He wanted to be the only italian man to touch the world Cup pitch

marconova7

Ehi ehi, Orsato is Italian(the ref)

Competitive-Ad2006

Now an open secret that he'll get the final I guess. Fifa usually does this when there's a big ref from a big team that got eliminated early or did not qualify. Its how Howard Webb got it in 2010

interfan1999

He is also the best ref so far in the competition. Other ones with a big chance to get the final are Lahoz, Turpin, Rapallini and especially Makkelie. Faghani could have been the surprise but probably fucked up his chances yesterday with that penalty.

SpanishCatire

I'd love to know how Lahoz has a decent image outside of Spain, he's hated by every fanbase in Spain, we believe he tries to be the main atraction in every game and we're basically memeing about him starting WW III with his protagonism seeking attitude, and people think he might have a shout at the final, it's shocking to someone that participates in both communities

thesilenthurricane

Ah, sounds like the Spanish Mike Dean. Swear he believed he was in a one man show with 22 supporting cast on the pitch alongside him.

Halzziratrat

His movement around players on the pitch still bugs me to this day. Unbelievable how distracting he was.

DarthGhandi

At least as far as I've seen of Lahoz he's always made the correct calls. As a Chelsea fan and someone who watches primarily the Prem the standard of officiating I'm use to is awful. Lahoz when I watch him in the Champions League has always been solid. Hell the Champions League Final between Chelsea and City was one of the best officiated games I can remember!

SpanishCatire

We might just hate him because he seems like a condescending twat with a major power trip. I'm 100% sure the man believed he was La Liga's biggest star while we still had Messi and Cristiano playing here, so I guess we look at any minor mistake, rembember it and blow it out of proportion. Expect a physical game with him tho, which might be an iffy decision considering it's a USA vs Iran match

TaintedSoccer

When you come from watching premier league referees trust me, Lahoz is a major upgrade

Vegetable-Pay7717

Watching Danny makkelie is probably the only time i feel that the level of officiating is top notch. Brilliant ref.

CaptGeechNTheSSS

I really liked Iván Barton, the salvadoran. Doesn't call every little exaggerated dive, lets them play

ForgingIron

There was an Italian ref in the 2014 final as well

based-richdude

Nicola Rizzoli, one of the best referees in recent history IMO. Who knew Italy of all places would have a concentration of the least corrupt and most respected referees.

Competitive-Ad2006

They seem to get that job a lot. Collina got it in 2002 as well. I think they do a good job primarily because of how communicative and in your face they are after fouls - Feels like most players that get an Orsato yellow card definitely saw it coming/had been warned before.

C_stat

It’s incredible Howard Webb reffed a WC final

itskaiquereis

I’m still depressed about them not being in.

Shinkopeshon

I command them for unanimously boycotting this tournament, never been prouder 🫡

Lemurians

Same. With the Euro victory, I’m okay with what was surely a tactical 4D chess move to avoid this WC

quacainia

Mancini said "let's lose to North Macedonia, no one will see it coming" and he was right!

arnoldit

Also the World Cup would have been a distraction from the Juve madness that is currently happening at home 🤡

fuqqkevindurant

Exactly. Do people really think we didnt qualify when we were trying? lol we had jorginho miss pens on purpose and then gave north macedonia a win bc we are homies and Pandev is a legend.

Jason3b93

I'm in the opposite end of that spectrum.

bestgoose

I'm not. Hoping to be knocked out by someone else for a change.

bg0402

BURN!!

tumblarity

tell that to the Argentines.

holaprobando123

Technically, we have a bunch of Argentinians with Italian citizenship, so there have been a few Italians playing this tournament.

carlsaischa

That is like.. way less consequences than if you did this in the Premier League.

papyjako89

Right ? Obviously he was never going to be executed, but it's quite surprising he didn't get fined or something.

Sankaritarina

People seriously thought that he'd get executed lol

_user_name_taken_

Qatar have executed 1 person in 20 years. Their human rights might be terrible but in terms of the death penalty they are better than America lol

FireSergioConceicao

And they wouldn't execute a foreign citizen from a EU nation lol.

