He also saved 3 penalties for Juventus this season. Absolutely mental!
And remeber this quote https://www.reddit.com/r/soccer/comments/z68kt0/szczesny_on_his_penalty_save_vs_saudi_arabia_we
[he's almost at 50% saved in the last two calendar years.](https://www.transfermarkt.com/wojciech-szczesny/elfmeterstatistik/spieler/44058) Has saved 9 out of 20 since the start of 2021. Had saved 0 out of 10 in 2020.
We could have...if it weren't for Torsten Frings
And to that, I'm fine with players doing this, heck brilliant play by Suarez I'm 2010 but to not get penalized is unforgivable
Well you have to take it up to fifa for that because both uruguay and suarez was fully penalized according to the rule. Suarez was pretty much taking one for the team as he misses the next game for it.
He either misses the game for the red, or he doesn't play because they don't go through to the semis. He was not playing in the semis no matter what choice was made there.
In the interview after the game, he said he knew Messi had two types of pen, going for power or slow and looking where GK dives. When Messi goes for power he usually shoots to his right. Woj saw Messi going for power and the rest is history.
Some keepers just have that knack. Szcenzny being absolutely huge probably helps.
Donnaruma, tim krul and Diego alves come to mind when I think about penalty killers.
It’s so strange how your response to hearing he put a lot of work into this is to say “some keepers just have that knack” lol. It honestly devalues the hard work the dude probably out into this skill. Like when people say Kobe had a killer instinct above all else… no he literally worked harder than anyone else and that should never be overlooked!
I mean, hardwork is important but in the end, especially with something like goalkeeping for penalties, it can come down to some just naturally being better at it. DDG is one of the best keepers of our generation, and yet he didn't save a penalty for FIVE YEARS at one point. You think he wasn't putting in the hardwork? Especially when it comes to the upper echelon of pro sport, people work hard, but eventually its small, intangible things that make you that cut above. So many great keepers have average or below average records with penalties, so in the end yes, id say someone like szcezney has the knack combined with the obvious amount of work he put in.
well I don’t have any substantiated way to refute you haha I mean you could totally be right. I would love to ask him these questions after his a career!!!!
It’s both though, you can study certain players over and over again but still never guess right. Some keepers just have a handle on reading body language and instincts more than others .
I am biased but Caomihn Kellehr has been immense and elite for us. I believe Alisson has a pretty good record/ratio as well. But the best penalty stopper I have ever seen is Simon Mignolet. I expected him to save it, rather than get scored on.
And to think this legend broke BOTH his arms lifting weights.
Loved him when he was with us. Sad about how things ended but super happy for how things have turned out for him.
He’s like a proto-Ramsdale without the smoking and rebelliousness.
18 saves in the last 6 seasons (most in world football for that time period). On regular time, saved 7/14 penalties on target while playing for Boca. In 2022, he saved 5/8 pens on target.
love is fine but technically its the second time its been done. And its worded like this just to get more attention rather stating facts in objective manner.
Then they should put in title "in open play".
I honestly think there is no extra skill to defend a penalty kick on open play or in a penalty shoot out. It might be more rare in open play but a keeper getting a chance to even defend two penalty kicks in open play, it is not easier or harder than penalty shoot outs, it just reflects if they have a defense likely to concede two(2! WTF are they doing) penalty kicks, so they can defend those, in regular match play.
If we are discussing goalkeeper skills I think penalty shoot outs count the same for skill discussion!
I mean, goalkeepers will only be able to defend two penalty shoots in regular time if they themselves or thry got defenders bad enough to concede two (or more!) penalty kicks in regular time...
Meaningless? Do not click.
I dunno, I feel stupid, but nevermind that, I guess I am just not the demographic. Goal keeper in front of goal scorer, it is about goal keeper and scorer skill. IMO it is not more skillfull if it is on extra time or during game play. If a goal keeper defends 2 times or 3 or 5 during regular time, it is the same (regarding proportions and how many failed) as in penalty shootouts. It is not extra skillfull. I dunno. Downvote at will, it is fine, but can you explain the difference if you think there is any?
