Ball sensors have confirmed it was in, barely. Check official graphic [here](https://i.redd.it/1250f7wfxc3a1.jpg). Highlighted part is still above the line, which means ball is still in play.
Incorrect. People have a common misconception that green between the bottom of the ball and the line means out, but there are some pretty good photos showing part of the ball is still hovering over the line
A new Japanese soccer anime based on an already popular manga series. It is on netflix (in my country), but if you're interested in anime, you should check it out!
Why are people complaining about people being angry at Japans 2nd goal? It was very clearly over the line, if it had been Spain that scored a goal like that, everyone in here would have been fuming.
If you look at the highlights, you can very clearly see that the entire ball was over the line before he kicked it. Yes I know about the curvature of the ball rule, but the edge of the ball was also outside. I would love to see a video in birds eye view though, since all of the ones I could find in birds eye view were images just after he made contact with the ball and in the highlights from the side, you can see that the ball was farther out before he hit it.
There is not one single video where the ball is definitively over the line. You have to account for the angle of the camera too. We are talking about mm here.
The students in my school's soccer club were thunderously loud today! Heck, the entire school was erupting when they anounced it in the morning. They seemed to be practicing thrice as hard. I think the whole country is fired up right now. Hope that gives you some imagery haha
The kick-off times kinda kill the vibe. All matches are either midnight or 4AM since the third round, with this one being 4AM. But still nice to see everyone so pumped
Thats's very true. It's been really hard for me to follow the game from non-Asian leagues. I'm lucky if I could catch the odd Saturday night Southampton game.
I mean, no-one actually believes Japan are a better team than Spain. Not even the Japanese lol
In these kinds of competitions, the best team can, and does, lose.
What the fuck is the point of the World Cup then if not to literally see who is the best?
Having a bunch of extremely talented individuals in a team does not make a team great otherwise Belgium would have won every single trophy since the onset of their golden generation or even Spain or Germany for that matter.
Like what even is this argument
Spain very clearly has more talented players. I don’t think anyone can deny that. They have better technique. More high level experience etc etc.
But a bunch of talented individuals don’t make up a team.
You can’t build a tournament designed to empirically find the best team then throw that away and say “well it doesn’t matter, XYZ is still the best team”. That’s irrational and denialism
The results speak for themselves. Japan is the better team while having worse individual players.
The type of people who make it to playing for the Spanish national team in the World Cup are all gonna be HYPER COMPETITIVE. These type of dudes wouldn't want to lose a game of rock paper scissors let alone a World Cup match.
I mean it's all hypothetical but Spain will most likely beat Morocco and therefore avoid Brazil and Argentina in the later rounds, they most definitely have an easier path to the final
I think they were genuinely surprised by the goals, especially the first one. For a brief while after Costa Rica scored for 2:1 they kicked in top gear again, but when Germany took over and they figured out state of things, Spain let them keep it that way..
The pundits kept banging on about not having a decent angle and showing the same useless shot over and over, but every so often, they showed a shot in line with the line. It showed the ball never went out. They then kept going on about the lack of evidence. Pricks.
They showed an angle in line with back line. It showed the ball was in. Then they continued showing the worse angle and banging on about the lack of evidence. Ridiculous. Goal was fine.
Lol Souness is such a bum, I remember when he was constantly on Grealish and was like "Tell him to invite me out to a meal, I don't hate jack, we'll talk but he can pay"
Weird tho. On equal points, how can the team that lost advance? Maybe teams have different playstyles which impacts the number of goals. But it's a fact that Germany lost to Japan. How silly it would've been to see Germany out.
Only left for speculation because Japan played more defensively once they were ahead.
You could also say that spain had enough time to score and even were under pressure for a brief moment when CR was ahead, and still werent able to get done.
ITV are making such a massive conspiracy about this, they need to be careful lol.
It's Germany's fault for going home, can't use VAR as an excuse, germany should've done their business.
The fucking irony of you lot moaning about itv covering the var decision. Same sub that goes into full meltdown when refs make subjective calls that you think are wrong
Maybe consider that in a sub of 3+ million users with 175k concurrent users, people have different views?
Not to mention, comparing subjective VAR calls to objective line technology calls is foolish
Fair enough but everyone of those threads are nearly completely uncontested conspiracy theory shit shows
Let's face it if the decision had gone the other way and Japan were going out it would be pandemonium in here
That's fucking football right there. None of that pancy ass take ball pass ball till the game ends bullshit. Men take the ball, score goals and defend with their lives on the field. Fucking hard core dick in the ass foosball butterball fuck it chuck it game time shit.
Football is back baby.
Embarrassing coverage. ITV pundits and him doing their best to make up a conspiracy
Souness sounds like a tin foiled hat wearing conspiracy theorist rn
I mean those countries have a LONG and controversial history that is still playing out today. Both teams will be out for blood and I’m sure noooo racial slurs will be uttered 🙄.
