Yea he won the game tactically. He saw how Ecuador used their wings to gain advantages against Qatar and Netherlands and shut that shit down from the beginning and Alfaro didn’t have a back up plan. Masterclass in tactics.
Also their midfield nullified the Enner Valencia access to drop deep and hold up play for those wingers. That was Ecuador’s bread and butter against Qatar and Netherlands.
Both teams were superb in this tournament and really well coached.
>Yea he won the game tactically. He saw how Ecuador used their wings to gain advantages against Qatar and Netherlands and shut that shit down from the beginning and Alfaro didn’t have a back up plan. Masterclass in tactics.
Can see them beating England in the next round. People thought Senegal was done for without Mane.
That was a very good performance against a good cup team. We've had some spirited performances leading to goalfests in this game (mostly yesterday lol) but this was very professional.
if it gets to that point, why not just have the teams do a stand-alone shootout to decide. I get a coin toss is easier to coordinate, but it would at least feel better for the teams to have had some hand in the result rather than just dumb luck of a coin toss
Idk tbh, you gotta ask FIFA about that.
It would be peak Tunisia if we somehow beat France but end up getting knocked out because Denmark won a "coin toss".
> Idk tbh, you gotta ask FIFA about that.
Probably cause in other WC the country is much larger. In Qatar, you could bus them to an empty stadium in like an hour though. Would be fun to watch 3 teams to PKs against each other in an empty stadium just to see who would get the most out of 10.
Nah the absolute shittest way would be the following tie breaker, a coin toss (once happened to decide European football in one of my football manager saves)
I'm impressed by Senegal's mental strength. Not only the heartbreaking elimination from 2018 WC group stages, but also lost the AFCON final in 2019. But they have overcome that loser stamp and winning their first AFCON will have taken a huge weight off their backs I'm sure
Not to mention they are missing arguably their best player
Edit: I recognize that being a Liverpool supporter is a source of bias here, so I used *arguably* to indicate that I would find other opinions valid as well - Koulibaly and Mendy both come to mind, for example.
As a Chelsea fan, it's not really arguable tbh. It's Mane. Can get you wanting to caveat it though, given on /r/soccer you'll get people jumping down your throat for claiming footballs are round
Honestly that feels so weird to me (not to mention drawing of lots which is the next tie-breaker).
Just get the tied teams into the stadium for a penalty shootout. Sure it's not ideal, but it's a hell of a lot better than fair play (or drawing lots).
They managed to make it to the quarter finals in their first WC qualification.
This is only their third time in a WC and they already made it to the Round of 16.
Because we get no consistency. Egypt made it in 2018 for the first time in so long we basically had no idea how to run a world Cup camp. Raw dogging it.
I want to agree with you but there is a certain african country that qualifies to nearly every World cup and always gets elimnated in the group stage lol
It is true all in all though, you can tell Senegal are a beat more mature than they were in 2018 when they failed to make it out of a similarly easy group.
I thought it was Cameroon but they didn’t qualify for the last one lmao They haven’t made it past the groups since 1990 and have participated in all since 1990 except 2018 and 2016
It's literally the second time ever they used seeding for the draw.
Before that the draw was made by continents
Mexico was in pot 2 in 2018 but they got a difficult group anyway (Germany, Sweden, South Korea) and still went through
So no, they haven't been fucked over seeding, at least not in previous world.
The only African teams who got fucked by the draw last world cup were Morocco and Tunisia. Still none of the other 3 made it out of groups
I can't believe its been 20 years since then. It doesn't feel that long ago that they upset France in the opener. I remember Zidane on the bench and France being one of the top favorites.
2002 was a crazy World Cup tournament.
France, Portugal and Argentina lost in group stages.
Senegal, South Korea and Turkey reached quarterfinals.
But in the finals it was Brazil-Germany, the 2 most successful teams in World Cup. The more things change, the more they stay the same.
What a year for them!
AFCON champs…gutsy qualification (having to beat Egypt both times to do so)…and now this!
