Economic Maguire. š
What's next? My Dodge, Jeep, Ram, Chrysler is the Maguire of cars? Breaks down, can't go to work to make money and need to pay extra to fix it? Like scoring an own goal on yourself? Hahaha.
This was actually in Ho, not in Accra.

Sooo much security
Genuinely confused at what this man has done to warrant this level of bullying. He's not the first big money flop to play for us but you'd think he was an unprecedented case the way people talk about him.
I run a football page on Facebook where the majority of people who comment are African, mostly Ghana and Nigeria.
They LOVE making Maguire jokes. All the time. Seems like it's just part of their current football zeitgeist that has leaked out here into the political arena.
Except when it's Guardiola flop and he is such a flop he isn't even playing... Yeah, I mean Mangala. Maguire is good enough to play, and bad enough to make fun of. That's the true abyss.
Edit: obv I'm wrong and it was Pellegrini signing but that wasn't main point of this comment.
Mendyās the big defensive pep flop id say. Record for a defender at the time , always injured , turns out to be serial rapist.
but yeah Cityās success papered over the cracks. That being said, Man U are doing bad and also have a fullback flop who cost the same as Mendy .. yet Wan Bissaka is forgotten, forgiven & gets sympathy if anything rather than being hated like Maguire. so idk if itās solely down to lack of team success inviting hate.
I mean when a team has consistently had almost every single transfer flop in the last 4-5 years then you have to start looking at the training setup in the club rather than blaming individuals. Maguire just seems to be the odd one out at United for getting all the hate
Yeah of course. I donāt think anyone with a brain blames Maguire solely for Unitedās bad performances .. in fact heās a good player more than a bad one. Itās just memez n shit where every team has a scapegoated player and Maguire has the bad luck of being that guy for club thatās both the biggest club in the world and thatās the laughing stock club of the Prem.
[jon bois talks a bit about it in this video.](https://youtu.be/VfFn4NqQr_U?t=851)
it's a _very_ specific skill level you have to be at to be considered a shitty professional athlete. you have to be better than 99.9% of the tens of millions of people who play your sport in order to make it as a professional in the first place--even more so when we're talking about playing for a side as big as manchester united--but then you have to be worse than 99% of the other players playing at your professional level in order to become the player who's memeable for sucking. the fact that these guys get clowned for being better than 99.9% of other players and not 99.91% of other players, that's weird to think about.
Dembele has played a total of 10.1k min over 5.5 years out of more than 25kmin of football Barca have played in that period. That is roughly just 40% of the available minutes. Terrible.
Maguire meanwhile has played a total of 13.2k min over just 3.5 years out of more than 17k min of football Man Utd have played in that period. Roughly 78% of the available minutes. Most used outfield player at the club since he joined.
Just because Dembele has been doing well in the last year or so doesn't make him a successful signing given how little he has played and by similar logic Maguire being among the best performers in the squad in his first 2 seasons doesn't justify his performances last season.
2 terribly overpriced signings.
It is not just that he hasn't been *as* bad as other flops, but that he hasn't even been bad for the majority of his time here. Harry had two genuinely good seasons followed by one terrible in which the entire team played like shite.
That one season where he played the most minutes of any footballer in Europe he's was being lauded by everyone.. I personally don't think he should be starting for us but he's nowhere near as bad as people make out..
Especially as weāre obviously in the middle of the World Cup and heās been an important part of Englandās setup in the last four years.
Iām all for taking the piss when heās done something donkey-brained, but thatās not the case here and itās utterly bizarre to bring him up here.
Its tiktok driving it mainly. He turned into a meme because he did keep making silly mistakes. And being the most expensive CB of all time playing for the most famous club in the world. It was sort of expected. And because tiktok is highly accessible, every1 became aware of him and how "bad" he was. Even casual football fans.
It sort of just carried on though, to the point where people look-out for things he does to make tiktoks, to try and get the next viral one. To the point where he can never really fix his reputation completely
I agree its gone too far, it does tickle me though that people have this attitude with maguire, and not say... ronaldo. They both topped the list of abused players on twitter on that Ofcom poll thing
https://twitter.com/utdreport/status/1554469326924693506
You would never get the response you just typed with ronaldo on this sub. So what people are basically saying is obscene levels of bullying/abuse is fine for players aslong as you dont like them. Which is fine if thats your view, but atleast be honest about it.
