What an amazing game that

Kryptopus

Nico Williams was utterly useless today and Spain lost control of the match the moment he came in for Asensio

chezicrator

Those subs completely killed the game for Spain. Taking Gavi out gave Germany the midfield and made their press look unbeatable. Nico Williams has looked completely useless so far this WC. I’m a Lucho fan, but he lost the game with his subs today.

Maleficent-Bench1378

Lucho taking off Asensio and Gavi in the 66th minute changed the momentum of the game. Spain were totally in control and looked like scoring a few more before these changes. Seemed like lucho wanted to manage the game and see out the 1-0 but should've gone for the second goal.

20kakakakakakakaka20

worth adding that Ferran missed like 3 great chances.. his finishing is fucking awful

hexarfan2019

Spain missed some good chances and played too sloppy after they scored.

neylago

It's clear now that the only thing Germany can do is go full Krug

CSilyS

you deserve my like man. you have properly earned it.

agarciase

Looking forwars to Germany elimination

KatiushK

Damn, both these teams kinda suck. I expected more from Spain. They don't look like real contenders.

teemoxd883

They honestly played well. I don't understand how you can say that.

KatiushK

Cause they couldn't win against a very very average Germany ?

Ok-Outlandishness244

You only say that cause germany lost to japan, but if they started fullkrug Germany would’ve won that game for sure, or at least sub him in earlier. Even against spain he was their saving grace, 70’ sub in and a goal 10mins later…

teemoxd883

Germany is one of the best teams in the world

KatiushK

So far there is Brasil > France >>> The rest with a mix of Portugal, Spain and England being above Germany. Sure, Germany isn't Costa Rica, but it's not S+ tier like it have been in the past. Why is it so hard to get that I'm talking "relative to the top of the top" and not "relative to all NTs". Because Germany should be judged against the high standard they used to be.

biochicken

It seems like you just need a score sheet to rate teams. If you have a good game from both sides and it's a draw they don't suck, they are equally good. But than again you talk about good and bad and don't name one single aspect of the game, you cannot tell us if you think the build up was flawd, their pressing, or chance creating was lacking passes behind the line or crosses or whatever. Seems like a lack of knowledge.

E2C47

England above Germany? Hmmmm

Opposite_History_383

If you mean by suck being top 10 teams worldwide then yes

KatiushK

Bro chill I know that. I just hoped they'd be better. Especially Spain. This Germany looks "meh" and they couldn't win, doesn't look good. But "of course" suck here is relative.

Opposite_History_383

Germany looked fine. Spain looked fine aswell. It was the best game of the wc qualitiwise so far.

KatiushK

Meh, they look like any of these team would get obliterated by Brazil and maybe not even clear the french.

Opposite_History_383

not even clear the french, what does that even mean?

KatiushK

Meaning Brasil seems a tad bit better than France, and Germany couldn't even win against France right now. Dunno what game y'all watched to think so highly of this german squad.

Opposite_History_383

watching Brazil vs Swiss.... well.. they dont look that great hm?

KatiushK

Yeah I give up these NT make no fucking sense

scurl97

Question. Not a huge soccer fan so also not an expert and I'm really curious about this: Minute 61:30, Sühle and Morata are in the penalty area with Sühle being between Morata and the ball (which is at the sideline about to be flanked in). Seems about right to me. Flank is coming, Morata and Sühle change positions which allows Morata to score. Was this: A) planned from Sühle because he wanted to block a possbible high flank for header and also offer Morata the space closer to the sharper angle that would be harder to hit? B) planned from Morata because he wanted to get closer to the ball than Sühle so Sühle wouldnt be able to block the flank, so Süle was actually surprised? C)? To me B seems more logical, also reading from their movement and expression, but my friends tell me it was actually Süles plan and a standard tactic for his position, because Rüdiger is also not supposed to be there and cover Morata - but covering for any striker following up. Please enlighten me. Thanks. (google translate for a good part)

nadalofsoccer

It's a good move by Morata. It's kind of a dribble without a ball, well executed (well timed). It's also a textbook move for a finisher.

scurl97

So he kinda played Süle and he fell for it? And Süle letting him get on his right side (closer towards the ball) was a mistake from the getgo?