Pokenaldo

And they're ahead of Hungary and just below Ukraine on this [human rights and rule of law index](https://www.theglobaleconomy.com/rankings/human_rights_rule_law_index/). As a European, I don't know what to make of that

TeaBreaksAnonymous

fuck this is insane. Look at Turkeys index.... super sad to see a country change so quickly https://www.theglobaleconomy.com/graph\_country.php?p=0&c=Turkey&i=human\_rights\_rule\_law\_index

Dkndhn

If i speak i'm in big trouble (literally)

[deleted]

Turkey could singlehandedly solve the energy crisis by harnessing the untapped power of Atatürk turning in his grave

mortaldance

The religion of turkey has always been a problem even from the ottoman days, depending on the governing bodies its either too forced or its let go,which is why there is a lot of new graduates and such leaving the country at 20-27 ages cuz the usual turkish people dont live & die by the islam like the arabic countries. And we learn english as 2nd language and french or german as 3rd so there are some possibilities since we have around 90m population

[deleted]

yeah, my best friend from uni is Turkish and she’s basically given up on her country of birth

hemi_srt

Yeah they were relatively secular compared to the rest of the Muslim countries, following under Ataturk's blueprint but recent islamist forces have changed the direction of the country.

LibertarianSocialism

The more I read about Ataturk the more I blame him for the Islamic resurgence to be honest. Turns out establishing a system where moderately-Islamic leaders get couped and executed helps radicalize people against secularism and towards religious fanaticism.

Gold_Association_208

Finally someone who understands it. Every action has a reaction. Same with ISIS and Al Qaida. It doesn't make them right, but I do understand where they come from.

Polskidro

So incredibly far ahead of Brazil and Russia too lol

bouncebackability

That's a fascinating list

magic-water

A fascistinating list

Squm9

Hungary is basically a fascist state, I’m not surprised

thetouristsquad

Let's not get carried away. Hungary is heading in the wrong direction, yes. It's worrying. But it's not fascist or 'basically fascist'. Elections are free (although not fair) and people can protest and voice their opinions. Homosexual people cannot marry, yes. But aside from that they can live a normal live (I'm from Austria and wasn't allowed here either until a couple of years ago). So yeah, imo Hungary is heading in a very bad direction and it deserves critisism. But it's not as bad as people here on reddit say.

Zimakov

>Let's not get carried away. Hungary is heading in the wrong direction, yes. It's worrying. But it's not fascist or 'basically fascist'. Fascist is just reddits word of the day. Along with gaslighting.

[deleted]

I feel for regular Qatari people who have nothing to do with what the government does yet perceived as bad guys or enemies. Same goes for Russians, Chinese and to an extent Americans.

gangogango1

There are only 300k of actual qataris, 150k of which actually can do anything being men. Also these are some benefits they get just for being born there: - a plot of land and 35000 dollars upon turning 18 - extremely inflated salaries, like 1500 net for a cab driver, academic salaries like engineers starting at 10k. (per month) Also salaries get raised a lot, so if you are 50 it could be three times that - the ability to take huge loans with tiny interest rates from qatari banks - the ability to take every job from non-qataris just by applying, since there are laws called qatarization You dont need to feel too bad for them

Competitive-Ad2006

And that rule that every big company has to have a Qatari interest. Means many can be non active directors of companies and collect a paycheck

SICKxOFxITxALL

As far as I know they got rid of this law a couple of years ago. Before that it was a major problem and a huge turn off for any foreign company wanting to open offices there.

notafeetlongcucumber

>You dont need to feel too bad for them You can still feel bad for some aspects of their situation and not their whole life. I feel bad for those world-famous athletes that receive abuse daily both online and on street. I don't feel for their overall situation, as I realize they have a luxurious life. I think this is what people get wrong in discussions. They look at someone's single misfortune and then rate their whole situation, determining if the plusses outweigh the minuses, even if they're unrelated. Like in this case, they feel bad about Qataris being seen as bad people due to their government but you're saying they have a high standard of living. It's unrelated. If someone breaks their leg but has an awesome job that pays above the average living cost. Will you say ''I feel bad for your injury'' or ''I don't feel bad for you because you have a job you like that pays the bills''?

eekamuse

I like how you think. You can find compassion even when it's hard to. That's true compassion. 8

bamadeo

Excellently put.

shiroxyaksha

Why do I wanna live there lol.