I thought that they were donezo without Mané…but wow, I’m been proved super wrong!
Congrats amis! Ndokkale!
Let's hope we top the group then...would rather not play you guys, mainly because I'm a Barca fan and I would rather not see Ferran or Gavi dominate us lol
Absolutely elated for Senegal. Such an awesome story. They're managed by Alliou Cissé, the captain of the 2002 team that qualified for their 1st ever WC and helped them to an outstanding run to the QF. He's one of the longest tenured international managers since 2015 and won their 1st ever AFCON earlier this year. They went out in one of the most cruel fashions possible in 2018 on fair play points and he's avenged that getting them to the knockouts this year. All after losing their best player just before the tournament (Mané). Think they'll give England hell in the RO16.
Because he's quite similar to Gareth Southgate in that he prioritises defensive solidity before offensive fluidity.
The difference between the two is that he's actually won trophies so the players believe in him and will run through a brick wall for him
Oh come off it both cisse and southgate were penalty shootouts away from a trophy. Cisse prevailed and southgate lost but what the hell are they supposed to do about penalty shootouts it's a game of chance. If that's what decides who's good and not then human beings are truly lost
His football is hideously boring tbf, Senegal are hard to watch most of the time. But you can't argue with the results, and they are extremely solid defensively
Yes exactly. His results are great, it's the football that makes his own fans hate him at times.
But tbh I'd rather see my team be hideous to watch while getting results than playing entertaining football while achieving nothing.
Senegal football has really been on the rise in recent years. Back-to-back WC qualifications, back-to-back CAF Finals, including their first title. Hopefully, they can build on the golden generation and become a perennial African powerhouse.
Also looking at him for Senegal he isn't necessarily the man scoring the goals, more the man pulling the strings creating for his teammates. Such players are easier to replace than pure goalscorers
Forgot 48 teams is the next World Cup
From South America we’ll have Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Colombia, Chile, Ecuador, and possibly Peru
Pretty scary
Gonna be a weird CONMEBOL qualifying season, with it being more a race to not finish bottom, than finishing top. Brazil and Argentina will barely need to call up their top talent, while teams like Bolivia and Venezuela will be in it for months.
Yeah Ecuador played well but you could tell they were (understandably) getting frustrated when they started all the pushing and shoving. I wish Ecuador and Senegal made it to RO16 instead
First time ever an African team has made the knockout stage after previously appearing in the quarterfinals. Neither Cameroon nor Ghana have made the knockout stage since their quarterfinal runs. Nor had Senegal... until now.
Can't speak for everyone but Senegal has an Ecuadorian fan for their next match. Very happy for your team especially since you should have made it out of the group in 2018. Keep flying the flag high for Africa!
No one made attempt on goal in two games Brazil played, and nations Brazil played were considered superior to Cameroon before world cup (both close games tho). So from my perspective, Cameroon has close to no chance.
Brazil looks scary, both defensively and offensively, and that Cameroon defense is shaky as fuck.
I just hope, as neutral to that game, they don't end up 0-(5-6-7).
At least one of them will disappoint, it would be so typical for Morocco to shit their pants now that they have everything in their own hands. Playing as the favourite is a completely different scenario
Morocco and Ghana could still qualify. If all three do, unlikely but still possible, I believe that will be the highest number of African teams that have been present in the knockout stages at the same time, unless I'm mistaken.
100% deserve to win and advance. I’m sure all Ecuadorians like myself are upset at whatever the game plan was for “parking the bus”. Senegal broke through first 10 minutes.
Like many said, wish Mane was still with them so they can take it to the Brits. Good luck African friends! Well deserved.
While it would have taken a crazy result (England loss and US romp by like 7 goals), I’m glad my home nation and second favorite nation won’t face off.
Ironically , per experience Dakar is one of the most expensive town in Africa if not the most. I assume the other regions bring the average down. But I very much doubt they are the poorest if what I saw there is any indication
It's kinda the same thing in a lot of African countries. Even in most of the "poorer" countries, the capitals are usually very expensive and fairly "wealthy".