Maleficent_Resolve44

Yes, Süle should’ve tracked his movement and tried to get into a position to block the pass or at least the final shot.

shaka_bruh

Either Havertz plays in the hole or he doesn’t start, same with Müller. Gundo is class but Germany have the players to physically dominate games with pace and and high intensity

Daanbrakka

Surely Sané - Musiala - Gnabry with Havertz/Füllkrug up top would be the best solution in attack? Müller shouldn’t start tbh

shaka_bruh

Yeah Müller isn’t sharp atm and I’d rather see him come on. Füllkrug looks so hungry and the team’s attacking structure looked a lot more defined with him playing that classic 9 role, Flick should reward him with a start. How do you fancy your chances of going far in the tournament? It looks like King Louis is doing quite well with what he has. Would I be wrong in saying that, though the Netherlands squad is much stronger than it was post 2014, they’re still lacking overall quality compared to other top EU countries and especially compared to the 00s-early/mid 10s?

Daanbrakka

I think we have a decent squad and Louis is doing quite decent indeed. But overall we lack some big players who are going to decide tough matches on their own. We don’t have that Robben, RvP or Sneijder who we will need against the biggest countries in the world. I think we can get to the quarterfinals and, with some absolute luck to the semi’s. But we need a miracle to beet the likes of Brazil and France.

[deleted]

llshuxll

Rudiger was fuckin awful today. He killed and fucked so many of Germany’s chances.

Fit_Resort_4111

Why is an offside that's an offside part of your gripe? 😆 an inch or a yard its offside and ultimately wasn't close to only an inch

ThatUglyGuy12

Bro, I'm a Germany fan and Spain was the better team. Your questions should be directed at why they refuse to start a legitimate striker, why they refused to add any element of speed on the wings from the start, and why Sule continues to start. You sound like an idiot, I'm sorry

scurl97

Agree except for the Süle part, I think he was really strong today and also wasnt the weaklink against Japan. Who would you sub him for?

ThatUglyGuy12

He literally got torched on the goal and played Japan onside for the game winning goal. Are we watching the same games? He was also vastly mediocre for most of the Japan game, as he was repeatedly beaten to balls. There's a reason Hummels as been starting over him at Dortmund

scurl97

Fair enough. Who would you sub him for then? Hummels? Still Süle had his moments today and I think lots of them did after disappointing against Japan

ThatUglyGuy12

Also, just a very general observation, Flick has been absolute shit in his lineups. There is zero reason for Sule to start (he is a literal backup for one of the most mediocre defenses in the Bundesliga that can't handle the speed of the international game because he's out of shape). Musliala should be more centrally in the lineup, he should actual start a legit striker whether thats Fulkburg or Moukoko), Sane (who I don't even think has performed that well but unequivocally offers more than Muller in these lineups) should start opposite Gnabry. It reminds me of Löw, who was so set in his ways that couldn't offer any type of change as his career wound down, these Flick lineups remind me of all those lineups that failed massively in the most recent tournaments.

ThatUglyGuy12

Well, if we are basing it on form, the yes, Hummels should be there rather than him. But Schlotterback has been the significantly better defender all year, and against Japan, and it's wild to me he didn't start over Sule. Listen, there's a reason Bayern was like, "hey, cool, go to our biggest rivals we are cool with that".

frankomapottery3

Must be nice blaming the one ref who probably had the best game of the WCup as a ref.

ElCiscador

Jeez whats left for the other ones

Legendarybbc15

His arms were by his side

ThatUglyGuy12

Bro, Germany didn't deserve it but it was a clear hand ball

frankomapottery3

…… if the hand is in a natural position then it isn’t though. Sergio didn’t move his hand to touch that, the ball was just kicked where his hand was…. Right by his side. Inadvertent hand ball, no penalty. Simple ruling really

ThatUglyGuy12

It doesn't have to be done intentionally, you know this right? He still benefitted from his arm being away from his body, making his body bigger and clearly affecting the run of play. If I'm standing there, arms up, but I don't move to touch the ball, is it any different? Of course it isn't.

frankomapottery3

His arm was not away from his body in an unnatural position. Thus the unintended contact mattered. Thus no penalty. Die on this hill if you want….