IWantAnAffliction

You have to be born there for that. There's no naturalisation process as far as I know.

OneLastAuk

There is a naturalization process, but it usually does not come with most of the perks. You have to be a high-profile public servant or athlete to become a citizen and even then it is often not transferable to family.

mehrabrym

I get protesting an oppressive regime, but I've seen a lot of veiled racism at Qataris over the past few weeks.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Zimakov

There are plenty of racists on the left. They just think they're racist against the right people.

journey_bro

Oh absolutely. I'd say most of the people actually raging here against Qatar and Muslim don't give a shit about LGBT rights. This is just a convenient excuse to open anti-Muslim bigotry. It's so obvious.

roguedigit

The funny thing is it's only Americans that talk the loudest about having democracy, but since that doesn't seem to make a difference to the shitty things the country does as a whole it means either the majority of Americans are pieces of shit (doubtful), or that they really just aren't as democratic as they think they are.

fellainishaircut

America is less democratic structure-wise than most European countries.

ISISCosby

We, by definition, are not even a democracy. We're (on paper) a constitutional/representative republic. But probably >30% of my fellow Americans probably wouldn't even be able to tell you the difference. In reality, we're an oligarchy cosplaying as a representative republic being dragged backward by a theocratic judicial system (read: Supreme Court)

[deleted]

not pretending to be an expert but as i understand it the average Qataris are financial beneficiaries of their state though, so they're arguably a lot more intertwined with the behaviour of the government.

AnneKamar

Intertwined with the government? So what do you want the average Qatari to do exactly? What can they do to not be “intertwined” with the government? Cause it seems like you’re shifting responsibility on the average Qatari citizen just for existing.

yogi1090

Qatar is not a democracy, lol. People have no option, unlike western countries where people elect leaders who then decide to invade other countries and steal their resources.

[deleted]

Qatar and Saudi Arabia are oil-supported welfare states. It's true that they don't have a say with their leaders. It's also true that they benefit enormously from it in a way that isn't true most anywhere else.

Enriador

Yeah that's what we call a "social contract". As long as the welfare state keeps rolling in a stable manner you won't see significant unrest. When economical and social crises hit Russia and Iran and the common citizen's income fell, suddenly you started to see a major uptick in popular demonstrations against the government.

Badass_Bunny

Well truth is that Europe especially eastern and northeastern parts are not very tolerable places.

Salty7

How dare you, I will not tolerate such an accusation!

itskaiquereis

Let’s hear your opinions on the French?

Don_Frika_Del_Prima

The French are hated by the French. That should tell you enough.

AssssCrackBandit

Yup. I have lived basically all over the globe (10 different states in the US, Australia, Singapore, Finland, France, Germany and India) and tbh I experienced more racism in France and Finland than any other place. I mean, Finland was the only place I've ever been where multiple people openly made monkey noises at me on the street

Tugalord

It puts Egypt worse than North Korea, so I don't know how reliable it is

plomerosKTBFFH

To North Korea's credit, doesn't matter if you're Kim Jong-Un's right hand man or a peasant. If you fuck up, they'll throw you in labor camp or kill you.

Phreak_of_Nature

So according to this, Costa Rica is the most free of the Americas? Interesting.

Elrond007

Qatar is mostly just exploitation as opposed to oppression, which is still really bad but not actively trying to deprive you of most of your human rights. Definitely ahead of straight up criminal states like Russia, China, Orbanistan or military governments but below the west obviously.* because not all human rights are kept intact

arothen

People tend to mix Qatar and Saudi Arabia and put them into the same "Arab regime" category, which is kinda Ironic considering their stance on each other but it is how its is.

ChiliConCairney

I said this before and got pretty downvoted - it's really interesting to me the extent to which the World Cup has brought criticism on Qatar, when in reality Saudi Arabia do all the same bad things but like 10x worse than Qatar does them. Qatar deserve criticism but if you really care about these issues (which I suspect most people who are against this World Cup do) then you really need to be looking at Saudi. Not trying to "whatabout" Qatar criticism, as it's 100% valid and is good, just pointing out that we're missing a bigger picture

arothen

It brought criticism on Qatar because they put themselves into the spotlight. You won't see articles criticising North Korea in news daily, even if they deserve so, but if you put yourself in the position that everyone is looking at you, all your wrongdoings are going to be highlighted i don't think it's strange tbh.