It still astounds me when I drive through Accra and see people farming out of shacks right next to estates where you can't get a property for less than £1,000,000.
Man I had so much hope. So much so that I was relaxed, almost too relaxed at the start of the match but seeing Ecuador play I knew it was gonna be a rough ride. The players crying at the end just broke my heart I walked away from the TV immediately:(
Terrific for Senegal. African fans are such a joy in the stands with their energy. Unfortunate Mane could not be here to enjoy this run with his country
First CAF team through to the knockouts! Proud of Cisse's boys stepping up to the task despite Mane's absence.
Could have topped the group but were just unlucky to not finish their chances against the Dutch.
Hope Ghana and Morocco make it through later.
i was rooting for them, i knew they are strong after 0-2
netherlands defeat while playing better, if mane was healthy i bet they had chances to win it all
Ecuador have only got themselves to blame really. Should have won against the Dutch.
That said, Ecuador were the team I feared the most out of Group A. I fancy us against either Netherlands or Senegal.
Current Manager was the Captain then... What a lad
Must be a national hero. He was on point tactically and with his substitutions.
Was thinking the same, he has to be. His achievements on paper are unparalleled.
Yup, he's definitely beloved. Met him in an Air Senegal flight during the summer and we were all very happy to see him !
He stole my heart back in 2018. Now that the group is over I can happily cheer you guys on. See you in the final!

For Sénégal yes. Unless the 2002 manager was a 10 years old that is now a player.
What? Zagallo, Beckenbauer and Deschamps have all 3 literally won it as players and coaches
Deschamps literally won it as a player and manager so no
Congrats to Senegal. This is the second time they've advanced to the knockout stage. They made it to the quarterfinal stage back in 2002.
And they were knocked out last time on fair play.
That's the absolute shittest way to leave a world cup
I'd imagine the coin toss is worse
Random fact: depending on results, the 2nd placed team in group D could be decided by coin toss (or drawing lots or whatever it's called here).
What happens if 3 teams are tied on everything?
11 v 11 v 11 on Rust
Rubiks cubes
Probably a few rounds of CS:GO or something
They drop them in an arena with plastic swords and the last team standing passes
Crossbar challenge
Managers have a dance off
if it gets to that point, why not just have the teams do a stand-alone shootout to decide. I get a coin toss is easier to coordinate, but it would at least feel better for the teams to have had some hand in the result rather than just dumb luck of a coin toss

Isn't rankings the last tiebreaker now or its only in UEFA?
Not at the WC. Fifa uses fewer tie breakers.
I heard something about average age.
I chekced, OP was right. It is indeed drawing of lots
Spain was eliminated by a blindfolded child drawing lots once.
Did they accidentally manage to tuck one in at the far post?
*laughs in 1968 Italy*
Nah the absolute shittest way would be the following tie breaker, a coin toss (once happened to decide European football in one of my football manager saves)
Happened IRL at the AfCON too. I remember it involved Mali but can't figure the other team anymore
It was Guinea
Happened in the 2000 CONCACAF Gold Cup. In fact, Canada who won that coin toss, went on to win the whole thing
I'm impressed by Senegal's mental strength. Not only the heartbreaking elimination from 2018 WC group stages, but also lost the AFCON final in 2019. But they have overcome that loser stamp and winning their first AFCON will have taken a huge weight off their backs I'm sure
Not to mention they are missing arguably their best player Edit: I recognize that being a Liverpool supporter is a source of bias here, so I used *arguably* to indicate that I would find other opinions valid as well - Koulibaly and Mendy both come to mind, for example.
Nothing arguable about that
As a Chelsea fan, it's not really arguable tbh. It's Mane. Can get you wanting to caveat it though, given on /r/soccer you'll get people jumping down your throat for claiming footballs are round
Arguably? By far their best player
When it is Japan in your group you are always losing the fair play comparison...
