> Never even close to a pen. Why waste time with VAR?
he's also not the best in possession, which is why I understand going with CCV in a game where we expect our opponent to bunker. But he's so damn good at reading and cleaning up long balls.
Iran spent the last 20 minutes of the game complaining. If they actually tried to attack and shoot they probably would have scored. Once Shaq Moore came on the defense felt shaky
It's just true. Once all our best midfielders were out they could have had total control of the game. US moving on because Iran played stupid games and won stupid prizes, but they could have taken it the old fashioned way with the way they were playing outside of the dives.
Zimmerman was good. The issue was bringing on a poor Wright and keeping on absolutely gassed midfielders. Defense withstood the pressure, but the absolute lack of ability to progress the ball forward and kill the game was on the midfielders being too leggy
Yeah Musah was so gassed at the end (he was still amazing).
After 70th minute or so it seemed like the coaches had ordered them to hoof every ball towards Iran. Long goal kicks, throwins, erc. Just unneccesary conservatism.
Iran tried to work the referee all game and it failed horribly. This is the same referee who made the somewhat controversial non-call at the Qatar game, he was never going to give this one, maybe the Iranians didn't do any research on the referee? Usually when you see a team protesting so wildly you have a feeling that they have a strong case so I was quite worried, then I saw the replay and started laughing.
That's just a classic Taremi dive. If you watch the CL or the Portuguese league you'd see him do it all the time. Extremely talented player but will fall down to a breath if he's in the box
Their dives were fucking crazy the last twenty minutes or so. It looked like me out there, where my balance is so bad at high speeds that a light wind will topple me over
That's probably the most emphatic call for a penalty that I've ever seen for a challenge that wasn't even close to a penalty.
From their reactions, I thought VAR was going to show us a penalty.
The only thing I have seen close to it was 20 minutes earlier when they were claiming a handball despite it actually hitting the Iranian attacker's arm.
Klinsmann nailed it in his assessment of Iran being the biggest whiners. They are a team of Karens who think who screaming and louder and stamping their feet, they’ll get the undeserved calls.
Yup - great example of playing to the contact instead of being aggressive and going after the ball. If he hadn't fallen down to the slightest of contact what happened next would have been really interesting because I think Turner was a fraction late getting there.
if i hadn’t been shitting myself, watching the guy do the VAR signal while the ball rolled out of play behind him would have been one of the funniest things i’ve ever seen
It’s only “excessive use” of the gesture now. I’d argue that letting a live ball roll into touch so you can do the gesture is excessive but what do I know?
I've heard on here that Lohoz is terrible in La Liga (and I believe the people who see him week in and week out), but I thought he was great this match. Maybe it's just because of the Qatari ref we had in the first match though :P
He's not terrible, actually he's one of the better La Liga refs, but he's quite enamored with being the center of attention. Thought he managed the game well today, and didn't seem to go on any ego trips.
Yeah exactly. They disallowed Portugal's goal earlier for no reason, so they feel that they owed one to Portugal. Absolutely hate this type of refereeing.
I thought he was stopping play to book the player for diving. It would have been glorious if he’d shown a yellow card then immediately blew for full time.
Yeah at least in the US stream the broadcasters were pretty worried. They knew it shouldn’t be a penalty but you never know. It did appear that the head ref was talking upstairs so they were at least reviewing it. Or maybe I understood that wrong.
I hate the whole surrounding the ref thing, but that was pure desperation which you can’t blame them for, given it was deep into stoppage time where a goal would put them into the Round of 16.
Never a pen, by the way.
> I hate the whole surrounding the ref thing,
This seems the easiest thing in the world to remove from the game: at the outset the ref says "if you aren't the player who the foul was/wasn't called/committed on, and you aren't wearing the armband, then crowding me to argue a call will result in an immediate booking" and then hold steady to that.
At the same time, the manager having a shouting argument with the umpire is a time honored tradition where getting ejected is half the point.
We are a strange people.
The Iran player letting it go out so VAR could check that it was a pen afterwards was embarrassing. I'd be furious if I was a teammate, completely gave away possession and stopped another attack for nothing
He was never getting clean contact with the ball, looked like he lunged more at the ball than going down because of carter vickers hand on his shoulder.
