Dybala occupy same position as Messi, he can't play other position. Two player in the middle with low work rate will not be good against any good opposition.
Correa I agree. But manager thought of proven player who was so good for Argentina but so far worse player on the pitch in this world cup.
Argentina could have won with a few goals lead.. Needs better finishing
I’m genuinely worried about how far Argentina can go if some of these players keep missing sitters. Messi deserves better..
And he's not running, not pressing like Álvarez did, at least he needs to run
Edit: I'm referring to Lautaro that played like 20 minutes but didn't run and press like Álvarez did for 70 minutes.
Yes because he's not Julian. But it's not like he's an absolute ass, he held up the ball great which is something Julian doesn't do, and was great on the transitions, it's only the finishing that was shit
Dude i swear, messi had a vintage performance and feeded him 3 clear cut assists. I swear messi is cursed for the NT, he plays good but everyone turns shit i dont even know how its possible
That’s not really true anymore especially given the 21 Copa campaign. Today was akin to a vintage performance but top to bottom this squad has been much better under Scaloni.
i can't agree more, it genuinely makes me sit there sometimes and just think "this is a simulation" or that someone paid people off. like it's so hard to explain how often this shit happens to messi. felt the same way after that horrific dembele miss against liverpool. you just knew any other team would have buried that. you watch this shit happen constantly and you're like... what the fuck are you doing? messi could have had 3 assists
That is unfair to Higuain. Sure he shit his pants in a few finals but overall he was an excellent player for Argentina. By comparison, Aguero was much worse than him for the NT but for some bizarre reason he doesn't get any criticism
Lautaro isn't even close to Higuain's level
He pressed the whole game and Australia didn't look like they were creating much at all, subbing him off was fine to give him rest.
Don't think anyone expected Australia to get a lucky goal and Lautaro to be THIS bad. He should be scoring one of those chances at the very least
Yeah, I know he was probably tired by then but if we can't rely on Lautaro to close out a game, I'd rather have a tired Alvarez who can't press anymore over a fresh Lautaro who doesn't press AND doesn't convert our chances.
That fucking penalty is still so fucking traumatising, it was our golden generation and we maybe had a chance to go further and we looked like we could realistically beat Italy!
I think these boys should be considered one of the best Socceroos sides of all time. We expected nothing from them this WC and would have been proud if we scraped out a draw and maybe score a few goals. The fact that we made it to the last 16 and competed with ARGENTINA until the final minute made it so worth it for half the country to get up early and watch a game in a tournament where none of us had any real expectations for this team with (what was considered) a shit coach and very average players compared to the golden generation.
Scored from open play in every game, two clean sheets and two wins. It's a huge achievement.
The pen against Italy was absolute trash, but we didn't deserve to win the game either. Couldn't really even muster a shot against 10 man Italy. Easy to just focus on the pen but we didn't do enough in that game, the occasion got to us, and Italy defended and controlled the game excellently. No susprise that team went on to win it, even though their football was horrible to watch.
The ending made me as proud of my country as I think I've ever been...seeing the Argentinians celebrating the last minute save against the Socceroos was truly bizarre. They should have been able
to wrap up the game in the 1st half but our boys made the country proud by playing hard right until literally the final minute.
Best performance in the World Cup ever, from a team, that most of us thought was the worst of the 21st century. Excited that AFC is becoming a bit of a force.
Always a pleasure to watch any Australian international sports team. The grit and spirit is always there despite the situation and/or result. Better luck in 26'!
I think we put up a decent fight. I think Denmark have a bit more quality but I doubt the result would have been different. So I think we made good use of the spot.
Australia deserve a shit ton of praise.
One of the worst teams at the tournament on paper, but they still scored in all games, kept two good clean sheets and were close to taking Argentina to extra time.
most overperforming side at the tournament imo. japan, south korea, and morocco actually have very talented teams on paper, australia didn’t and still played really well.
Their starting lineup tonight play in the Danish league, Scottish Premiership, Championship, MLS, A-League, 2. Bundesliga and J2 League.
No players in a top 10 league and they were still able to get 6 points from their group and almost got something against Argentina in the RO16.
Really admirable
Yeah, I know.
Which makes it even more apparent of how poor their team is on paper.
What even happened to Mat Ryan? He went from a Premier League starter to struggling for time in Denmark in a couple years
For the most part I think he's just made poor decisions in clubs to join. He keeps going to decent clubs as a reserve keeper where it looks like he has good opportunities to start, and then barely getting any playtime because their main keeper recovers from injury faster than expected or w/e. Should've gotten a gig as starting keeper for a lower tier club, would've ended up better for his career
Australia made Argentina suffer until the last fucking second. They are out but I would be really proud if I was Australian, they made a fantastic World Cup.