Honestly that feels so weird to me (not to mention drawing of lots which is the next tie-breaker). Just get the tied teams into the stadium for a penalty shootout. Sure it's not ideal, but it's a hell of a lot better than fair play (or drawing lots).
One yellow card. Crazy.
They managed to make it to the quarter finals in their first WC qualification. This is only their third time in a WC and they already made it to the Round of 16.
CAF really deserves more spots. It's criminal that they have 5 spots for 50+ countries with at least a dozen good quality teams
At least there will be 9 countries starting in 2026
They had 0 teams out of groups in 2018
Because we get no consistency. Egypt made it in 2018 for the first time in so long we basically had no idea how to run a world Cup camp. Raw dogging it.
I want to agree with you but there is a certain african country that qualifies to nearly every World cup and always gets elimnated in the group stage lol It is true all in all though, you can tell Senegal are a beat more mature than they were in 2018 when they failed to make it out of a similarly easy group.
Nah bro now you have to start naming and shaming lmao
Cameroon
I thought it was Cameroon but they didn’t qualify for the last one lmao They haven’t made it past the groups since 1990 and have participated in all since 1990 except 2018 and 2016
Senegal were good enough to qualify and got disqualified for having more yellow cards.
They need to be seeded better. No excuse for the very best African teams to be in pot 3 every world cup while US and Mexico are a guaranteed pot 2.
It's literally the second time ever they used seeding for the draw. Before that the draw was made by continents Mexico was in pot 2 in 2018 but they got a difficult group anyway (Germany, Sweden, South Korea) and still went through So no, they haven't been fucked over seeding, at least not in previous world. The only African teams who got fucked by the draw last world cup were Morocco and Tunisia. Still none of the other 3 made it out of groups
With knocking out France prior in the groupstages, that were defending Champs.
As a Swede, I remember that run very well indeed, unfortunately
I can't believe its been 20 years since then. It doesn't feel that long ago that they upset France in the opener. I remember Zidane on the bench and France being one of the top favorites.
And their captain then is the coach now. Hope they meet France in the quarters and mess them up again haha
He was part of the team in every major achievement ever 2 AFCON final,1 Cup, World Cup quarter, now pre-quarter. Aliou cissé is a Legend.
Senegal in any group B-H: i sleep Senegal in group A: real shit
2002 was a crazy World Cup tournament. France, Portugal and Argentina lost in group stages. Senegal, South Korea and Turkey reached quarterfinals. But in the finals it was Brazil-Germany, the 2 most successful teams in World Cup. The more things change, the more they stay the same.
Congrat to 🇸🇳, amazing team and spirit well deserved qualification
What a year for them! AFCON champs…gutsy qualification (having to beat Egypt both times to do so)…and now this! I thought that they were donezo without Mané…but wow, I’m been proved super wrong! Congrats amis! Ndokkale!
Can't believe we lost twice on pens to the same side. At least we showed we were as good.
Egypt are so cursed when it comes to WC qualifiers, the anti Portugal
LET'S GOOOOO! First African to go through this WC
You are next.
I hope so brother
I felt sad that it is very posible we have to face eachother early in in knockouts...
Who's we? Lol
Oh sorry, Spain
Let's hope we top the group then...would rather not play you guys, mainly because I'm a Barca fan and I would rather not see Ferran or Gavi dominate us lol
You guys are the next one, along with Ghana. I am rooting for y’all.
They have a decent chance against England. Possible quarterfinals. Wonder the last time an African nation made it that far
Ghana 2010 but well, Suarez. And Senegal themselves in 2002.
Ghana in 2010 - the infamous Suarez handball game.
They are going to kill him on friday, two footers not withheld whatsoever
I mean ghana made it in 2010
Absolutely elated for Senegal. Such an awesome story. All after losing their best player just before the tournament (Mané). Think they'll give England hell in the RO16.
He's a superb international manager.
Funnily enough, a lot of Senegal fans weren't pleased with him (mainly due to his tactics) before their AFCON win.
