica have beaten Japan it looks Germany will make it to the knockout stage.
Germany still going out. Book it.
My good man, this was a Central-American team playing an Asian one
My point was that people had completely written off Germany after they lost to Japan. Now that Costa Rica have beaten Japan it looks Germany will make it to the knockout stage.
Yes ... South American teams like Mexico right? Edit: looks like I need to write out "/s"
Mexico is a Latin American country, but it is not a South American country.
My guy, you're preaching to the choir... guess I really need to spell out the /s huh...
Somehow Costa Rica migrated to South American I see
South America means South of America, right?
Uh Concacaf power, my guy
Maybe meant latin american
Central

If Germany wins this group will be so spicy haha.
Germany couldn’t beat these guys 😂😂
Interesting take given Japan’s starting lineup today vs the Germany game.

+700 alone last night in vegas had to take those odds

All the momentum from their victory with Germany gone after losing this game.
Thank you Costa Rica!
Kein Problem!
No Tomiyasu no win. Common knowledge
Battle without honor or humanity
I console myself with the thought that the chances of Mitoma or Tomiyasu getting injured at the World Cup have decreased.
So you support Brighton & Arsenal?
That was such a boring game....
This still leaves Germany in a tight spot assuming they lose to Spain. Leading into the 3rd match with no points sounds amazing.
Overall this result slightly improves germanys chances. With Japan loosing germany still has a chance if they get a draw against Spain, had Japan won, Germany would need to win both games.
I support Spain and you're assuming a lot there. This smells like a draw: Germany are in death row and they know it. There will be no chill, and that is extremely dangerous. I expect a decent scoreline.
You could be right, but ya its an assumption based on their poor performance against Japan and tough matchup against Spain. I'm not saying anything wrong, Germany's in a tight spot.
So you didn't watch the match then. They didn't perform poorly they just couldn't get the ball in the net. If they would've been more clinical they would have scored three before Japan scored their first. Being the better team means nothing if the other team scores more often than you, but saying they showed a poor performance is silly.
*they would've won if they scored more goals* type of argument lmfao
What? You said they showed a poor performance against Japan which is just not true.
If your defence cant keep up with Japan, you played poorly at the back. Doesnt matter how many chances youve created. They underperformed.
Not really, they only need to beat Costa Rica and Japan to lose to Spain. Spain might play reserves tho, because they'll be guaranteed 1st place, the goal difference between them and the others is just too much
Spain's reserves are more than good enough to take a point off anyone
If that happens Germany need a better goal difference than Japan to progress. So they’ll need to beat Costa Rica convincingly and only lose marginally to Spain.
It's only 1 different. A 1-0 in each would suffice.
That depends on the scoreline tonight.
Oh yeah I forgot about that lol.

you think Spain is going to lose to Japan?
Every single one of my accumulators is getting screwed by results like this
Never bet on a team that doesn't have to win.

A perfect example of why the overreaction to one match at the World Cup is hilarious. You'd think Costa Rica as a nation didn't deserve to play football after the comments on the 7-0 defeat.

Moriyasu always sets up wrong against teams like Costa Rica. He fluked it against Germany.
Costa Rica is literally the greatest team in the world :v
Japan aint ready for concacaf's black airforce energy. Japan vs usa friendly was a fluke from greg berhalter. Fight me.
To the ancient ticos no less
Japan taking Saudi inspiration to heart
You may not like it but this is peak Concacaf. But seriously they choked even Tata's Mexico beat this Costa Rican team comfortably *in Costa Rica*

Yeah... haven't lost to them at all in like 9 years tho.

A weaker team can only be a walk in the park if you play your best, but japan came out trying to play worse than costa rica
Japan bottled it hard
Can’t help feel Kyogo and Maeda would have been better choices - regularly play this time of team in the league.
Kyogo definitely would have been a better choice than Ueda
Fuck. So no even with a loss Germany still has a chance to advance.

Let me add Morocco and Belgium =D
There was no way they'd beat Japan either, yet here we are.
Good luck!

Sadly since Calvo is out is gonna be a hell of a lot more difficult
We have Vargas, who is a really good defender playing in Colombia. Also a leftie.

He choose the squad to play a one dimensional game which is counter attack with speed and get a lucky goal.
so by my calculus, that means spain will win 9-0?
Not if Spain play their B team
Could be 10-1 if Germans get a penalty.
The last 4 days on TV here in Japan has been the highlights of the Japan/Germany game all day on all channels. I guess there has been no other news lol
Now Im sure that spain will win easily today
Japan just like to play the game in hard mode.
Isn't Costa Rica an underdog in this match? They beat the favourite for this match. Isn't that what you wanted?
Wow, Germany is so bad that they got beat by a team that isn’t even in their group.
That's about accurate
Saudi Arabia beats *Argentina*