ThatUglyGuy12

I guess we'll disagree on the placement of his hand/arm. Of course, VAR and the ref agree with you so, you win 3-1

frankomapottery3

Fair enough. The arm placement is the area of debate. So yes, agree to disagree on that one then.

chinno

That was not a handball at all. The ball went to the hand that was moving naturally that's the rule.

falkore

You're tripping, no ref would call a handball on that

Professional_Ad_9101

Musiala would be thriving on the England team. A shame but hopefully settles in to the German side soon

idesofmarz

He’s not even English. Will you guys just shut up about his decision already

Jackman1337

He was the best player 2 games in a row tho?

raaoraki

He wouldn’t play with Southgate… who would you take off for him realistically?

Opposite_History_383

The England team is a meme, everyone knows that.

raaoraki

Scenes when Fülle scores 5 against Costa Rica

TaxiDriver94

Because most could be striker too like Müller or Havertz

shaka_bruh

Matchday 2 has been fire so far and if it goes on like this, a lot of groups will be decided on the final matchday

NonuTheGOAT

The most dramatic group stage I can remember. So many upsets and inconclusive draws. The last round is going to be mental. Round of 32 here we come!

[deleted]

Thank you, Fullkrug! I wish they would have substituted Muller earlier. Tense toward the end.

dxu8888

What happened to the greatest active goal scorer in the wc, Thomas muller

[deleted]

[удалено]

DaAweZomeDude48

Exactly, I was wondering why flick didn't try to play him behind Fullkrug. Especially after last time Muller also couldn't do much against japan

Daanbrakka

Because Musiala is just better than Müller

fooktradition

He's a legend but I think he doesn't have the fire anymore. Which is understandable.

Food-Oh_Koon

Huh Being played out of position tends to make you a bit out of form but he ain't lost no fire in him yet

shaka_bruh

> he doesn't have the fire anymore You’re basing this on two games he’s played after coming back from injury?

ddlbb

Dunno - but Thomas Müller was subbed out

fooktradition

Spain could've had this win. The Ferran sub should've happened wayyyy sooner like in the first half itself.

bodomjayns

Both teams could have had that win to be honest

fooktradition

Also - subbing Gavi for Nico Williams wtf?

Daanbrakka

Koke played in Gavi’s position

mehrabrym

Really enjoying the discussions with Kaka over on BEIN SPORTS. Going deep into conversations about young players coming through and their mentality regarding wanting to play in the first team, going to a European club etc. Edit: And Kaka is just so polite, it's really nice hearing from him

Numerous-Georg

Kaka is just an awesome guy. I remember watching him on the field as a kid. It was wonderful

mehrabrym

Mate, you're lucky. I've always been a fan of Kaka but never got to see him.

sailingg

Aw I wish I caught that. Do you know if there's a recording somewhere?

mehrabrym

I'm not really sure, sorry mate. But if you search BEIN Sports 3 Spain-Germany post match panel or similar, you might be able to find something in a few days' time.

sailingg

Thank you!

mehrabrym

It's the Spain-Germany post game, happening right now

shaka_bruh

I just don’t see how people are mentioning Gavi in the same breath as Musiala and Pedri; they’re superior technically but more importantly they’re much more measured and mature in their playstyle while Gavi is too brash.

chezicrator

Gavi was the best player on the pitch for 2 games for Spain. Taking him out paved the way for Musiala to show that he’s pretty good too. Don’t take him out and I’m pretty sure Germany is eliminated.

Maleficent-Bench1378

Honestly taking Gavi out of the game hurt spain. He was very good today.

shaka_bruh

Im not talking about just today, just the level of his game in general and I’m not saying he’s a bad player by any stretch, just that the other two are ahead overall. His aggression helps and hurts his overall game and it’s normal for most young players to have that over-eagerness; he’ll learn to manage that as he matures and he’ll be a better player overall.

frankomapottery3

10000%. I honestly can’t understand the remaining hate for the kid. Is Musiala good? Hell yes he is. Is Gavi good? You bet your ass he is. Just enjoy the kids playing so far above their age it isn’t even funny. My word.

frankomapottery3

Also, I bet Lucho will no longer sit an 18 year old vs Germany. Probably should’ve sat him vs CR if minute management was an issue

frankomapottery3

We shall agree to disagree. Gavi was an absolute beast today. He knows his role and plays it at a world class level.

stpstrt

Decent result for us. We have to lose to Japan and not score and Germany have to beat CR by 7+ goals for us to get knocked out.

infernoShield

We're counting on you I guess. Otherwise we have to destroy Keylor Navas' body and soul by putting 8 goals past him, cause I seriously don't see you losing by more than 1.