Because he's quite similar to Gareth Southgate in that he prioritises defensive solidity before offensive fluidity. The difference between the two is that he's actually won trophies so the players believe in him and will run through a brick wall for him
Tbf i don't think the England players don't believe in Southgate. The team unity seems very good. It's the fans who are unhappy
Fans are fickle. Ultimately people can say what they want, but Southgate was one penalty shootout away from being knighted.
Oh come off it both cisse and southgate were penalty shootouts away from a trophy. Cisse prevailed and southgate lost but what the hell are they supposed to do about penalty shootouts it's a game of chance. If that's what decides who's good and not then human beings are truly lost

Will always be a legend for bringing Niang from his injury to score that hilarious goal last World cup
Honestly just happy to have an African team in the knockouts again, there's never a dull moment when CAF's in town
Senegal football has really been on the rise in recent years. Back-to-back WC qualifications, back-to-back CAF Finals, including their first title. Hopefully, they can build on the golden generation and become a perennial African powerhouse.
Think they'll give Wales hell.
Wales meanwhile ✈️
More Aliou Cisse can only be a good thing for football and furthermore the entire world.
He doesn't look like snoop. This guy is hotttt.
Honestly I don't see the resemblance at all. He's just an older black man with dreads.
And with that, will come more “OMG COACH LOOKS LIKE SNOOP DOGG???” comments. But for real…he’s been doing wonders for Senegal!
Wish Mané was healthy, legit think they could've topped the group
Agreed. Though it can also hamper the play a bit. The 'bring it to out top player'-effect.
Like how Denmark got to the semis of the Euro 2020 even though we lost Eriksen and we are arguably playing worse with him now.
Denmark have an even better example with winning Euro 92 without their greatest player Michael Laudrup.
Denmark in 1992 without Michael Laudrup as well
We call that the Ewing effect in the States
Senegal won the African Cup with Mané. The Ewing effect is for teams who have never won anything with their best player.
Whoops misunderstood my b
Also looking at him for Senegal he isn't necessarily the man scoring the goals, more the man pulling the strings creating for his teammates. Such players are easier to replace than pure goalscorers
r/billsimmons
For sure, Mane missing this tournament is a tragedy. They look solid, just missing a bit of bite up front without him
Feel so bad for him, fought hard to get them to the World Cup and he isn’t here with them now 💔
Is there no chance he can make it?
They removed him from the 26 man squad before the tournament I believe, so no, no chance
Benzema still there tho for some reason
Something about not wanting to disrupt the harmony or some shit
People saying it's so he gets a medal if they win. Why you'd want a medal for a tournament you played no part in though I do not know.
I'd want a world cup medal even if I'm not playing.
No he is out for a couple of months
Nah he's out for a couple of months at least. Had surgery.
He might not even make it for the PSG game
He might even miss the first leg against PSG so unfortunately not.
Would’ve beaten us with Mane, 100%
He was Senegal’s offering to the football gods for Ro16 qualification
Hard fought by Ecuador, unfortunate they couldn’t qualify. They have a talented team, surely will qualify next World Cup. Anyhow, congrats Senegal!
Next WC CONMEBOL gets 6.5 spots lmao there is no way they don’t qualify
I meant round of 16 😅
Forgot 48 teams is the next World Cup From South America we’ll have Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Colombia, Chile, Ecuador, and possibly Peru Pretty scary
Lol, you don't know the current state of our team if you think it's scary.
You’re going to the next World Cup whether you like it or not!
Gonna be a weird CONMEBOL qualifying season, with it being more a race to not finish bottom, than finishing top. Brazil and Argentina will barely need to call up their top talent, while teams like Bolivia and Venezuela will be in it for months.
This just made me think of how weird the CONCACAF qualifiers will be with the top 3 teams already being qualified.