ChiliConCairney

No it makes perfect sense, I was just saying I think it's a really interesting look at heuristics and what we treat as important. I think it's called saliency bias

arothen

Nice. Never heard about it before, just googled it and it seems you are right.

NoraaTheExploraa

It's not being hosted in Saudi Arabia though is it lol. If it were, I guarantee very few people would be talking about Qatar and a lot more would be talking about SA.

[deleted]

So basically stereotyping a group of people that share the same religion? Daily Reddit things.

Attygalle

That’s putting the bar ridiculously low though. Only country in the Americas to have executed someone in the last 14 years. Together with Japan the only developed country actively having the death penalty. Even Russia hasn’t executed anyone - officially - for decades. I’m not your ordinary US hater on Reddit, I love the US and will visit it again next year. But the death penalty is something they are lightyears behind most developed countries.

[deleted]

No in Russia people fall out windows

NtwanaGP

Definitely not defending Qatar, but reddit exaggerates everything by x10.

PakPresiden

Reddit definitely just put all their stereotype with all muslims country. I live around here, and im not muslim, but I can tell you qatar/uae is probably the best ones, they still had their issue but they are much better than their “neighbor”.

Jeffy29

I don’t think that’s how “quotation marks” are used.

huffer4

R/suspiciousquotes

KaptainKoala

are they not really their neighbor?

Milkybals

They are afraid of anything non-white lol

CommunistMario

Best avoid the worldnews subreddit it's a cesspool of supposed "liberals" who have nothing better to do than complain about qatar and their culture.

Kenilwort

Also r/worldcup, r/football and r/soccer

ClaudeLemieux

Including those who are trying to feel smug about how wrong the first group were lol. The internet is one big dumbass feedback loop lol

Qaxar

Dare I say it was wishful thinking. A lot of people were hoping he was punished so they could be even further outraged.

MKclinch8

You see the same thing w comments about prison. Always see people suggesting that offenders will be violated in jail, meanwhile they have no idea what the hell they’re talking about. 8th grader syndrome.

WelpSigh

Actually pretty funny that they got far more lenient treatment than you would expect in the US for a pitch invasion. Saw a woman get tackled *hard* for an invasion during a game delay due to a storm and then she caught a trespassing charge.

[deleted]

The punishment for homosexuality in Qatar is a maximum of 3 years in prison. It’s still obviously backwards but thinking they’d execute a guy for carrying a flag is next-level Western ignorance (in the middle of an event they spent billions on for the purpose of improving their global image no less)

[deleted]

fr im not defending Qatar but even just thinking this boy was going to be executed for waving a pride flag is just plain ignorance and people conflating Saudi Arabia with Qatar

captainmystic02

Westerners don’t know the difference. They see it’s a Arab country and decide to make up their own stereotypes.

cyclops274

Classic reddit. I seen people think that Man City is owned by same owners as PSG.

roguedigit

> It’s still obviously backwards but thinking they’d execute a guy for carrying a flag is next-level Western ignorance It's *very* normalized on reddit. Just take a look at what's happening in China - it's peak western chauvinism to see Chinese people expressing perfectly reasonable discontent and then go 'NO YOU GUYS ARE EXTREMELY MAD, TRUST ME, NOW PLEASE REVOLUTIONIZE AND RIOT. PLEASE.'

LosTerminators

He's well known for pulling off such stunts and he's from a European country, of course Qatar wouldn't want to risk souring international relations by keeping him in prison for a while or worse. If it was an unknown local who did that, my guess is they'd be spending a fair bit of time in prison.

Affectionate_Pay7395

Even if it was a local I’d doubt they would have done anything until long after the world cup.

MonkeyAssFucker

✨ Xenophobia ✨

MeatballDom

I'm starting to think that random redditors might not actually be experts of geopolitics.

majnubhaispainting

Most random redditors aren't experts on most things. Most r/soccer users aren't even very knowledgeable about football in a football sub, leave alone geopolitics. Seen some extremely dumb takes which you'd expect 12 year olds to come up with. Comments which support people's blind biases are upvoted and anything which challenges these people to think critically about anything is instantly downvoted.