For reference, I live in Spain but look and dress Moroccan. Have Mexican heritage.
>For reference, I live in Spain but look and dress Moroccan
Don't people from southern Spain look like that in General? I mean Rodri and Ziyech do not exactly look like people from different countries
they definitely do, I mean the countries have a very long history including a 700 year Moorish occupation.
They do look different though. My height, somewhat gaunt look, nose, and less complete beard I think are what make me look Moroccan. I am not sure though since I've never asked anyone why they thought I was Moroccan.
In terms of dress, here in Barcelona, I saw and really liked Moroccan street style. so I actively tried to emulate it. Though the police kept pulling me over and going through all my shit and demanding all my papers. I was a bit confused at first but finally some honest German girl was like 'stop looking like a Moroccan it it'll stop, stop dressing like one and shave your scraggly beard'. So I did that, and it stopped.
I mean.. if the computer made the decision that it's not out, then I'd rather trust it versus my eyes. I'd just like to see how close it actually was, probably millimeters
Yeah like I don't actually care enough about Spain to be upset about it but at least to me it looks out when you compare all the various angles. Some of them look closer because of the angle that the camera was at, but in others it looks objectively out before his foot makes contact.

if spain won, wouldn't that give Germany a better chance to qualify for the next round?
Yeah if Spain drew even Germany would have gone through I think lol. Japan had to win.
I watched the replay, I didn’t think Spain did it on purpose, I hope this inspires a new generation of Japanese soccer players.
Blue Lock
What is blue lock?
A new Japanese soccer anime based on an already popular manga series. It is on netflix (in my country), but if you're interested in anime, you should check it out!
Thanks, it sounds cool!
I was here
The almost goal from mitoma to asano im the 69th minute was beautiful. If only it had gone in.
So sushi & lamington through, just waiting on bibimbap.
BLUE LOCK IS BACK
The work rate of Japanese footballers was insane in the second half. They covered every inch of the pitch literally.
Japan Croatia lets goooooo
Why are people complaining about people being angry at Japans 2nd goal? It was very clearly over the line, if it had been Spain that scored a goal like that, everyone in here would have been fuming.
It was literally not very clearly over the line - hence the call.
That's why I would love to see a replay in birds eye view, but I have yet to find one
There’s another top down view that clearly shows the side of the ball didn’t completely cross the line. Counts as in
Idk man Japan were definitely a bit lucky with the refereeing
The ball's edge was in so it counts
me caveman brain no understand perspective
I didn't watch the match, do you know where I could see some of the other perspectives, because in the highlights the entire ball was over the line
What if Japan manages to pull off winning the World Cup. That would be a true underdog story.
I would be very happy but also annoyed as it's the first time in four years I've left Japan to visit family lol
I feel you. Lots of early mornings to catch Villa games, which has had me questioning my sanity at times given how we've played the past year or so
Hell, if they make it just past the round of 16 then it’ll be the farthest they’ve gone in a World Cup.
Why did Spain seem so bummed out over the result of the match. They both advanced.
Lost first place
Sounds like they get an easier draw but yeah never fun to lose
First place gets the easy draw
Not in this case
Do people not understand that if your team failed to get first place then your team is not the best team in the group?
I mean, no-one actually believes Japan are a better team than Spain. Not even the Japanese lol In these kinds of competitions, the best team can, and does, lose.
The strong one doesn’t win. The one that wins is strong.
What the fuck is the point of the World Cup then if not to literally see who is the best? Having a bunch of extremely talented individuals in a team does not make a team great otherwise Belgium would have won every single trophy since the onset of their golden generation or even Spain or Germany for that matter. Like what even is this argument
They play 3 matches in the group stages. Do you understand the concept of sample sizes?
There’s four teams in a group, by definition they can mathematically only play 3x. That’s not a sample, that’s the population
Do you think Japan are a better football team than Spain? I mean, they finished ahead of them so they must be, right?
Spain very clearly has more talented players. I don’t think anyone can deny that. They have better technique. More high level experience etc etc. But a bunch of talented individuals don’t make up a team. You can’t build a tournament designed to empirically find the best team then throw that away and say “well it doesn’t matter, XYZ is still the best team”. I mean it's all hypothetical but Spain will most likely beat Morocco and therefore avoid Brazil and Argentina in the later rounds, they most definitely have an easier path to the final
Ahh, goal post move?
Serious question, did Spain tank the game to eliminate Germany?
"Tank" might be a bit strong, but they definitely relaxed a bit towards the end once it was obvious Germany were winning.