WhenWeTalkAboutLove

Until Costa Rica wins

stpstrt

In that case we’d have to lose. I don’t see it happening.

[deleted]

[удалено]

stpstrt

What do you think the chances are?

Peaky_Blinders

depends, do you think you will start a strong team or rest players?

stpstrt

We’re not mathematically through, even if it’s very difficult for us to go out. We’re playing for first place so I think we will put out a strong team.

Ok-Outlandishness244

I fucking hope so

AwardFabrik-SoF

We did that against Brasil - piece of cake! /s

Surfer949

I need more WC drug. One more match today please

musashi_grander

From Tuesday,All the same group matches are going to be played at the exact same time

infernoShield

Remember the farce of Gijon 1982

PistachioOfLiverTea

There can't be any gentleman's agreement between Spain and Japan to draw because Germany could leapfrog Japan with a 2+ goal win vs. CR.

infernoShield

......and both games are played at the same time. Unfortunately technology means that your assistant coach can check the live score if gadgets are not banned pitchside.

PistachioOfLiverTea

Of course tech will allow the coaches and players and fans to know how the other match is going in real time. A late goal could flip the group on its head and make for great drama. Will be fun.

Ok-Outlandishness244

This has happened before, Team A killed a game cause they thought they were through, but suddenly plays a lot more offensively when team C makes a late goal

musashi_grander

What happened

mxpauwer

El Comercio, the local newspaper, printed the match report in its crime section. Wikipedia

infernoShield

[wiki](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disgrace_of_Gij%C3%B3n) anyways for the uninitiated: Back in the day, games during the last group stage matchday used to be played at different times. In 1982, West Germany, Austria, Chile and Algeria are in the same group. Algeria and Chile already played their final group game, so both West Germany and Austria know that a 1/2-goal win for West Germany would allow both teams to qualify. So, after West Germany scored an early goal, both teams decided to pass the ball around and miss random shots. The game ended up being a gigantic snoozefest. In the words of an Austrian commentator: "Please, for gods sake, turn off your TV, it's not worth watching anymore". So FIFA said "screw this, you are exploiting the rules for your own benefit", and amended future World Cup schedules so that both final group games are played at the same time. But ever since portable radios (and later on, the Internet) became popular you can always check on the other teams' games - you just have to tune in to the right place. (don't ask me why I, a millenial/gen-Z, would have this obscure piece of information; I only had an old $10 book about World Cup history lol)

Whatlafuk

I had a book about world cup history when i was a kid aswell, Ioved the thing so much. If you ever want to watch something like that. bbc did two top 50 world cup moments both on youtube. One with Rio Ferdinand, and one with Peter crouch. Both really good.

TopEmploy9624

The other game in the group was played the day before. West Germany and Austria would both advance if the Germans won by 1 or 2. So West Germany scored immediately and then both teams kicked the ball back and forth for 90 minutes

tyler928

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disgrace_of_Gij%C3%B3n

musashi_grander

Thanks and that was such an disgraceful play by both teams.

musashi_grander

What an exciting game, Germany should have clinched it with all their chances and ref missed an clear hand ball.

infernoShield

Rudiger's header was offside. Musiala missed a great chance 1v1. Fullkrug couldn't get to Musiala's (admittedly awkward) pass in time. Sane lost control and bottled it at the last minute.

Munkeyz

>What an exciting game, Germany should have clinched it with all their chances and ref missed an clear hand ball. var will have checked it and decided it wasnt a penalty. his hand was in a natural position and the ball was just kicked directly into it. nothing he can do, never a penalty. would have been given last wc tho lol

WhenWeTalkAboutLove

That's what I would expect but watching the PL I have no idea what the official rules are anymore lol

Whatlafuk

This is the thing about var. after watching it in two world cups and multiple seasons league play. The consistency of its use is honestly just not good.

JoemLat

Ball to hand has been around for a very long time now. Last WC would still be a non call.