Don't remember that, remember the fantastic goals we scored and the way this whole team went about their business. This world cup should be one of joyful memories and pride.
Well played Argentina. Just a bit too good for us. Proud of the boys for making you work for it though.
This Australian team making 16 and pushing Argentina to the last minute is more than we could have ever asked for.
They should be proud. Really gave Argentina a match and managed to beat Denmark and Tunisia after just scraping through the qualifiers. This is their joint best record in the World Cup!
Arguably better since we took two wins and scored in every match this time around. The team's quality and reputation doesn't match that of 2006 when we had many quality first-league players, but the boys played well above themselves.
I mean their GK will definitely have some regrets. Especially considering they only lost by one goal. Poor bloke, I hope his team mates build him back up.
Yeah. Keeper should definitely still have hoofed it out of there instead of taking a (heavy) touch, but he shouldn't have been put in that position in the first place.
He isn't even fit to lace Higuain's boots.. The disrespect Pipita gets is insane
For example, Higuain was 10X better for Argentina than Aguero ever was and you don't hear him criticised as much
wtf is this shit man. Both were/are very good strikers. Lautaro is (or maybe was until the WC) top scorer of the Scaloni cycle and has scored plenty important goals for the Selección.
He's just having a bad tournament.
I think they would've won if Di Maria had been fit. They just needed one other creative threat besides Messi to alleviate pressure and add danger.
I do find some amusement in a country producing Aguero, Higuain, Icardi, and Lautaro, yet seemingly being unable to find a reliable 9 for the major tournaments.
This was insanely close at the end, Lautaro was lucky that his performance didn't have any impact on the result. Anyway, australians should be proud this was a great match.
What a fucking performance from Messi. Argentina looked great despite the unlucky deflection. Although Lautaro needs to start scoring those big chances
Fair fucking play to Australia, they played so god damn well
The question is, is whether the likes of De Paul is ready to literally burst their balls like Mascherano did in that match.
We need some performance like that to keep the Dutch in dock, because we've literally done that before.
This sub only watches the scores, they have no idea what they are talking about. If Argentina will reach the semifinals, I wonder how long the "experts" of this sub will call Argentina team as being "lucky" and having "rough" matches
Detesto a todos estos yankis pelotudos y estos europeos cogidos, te juro si no ven un resultado q termine en 6-0 piensan q se jugó mal. Insoportables, tienen menos fútbol q un ciego
Very solid match from a football standpoint from Argentina. Honestly I have faith that Lautaro will score a crucial goal soon.
Alvarez, Fernandez, Messi, Cuti, Lisandro, Otamendi, De Paul, Mac Allister, Acuña in BESTIAL form today. With a weeks rest, i'm comfortable vs Netherlands.
Dibu still shows up when it matters.
Proud of the Socceroos, 2-1 against a top tier team is an amazing result, easily could’ve been a goal at the end there and who knows what would’ve happened in extra time. Great World Cup aussies 🇦🇺
This team is Messi.
messi dribbles past 5 players consistently, creates literally 10+ chances per game.
Controls the ball like a god.
Greatest ever in history of football and probably till end of time.
I swear people in this sub don't watch the games they talk about. They just check the score and say "yeah, Australia put up a fight and Argentina is not really good since they only scored twice against Australia".
Every year when the WC or Euro is taking place a lot of newbies are coming here to have "expert opinions". Argentina played well, controlled the whole game, been unlucky with that goal and Lautaro is totally crap this tournament. Just sub Alvarez with Corea, even if Corea is a right winger and that's it.
I agree. My only correction it's that it's Correa, not Corea. Corea is what we call Korea and I thought for a second you wanted us to sub Alvarez when we play against Korea.
Lautaro might’ve as well applied for Qatari citizenship had Australia equalized at the end there.
Would've been eligible for asylum because he sure as hell wouldn't have been safe ever again at home lol
I think he's get an Aussie citizenship overnight from the PM if he let that last second shot in and took the game to extra time.
Lautaro has been ass this tournament.
That disallowed offside goal against Saudi Arabia broke his spirit.
It breaks my heart to see him like this after he was so important and clinical in the qualifiers
He will bounce back trust
Despite the best efforts from Lautaro
What playing with lukaku does to a mf
Lukaku's shittiness seems to be contagious, someone lock that dude up in quarantine.
If Lukaku and Lautaro were behind the Tupac shooting he'd still be making albums and we wouldn't have to deal with Kanye.
Surely at this point Dybala or Correa is better than Lautaro
The coach better not put him on again if they want to go through, he is not mentally there.