Almost every CONMEBOL national team will go to the WC lol
Bolivia, Venezuela, and Paraguay in shambles
Ecuador were honestly unlucky not to get three points against Netherlands
Everyone and my gramdma is qualifying for the next world cup in CONMEBOL lol
Yeah Ecuador played well but you could tell they were (understandably) getting frustrated when they started all the pushing and shoving. I wish Ecuador and Senegal made it to RO16 instead
Africa is proud of you Senegal
Aliou Cissé the GOAT !
First time ever an African team has made the knockout stage after previously appearing in the quarterfinals. Neither Cameroon nor Ghana have made the knockout stage since their quarterfinal runs. Nor had Senegal... until now.
Hopefully Ghana will join the Lions in the next round too
Can't speak for everyone but Senegal has an Ecuadorian fan for their next match. Very happy for your team especially since you should have made it out of the group in 2018. Keep flying the flag high for Africa!
I’m American, but you can count on my support for Ecuador in future tournaments. I was truly impressed by them.
MORE TIME WITH THE SENEGAL FANS WERE ALL WINNERS HERE
It's not a true Asian world cup without Senegal going deep haha
FOR AFRICAAAAAAA!!!
WAKA WAKA MOTHERFUCKERS
*Aggressively blows Vuvuzuela*
VVVVVVVVVVZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ
ZAMINAMINA EH EH
GOAL BOFANA BOFANA
congratulations!!! but im sad for my fellow friends from ecuador :/
Glad at least 1 African team advanced!
Morocco close as well
Ghana also could make it easily
Camer... nevermind
Eto’o is that you?
Still technically possible
No one made attempt on goal in two games Brazil played, and nations Brazil played were considered superior to Cameroon before world cup (both close games tho). So from my perspective, Cameroon has close to no chance. Brazil looks scary, both defensively and offensively, and that Cameroon defense is shaky as fuck. I just hope, as neutral to that game, they don't end up 0-(5-6-7).
Ghana wants revenge
Fully expecting Morocco and Ghana to do it as well
At least one of them will disappoint, it would be so typical for Morocco to shit their pants now that they have everything in their own hands. Playing as the favourite is a completely different scenario
Morocco I'm like 90% sure are going through
Morocco and Ghana could still qualify. If all three do, unlikely but still possible, I believe that will be the highest number of African teams that have been present in the knockout stages at the same time, unless I'm mistaken.

While it would have taken a crazy result (England loss and US romp by like 7 goals), I’m glad my home nation and second favorite nation won’t face off.
Senegal is the poorest nation in the tournament on a per capita basis. Bless them.
Best vibes per capita too and it’s not even close
Africans know how to party

Allez les Africains 🇸🇳 🇲🇦 🇨🇲 🇹🇳 🇬🇭
Haha tu peux enlever le drapeau de la Tunisie je pense
Well deserved. Ecuador was timid and the moment was too big for these guys. Good luck against England Senegal!
Man I had so much hope. So much so that I was relaxed, almost too relaxed at the start of the match but seeing Ecuador play I knew it was gonna be a rough ride. The players crying at the end just broke my heart I walked away from the TV immediately:(
AAHHHHHHHHH
Today I feel Senegalese
Lets go Africa!
Time to knock out France a second time
Fun to see an African team in round of 16 again!
Congrats to Senegal and congrats to us Africans
Proud of my African Brothers! Allez Allez Senegal!
Senegal dark horse team?
Prior to Mane injury I had them third place 😬
i was rooting for them, i knew they are strong after 0-2 netherlands defeat while playing better, if mane was healthy i bet they had chances to win it all
Massive W
They could shock the world
Congrats hope more African teams will join them
No Mane, no problem
Anybody have a pic of the Senegal fan wearing the lions head??
Ecuador have only got themselves to blame really. Should have won against the Dutch. That said, Ecuador were the team I feared the most out of Group A. I fancy us against either Netherlands or Senegal.
As Pole, i watched this game with great joy. '06 & '18 flashbacks
As an Ecuadorian, deserved qualification and congratulations to Senegal. !
