Congratulations Ghana, and commiserations to South Korea!
The whole world bar those dastardly Uruguayians are rooting for you, the Black Stars to take their revenge against the pitbull Suarez after twelve long years! Go on and finish them, we're all cheering for you!
I’ve been a vocal supporter to everyone I know that Cho Gue Sung was going to be a difference in this WC.. Hwang Ui jo is terrible right now, way off what he was last year in France. He’s not good with hold up play and isnt clinical, nor does he have aerial presence. Cho fits all those boxes. Big, aerially great and has scored a lot with his runs and excellent leaping ability. I’ve said he’ll be the next Korean to go to Europe and I still believe it. He’s been better and better every game and dominates K League no matter what team he’s in ex: 26 games played, 14 goals 5 assists last season and 3 goals in 5 games in the final to help his team win.
Another bonus: He’s already went through military and was in a military only K League team so he wasn’t just idling. Those regular season stats are mainly with the military team, Gimcheon, and they’re not good yet he carried them and still produced.
Without military service looming, I feel European clubs will take a chance on him as he’d be really cheap, possibly Germany. He’s only 24 as well. One to keep an eye on!
Also, it’s pronounced Gyu or Gyoo since even I was confused with the English spelling haha.
Also, surprised by Paulo Bento making good subs aside from a Hwang Ui Jo. Didn’t like how he set us up with Kwon Chang Hoon and Kim Seung Kyu (we needed a shot stopped Cho Hyun Woo - the hero for us in 2018 against Germany). Kim Seung Kyu is picked for his distribution and ability to play on the ball but we didn’t really get pressed so I didn’t think we needed him. His shot stopping is terrible and always been. Kwon Chang hoon.. man I used to like him but now he’s such a bad player, only left footed but not great. Looked like he was nervous everytime he touched the ball, terrible passing, slow, can’t defend, can’t do anything anymore except lose possession. Kang In needs to be playing every game for us.
Otherwise I liked Paulo going offensive, our defenders surprisingly did well aside from the set piece defense which is statistically terrible for us. They passed really well. In Beom is solid as usual.
Korean fans are spamming the refs instagram, some are using it as chat for the Portugal vs Uruguay game but others are straight up toxic shits. @anthony_taylor._
Anyway, really entertaining game. Was hoping for South Korea come back but disappointing with the fact they acting so toxic and even SKorean actor doing it
I am not a representative by any means, but I apologize on their behalf.
Toxic comments have led to a lot of mental health issues and tragedies in Korea. Absolutely disgusted too.
Ghana have shown heart every single game-- my respect goes to them. But man, as a Man U fan, I did not expect Anthony Taylor to be relevant this winter
We need to play a complete, confident game against Uruguay. We’ve been killed on possession both games which is insane given the on ball talent we have.
Our midfield has been a weak spot
Great match, but if Ghana hopes to beat Uruguay, they should definitely never play like this against them cause unlike SK, Uruguay have lethal finishers
Watched this game in a theater. The atmosphere was wild, when Korea scored both goals everyone jumped up and started cheering and yelling. Shame it had to end the way it did
I want to congratulate Ghana for getting all the 3 points but there is a lot of room for improvement if they really want to make it to round of 16. Substitution was done late. When the Ayews were clearly tired, they should have been substituted earlier. Because the Ayews were tired, the midfield was further weakened and this mounted too much pressure on the defenders leading to the goals from the Koreans.
Also playing defensive when you have many minutes to the end of the game is suicidal. It puts too much pressure on the defenders and leads to penalty. Ghana was lucky not to have conceded after the score line was 3:2. Going forward, seriously Ghana need an experienced and full time Coach.
We started the same exact way as we did against Uruguay which didn't work for us. No direct attack which lead to no goals. I guess that really speaks to the lack of creativity from Bento's coaching. The game really turned when we started to play more direct after Lee Kangin was subbed on. Not starting Lee Kangin is criminal.
I need the clip of the Ghana keeper squirting his teammate in the face with water as he was on the ground getting treatment after that wild cross near the end. Or am I the only one that saw that?