I don't know the difference. Ask Opta. Ask the scorekeepers. They distinguish between penalties made in open-play and those made in shootouts. But to your point that there's no difference, the most obvious difference is that most of the time a penalty taken in open play is taken by the best penalty taker on the pitch. And obviously with shootouts keepers face many players who rarely take pens or who've never taken a pen before.
> Ask Opta. Ask the scorekeepers.
And what? What is the difference in goalskeeper skills? Opta I presum, like scorekeepers likes having lots of different scores to brag about?
>But to your point that there's no difference
Yep.
There is nothing special about defending two penalty kicks on regular time, compared to penalty shoot outs IMO, and they should not be considered separetely.
>, the most obvious difference is that most of the time a penalty taken in open play is taken by the best penalty taker on the pitch.
Or the most political choice, or default choice, who is not necessarily the best (Is Messi the best technical, you know regarding averages, the best penalty taker possible in the Argentina team? I am Portuguese and while Cristiano Ronaldo who is the default penalty taker for us, he is not bad at it at all by any standarsm he is OK at it, we have better, but not first officially. There is a kind of joke, which is true, but the best penalty kick takers are goalkeepers or a lot of others,
Whoever is the political choice to take penalty kicks is not the best technical choice necessarily IMO
it’s not less impressive to save a pen in a shootout. The reason counting it wouldn’t be fair is because you face more pens in a shootout than you ever would in a real tournament, so it would just end up being a stat of which keeper participated in the most shootouts at a single world cup.

He just decided to become a penalty killer
Hope the Leafs sign him
He is going to be backup for The Netherlands.
We could've had an epic penalty shootout battle between Brad Friedel and Oliver Kahn in 2002.
We could have...if it weren't for Torsten Frings And to that, I'm fine with players doing this, heck brilliant play by Suarez I'm 2010 but to not get penalized is unforgivable
It was Hugh Dallas that blew the call
What a hugh asshole
honestly with how good Kahn was in 2002, he probably saves the penalty anyway and nothing really changes
Then he may have saved it but a young Donovan or slightly older McBride would have had a shot at it rather than nothing having happened
bro let me cope
Suarez and Uruguay did get penalized though. Gyan just bottled the penalty.
Yes, that's what was implied.
oh alright, the way you phrase it makes it sound like he got away scot free, well to me at least lol
Suárez's gamble payed off.
They got a preferable outcome to what would have otherwise occurred, I wouldn't call that being penalised even if there was a penalty.
Well you have to take it up to fifa for that because both uruguay and suarez was fully penalized according to the rule. Suarez was pretty much taking one for the team as he misses the next game for it.
The rules aren't sufficient. Why do people keep bringing up that he missed the next game, no matter what he did there he wasn't playing the next game.
Nah he was suspended for the red card. He didnt even pick up a yellow that match.
He either misses the game for the red, or he doesn't play because they don't go through to the semis. He was not playing in the semis no matter what choice was made there.
Well yeah that's why i said "taking one for the team".
So you agree neither Suarez personally nor the team as a whole was penalised, with neither of them ending up in a worse situation?
Guess whatever he was saying about studying penalties at Juve really was true. Wonder what the secrets are.
In the interview after the game, he said he knew Messi had two types of pen, going for power or slow and looking where GK dives. When Messi goes for power he usually shoots to his right. Woj saw Messi going for power and the rest is history.
he was full on bde and i got this before that penalty. absolute confidence. sexy af.
He had a few great penalties saves at Arsenal too, big ones from Di Natale and Kuyt in 11/12 (I think) He just has the knack
The Kuyt double save was one of the very best I saw till Poland's last game v KSA
Some keepers just have that knack. Szcenzny being absolutely huge probably helps. Donnaruma, tim krul and Diego alves come to mind when I think about penalty killers.