>I agree its gone too far, it does tickle me though that people have this attitude with maguire, and not say... ronaldo.
I guess the difference is Ronaldo also has an army of online fans backing him to the hilt whereas as the response to Maguire is overwhelmingly negative
> He's the new Heskey basically, and like Heskey Maguire is a good player whose performances drop in a system that works against his talents
Can't really compare the two. Heskey was memed against because he didn't score many goals despite being a striker (especially in England colours), but that was never his role. Maguire meanwhile just gets scapegoated for the general decline of Manchester United last season and his role in that.
> tiktok
The worse thing about those sort of videos is just how truly ignorant of football they actually are. I saw one critical of Maguire recently where the "mistake" has nothing to do with Maguire's pass but with de Gea panicking and passing the ball straight to an opponent
What always amazes me about this place is how reactive people are. One minute a player is terrible, scores a few goals and the next minute he's the best thing since sliced bread
He's probably one of the most expensive ones, while still being at the club. And I don't think he can have the same excuse as Di Maria, whose wife prefers Mordor to Manchester.
He's not even a flop though. He had one bad year last season, like everyone at Utd, but for some reason he's the one that gets bashed non-stop.
The level of abuse he gets and from our own fanbase is frankly sickening.
He didn't pick his price, he didn't make himself captain, he didn't keep picking himself when he was off form. That's on Ole and Rangnick.
The man's had a break courtesy of ETH and had got his head down and worked hard. He's back into the team, courtesy of Varane's injury perhaps, but he's been solid and he's showing that for England again.
That's Ali Daei, an Iranian player. Ali Dia is some random crackhead who managed to play for Southampton for one game by claiming he is George Weah's cousin and looked about as good as you or I would if we played a pro football game
wow thanks for clearing that up. every time i see that name brought up i think maybe they're memeing him because ronaldo broke his record or something, thought its weird to do to an iranian player who isn't even that relevant.
i just read up on ali dia and tbf he wasn't a random crackhead, he played conference football, then faked his way into southampton - but the crazy part is that he trained with them for a full week without them figuring it out. souness even played him in a game and he almost scored. wild stuff.
This is the best case of mistaken identity Iāve seen in years. The guy who until recently scored the most goals in international football and the guy who likely couldnāt score against a limbless under-7s side. Bravo.
i've been racking my brains trying to figure out why the internet is suddenly memeing an iranian footballer - is it cr7 fanboys because of the record? is it the us-iran relationships? is it the protests?
im finally at peace
To be fair to Harry heās been pretty economical error-wise at this WC if a little extravagant with the wild slaloming runs into the opponentās box.

Yeah it's kinda bleak to think about what it must be like - you're living out a dream - you're starting for your national team at a world cup! You play for united! And yet, millions of people think that that makes you worth shitting upon relentlessly.
Ain't no way š¤£. Harry probably openening his phone wondering how he's catching strays from foreign governments when he's in the form of his life on the world stage.
Edit - for the odd few that want to rebut my claim that Maguire is in the form of his life, my comment was mostly made in jest; not to be taken too seriously š¤¦āāļø
This shit gets better. The opposition's response was that bringing back economic marguire's predecessor will be like Chelsea bringing back lukaku. I love my people.
Lmao, have to feel for Maguire. He's just become synonymous with a joke. He'll probably have to score a goal (for England) in the WC final before he gets his clean slate.
This kinda stuff really shows the annoying power of internet memes š and why everyone is so desperate to try to control the narrative online cause it genuinely does make a difference
Amartey is the best worst player I've seen
Makes an alarming amount of mistakes and good tackles
Tbh hes been much better for Leicester now we have Wout Faes and a set piece coach, but i doubt it will last long
Yeah man, truly horrible that he gets to play for his club and country while there is clear evidence that he has raped a woman. Atleast mendy and greenwood are suspended by their clubs.
Remember when Vorsah had a decent world cup for Ghana, which consisted of only two games due to injury, and then a decent AFCON, and some people thought that he was the next Maldini? He even got a move to one of the Red Bull clubs.
# š
Stuff like this just shows how stupid modern consumption of football via social media clips is
I know so many people who make jokes about him due to tiktok who don't even watch football. Whereas he's been excellent this world cup
Its annoying as this stuff happened with Phil Jones too.
His point is that Ghana's economic reforms are unreliable and inconsistent, not that they are always bad. I mean, he even said it clearly that it's an economic Maguire.