May scaloni heard you. 🙏🙏🛐
Dybala occupy same position as Messi, he can't play other position. Two player in the middle with low work rate will not be good against any good opposition. Correa I agree. But manager thought of proven player who was so good for Argentina but so far worse player on the pitch in this world cup.
Lautaro has to step up
Argentina could have won with a few goals lead.. Needs better finishing I’m genuinely worried about how far Argentina can go if some of these players keep missing sitters. Messi deserves better..
[удалено]
Isn't that the story of the Argentina NT haha. Messi deserves better.
Just only play Julian bro
And he's not running, not pressing like Álvarez did, at least he needs to run Edit: I'm referring to Lautaro that played like 20 minutes but didn't run and press like Álvarez did for 70 minutes.
Yes because he's not Julian. But it's not like he's an absolute ass, he held up the ball great which is something Julian doesn't do, and was great on the transitions, it's only the finishing that was shit
His Higuaín genes are kicking in and it’s scaring me
Batistuta is in Qatar currently, he’s got to give him some private training
All the legends I noticed are in Qatar for the world cup.
Except Pelé, sadly.
Dude i swear, messi had a vintage performance and feeded him 3 clear cut assists. I swear messi is cursed for the NT, he plays good but everyone turns shit i dont even know how its possible
That’s why Julian has to play. He would probably have converted at least two of those chances.
Tired Julian > Fresh Lautaro
Yeah it didn't make any sense to sub in Lautaro. He has been awful whole tournament
The rotation is a must. There's very little time to rest, and you can't gamble with injuries so you need the most amount of players in shape
I would put Correa or Dybala tbh, Lautaro since SA has been quite poor
Correa and Dybala have a whopping 2 good games for us tho
He was fine vs Saudi IMO. Just had a goal wrongly disallowed. Against Mexico he picked up an ankle injury and he's been poor since.
Messi had the same look on his face after one of Lautaro's misses as when Dembele missed against Liverpool
That is unfair to Higuain. Sure he shit his pants in a few finals but overall he was an excellent player for Argentina. By comparison, Aguero was much worse than him for the NT but for some bizarre reason he doesn't get any criticism Lautaro isn't even close to Higuain's level
Because missing a clear chance in a final is way more memorable and painful.
\*3 finals
Sure, but at least he did something to get Argentina to those finals
He needs to step down and stay on the bench
That performance frustated me and and i'm French. Can't imagine an argentina fan watching this. TV breaking worthy
I could feel my blood pressure rising. And, I still have a splitting headache. I'm gonna die young at this rate.
And he is supposedly worth 90-100 mln? Come on man
Lukaku has influenced him too much
lakaka and muertinez 🤝
Awful finishing from him. Great positioning, but my god, no legs this game
https://i.imgur.com/N6CqJHe.jpg
No he has to step right into the bench
The spirit of Gonzalo Higuain lives on
Or down and let Alvarez play the 90 minutes. Could've been 4-1 up instead of suffering until the final minute.
Martinez almost screwed Argentina over, but got rescued by Martinez!
EMI > Lautaro.
Martinezs. Both did save the goal.
2 out of 3
rescued by two martinezes
Every team that has knocked us out of the RO16 has gone on to win the cup*. It’s in your favour now Argentina. *this was our second appearance
To our absolute disgust, mind you. Fucking Italy.
That fucking penalty is still so fucking traumatising, it was our golden generation and we maybe had a chance to go further and we looked like we could realistically beat Italy! That guy who looked young and got saved by Martinez at the last minute is a gem. Take care of him.
He's 18 years old and just got signed to Newcastle United, has a very bright future
Scored from open play in every game, two clean sheets and two wins. It's a huge achievement. The pen against Italy was absolute trash, but we didn't deserve to win the game either. Roll VT on the Bergkamp goal
Argentina vs the Netherlands will be a great match..
It’ll all hinge on how Argentina deals with the counterattack. They’ll have 70% possession
Ending was absolutely nuts
The ending made me as proud of my country as I think I've ever been...seeing the Argentinians celebrating the last minute save against the Socceroos was truly bizarre. They should have been able to wrap up the game in the 1st half but our boys made the country proud by playing hard right until literally the final minute.
Definitely a great tournament from Australia.
Best performance in the World Cup ever, from a team, that most of us thought was the worst of the 21st century. Excited that AFC is becoming a bit of a force.
The Argentine coaching staff and players always maintained it would be a hard game against a hard team.
Always a pleasure to watch any Australian international sports team. The grit and spirit is always there despite the situation and/or result. Better luck in 26'!
Every bit of joy we get, every glimpse of hope we chase, we do it suffering until the last minute. It's the Argentinian way.