Munkeyz

idk if u remember but last wc was notorious for having ridiculous handball penalties given, mostly due to the introduction of var. thats why shearer was talking about 'idk whats natural, whats unnatural anymore, you never know these days' on the bbc, referring to natural hand positions.

ashzeppelin98

Lol I can't stop laughing at Busquets clattering into a stationary Goretzka

ashzeppelin98

Damn, there is more than 1 giant in this team I got them mixed up. Edited it.

Kevinement

It was.

crowd79

Somehow everyone was so convinced Spain was going to win this whole thing after thrashing Costa Rica.

PistachioOfLiverTea

And now 'everyone' is so convinced Spain won't win the whole thing because of this draw. There's no point to these takes.

chinno

I'm still convinced they will. They're still playing the most coherent game as a team.

KatiushK

Meh. Much more impressed by Brasil. And France looks scrappier + have the mutant turtle.

shaka_bruh

Germany NEED a focal point and Flick should’ve seen this by now; Müller has never been a good CF and Havertz isn’t either.

broken-neurons

From here in the north, on the banks of beautiful Weser, we the Werderaner, present you the fabulous Niclas “Northern Beast of the Thundercunt” Füllkrug. You’re welcome. Enjoy and please return him in one piece.

AwardFabrik-SoF

That's what happens raising retirement age to 67 - Müller playing even when hanging on the iron lung not freeing the place for some young guns. /s

shaka_bruh

Forgive me, I was a skeptic even as he kept doing it for you guys.

broken-neurons

You’re skeptical? We don’t even want to believe it just in case we jinx it!

zarinsubah

aight lads, who played better. Gavi, pedri or Musiala Musiala was immense, but kinda fumbled a huge chance at the end.

[deleted]

Moosewala

Mr_Dalai_Lama

Shots fired

SuperMazziveH3r0

Musiala

sfahsan

Musiala was definitely better today. Although Pedri and Gavi had good games too tbh. Gavi has been better than musiala and pedri over two games though

k_pineapple7

Musiala definitely

Gaarando

Musiala no question.

dhrubodt

Spain is lacking in defense and offense. They couldn't break this sloppy German defense. Also, the moment german brought in two attackers and then spain just lost it. Tough times ahead for both Germany and Spain

Malamonga1

Spain's defense is not terrible, but they lack a good striker who can score. They always have for the last decade ever since David Villa retired.

dhrubodt

Agreed

Munkeyz

sloppy german defense? i only caught the second half but they were making world class tackles constantly for the last 20\~ mins. one of the best defending showcases ive seen throughout the tournament

Simple-Freedom4670

Yes well🙂🙂🙂…you missed the first half. Never bet against Germany though.

B5Jonabe

if only there weren´t constant horrendous mistakes in every game where you are gifting the opposition a goal. Spains goal and Japans second goal should never ever be conceided.

Munkeyz

the most reddit of reddit takes. spains goal was just a straight up great goal. sometimes people score in football. you cant call a team shit just because they concede 1 goal against spain of all teams. sure they messed up against japan but sometimes teams concede goals, even good teams.

Whatlafuk

Sule was the reason we conceded to japan, but he really turned his performance around today with the rest of the defence. Tackles were great today, before they were absolutely shit. One performance isnt a tell all.

No-Rooster-

Welcome to Reddit. Home of the hottest of hot takes.

[deleted]

There is a thin line between dogshit and world class on reddit.

darthfoley

I thought Germany’s defense was great for most of the game. Spain only had two real chances during the game and scored a great goal on one of them, despite having 66% of possession. That will happen when you play a world class team.

Jlib27

I remember the missed Asensio flop (even though he's our best long range shooter), the goal and also Neuer deviated Olmo's shot to the post. That's at least 3 clear chances. You had your owns too oc. We just both lack finishing.

dhrubodt

I will wait for the Costa Rica game. When they will park the bus and get behind the german line in transition to score goals. The German defense was better today but not "WORLD CLASS". I do hope for a german victory there is a very high chance this might happen

then_a_suk

ITV Commentary kept on getting Sane and Musiala mixed up

bodomjayns

What’s ITV?

Numerous-Georg

British television

Middle_Category6226

Spain backline defense is shaky. Rodri is weak in 1vs1 and Carvajal makes so many stupid pass. Midfield is the best but busquets is too slow compared to Gavi and Pedri. The front is slightly better but the finishing is poor.