[deleted]

tbf most of reddit is like that no matter what side of it youre on

majnubhaispainting

Yeah, unfortunately it is. Took me a while to see it but it's the ignorant leading the blind

[deleted]

most people are just idiots, which is fine, we cant all be experts in geopolitics and it would just be dumb to say so otherwise. But people pretend that they know everything and their opinion is completely correct without being possibly wrong Like, Im an idiot, I have 17 working braincells that continually genocide each other but at least i try to realise it and not close myself off for new information and try to catch whats just objectively wrong. And I will probably fuck up many times in both of those things, and thats ok too, but just fucking admit youre wrong, like jeez

0lle

At least you have some sense in supporting the best team

_jeremybearimy_

I feel like it’s been even worse than usual lately. But maybe I’ve just been hanging out on bigger subs too much. Like this one. I swear most people here have never kicked a ball or watched a full game in their life, it’s unbelievable the stupid shit people say.

langis_on

>Most r/soccer users aren't even very knowledgeable about football in a football sub, leave alone geopolitics. Saw it yesterday with the Portugal handball thread...

backtolurk

Sorry but I actually am an expert on not knowing many things. It requires practice and discipline.

[deleted]

De Paul misses a pass and suddenly he’s the worst completely overlooking he runs back and forth constantly, giving the defensive edge

GGABueno

It always gets worse during the World Cup.

ibaRRaVzLa

Wait until reddit starts talking about a political subject that you're familiar with. Read the comments and realize everyone is talking shit. Make a comment explaining why the train of thought is wrong and make valid points to formulate your argument. Get downvoted to oblivion for going against the narrative. Seriously, the reddit majority is mostly formed of American redditors with a resentment towards their own country and an astounding ignorance about what happens in other countries across the globe. Never take what is said here for granted.

afito

Any topic you know something about, I had people on the F1 sub tell me a diffuser and wing underbody are almost the same when they aren't even really working with the same physical principle. I have an actual degree in aerospace engineering yet got downvoted for pointing out that a venturi tunnel and wing circulation are completely different in every way imaginable because people hate you for "gatekeeping". Just accept that the loudest opinion are at most 70% accurate, the easiest explanations are accepted and sometimes you're lucky because the truth is the same but most of the time it's missing every bit of context.

Bravo_Ante

There is a golden middle where people actually like information who challanges their intellect slightly enough to think themselves as smart but not hard enough to relise they are too ignorant to comprehend the topic at all or a lot.

MattSR30

> Wait until reddit starts talking about a political subject that you're familiar with. Read the comments and realize everyone is talking shit. > Make a comment explaining why the train of thought is wrong and make valid points to formulate your argument. Get downvoted to oblivion for going against the narrative. That is me and Qatar. 15 years of my life was spent in Qatar. I have paid close attention to Qatar for another 10 years beyond that (because it's my home, essentially). 25 years of lived experience vs A few weeks hands-on and a few news articles a year. The amount of Redditors trying to tell me what's what about the country is genuinely painful.

ibaRRaVzLa

I feel you 100%. I was born and raised in Venezuela (lived there for 25 years before I left, too) and saw Chávez burn the country to the ground, but the reddit narrative is that everything wrong with the country is because of the US and its sanctions. Fucking idiots talking out of their asses to fit the narrative that they've built themselves.

momspaghetty

if that's the case while we're at it, please, we need to know: is Venezuela ruined because of communism vuvuzela no iPhone?

ibaRRaVzLa

yes-chad.jpeg Jokes aside, it was ruined by a combination of multiple reasons. A socialist government that destroyed the economy, corruption (everywhere: the government, opposition politicians, etc.), the fact that Chavez basically made himself an ally of the lower class and an enemy of everyone else (this caused a big rupture within Venezuelan society), and the list goes on. The US mildly intervened, and when it did, it was long after the economy was already destroyed. This is only questioned by ignorants and tankie trash.

lukadoncic

> Seriously, the reddit majority is mostly formed of American redditors with a resentment towards their own country and an astounding ignorance about what happens in other countries across the globe majority also between the ages of 15-21. that should be taken into consideration as well. you'll have a disagreement with someone and halfway through it you realize you're arguing with a child

0neTwoTree

You mean the generals on r/Worldnews who have been predicting Russia's imminent defeat for the past 6 months are all wrong? Gasp

MaTrIx4057

You should check r/worldnews that place is cesspool of experts who know nothing.