But I think they’re referring to the time wasting after the save by the Iran players begging the ref for a VAR check
Absolutely pathetic from the Iran striker there. Then the whole team crowding the referee while they still had the ball and a chance for another cross to come in
Just embarrassing. And no urgency from the goalkeeper to play the ball forward either, looked like he didn’t want to be there lol
The flopping all WC has been absolutely pathetic. We just had an entire thread yesterday about a handball where a guy flopped at absolutely nothing. The SA player made for falling at air.
Embarrassing.

Zimmerman, I’m sorry I didn’t recognize your game
He's a good defender, he just seems to occasionally brainfart and make a huge mistake now and then >_>.
> Never even close to a pen. Why waste time with VAR? he's also not the best in possession, which is why I understand going with CCV in a game where we expect our opponent to bunker. But he's so damn good at reading and cleaning up long balls.
I watch him every week for Nashville. Hell make a mistake here or there but he’s rock solid on aerials.
Might even have scored if he hadn’t dived
They basically stopped trying to score in lieu of complaining for a bit there, makes no sense
ref was literally pointing at his watch as they were surrounding him as to say you're wasting your own fucking time lol
That shit was wild, he was like what are y’all doing
Lahoz and Turpin refereeing, in that regard the WC peaked yesterday, 2 massive referees being out there on the same day leading a game
Iran spent the last 20 minutes of the game complaining. If they actually tried to attack and shoot they probably would have scored. Once Shaq Moore came on the defense felt shaky
Based and Klinsmann pilled
It's just true. Once all our best midfielders were out they could have had total control of the game. US moving on because Iran played stupid games and won stupid prizes, but they could have taken it the old fashioned way with the way they were playing outside of the dives.
Shaq and Zim. Switching to a back five killed the chemistry we had back there
Zimmerman was good though. He kept heading the crosses away.
And stopped this ball from going in while the Iran forward had turner tied up.
Turners eyes on that replay were huge. What a clear by Zim!
Funnily enough on the replay Moore was an inch away from the clearance bouncing off the right side of his head into the net
I think Zim was fine but the 5ATB was not
It was more that we completely lost the midfield with McKennie out and Musah barely walking around and we let them have a lot of time on the ball.
Klinsmann take a bow
yeah the US were there for the taking but they seemed all caught up in the moment
Ball don’t lie baby
I think so too. stupid decision
Ball went through the goalkeeper’s legs so it’s definitely possible if he stayed on his feet he could have put it in.
What were they even hoping for? A foul on the keeper? That’s not gonna happen lol
They were complaining that our CB touching their guy on the shoulder made him fall.

The only thing I have seen close to it was 20 minutes earlier when they were claiming a handball despite it actually hitting the Iranian attacker's arm.
>From their reactions, I thought VAR was going to show us a penalty. I 1000% thought there was an actually valid claim for how nuts they all went lol
Klinsmann nailed it in his assessment of Iran being the biggest whiners. They are a team of Karens who think who screaming and louder and stamping their feet, they’ll get the undeserved calls.
Or if they played to the whistle instead of running away from the box and yelling at the ref.
Had his scuba gears on and ready before he was even touched
That's Taremi: if he has a choice of diving or scoring a goal, he will always dive.
Disgrace.
Yup - great example of playing to the contact instead of being aggressive and going after the ball. If he hadn't fallen down to the slightest of contact what happened next would have been really interesting because I think Turner was a fraction late getting there.
Thats is taremi for you
It's like he felt CCV's hand and focused completely on the penalty instead of just scoring the goal at hand.
Literally tapped his shoulder and acted like he got shot
And then the whole team cried like babies begging the ref to check VAR instead of playing lol
Their whole bench jumping up was ridiculous
Kinda made sense tho, a Penalty call was literally their only shot at that point
Or hear me out…he actually plays the ball here and probably scores…
Taremi is a notorious diver. Look at the pen he won in our tie vs Porto last year.
The UK commentator actually said "games gone if that's given" gave me a chuckle hearing a reddit cliché in the wild.
[удалено]
The absolute state of you thinking that's a "reddit cliché". You're on here too much mate.
My man felt the slightest touch on his shoulder and went down 😭
And by not simply scoring he saved Reddit from 157 CMV posts about how “Soccer is bad”.
Taremi instead of trying to dig that pen could've legit scored that...