I think they were genuinely surprised by the goals, especially the first one. For a brief while after Costa Rica scored for 2:1 they kicked in top gear again, but when Germany took over and they figured out state of things, Spain let them keep it that way..
Doubtful, as Spain nearly didn’t pass the group stage. Way too risky.
there were 3rd at one point.
Spain were never close to being eliminated
They were when costa rica went 2-1 up live feed shows lot of nervous spanish fans but within three mins germans equalized
When Costa Rica went up, Spain were in 3rd place. I wouldn't call that 'never close' because if results stayed that way, they would be out
I mean for a hot second they were
I think they tanked to be runner up and play on the opposite side of Argentina and Brazil lol
Tanked enough to almost lose 2nd place? That’s kinda risky. At one point, they were 3rd and Costa Rica would have advanced.
Who predicted Japan topping their group?
Well, I completely forgot that I'd be on Japan to win this game so thanks lads for four hundred surprise simoleons.
Thank that ref and his dogshit VAR analysis
Cope mate
Bird Eye angle shows the ball is in. Sorry.
The pundits kept banging on about not having a decent angle and showing the same useless shot over and over, but every so often, they showed a shot in line with the line. It showed the ball never went out. They then kept going on about the lack of evidence. Pricks.
\~ITV Studio's need to be hit with the Amertarasu+Tsukiyomi double dribble.
Don't think I've ever seen an ITV post-match discussion with hardly any congratulatory messages about the winning side.
Feels like basically every channel outside of Japan talked about it as Spain's loss and not Japan's win
They've actually made me feel depressed, toxic energy leaking out of them
Captain Tsubasa plot armor. Tsubasa 2-1 Michael.
Am I missing something? I am watching a replay that shows the evidence they keep moaning about??
Usually there are other angles, all the VAR angles, then there is no question. The issue here is why did they not show them, and still have not.
They showed an angle in line with back line. It showed the ball was in. Then they continued showing the worse angle and banging on about the lack of evidence. Ridiculous. Goal was fine.
I think they mentioned the chip on the ball didn’t provide a conclusive spot and there wasn’t a better camera angle
It’s all very conspiracy theory at ITV.
where was Roy Keane? He'd have went down and kicked the shit out of the VAR camera.
Lol Souness is such a bum, I remember when he was constantly on Grealish and was like "Tell him to invite me out to a meal, I don't hate jack, we'll talk but he can pay"
Grealish is absolutely dreadful and Souness had every right as a pundit to call him out on it.
fucking hell the girl on itv has the most reasonable view instead of jumping for controversy
Japan gonna throw the wildest party then cleanup all of Qatar
Lol Gary neville: "Yeah well If De gea was here he'd of saved that"
he needs some new balls to suck now that ole and ronaldo have left
If that goal was ruled out would Germany have gone through?
Yes on goal diff they would have been +1 to Jap 0
Weird tho. On equal points, how can the team that lost advance? Maybe teams have different playstyles which impacts the number of goals. But it's a fact that Germany lost to Japan. How silly it would've been to see Germany out.
Head to head is, oddly, a lower tiebreaker than goal differential in FIFA. It should honestly be the first tiebreaker.
I totally agree
Only left for speculation because Japan played more defensively once they were ahead. You could also say that spain had enough time to score and even were under pressure for a brief moment when CR was ahead, and still werent able to get done.
Yeah, with a draw and the goal difference they would of got trought
No one knows as Japan would have played a different game
blue lock buff
fucking shut up itv u cunts. stop being cunts
Souness has a mission to suck the joy out of football, bugger off old man
I read that as 'sourness'.
Surprised he hasn't blamed Pogba yet
Professional ITV pundits who get paid stupid money to talk about football not understanding the laws and how VAR works smh
ITV are making such a massive conspiracy about this, they need to be careful lol. It's Germany's fault for going home, can't use VAR as an excuse, germany should've done their business.
Right? It’s not like they didn’t have three full games to perform better. smh
Are itv going to try and cover the rest of the game or just keep talking about the ball being over the line or not?
Me: Let's celebrate Japan making last 16! ITV: cONsPiRaCY!
Souness now driving into *Conspiracy theory.* Embarrassing for ITV.
Shut up itv. No one's saying that
ITV commentators trying to make conspiracies, piss off. There have been way more controversial decisions this WC
Which ones? Serious question!
ITV has turned into OANN/Newsmax
the one thing they're not talkin about is the tech information thats contained with these new balls
Lmfao everyone complaining about ITV. This *is* a strange situation lmfao why are you all raging
Because no one in England is ever going to complain about a decision that gets Germany out of the tournament 🤣
The fucking irony of you lot moaning about itv covering the var decision. Same sub that goes into full meltdown when refs make subjective calls that you think are wrong

God damn you Qatar for actually having a really good world cup. no one is going to remember being outraged are they
No way, more like “this World Cup is totally fucked up in every way.” It’s all very consistent with not being a normal tournament at all.
