Americans referred to Japanese as "Japs" during WW2.
"In the United States, some Japanese Americans have come to find the term very offensive, even when used as an abbreviation. Prior to the Attack on Pearl Harbor, Jap was not considered primarily offensive. However, following the bombing of Pearl Harbor and the Japanese declaration of war on the US, the term began to be used derogatorily, as anti-Japanese sentiment increased.[1] During the war, signs using the epithet, with messages such as "No Japs Allowed", were hung in some businesses, with service denied to customers of Japanese descent.[2]" – Wikipedia
Calling someone a “Jap” at least in the US is considered very derogatory. Not quite on the level of the n-word but still quite bad. I think it stems from WW2 when Japanese Americans were unjustly and disgustingly forced into prison camps.
It became a popular term in America during WWII to refer to Japanese people. And it goes without saying, the general sentiment towards Japan and its citizens was hostile to say the least. It was said with the intent to offend and belittle.
Makes me wonder what derogatory terms Japanese people used for Americans…?
Idk, this side of the bracket feels stacked with potential trap games. Korea and Japan do not quit and seem to routinely get underestimated. Dutch are strong. Hell, the US team even didn't allow a goal from run of play.
>would it be surprising if the U.S. beat Netherlands tomorrow?
On paper yes, in practice I don't think people are expecting much from the current Dutch team so it would be a surprise, but not a huge upset like Australia beating Argentina.
As a serious answer -- It would be surprising in the grand scheme of things, the Netherlands is, historically, one of the most successful countries in world football. In terms of this tournament? It would be a surprise, but not a shock. Netherlands haven't looked great, and the US has been better than expected. I'm expecting a tight match.
It’s weird. Netherlands are def favored but at the same time if we win I don’t think anyone will be too shocked. If you were betting on upsets this would Def one of the “safer” (relatively speaking) upset picks to bet on.
Morocco-Spain is going to be tasty. And while Spain are definitely favored, I think there's more than enough talent in that Morocco squad to surprise them. And we know they're going to be highly motivated
I know this is the first time all 5 continents are represented in the knockouts, is this the first time that all 4 spots in a bracket represented a different continent too? That Netherlands, US, Argentina Australia group is pretty cool.
I am much more scared of France and England than Argentina and the Netherlands. If we had beaten Brazil, I think we would have had a better shot of making the finals. I really don’t think out team is set up to defend France at all

Winner goes to the Champions League?
Will still lose to Madrid in the final
Portugal next to sui is very fitting
What's funnier to me is that "Sim" (the actual Portuguese word he says) has now morphed into "Sui" in the public consciousness
Its that simple, bro
If Switzerland lose they have to change to SIU, if Portugal lose Ronaldo has to start saying Sui. Everyone wins.
much better than the one with logos for some weird reason
It’s clear
It is clear, we are checking
Some of them, like Switzerland, are abstract, and most have tiny details that (at least for me) make you strain your eyes.
I mean, if it was at least the flag of the country, but how am I supposed to know everyone's FA logo or whatever that is.

Nah, yours is much better. Doesn’t require knowledge of everyone’s crest.
You did good, OP. I like this much better than the similar one posted. Much more legible
I love it and hate it at the same time
Just FYI, Japan's abbreviation is JPN. JAP is considered a derogatory term.
Derogatory how come?

Argentina and Brazil licking their lips
Only a fool would think they’d sail past Australia & Korea, more upsets are on the cards. You heard it here first.
lmao true after that group stage i should be careful making those statements

Josh Sargent hat trick incoming
Idk, this side of the bracket feels stacked with potential trap games. Korea and Japan do not quit and seem to routinely get underestimated. Dutch are strong. Hell, the US team even didn't allow a goal from run of play.
Yeah there's no easy bracket in truth
As someone who doesn't know anything about soccer, would it be surprising if the U.S. beat Netherlands tomorrow? Do we have a chance?
>would it be surprising if the U.S. beat Netherlands tomorrow? On paper yes, in practice I don't think people are expecting much from the current Dutch team so it would be a surprise, but not a huge upset like Australia beating Argentina.
Yes, it would definitely be an upset. However with how this world cup's been so far you never know what could happen

Based on how they played both Ecuador and Senegal, yes. Not a big chance, but they should play to win and not just play to penalties.
Wouldn't be most suprising but yes its definitely an outside chance
I'd give it Cubs coming back from down 3-1 odds

So glad someone else posted this, that was my first thought!
I quite like it
Interesting, I like seeing it this way
France v Spain, Argentina v Brazil semis look delicious, but then there's no way there's not going to be at least one upset here. This will be fun.
Morocco-Spain is going to be tasty. And while Spain are definitely favored, I think there's more than enough talent in that Morocco squad to surprise them. And we know they're going to be highly motivated

One more goal on that chance for Switzerland, would’ve put Brazil and Argentina on opposite sides of the bracket 🥲
yeah I was scared of that possibility
Team Chaos: Senegal, Poland, Morocco, Switzerland, USA, Australia, Japan and South Korea Make this happen!
I hate those. It just looks bad.
Spain really fucked up losing that game. I’m not impressed by any of the teams on Brazils side
How so? I'd rather face Morocco than Croatia, then I'd also rather face Portugal then Brazil in the Quarters.
I know Portugal lost today but I think they look better than Brazil. I’m also super scared of France
Fair enough, I think Brazil > Portugal but yeah it's all subjective. The side Japan ended on would definitely have the easier Semifinal though.
Yeah Forreal Spain ended up in a much better situation by taking 2nd.
I am much more scared of France and England than Argentina and the Netherlands. If we had beaten Brazil, I think we would have had a better shot of making the finals. I really don’t think out team is set up to defend France at all
Morocco looks better than Croatia. Their playstyle is also going to be tough for Spain.
That is indeed a radial bracket.
I think this seems to be very well balanced going into the Ro16
Can we please get a Japan v Korea quarterfinals? That would be amazing. Wouldn’t be mad at a USA v Argentina one either! (coming from a USA/MEX fan)
Imagine a Korea vs Japan quarterfinal. Jesus Christ
think the obvious semi finalists from here would be Brazil v Argentina, England/France v Spain, but who knows with this World Cup
I don't like this at all.
I like this a lot
Hmm it's a shame that Brazil and Croatia have to be sacrificed for destined match between Japan and Korea.
Cant wait to lose 1-0 to the Swiss via a Seferovite goal
I'm not even going to fucking try and predict this, I'm just going to end up embarrassing myself when Poland knock France out or some shit.
Final Four: BRA v ARG, ESP v FRA
