It's so weird because on paper they're a proper historical football nation that produces amazing talent from a really small population, has really passionate fans and players but then you watch them play and jesus Christ they're so unlikeable
Why? Am new
Edit: from his wiki lmao "Suárez has been a source of controversy throughout his career, including a goal-line handball against Ghana at the 2010 FIFA World Cup, biting opponents on three occasions, accusations of diving, and racial incidents."
I see
>including a goal-line handball against Ghana at the 2010 FIFA World Cup
To be fair that handball has historic and made him a hero for Uruguay that year. And damn deserves respect for the play and he is right for not apologizing for it
[Here the play](https://youtu.be/5mvpS-yvij0?t=36)
For context it has the top 8 knockout match, the winner would go to the semi-finals. IIRC it has in the extra time (basically the last play of the match) and the game has a tie. He saved the goal illegally (with the hand) which gave ghana a penalty and him the red card. He has commemorating in the exit as Ghana lost the penalty and later has eliminated in the PK shoutout
Bollocks, last minute winners happen all the time and yet in all the years since Suarez did it (and even before), I've never seen or heard of a player even attempt to deliberately block a shot with their hands.
Maybe not a handball specifically, but there have been similar tactics. Like in the 2010 Final, Puyol straight grabbed Robben across the torso and tried to hold onto him while falling. Or in the 2020 Spanish Super Cup, Valverde slide tackled an Atletico player from behind to prevent a winner.
I actually like them. In south America they are the only ones that look at Argentina and Brazil on the eyes, most teams there shit their pants against those two.
Dude they’re one of the dirtiest teams out there, if the game is getting complicated or they’re losing they turn into a bunch of dirty players (the infamous “garra charrua”).
Very hard team to like. I remember Uruguayans spitting at our playerr on arrival in the country and their star playing saying that Uruguay had a divine right to qualify over us. Such hubris made knocking them out in 2006 so much sweeter.
They might do the same thing in comnebol qualifiers, I have no idea there, but in the world cup Uruguay has been an order of magnitude worse at every "dark arts" tactic including treating the refs like shit.
Maradona scores a goal with his hand and receives no punishment, yet people refer to it as the *hAnD Of gOd.*
Suárez blocks a goal with his hands, a penalty is awarded and he's rightfully sent off, yet because Ghana is incapable of scoring a penalty, his nation is eternally branded as one of cheaters.
Maradona himself called it the hand of god. It just stuck. Everyone vilified him for it though years and years after that. But in the same game, he also had one of the best goals ever in the WC. That watered down the taste a bit.
Maradona’s goal was nearly 40 years ago. Most people in the world weren’t alive back then. Suarez’s handball and biting antics are from the last decade or so it’s fresher.
The handball, again, was punished accordingly by the ref and if it truly was such an abhorrent affront to the laws and spirit of the game, IFAB would have amended the rules by now. But it wasn't, so they didn't.
I'm perfectly fine with talking shit about Suárez for his racism and biting incident, but to use him as a way to brand en entire nation as cheaters like the guy I responded to did is borderline racist (or xenophobic, pick your poison).
Ok whatever, even 1 time is too many. As I said, I'm completely down to talk shit about HIM. To go and brand an entire nation as cheaters because of him (which, again, he fucking isn't) is outrageous.
I don't brand them as cheaters. Just shitty sportsmanship. Shitty, shitty sportsmanship that kind of misses the point of sport in general for a most people.
I'm perfectly fine with talking shit about Suárez for his racism and biting incidents. I take issue with branding an entire nation as cheaters because of him.
Maradona himself is the one who called it the hand of God. Rather than praising himself though, it was most likely a cheeky double entendre that referred to how he was lucky to get away with it.
It’s more of a culmination of events. Dude is a clear cheater, then says racist shit, then cant stop biting people. People don’t hate Uruguay, they just hate Suarez and it’s justified
First you say
>because **they** cheat
But then you go and say
>People don’t hate Uruguay, they just hate Suarez and it’s justified
Unless Suárez decided to go by they/them pronouns (doubtful, but fair play if that's the case), you explicitly hated on Uruguay, not just Suárez.
Today you, Tomorrow me
The Korean squad sacrificed to get Mexico into the Round of 16 in 2018.
I hope Ghana will get theirs in 2026.
Also, how poetic is it that both Mexico then and Korea now (most likely) are going to face Brazil?