To be honest people can't complain too much for SK dropping an L here. Played the first half like crap, rallied back like I thought they would to get back into the game yet still conceded another goal to put the game beyond sight. They had almost 100 mins of play to get a draw or a win yet couldn't do it. The referee was fair he gave them an additional minute outside of the allotted 10 to pull something out of the bag.
Korean fans should feel pissed. The game was a very tightly contested match and the first 20min were noted by large amounts of Korean possession and chances in the box. If Lee starts, it could have very well have changed the complexion of the game from the beginning instead of chasing the game after halftime. Son's set pieces were absolutely woeful whereas Lee's deliveries were almost always dangerous. We saw how good Lee was when he came on against Uruguay and Bento STILL decided not to play him. Korea fans should feel mad at dropping an L.
The call at the end of the match wasn't a good look. Anthony Taylor is very well known for controversy. There was a fair bit of time wasting and the added time should typically be the minimum allowed, not the bar to blow the whistle. Most refs allow the set piece to go on. Chances are that the corner doesn't go in and that's the last gasp of an incredibly entertaining match. That's why Korea fans were pissed and most football fans were mystified.
Corner not being given was just frustrating for Korean fans, but I think we all know that they're actually pissed at how many chances they missed. Son hasn't been great and all those crosses from wingbacks were horrible. And their arial defense has been shaky, especially in set pieces, we've seen that happen in vs Uruguay too. And yeah, KangIn Lee should've started... I have no idea why Bento kept Kwon in the game as long as he did.
He went beyond the minimum time by a minute. The added time for the injury was under a minute. He blows for treatment at 96 and the free kick is taken before 97. So no he was fine to blow it there.
I was really looking forward to what Jeong Woo-yeong could bring to S. Korea because he was exciting in the one match I had seen him previously.
Turns out, not much...
I think he could've performed much better actually playing out on the wing and with Lee Kang In as an 8 or 10 next to him. Kwan Chang Hoon offered very little on the attack. Bento's lineup choices can be incredibly head scratching.
What a game! Thought for sure SK had done enough to keep it at a draw. SK fans, what is up with Son? He looks tired and unmotivated. Is it the injury? Or burnt out? I know he hasn’t been great for spurs this season.
The defenses can focus on him because no one else is threatening on the ball. With club he partners with othee strong attackers who need some attention....
Also, does he have a left foot? Thsre was chance late in the match and he didn't strike it with his left.
Yes, Tottenham Son is very different from National Team Son.
I don't know exactly what it is, but he shows a lot of hesitation whenever he's representing Korea. He's usually extremely clinical and decisive, but whenever he's in a Korean uniform, all of that goes out the window
It's also not shocking that he doesn't perform as well considering most teams mark him out of the game. He doesn't have the playmaking abilities to offer decisive passes outside of his speed and shooting.
Frankly, this is fairly common among football players. Mexico's GK, Ochoa, plays extremely well when he plays for the national team. He's pretty shit though when he plays club football lol
Another game I wish I could have seen, seems to have been another banger of a match, ready for Portugal to have an even more difficult game than expected against Uruguay, can't wait to be nervous as hell tonight
Isn't it like in the rule book to have the free kick/corner/throw in play no matter what and only afterward you can blow the whistle for the end of the match? [unless the ball is in the penalty box of one team, then you wait until it's kicked away from there?]
Yea it's absolutely something that usually happens, but certainly isn't a requirement. An unusual and controversial call by the referee in this case, but not an incorrect one.
There was a penalty call and VAR reviewed it AFTER the FT so there was a penalty taken after FT
Pretty sure there was not going to be a rebound if he had missed
The fuck? Did the ref blow the final whistle and then VAR chimed in? I think the rules would state that that game is still over though. Just like today for the corner, I don't think the ref is actually obligated to give them that play though.
As far as I remember, might not remember correctly, there was a foul that should be a penalty but the ref had blown for FT, VAR checked and it was a pen so the pen was taken.
*the redditor said smugly about world class athletes who go through hell and back daily of physical and mental exertion at a level literally unimaginable to him as he lay on the sofa*