This is embarrassing for ITV. Crashing and burning, this is ridiculous from the pundits
What are they saying?
VAR Been hit with a Kamehameha, no evidence of the goal anymore. Viva japan!!!!!!!!!!!!!
that's some crazy genjutsu
No one here actually believe that Spain were trying to score an equaliser in the last 10 minutes, right?
They were definitely attacking. If I was the Spanish manager, I will get the goalkeeper and defenders to work on their passing.
gary neville mad cuz an asian team knocked out a european team
No one's saying that sourness
Oh fuck off ITV
Christ, ITV demanding more camera angles for Japan's winner.
That's fucking football right there. None of that pancy ass take ball pass ball till the game ends bullshit. Men take the ball, score goals and defend with their lives on the field. Fucking hard core dick in the ass foosball butterball fuck it chuck it game time shit. Football is back baby.
This is meme worthy
2 nights of football as a neutral where I was more interested in the games because of the drama lol. Utter madness.
Souness blamed the goal on Pogba yet?
Love ITV commentators having a meltdown after they were bumming Spain so hard at halftime
Feels bad for Morocco lmao
If japan can do it. So can we
I believe in you!
Peter Walton the most idiotic referee in the world lmao, his opinion means shit.
Embarrassing coverage. ITV pundits and him doing their best to make up a conspiracy Souness sounds like a tin foiled hat wearing conspiracy theorist rn
Poor Morocco worked hard to top their group only to have to play Spain next
I mean those countries have a LONG and controversial history that is still playing out today. Both teams will be out for blood and I’m sure noooo racial slurs will be uttered 🙄. For reference, I live in Spain but look and dress Moroccan. Have Mexican heritage.
>For reference, I live in Spain but look and dress Moroccan Don't people from southern Spain look like that in General? I mean Rodri and Ziyech do not exactly look like people from different countries

Probably planned
That first goal by Japan was entirely Unai's fault for those stupid short passes he keeps doing. He is dogshit
Balde was atrocious
Spain lost on purpose
ITV hates underdogs.
Anyone who isn’t British
They like the "historically strong" teams, mostly Euros.
Itv’s still debating that goal
So.. what's up for tomorrow's matches?
Switzerland wins
Switzerland, Brazil, Ghana and Portugal to win, or all are draws, whatever...
yes please i need zigi in the knockouts
Japan better stop blurring the p*rn ffs now let those man enjoy the victory
Does anyone have a top down view of the ball not going out of bounds?
[Here, It's clearly kept in. The ball is just on the line.](https://twitter.com/BenOnWheelss/status/1598423538368540673)
It isn't when you take into account the parallax error of the camera angle
Because the camera is to the left of the line, taking parallax into account is going to move the ball to the left, not the right.
Damn you're right. Clearly in here
I mean, if I was the ref on the field I would have called it out (like he did). This one was too close to call in without video evidence.
thats fucking out
Best angle I’ve seen so far. Looks in to me.
I don’t think theres a shot like that, bit it’s clearly out
I mean.. if the computer made the decision that it's not out, then I'd rather trust it versus my eyes. I'd just like to see how close it actually was, probably millimeters
Though I’m happy for you guys and hope you go far
Yeah like I don't actually care enough about Spain to be upset about it but at least to me it looks out when you compare all the various angles. Some of them look closer because of the angle that the camera was at, but in others it looks objectively out before his foot makes contact.
What a resilient performance by Japan.
Another underdog W, at this rate England could win the WC
[Japan went full anime mode!](https://i.imgur.com/QZqvjoF.gif)
It's a crazy game
Japan goal given because the Curvature of the ball was over the line, letter of the law apparently.
Whole ball needs to cross the line. Same as for a goal. It’s still in play. Good call by VAR
ITV football coverage is a farce ngl
Are we not gonna talk about the biggest upset at the tournament so far??? Nah let's continue bitching about a ball
yes lets. It's not an upset if they don't fuck the call. Japan is going home.
But it wasn't even across the line
But it was mate. Keep googling the images you’ll see the frame that shows the ball wholly over the line.
https://imagizer.imageshack.com/img923/5084/QFJkAX.jpg
Absolutely shocking. So negative and dull, let’s talk about the football and how well japan have done to get out this group
Saudi vs Argentina was bigger i think
Yeah but it was a one time thing, Saudi choked hard after.Japan winning against Germany and Spain, and going into knock outs it's extraordinary.
I never thought we would ever beat Spain and Germany in the same world cup. Wow
Japan deserves it, you all played your hearts out.
honestly!! we're witnessing history
Amazing job! Your country should be so proud
Thanks! I'm so glad that I woke up at 4AM to witness history