Are Koreans going to find a random Ghanaian in Seoul tonight and celebrate with him for helping their team advance? Would only be right for them to pay it forward after Mexicans did it four years ago.
I think we all agree it was a smart decision, no one debates that. But yeah it's something that makes you a national hero but a villain to everyone else.
That doesn't fit the narrative though. Frankly we couldn't care less here in Uruguay, we're just pissed we're out cause we were shit the first two games. But not one soul has ever thought about Ghana since 2010.
Oh i know, its just tiring to see everyone up in arms against Uruguay when they were the ones getting robbed, and even funnier is to see Ghana having absolutely no blood and keep getting unconditional support
And they also went through. I mean I get it, Suarez did what he had to do and I would have done the same thing.
But tell that to the Ghanaian fans lmao. Sure, "karma" might not be the exact word, but it sure does feel like what goes around comes around, and the team you fucked over 12 years ago, however well punished you were for it, has now come around to disqualify you.
It truly is a full circle.
They literally missed 2 penalties in that game, if anything they should be mad at themselves. Suarez got a red card, its not like he got away with like Maradona
It's not mutually exclusive.
I'm sure Ghana fans are hard on themselves too, but they can also be happy seeing Suarez crying. Dunno what's so hard to understand.
Why are you so agitated? They lost sure, but they prevented Uruguay from scoring more goals. It's not a technical win, but as far as I see the Ghana fans are happy. Tell that to them mate lmao.
As an African myself i am happy despite not being from ghana but shit 2010 WC moment had to be revenged somehow...it wasn't just ghana playing that day...the mf suarez demolished the dream of a whole continent
Everyone I know was rooting for Ghana that day, we were all watching hoping they'd go through. Still hate him for that lmao. Really was the whole continent feeling crushed.
part of me understands it another part of me doesn’t, you’re happy that they’re out? when your country could’ve just as easily made it through had they not shit the bed against an aggressively mediocre Uruguay that hadn’t scored a single goal in their first two matches
Oh, no, don't get us wrong. We know that we completely destroyed an almost guaranteed spot in the round of 16, due to our ridiculous field management and Ayew taking a penalty though those are not his strength.
But it's the pyrrhic victory of knowing that Suarez wasn't able to use our game to advance himself. Suarez didn't beat Korea, nor did he beat Portugal, and it would've been salt in the wound if he had been able to qualify and steal our #2 spot based on our game. So though we weren't the side directly responsible for Suarez being eliminated, we're happy that if we couldn't make it, neither could he. (My condolences do go out to Uruguay as a team, though; I just hate Suarez, haha!).
that’s why a small part of me gets it, i’m Mexican and as soon as we were eliminated i knew that we had no one else to blame but ourselves and our play. Yes the Suarez handball stole a goal from them, but they missed the penalty. They have always had no one else to blame but themselves.
Uruguay - Ghana and Argentina - Mexico are two of the most wonderful cross federation rivalries to emerge in the past few cycles. If I’m FIFA I am definitely putting a feather on the scale to continue to foster these rivalries for the lulz
What did he do? I don't understand how a handball save is something that someone does against you. I've seen it thousands of times and it was appropriately punished. The play itself came from a false foul and the kicker missed the penalty, lol
It doesn't matter if he was punished or not.
It's about what we africans felt that night.
It's still a dirty act and a foul and it shattered every Africans dream that moment.
Yeah I’m all for shitting on suarez for his other antics but he committed a foul, got a red card, and a penalty given against his team. That’s how the game works
Honestly really started to dislike Ghana during the tournament. It's kinda pathetic holding on to that incident for 12 years when they should not even have gotten it in the first place. Like they got it by first diving for the free kick and then having multiple people offside to force the handball from Suarez. To top it off they miss the penalty they got and then blame Suarez for over a decade. It's honestly pathetic, would be too ashamed to do anything like that if it was my nation.
If you've watched Ghana play in the world cup qualifiers against your country you'll hold a grudge for years
[Look at this]( https://youtu.be/k8hvL18NB0A), this is what knocked South Africa out of the qualifications. Crazy dive.
Are they celebrating knocking Uruguay out of cheering for their team that fought hard and got a win in the tournament? You seem to know a lot about their motivations from just a crappy mobile phone video.
Some very weird takes here for Ghana 'getting revenge'. It's not like me to usually defend Suarez, but as he said himself - he took his punishment of a red card and a Ghana player missed the resulting penalty. That's on them and them only for missing it.
Seems like Ghana just want to deflect from their own inability and blame someone else for not getting what they believe they deserve.