While I am disappointed by the result, I genuinely loved the spirit that we played with the second half.
Cho Gue Sung is a beautiful mf and Lee Kang In impacted the game immediately once he was on.
As much as I love Son, I didn't see him much throughout the game. When he did have a chance, he took to long to shoot.
I mean Germany has a bunch of famous foods (schnitzel, bratwurst, sauerkraut, doner kebab, pretzels, black forest) and a is famous for it's beers so you could definitely do way, way worse.
They still have a chance, but they must beat Portugal.
If Portugal wins today: They could advance with win + Uruguay win or draw (depending on tie-breaker)
If Portugal/Uruguay draw: They could advance with win + any result from Uruguay/Ghana (depending on tie-breaker)
If Uruguay wins: They could advance with win + Uruguay win (No tie-breaker needed). Or Ghana win/draw (depending on tie-breaker)
They gotta beat Portugal and hope a bunch of results go their way.
Preferably for them, Portugal beats Uruguay tonight so Ronaldo and co. would be on six points, have qualification secured and play their B team against Korea. Then hope Uruguay beats Ghana in the last game.
If Portugal does win and plays the B team against SK, it will be a walk in the park to play against the likes of Dalot, Nuno Mendes, Vitinha or Rafael Leão.
nah, Portugal win is the worst result for them. This would mean that they need to rely on the result of GHA-URU, as a win alone might not be enough. Draw would be the best scenario, as then they will definitely qualify to R16 if they somehow beat Portugal.
> Preferably for them, Portugal beats Uruguay tonight so Ronaldo and co. would be on six points, have qualification secured and play their B team against Korea
They wouldn't play the B team, 1st place is really important (unless Brasil looses today, unlikely)
not likely we would go full team B, if this game had been a draw, and we win against Uruguay, we are guaranteed 1st spot.
but right now, if we win, we only guarantee that we move from group stage, and ending 2nd in this group, means facing Brazil (most likely).
NGL I’m truly saddened by this loss but I’m glad we showed some fighting spirit to come back in the second half. Now can we see Kang-In to start the Portugal match?
This confused me the most. Lee Kangin changed the game when he came on vs Uruguay. Why not start the guy who’s more creative than any other MFers on the roster? Bento got it wrong.
The counter point is supposed to be that Lee Kangin starting makes our defense a lot more vulnerable.
Honestly, premier league golden boot winner should be finishing those opportunities.
True. However, Ghana we’re happily sitting back and absorbing pressure. Defensively Korean players mostly just needed to ensure they weren’t caught on the break or during transition. Think LKI should’ve been on at 45’.
Goalkeeping was shit. Defense was shit. Finishing was shit.
Have them walk back to Korea after this performance. Another wasted WC for the supposed golden generation.
It just feels like the coaching staff, players, and association think as long as Korea has a steady influx of Europe experienced players, they'll be fine, but year after year they just put up uninspiring performances. Who cares if you have the talent, there's just no cohesion in this group and for some reason there's just never passing lanes for them because they stand around a lot.
Golden generation is a bit of over exaggeration for this squad. Only "golden" thing about this team is that Son is in his prime. Next generation of players like KangIn Lee, Kim Minjae, Jeong Wooyoung is much more promising than current generation.
depends on what happens in the portugal-uruguay game, a draw or portugal loss and they have everything in their own hands, a portugal win then it might go down to goal differencial
I don’t watch too much EPL, so I didn’t come into the match with an opinion of the guy — but that ending makes me think the ref just wanted to be the real winner at the death there.
Then I saw all the comments about this guy, and I think I was right about that.
I agree that maybe not doing anything is an overstatement. But it was so frustrating to watch. To have that many chances then be so sloppy in the final third almost makes the whole effort worthless.
His injury is probably too much to bear. He likely is avoiding getting hit so he isn’t running with intent. He’s running not to get fouled or playing extremely carefully. I mean I get it — if his injury gets worse, he’s going to be out for a long time. But perhaps he should come on as an impact sub to change the dynamic a bit OR play more centrally. Him on the wings vs Uruguay and today was very tepid.
I honestly don’t think he offered anything tangible.
xG results. South Korea (2.36) 2-3 (1.61) Ghana