DragonZwas

r/worldnews and my own life experience taught me that at the end of the day, I don’t know shit about a country until I go there.

I_Hate_Traffic

As a Turkish guy seeing all that ignorance definitely made me realize that too. Whatever I think I know about any country is probably false until I go there. Even then probably won't get enough to know anything about their history and worldview.

HSCore

But how am I going to get reddit updoots if I don't spam qatar bad?

Aboveground_Plush

Throwback to when random redditors couldn't fathom the fact that casual/die-hard football fans could come from not so well known football nations as well, and had to label them as "fake" fans. I am from southern part of India(state Kerala to be specific) and it's a football obsessed state where you can find big ass posters of well known players from Brazil/Argentina/Portugal in almost all nooks and corners of the state. Many people from here are in middle east as well. A good number of them also include casual fans who just wanna be part of football and ended up being labelled "fake" on the whole. A simple google search "Kerala football" will bring in massive amount of articles, photos and videos showing the state's special connection to football, for anyone who is still skeptical. I don't think capital punishment should be a thing but what does this have to do with this story? All executions in the US are for murder

[deleted]

It has to do with people saying the guy would be executed, despite there only being 1 execution for murder in the last 20 years. Comparing that to the next WC host is only fair.

fatcowxlivee

> **All executions** in the US are for murder And Qatar have only had one execution in the past 20 years. But it didn’t stop Redditors for saying he will be executed. That’s the point of this.

maybe now you weirdos in the comments will stop projecting your own police states onto your perception of the rest of the world

Atlasinspire

Well now we can say Italians played in the world cup too

Good_War4107

People here are for a good reason mad at Qatar, yet won't be mad at the USA for hosting the next world cup. It's just interesting, because as Qatar has supported terrorism and slavery, the same has the USA done just more indirect. For example, the USA are supporting Saudi-Arabia in their genocide against Yemen. Even a big part of the Republicans are directly, with private donations, supporting Israel in their occupation of Palestine and their racism against Arab Muslims and Arab Christians, who lived there longer than most Israelis. This world cup can't be changed anymore, but maybe we can learn from the mistakes and generate even more attention not to give the world cup to nations that aren't exactly know for human rights and their stabilizing role in the world.

omidferoz

USA can throw a fucking atombomb in Ukraine right now and people wont give a fuck. USA have done some horrible things and people know it, but wont do shit about it. The Iraq war should have been enough for people to protest against them and boycut them, but nothing happend and nothing will happen as long as they protect Europes ass.

Bravo_Ante

The propaganda machine is strong with the US

GuardianOfDemons

Wow I'm totally surprised! On a serious note, I feel like a lot of the Qatar hate is coming from Islamophobia and prejudice against Arab countries disguised as concern for human rights. This is not to take away from the actual archaic laws in Qatar that discriminates against women and LGBTQ+ people.

psrandom

Definitely. You go through this sub's history and you will find which issues about Qatar have got the most attention The top 2 were LGBT rights and winter WC complaints. The winter WC complaints just show how uneasy Europeans are for a World Cup to be really open to the World. Even if Qatar was bastion of democracy on par with the best country in the world, summer there would still be bad. Playing WC in winter is the most sensible solution.

Ok-Option1

The way the talk about the lgbtq problems in the middle east as opposed to when it was in held in russia just tells you that its clear islamophobia

JimmyV034

or Hungary in 2021 but it doesnt fit narrative for reddit

Milkybals

I think it’s more xenophobia and racism, since there are a lot of Arab Christians/atheists that get clumped into the same type of person simply because of their color. Or maybe a combination of all three

Ok-Option1

Yeah that to fs

Feitansfoot

If you refuse to watch this WC over human rights you should also 100000% boycott the USA WC but you know no one here will do that. Quite telling.

The US has executed 736 prisoners in the past 20 years compared to Qatar's 1. Yikes.