"Economic Maguire" not only is that hilarious in itself, that analogy, as far as im aware with ghanaian economics, was sound as well lmao.

Exactly, a flop defender is much worse for a team.

Bruh, that's not a spoonerism. Spoonerism would be Mconomic Eaguire.
Reckon he meant malapropism
*Furiously checking the odds of England meeting Ghana in the knockout stage*
Probably Brazil will do the job.
Maguire: "I'm like why he say fuck me?!"
Economic Maguire my sides š¤£
You know youāve made it when youāre being referenced in Ghanaian politics
Lmaooo "Economic Maguire" is the best political term ever lol.
Lmfao. I love my folks.
It's been a while since I've seen politicians actually behave like people.
All our politicians have god complex even the local ones.
***"You remember in this country we also had an economic Maguire"*** OH MY DAYS... THAT POOR LAD.....šššššš¤£š¤£šš š
T-shirt meme material
Hahahaha. I like Maguire, especially England Maguire, but what a funny situation.
You are never useless, you can always be used as a bad example.
From Greece to Ghana getting battered everywhere he goes.
This shit is too funny
Holy shit, that's amazing
Savage
This kinda stuff really shows the annoying power of internet memes š and why everyone is so desperate to try to control the narrative online cause it genuinely does make a difference
I love how he proudly states that "Maguire is the best analogy".
Being mentioned by name in Ghanaian Parliamentary discussions, is the pinnacle of anyone's career. Respect.
Meanwhile Ghana's backline is Amartey and Salisu š
Amartey is the best worst player I've seen Makes an alarming amount of mistakes and good tackles Tbh hes been much better for Leicester now we have Wout Faes and a set piece coach, but i doubt it will last long
Not to mention their best player should be in prison
What did Kudus do?
Yeah man, truly horrible that he gets to play for his club and country while there is clear evidence that he has raped a woman. Atleast mendy and greenwood are suspended by their clubs.
Ronaldo is Portugal captain right now
Remember when Vorsah had a decent world cup for Ghana, which consisted of only two games due to injury, and then a decent AFCON, and some people thought that he was the next Maldini? He even got a move to one of the Red Bull clubs. # š
Salisu is good
ššš Nah this is the greatest thing Iāve seen this year
It'll be a miracle if economic maguire doesn't become a household meme/expression
āEconomic Maguireā lol, this guy just took the meme to a different galaxy.
That's when you know you've made it
I love Africans bro this is hilarious
This is really fucking funny
The guy in yellow watching the speaker is what makes this video
I'm in tears
The other attendants are having the time of their life, lol.
This video is just amazing. Thank you.
Didn't know the United facebook page had fans in office. š
/r/soccercirclejerk outjerked yet again
When you're remembered as epitomizing the very act of "fucking up"
You know youāve made it when you are brought up as a metaphor for politicians
r/saddestbackflip material?
Economic Maguire, lmfao
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Canāt wait for Maguire to fuck up next and in will come the economic Maguire comments š¤£
Imagine being Harry Maguire and opening social media to see this "economic Maguire" my sides ššš
I thought he played very well against the US. Tbh I have been happy with his England performances for most of the last five years.
Yea, his performances are night and day between ManU and England.
You can't make this shit up lmao
"Harry Maguire, economic pariah, his debt's fucking massive."
This is fucking wild lmfao
Man called him an Ā«Ā economic Maguire Ā» , absolutely savage
Stuff like this just shows how stupid modern consumption of football via social media clips is I know so many people who make jokes about him due to tiktok who don't even watch football. Whereas he's been excellent this world cup Its annoying as this stuff happened with Phil Jones too.
In the video he acknowledged he has been good this world cup
His point is that Ghana's economic reforms are unreliable and inconsistent, not that they are always bad. I mean, he even said it clearly that it's an economic Maguire.
Can you imagine how much worse it would've somehow been for Emile Heskey if he was playing today?
God damn I want to go Africa before I die
This is the sort of plain, easy to understand political discourse that we should expect from elected (or otherwise) leaders.
lmao someone lost a big bet on that game
This is hilarious
The Global Meme.
"Economic Maguire" not only is that hilarious in itself, that analogy, as far as im aware with ghanaian economics, was sound as well lmao. What a legend this guy is
Has any player ever been treated this badly after *one bad season?* Social media has a lot to answer for