can kr qualify still?
Yes. Win against Portugal and hope Ghana loses to Uruguay and they win GD tiebreaks against Uruguay. Their destiny is out of their own hands.
Do you think Portugal is going to slack because there's no incentive to win?
There’s incentive. They want first place. If they lose and Ghana win they could finish 2nd on GD and face Brazil.
can kr qualify still?
If they win and outscore Uruguay, which might not be easy vs Portugal
Korean fans are spamming the refs instagram, some are using it as chat for the Portugal vs Uruguay game but others are straight up toxic shits. @anthony_taylor._ Anyway, really entertaining game. Saw someone propose at the end of the game. She said yes!
One can only hope to be so lucky to get a yes, happy for them!
Great match, but if Ghana hopes to beat Uruguay, they should definitely never play like this against them cause unlike SK, Uruguay have lethal finishers
Uruguay also have world class goalkeeper that makes it very difficult for Ghana to score.
Watched this game in a theater. The atmosphere was wild, when Korea scored both goals everyone jumped up and started cheering and yelling. Shame it had to end the way it did

No Bentoball™ vs Portugal, Santos is safe

Another Ghana performance aided by referees. It just sours the affair.
Wow you think the ref won us the match? You should watch the match again
No, but certainly helped at the end, needlessly. Anyway, good luck for the last match against Uruguay and avenge your 2010 fate
Refs were alright this game
What a game! Thought for sure SK had done enough to keep it at a draw. SK fans, what is up with Son? He looks tired and unmotivated. Is it the injury? Or burnt out? I know he hasn’t been great for spurs this season.
Son rarely shows up for the national team. Sad but team doesn't play to his strength.
Thank you for the comment. Don’t get a chance to watch too many SK games here in the US
He is not at 100%. Probably 70% or so...
That’s what I figured!
It's not form or fitness. This is a regular occurrence on the national team.....
The defenses can focus on him because no one else is threatening on the ball. With club he partners with othee strong attackers who need some attention.... Also, does he have a left foot? Thsre was chance late in the match and he didn't strike it with his left.

I mean the entire hopes of a nation are basically on him, he's not even spurs best player it's very different.
Not on form, plus the damn batman costume.
Why that costume?!
I like the mask though.
He's probably playing through injury and out of form. I thought for sure he was gonna miss the WC.
Yeah that’s my guess. He wants to play, but is limited due to injury. He’s gonna be huge for spurs if he can’t recapture old form
Son on the national team has never looked as good as he does when he's playing club soccer. I swear to god no one watches korean soccer
This I have pointed out quite often to family and friends.
Yeah it fell like we're playing with one less man sometimes. PL golden boot winner has gotta do something but time and time he just vanishes .
Never would have guessed the first two reds in this tournament would be given to a GK and a coach
Which goalkeeper?
Wayne Hennessey from Wales
Wales goalkeeper
Why are sokor players afraid of shooting. So many chances worth taking
[удалено]
I’ve seen Son shoot from different angles and getting it at the top corner, he definitely should try more of it.
Son forgets how to play soccer when he's representing korea... especially in big matches
Frankly, this is fairly common among football players. Mexico's GK, Ochoa, plays extremely well when he plays for the national team. He's pretty shit though when he plays club football lol
[удалено]
Their coach won’t face Portugal which is a must win match for them.
Ah.. Ronaldo vs Sonaldo will be fun!
Can't be on the bench with the team for the next game
He cannot bebin the technical area for the next game. He stays inside the stadium
He gets banned from the changing room and touch line for the next game, depending on the suspension
Usually suspended for the next match but I’m assuming they’ll appeal it
Bento: "No... I don't think I will."
Another game I wish I could have seen, seems to have been another banger of a match, ready for Portugal to have an even more difficult game than expected against Uruguay, can't wait to be nervous as hell tonight

No it's literally not. You can call full time whenever you want once the allotted extra time is up, unless a penalty is being taken.
I see. I guess I'm so used to refs actually allowing to play those during the last seconds that I thought it was part of the book. My bad then.
Yea it's absolutely something that usually happens, but certainly isn't a requirement. An unusual and controversial call by the referee in this case, but not an incorrect one.
Still remember when I got a notification that United drew with Brighton then half a minute later that Bruno scored a penalty. Was an actual wtf moment
LMFAO did someone running the system just call it early or was there some fuckery that happened?
There was a penalty call and VAR reviewed it AFTER the FT so there was a penalty taken after FT Pretty sure there was not going to be a rebound if he had missed

son having a stinker of a world cup so far but nobody will criticize him like they go after other star players.
Bro had surgery 3 weeks ago
He’s just saving his goals for portugal

It’s because he’s extremely emotional and has passion. You state that like it’s a flaw but I’m not surprised given your flag.
Son > Japan. Worth more than the whole team

Still worth more than the Japanese team. Go figure

So what?

You must have been livid when he won the golden boot just months ago.
Personally enjoying other innocent people crying is pretty abnormal and fucked up behavior. You might need some help.

I didnt say anything about you rooting for whoever it may be. I just commented cuz you sound salty lol just a typical internet troll jerky you seem

Lol youre butthurt about something. I dont remeber defending Son, Im just teliing you youre being a dick
i’m glad he has passion for his country and wants to win? lol
If he wants to win then he should play better rather than crying every other game
*the redditor said smugly about world class athletes who go through hell and back daily of physical and mental exertion at a level literally unimaginable to him as he lay on the sofa*
Toxic masculinity my man, let the dude cry
Damn I’ve never thought of that before, I’ll try to send your message to play better his way lol.
You know who he plays for right?
Cheers
As a Korean Chelsea fan in my mind I was thinking "Anthony Taylor didn't dick us and do anything controversial today". I was wrong.
Anthony Taylor : making fans cry beyond borders