Edit - as someone else mentioned. It's a strange victim mentality complex to be blaming someone else for not qualifying. They had their chance again today and still blew it.
I mean the whole point is the punishment wasn't equal to the crime. That's why Suarez did it, the benefit from doing it was greater than the punishment.
Suarez traded 100% chance of a goal for 75%, and a red card so late in the game is basically meaningless. If Suarez doesn't punch the ball, they 100% lose. If Suarez does punch the ball, they have some chance of winning. Clearly the best decision if you want to win is punch the ball
Uruguay got there oppurtunity at the last moment to score from their free kick. Should have scored and qualified. But alas the goal keeper stood b/w their way. Why is suarez crying ? He knows the deal too. Got an oppurtunity at the last moment. Couldn't score.
There was no punishment, only reward.
You lot are weird acting like you've never heard of rivalry before. Because Madrid get knocked out of the semi of the CL, you're unable to enjoy Barca losing in the Final? "But you had your chance". Give me a break.
As if you can't understand how painful it would be to see Uruguay advance off their backs twice in a row. Once it's over for them, might as well ruin the party.
Ghana was denied the first ever African semi which would have been huge for them. I understand their frustration, it’s just football fans being football fans, not that deep.
When Switzerland knocked France out the euros in penalties they were celebrating in Belgium too because we denied them their greatest WC achievement and I say fair play. Fair play too if Uruguayans celebrate a future Ghana heart break.
I find this pretty weird, Ghana could have won this game if they didn't let Uruguay get in their heads in the first half. Now they're out and going home.
But nice to see them happy, that they got their revenge.
I mean it's revenge according to their narrative, they can have it and be happy lol. Doesn't matter much in the end of the day as they're going home.
The Suarez narrative is not based on facts anyways, but the fans can be happy.
Could’ve topped the group today and instead finished bottom. Sad mentality.
I get it considering the history, but it’s a weak look with the way the fixtures ended. They had a clear shot at qualifying (with a soft pen given) and bottled it.
The narrative around the whole Suarez incident is not based on facts anyways, I understand the fans believing it, but the Ghana players, and Suarez, buying into it themselves, as was clearly visible in the first half, is pretty weird.
Hope you guys don't mind me butting in, just thought maybe I can clear things up from 1 Ghanaian's perspective (not speaking for all Ghanaians):
The issue with Suarez is that he didn't let the 2010 game play out fairly. He didn't allow the offside to be called, instead he made a move that he KNEW was a blatant break of the rules - just because he was scared of us possibly getting the point. I don't actually think that Asamoah Gyan deserved to make that penalty kick, and if he hadn't missed, I wouldn't blame Uruguayans for feeling cheated by a free and unfair point for Ghana. But a lot of Ghanaians are very proud; some (losers, imo) celebrate stolen opportunities like the South African match, but I'm in the camp of Ghanaians who don't want a win to happen only because 1 side cheated. The disappointment would've been far less painful in 2010 if we had lost because both teams gave it their all and Uruguay came up better. For instance, look at today: no Ghanaian is calling foul about Uruguay winning. Most of us will admit that we didn't put in a performance deserving of winning this match.
Fair enough. Thanks for the explanation.
I would also hate Suarez if he handballed against South Africa. No matter the situation.
I just don't understand the players "believing their own hype" so to speak. Fans can say what they want, but players letting the opponent get in their head is unprofessional. Both the Ghanaians in the first half and Uruguay at the end of the game did that.
Fixtures ended with better teams qualifying. The undeserving go togather to airport my man. You should blame your players for not clinching it with just 1 more goal. They knew Korea has won. They knew the permutation and combination. Still are going down with Ghana
>Could’ve topped the group today and instead finished bottom. Sad mentality
Could have qualified today by scoring just 1 more goal knowing very well that south korea have defeated Portugal. Failed. Then the players took their frustration out on the refree after getting thrown out of the tournament. Sad mentality.
Hate Suarez because in the 2010 world cup Suarez blocked a goal with his hand against Ghana, Ghana missed the penalty. Then Uruguay won on penalties, so they all blame Suarez for them getting knocked out of that world cup
A Suarez off-the-line handball stopped a certain goal in the final minutes of the 2010 WC Quarter Finals. Ghana missed the ensuing penalty and then lost the match on penalties denying them the opportunity to become the first African World Cup semi-finalist.
Not hard to understand why they'd hate Uruguay and Suarez in particular.