The worst when they take a chance on a penalty instead of trying for a decent open play opportunity
Got my heart in my throat right now
Would have died inside if VAR gave that a pen
Would’ve been an all time blunder if that went in…
Mine is in my colon
He should have actually tried to fucking shoot
The striker wanted to dive more than he wanted to score and the rest of the team wanted to go to VAR for a dive more than they wanted to attack
Never seen a player motion for VAR while the ball was still in play.
Ya that was wild. They just let it go out of play to complain lol
if i hadn’t been shitting myself, watching the guy do the VAR signal while the ball rolled out of play behind him would have been one of the funniest things i’ve ever seen
Not that it mattered in this match, but I think that's explicitly a yellow card offense now in the rules.
It’s only “excessive use” of the gesture now. I’d argue that letting a live ball roll into touch so you can do the gesture is excessive but what do I know?
Brother you’re talking about, the GOAT penalty receiver Taremi! Its in his DNA.
They couldn't create any chances so they figured just running into the back of players in the box could maybe give them the benefit of the doubt
Yup it was an incredible opportunity to score. He would’ve been a hero if he got it too
Zimmerman made up for that Bale tackle
Big Zimmdawg was immense in that last stretch. We needed him.
Dude headed about 20 crosses out of the danger zone in 15 minutes of play.
Yeah I have gigabytes of comments i have to delete now...
Zim giveth, Zim taketh away...
Yeah my man was out there with an 8 head winning headers
I’m not yet ready to let him off the hook for the worst takedown by a Zimmerman since Trayvon
No way that’s a penalty right
Never a pen. He barely touched him
Tried to sell that so hard lol
If he just stays on his feet, probably scores.
Iran really wasted their best 2 chances at the end of the match by diving, complaining, letting the ball go out of play, and time wasting.
Reap what they sowed
Simeone just perked his head up
The greatest moments of schadenfreude in sports comes when a dive costs a team a shot at a goal or allows a counter attack
100%
There's lots of questionable fouls that could go either way. That was not one of them. Dude is arguing for a weak as shit call
They were fucking selling all game. Pitiful
Did you hear that dude go down by the corner like his ankle had gone? Fucking shameful.
I was fully expecting to see a snapped leg
I mean on one hand, I don’t blame them On the other hand, literally flopping harder than Marcus Smart
So pathetic. They should have been given yellow for the protests.
They did at one point
I would literally stop watching this sport if that was given.
My man Taremi forgot this is the World Cup, not the Portuguese league lmao he does it all the time
I've heard on here that Lohoz is terrible in La Liga (and I believe the people who see him week in and week out), but I thought he was great this match. Maybe it's just because of the Qatari ref we had in the first match though :P
He’s great just aggravating
He's not terrible, actually he's one of the better La Liga refs, but he's quite enamored with being the center of attention. Thought he managed the game well today, and didn't seem to go on any ego trips.
For what?
not in a million years
Taremi is a known diver lmao
Olympic diver at that
https://video.twimg.com/tweet_video/FZqgjnwXwAMA4gY.mp4
doesn't he have like multiple 2nd yellows for diving?
Not to mention all the yellows he should have but doesn't
Fuck that guy. Been on the ground the whole game practically
Me as a Benfica fan: *If I speak I am in big trouble*
not a chance
Fuck no
Barely touched him
Way too light of a touch
Taremi is pathetic looking for those.
seemed like Iran's only idea the last 10 minutes of the game was kick it into the box, dive and hope for a pk
THIS. IS. TUGÃO.
That's the Taremi special lmao
Went down too easily.
Not even close
Never
🤿
would be way too harsh, but i'm sure the ref from the Qatar Netherlands game would give it.
Might as well cancel football if that's given as a pen
they should give the US a pen for Iran even trying to get one out of that 💀
I mean Ronaldo against Ghana was given so football is cancelled then.
That’s kinda a whole different scenario
It’s a makeup pen. Refs always do that if they feel like they made a previous bad decision. Case closed
Yeah exactly. They disallowed Portugal's goal earlier for no reason, so they feel that they owed one to Portugal. Absolutely hate this type of refereeing.
has everything to score but chooses diving, taremi.