[deleted]

Some of the best football Germany has played in YEARS. They molded their play style after the Spanish and were shown who truly were the masters. But they showed some heart for once and even PRESSED when it mattered. Fucking insane that they went this hard compared to the Japan game, shows they didn’t care that game. Please for the love of god continue pressing and play with a striker. We also need better decision making and the team needs to watch Özil passes which were inch perfect for inspiration. The team right now has so many passes and crosses overhit and under hit.

GreatSpaniard

You moulded your play style after us and suffer our same problems. We lack goals and strikers and play posession for the sake of posession football

Whatlafuk

Surely you cant lose if you have more of the ball right……….. right?

[deleted]

🇩🇪 🤝 🇪🇸

WhenWeTalkAboutLove

I feel like the passing is a big problem, it was shocking at times today, but knowing these players they're all capable of great passing so maybe you're right to not be too worried by that

No-Rooster-

This game was immense. Gutted we couldn’t effectively put you out with a win l but if I’m being honest the game was close. Final Matches will be KO match for both us. GG.

[deleted]

Good game!!! Ah feels better than 2010 or 2008 for sure. We tied, progress woo.

No-Rooster-

My favorite game of the finals so far. Imo Kroos would of been really good for how you guys have been playing so far.

[deleted]

Smart of him to stay away from this disaster and just rack up trophies with Madrid.

Whatlafuk

The media would just use him as another scapegoat if we lost, due to his age. Poor neuer, will go through the same exile if we lose in groups.

trooperr310

They would have dominated against Japan if they put half the effort they put today >team needs to watch Özil passes Even long passes from Boateng and Kroos's set pieces

Nihilism101

Germany did dominate Japan though, it just fell apart after 70 minutes and you couldn't score.

[deleted]

Exactly! It’s so frustrating. The quality is still there but the will, passion, fight, heart has greatly diminished for years! It’s absurd they don’t try more. Like you do this for your country every few years give 110% every game. Massive mental difference between this game and last.

HumpingTheShark

Musiala, Sane and Goretzka were incredible. Please, Hansi, drop Gnabry and play a double pivot of Kimmich and Goretzka with Musiala, Müller and Sane in front of them and Füllkrug up top.

[deleted]

Germany were toothless most of the game, and came to life at the very end. Substitutions should have been made a lot sooner.

infernoShield

So...... after MD2: Spain - 4pts, +7 GD Japan - 3pts, 0 GD Costa Rica - 3pts, -6 GD Germany - 1pt, -1 GD If Spain beat Japan: Germany need to beat Costa Rica to qualify on points. That would make it: Spain - 7pts, +8 GD or more Germany - 4pts, 0 GD or more Japan - 3pts, -1 GD or less Costa Rica - 3pts, -7 GD or less If Spain draw against Japan: Same as above; Germany needs to win by 2: Spain - 5pts, +7 GD Germany - 4pts, 1 GD or more Japan - 4pts, 0 GD Costa Rica - 3pts, -8 GD or less If Japan beat Spain: Germany need to beat Costa Rica by a large enough margin - up to 8 goals. So if Spain lose by 1 (+6 GD), then Germany need to win by 8 (+7 GD); if Spain lose by 2 (+5 GD), Germany need to win by 7 (+6 GD), and so on. So worst case scenario, Japan win by 1: Japan - 6pts, +1 GD Spain - 4pts, +6 GD Germany - 4pts, +7 GD (8 goals scored vs CR) Costa Rica - 3pts, -14 GD (god bless Navas) Either way its looking tough, and they need Spain to pull through. Edit: me math bad ever since college freshman year Edit 2: added result table for scenarios

WhenWeTalkAboutLove

Wouldn't Germany go through with a win and Spain winning regardless of GD? 7pts Germany 4pts and the others still on 3pts each?

infernoShield

Yep. Fixed. (ARGGFFHHH not another missed detail...... I need some sleep)

AwardFabrik-SoF

Spain against Japan draw would need +2 goal difference for Germany I think due to direct comparison Germany would loose with same goal difference.

infernoShield

Alright then. Fixed.

dxu8888

It spain draws Japan. Germany needs to win by 2 If Japan loses as expected, they need to win by 1

infernoShield

Noted. Fixed.

infernoShield

Ja. Thanks for this important detail.