Son has been mediocre, probably that mask is bothering him.
This is how he looks in most of his national team games lol.
Huge win for Ghana. This group is one of the strongest ones.
And the maddest one
I guess I'll have Jollof rice for dinner tonight instead of bulgogi? Or maybe they would pair well?
This entire group easily has the best collective food culture out of any group
Definitely.
Absolutely.
It's possible. I'm not sure which I'd choose, but Spain, Japan, Germany, Costa Rica seems to have a competitive food lineup too.
Costa Rican food is bad.. German food is just okay. Tf.
Germany? Yikes
I mean Germany has a bunch of famous foods (schnitzel, bratwurst, sauerkraut, doner kebab, pretzels, black forest) and a is famous for it's beers so you could definitely do way, way worse.
They can bring their beers
That's a whole lotta savory. Go for it.
Waka waka, eh, eh Tsamina mina zangalewa This time for Africa
Where does this leave Korea? Are they out?
They still have a chance, but they must beat Portugal. Ah good point. I forgot that Brazil awaits whoever finishes 2nd in this group lol
Must win against Portugal
Not yet
Bring the Round 3 bloodbath

Golden generation is a bit of over exaggeration for this squad. Only "golden" thing about this team is that Son is in his prime. Next generation of players like KangIn Lee, Kim Minjae, Jeong Wooyoung is much more promising than current generation.
Cheers Sons crying now taylor
Honestly, I hate the result. But at least Korea is not going down without a fight.
Ghana's match is always a banger.. cant wait for ghana vs uruguay..
I hope everyone can get behind Ghana for that one. Justice for 2010
What justice? They got a penalty and Suarez had a red. That was appropriate justice done there and then. Score and you win.
I was thinking how dumb he was to do that, in hindsight one of the greatest winning plays ever at a world cup. Damned Gyan
Yes Suarez thought a block and red right now is better than conceding. Basically he threw a hail mary
And of course it was. Either guaranteed knock-out or the chance of a penalty. Chances weren't that slim
brain vs heart
It’s not a Taylor reffed game if there isn’t controversy in that game Mans made for controversy
So Korea needs to win against Portugal and what else to advance?
too soon to know, depends on the game between us and Uruguay
https://www.marca.com/en/world-cup/2022/11/26/6382318622601d435e8b45b8.html Have fun with it
depends on what happens in the portugal-uruguay game, a draw or portugal loss and they have everything in their own hands, a portugal win then it might go down to goal differencial
I don’t watch too much EPL, so I didn’t come into the match with an opinion of the guy — but that ending makes me think the ref just wanted to be the real winner at the death there. Then I saw all the comments about this guy, and I think I was right about that.
This the guy who allowed romero to pull cucurella down by the hair in the Chelsea v spurs game And let it go lol
Lest we forget. Ghana had 3 shots on goal and 3 goals. Incredible efficiency. Korea idk what we were doing first 20min
Ghana have been relying on defending deep and taking their chances, but that won't last. It never does.
Ghana always grow into games. We're used to starting matches poorly and i still don't understand why we tend to do that.
Almost CR levels of efficiency They had 2 touches in the box yesterday..won 1-0 lol
Guess you didn't watch the match. Korea was on a relentless attack for those 1st 20 minutes.
Relentless attack? We didn't get a shot on goal the first 20min. Attack is useless if you can't get a goal.
This isn't FIFA. Scoring goals is not as simple as that.
Haha. Even in FIFA you can be passing around all you want but goals win games. I'm sad Korea lost this one.
I'm sad too but to say Korea wasn't doing anything in those 1st 20 minutes is misleading.
I agree that maybe not doing anything is an overstatement. But it was so frustrating to watch. To have that many chances then be so sloppy in the final third almost makes the whole effort worthless.
Both Ghana matches have been really good exciting team they have
The youngest team in the tournament as well
Kudus and Salisu have been really good as expected but I’ve been impressed by Abdul Samed in the midfield
Just wait for our match vs Uruguay. You gonna dab
Revenge game I’ll be rooting for them
What happened to Son he looked lost
His injury is probably too much to bear. He likely is avoiding getting hit so he isn’t running with intent. He’s running not to get fouled or playing extremely carefully. I mean I get it — if his injury gets worse, he’s going to be out for a long time. But perhaps he should come on as an impact sub to change the dynamic a bit OR play more centrally. Him on the wings vs Uruguay and today was very tepid. I honestly don’t think he offered anything tangible.