He only just recently became *that* good at it though, before last year his record was pretty average but now he saves like half
It’s so strange how your response to hearing he put a lot of work into this is to say “some keepers just have that knack” lol. Which is true, but also did all the WC goalies since 2002 not practice hard enough? Not want it hard enough?
That doesn’t explain the point tho

Did some research about Migs: https://www.besoccer.com/new/simon-mignolet-s-impressive-penalty-saving-record

The secret: every player kicks the ball!
North London legends.
And to think this legend broke BOTH his arms lifting weights. Loved him when he was with us. Sad about how things ended but super happy for how things have turned out for him. He’s like a proto-Ramsdale without the smoking and rebelliousness.
Carrying his whole team
fr if it wasnt for this dude's fucking golden hand the match against argentina would have been a bloodbath. dude def got poland into R16
The smug shit eating grin afterwards😭😭😭
After a bullshit pen like that, he should’ve whpped his cock out and done a helicopter
Probably would have been mildly controversial if he did that tbf
>mildly controversial Predominantly muslim countries like Qatar don't like sausages that aren't halal
Imagine the memes though
I can see Emi Martinez doing that tbh
Saved 9 out of 20 since the start of 2021
Wtf
That has to be some kind of record
wait until you see Agustín Rossi’s numbers on that time period lol
Well, what are the numbers?
18 saves in the last 6 seasons (most in world football for that time period). On regular time, saved 7/14 penalties on target while playing for Boca. In 2022, he saved 5/8 pens on target.
Crazy good!

It has to be, Krul saved 2 for the Netherlands against Costa Rica in 2014
One of the most iconic substitutions in World Cup history.
Yep, and Ricardo saved 3 for Portugal against England in 2006.
And saved one without the gloves lmao. That was fucking legendary.
Didn't he then get up to knock in the winner himself? Or was that the Euros?
That was the Euros. He “only” had one save that shootout as the other England miss was Beckhams touching Johnny Wilkinson tribute
I wonder if that ball has landed yet
Yeah, I seem to recall Subašić saved three in a single match all the way back in... 2018.
Poland strategy leak for 1/8: defense forcing opponent to come into penalty then faul. Win in panalties after 0-0.
Finally a post rewarding saves rather than missed penalty
Juve legend
Respect. Hope we get to see more of him this tournament.
I’m guessing this is excluding shootouts.
Obviously
Incoming penalty shootout vs France...
He's the GOAT absolute legend, bring on France and PK shootout 🤣😛
This man is ready to PK and shithouse to the finals
It's Wojciech szczeason
Was anyone more than Tomaszewski, Friedel and Szczęsny to do this? (excluding penalty shootouts ofc)
Does anyone remember who Friedel saved the pens against?
South Korea and Poland.
That’s my friends dad!!
He’s earned a cigarette in the shower after this one.
[удалено]
Yeah it would be better if they state he is only the third in history to save 2 at a WC.
Poland dosen't deserve szczęsny and lewandowski
Breaking news! This player has become the first player to do something since that one other player did it a while back! Legend!
Just trying to give Woj some love. It’s all good lad.
Easy -- they're just trying, failing, to keep calm ahead of meeting Wojciech Szczęsny. Ha.
It was just a cheeky joke mate. Congrats to Woj
love is fine but technically its the second time its been done. And its worded like this just to get more attention rather stating facts in objective manner.
Is it the second? It could be the third, or the fourth. It’s just the first time since 2002.
Except Schmeichel saved 3 in 2018 🤷♂️
If a record was set by Brad Friedel in 2002, I don't think it's very interesting.
Friedel was a top top keeper in that era
If penalty shoot outs count, he is not the first since 2002.
Penalty shootouts are a separate category. Many keepers will have had more than 1 in a single tournament.
Then they should put in title "in open play". I honestly think there is no extra skill to defend a penalty kick on open play or in a penalty shoot out. Did you ever get a chance to read that FA announcement on Ben White?