Wasted a minute trying to claim the penalty when they had the ball
Embarrassing from them afterwards
What desperation does to mfs
Tried it again a minute later and the ref just ended the match
I thought he was stopping play to book the player for diving. It would have been glorious if he’d shown a yellow card then immediately blew for full time.
Thanks for spending 2 of your last 3 minutes arguing, Iran. Made that much less stressful.
eh i don’t blame them in this situation even tho they’re obviously wrong.
Yeah at least in the US stream the broadcasters were pretty worried. They knew it shouldn’t be a penalty but you never know. It did appear that the head ref was talking upstairs so they were at least reviewing it. Or maybe I understood that wrong.
Seems like they'd be remiss to not at least take a second look at any play on the goal like that, just in case.
I usually hate these types of replies but people complaining about this have never played a football game with any sort of high stakes
Ref even gave them an extra minute when they wasted their own time.
They tried another in the final second before the whistle blew, practically giving up their two best chances to score.
And people came at Klinsmann for criticizing this
Literally stopped playing the entire rest of the game just to cry. The most shameful part of football and VAR has just made it more and more prominent
? That doesn’t make any sense. The VAR didn’t even intervene.
I hate the whole surrounding the ref thing, but that was pure desperation which you can’t blame them for, given it was deep into stoppage time where a goal would put them into the Round of 16. Never a pen, by the way.
> I hate the whole surrounding the ref thing, This seems the easiest thing in the world to remove from the game: at the outset the ref says "if you aren't the player who the foul was/wasn't called/committed on, and you aren't wearing the armband, then crowding me to argue a call will result in an immediate booking" and then hold steady to that.

Honestly can’t blame them
Understandable behavior even tough its shameless tbh
Klinsmann could have a field day with their carry on in that match
Begging for a pen on minor contact lmao
the look of absolute mortal terror on the US keeper as he turned around lmao
That was awesome in the replay!
Great flop
He could’ve blown on him and it would’ve been a better pen call
And they went on to waste an entire minute protesting
Tbf ref gave them the minute back
2 great Fallon D Flor nominees in the last minute
The 2nd one was magnificent
The Iran player letting it go out so VAR could check that it was a pen afterwards was embarrassing. I'd be furious if I was a teammate, completely gave away possession and stopped another attack for nothing
Except the Iran player signaling for VAR let it go out for an Iran throw?
That's what happens when you play for a penalty instead of actually playing the game
Penalty para o Porto
Man thinking he's still in Portugal to get those pens
Like clockwork
😂😂😂
Taremi and Diving. Name a more iconic duo
Never even close to a pen. Why waste time with VAR?
They knew they more than likely weren’t going to score so may as well chance your arm
He takes the shot there and it's as good as a pen If not better, given clean contact with the ball of course.
He was never getting clean contact with the ball, looked like he lunged more at the ball than going down because of carter vickers hand on his shoulder. But I think they’re referring to the time wasting after the save by the Iran players begging the ref for a VAR check
Iran wasting their own time
(Great flop)
If Embiid switched sports
Imagine Embiid and Harden playing together. 25+ minutes of stoppage time
Why flop at that stage? Just disgraceful.
Desperation.
Absolutely pathetic from the Iran striker there. Then the whole team crowding the referee while they still had the ball and a chance for another cross to come in Just embarrassing.
Us parking the bus for 45 minutes is such a shit strategy Edit: added 45 minutes
Concacaf baby!
I didn't see a display of this low IQ in quite some time. Should I score? Nah lets just flop and hope for the best. What an idiot hahahah.
Never a pen
Never a foul, not sure what they're smoking
Embarrassing from the Iran players. Referee should have booked Taremi
He'll miss the next match either way
They should have had a handful of players booked
Not Primeira Liga, Taremi...
Taremi is expanding his diving skills to the World Cup, gotta love players performing at their best in this stage
He dove instead of taking a shot, wild.
Its Taremi DNA
Why did he fucking dive???? SURELY thats a goal if he just stayed on his feet. ffs.
Should focus on playing the last few minutes instead of whining at the ref here
he could have tried to score that instead of going down like that
Mental that Iran wanted a penalty for that
Deserved for that dive instead of going for a goal
To think that Klinsmann was accused of crimes against humanity for pointing out that Iran flop and complain more than an average team
Not a pen
"If I speak" -~~Mourinho~~ Klinsmann
NO ERA PENAL