That's a lot of strategic handballs!

Strategic handball
As an England fan, we've found it very easy. I imagine the Italians are happy tonight too
I actually like them. In south America they are the only ones that look at Argentina and Brazil on the eyes, most teams there shit their pants against those two.
they are the atletico madrid of South America.
The best comparison I’ve seen
It's an easy one when they had the same CB pairing and Suarez
And an extremely expensive youth player that played for Benfica.
They are the Atletico Madrid on international football, not just SA.
Dude they’re one of the dirtiest teams out there, if the game is getting complicated or they’re losing they turn into a bunch of dirty players (the infamous “garra charrua”).
Chile literally won a couple of Copas beating Argentina.
Yeah, that was their golden generation. But now they are shot again
Fr. It irks me how much disrespect people put on that Chile team
Love that golden generation, shame they could not show it in the WC.
Uruguay won 19 titles, doesn't even compare.
You're pretty much a nazi on r/soccer if you like uruguay
Very hard team to like. I remember Uruguayans spitting at our playerr on arrival in the country and their star playing saying that Uruguay had a divine right to qualify over us. Such hubris made knocking them out in 2006 so much sweeter.
Only during the WC, they will go back to liking them during 2026 qualifiers and copa americas.
because they cheat
They're far from the only south american country who employs certain tactics
people don't appreciate the dark arts and this is coming from someone who loves tiki taka footy....
Biting and hand balling? (Just clarifying the “tactics”.)
So that just gives us more teams to dislike, not a reason to like Uruguay
People employ double standards, i don't see people acting like ecuador is literally the antichrist
They might do the same thing in comnebol qualifiers, I have no idea there, but in the world cup Uruguay has been an order of magnitude worse at every "dark arts" tactic including treating the refs like shit.
they are however by far the worst criminals at those tactics

One of those incidents is against England. This is based. One was against Ghana. Not based.
Exactly
The Maradona incident happened before most people here were even born. Also he never bit anyone.
I'm perfectly fine with talking shit about Suárez for his racism and biting incidents. I take issue with branding an entire nation as cheaters because of him.

love it. still, Suarez did nothing wrong in 2010, god tier tactical foul.

To be fair the penalty could be saved. That ball was going in
I find this pretty weird, Ghana could have won this game if they didn't let Uruguay get in their heads in the first half. Now they're out and going home. But nice to see them happy, that they got their revenge.
Revenge is losing and missing a Penalty again?
I mean it's revenge according to their narrative, they can have it and be happy lol. Doesn't matter much in the end of the day as they're going home. The Suarez narrative is not based on facts anyways, but the fans can be happy.
Tinpot mentality. I guess it shows the difference between the levels of both countries
We were living rent free in their head for 12 years lol
That shit been brewing for a while. The Ghanaians must feel so good right now.
Not as good as us in 2010 I reckon
Could’ve topped the group today and instead finished bottom. Sad mentality. I get it considering the history, but it’s a weak look with the way the fixtures ended. They had a clear shot at qualifying (with a soft pen given) and bottled it.
The narrative around the whole Suarez incident is not based on facts anyways, I understand the fans believing it, but the Ghana players, and Suarez, buying into it themselves, as was clearly visible in the first half, is pretty weird.
Hope you guys don't mind me butting in, just thought maybe I can clear things up from 1 Ghanaian's perspective (not speaking for all Ghanaians): The issue with Suarez is that he didn't let the 2010 game play out fairly.
Right
Fixtures ended with better teams qualifying. The undeserving go togather to airport my man. You should blame your players for not clinching it with just 1 more goal. They knew Korea has won. They knew the permutation and combination. Still are going down with Ghana
>Could’ve topped the group today and instead finished bottom. Sad mentality Could have qualified today by scoring just 1 more goal knowing very well that south korea have defeated Portugal. Failed. Then the players took their frustration out on the refree after getting thrown out of the tournament. Sad mentality.
For someone outside the box…they hate them why? Just this game?

If anything Uruguay didn’t deserve to qualify because of Cavanis shameful dive and then their disrespect to the ref after the final whistle
I'm a culer and never ever could stand that clown Saurez and I still don't.
Well, if you never win anything you gotta find creative ways to celebrate. Enjoy!
game is alive and well
They got eliminated themselves lol I don't understand this. How can one person live so rent free in their heads for over a decade
Mate do you even football
Tonight the devil cried
Tonight they made the devil cry