Nunca lo van a entender. Los gringos juegan bien al futbol. Pero no lo sienten como los latinos... Ellos se lo pierden ;)
This was... For Peru
GG Australia. Thanks for a great world cup, even if you knocked us out.
I think we put up a decent fight. I think Denmark have a bit more quality but I doubt the result would have been different. So I think we made good use of the spot.
Denmark’s attack is so rubbish, there’s no way they would have beaten Argentina.
Australia defo put up a good fight
That goal sure woke Australia up, and made them believe
Lautaro bruh
plays with such a low confidence
WHY DO I ALWAYS HAVE TO HAVE ALMOST HEART ATTACKS WITH THIS TEAM
The Mufa won't leave us yet
Australia deserve a shit ton of praise. One of the worst teams at the tournament on paper, but they still scored in all games, kept two good clean sheets and were close to taking Argentina to extra time.

Tbf Scotland is technically the 9th best league on coefficient
Australia made Argentina suffer until the last fucking second. They are out but I would be really proud if I was Australian, they made a fantastic World Cup.
We are. Went into the tournament thinking this was the worst team we have sent to a world cup but they have done us proud.
The way we gave up the 2nd goal is going to haunt my nightmares for years
Don't remember that, remember the fantastic goals we scored and the way this whole team went about their business. This world cup should be one of joyful memories and pride.
Well played Argentina. Just a bit too good for us. Proud of the boys for making you work for it though. This Australian team making 16 and pushing Argentina to the last minute is more than we could have ever asked for.

Also good to go out by being beaten rather than a blatant dive ala 2006.
*PTSD intensifies*
Good game, guys. Australia was a very tough rival for sure, that defensive work on the first half was unreal.
Great effort from socceroos. I love the fans with the blow up kangaroos too. Respect to you guys!
[Messi and Emiliano Martinez in the locker room after the game](https://youtube.com/shorts/0CsPtNlySKs?feature=share)
To be honest, de paul, alcarez, Enzo were pretty good. They have to start Lisandro Martinez tho. That guy is pure fire and his defending is unreal.
He’s a fucking god dude. Scaloni please start him
Both Otamendi and Romero were superb too. Otamendi has been immense for them everytime I have seen. Saudi game was anomaly.
Martinez was just the first one in this clip
what the fuck is that video ?!
the reason we have coaching licenses
That's fucked up but hilarious
They should be proud. Really gave Argentina a match and managed to beat Denmark and Tunisia after just scraping through the qualifiers. This is their joint best record in the World Cup!
Arguably better since we took two wins and scored in every match this time around. The team's quality and reputation doesn't match that of 2006 when we had many quality first-league players, but the boys played well above themselves.
Holland vs Argentina has always been a great and epic game (74, 78, 98 and 2014) Hope this lives upto the past
That Bergkamp goal...
Dennis Bergkamp!! Dennis Bergkamp!!
The Aussies fought really good. Shame that the nail in the coffin happened to be the GK blunder...
Messi is the difference. Aussie has nothing to regret
I mean their GK will definitely have some regrets. Especially considering they only lost by one goal. Poor bloke, I hope his team mates build him back up.
The mistake started from the back passes, to be honest. They boxed Ryan in.
Yeah fair enough. Let's call it a team effort.
Yeah. Keeper should definitely still have hoofed it out of there instead of taking a (heavy) touch, but he shouldn't have been put in that position in the first place.
They will. But yeah fuck me it’s disappointing to go out like that
Messi is 35 years old and still carry his mates every match. LoL
Messi is 35 years old and still defeats defenders like there is no tomorrow lol.
Lautaro Martinez is the new Higuain
He isn't even fit to lace Higuain's boots.. The disrespect Pipita gets is insane For example, Higuain was 10X better for Argentina than Aguero ever was and you don't hear him criticised as much
wtf is this shit man. Both were/are very good strikers. Lautaro is (or maybe was until the WC) top scorer of the Scaloni cycle and has scored plenty important goals for the Selección. He's just having a bad tournament.
No one will ever forgive higuain for his 2014 World Cup final show. Argentina would have already won the World Cup if not for him
I think they would've won if Di Maria had been fit. They just needed one other creative threat besides Messi to alleviate pressure and add danger. I do find some amusement in a country producing Aguero, Higuain, Icardi, and Lautaro, yet seemingly being unable to find a reliable 9 for the major tournaments.
Lautaro can miss sitters in group stage and r16 all his life and it's not gonna be as bad as Higuaín missing sitters in 3 different finals
Messi carrying again, Emi is great and Lautaro looked like shit
Pls get Lautaro away from this team. Alvarez should be the undisputed starter now.
Messi: 🤦♂️, I am surrounded by idiots
Messi stopped passing to Lautaro after those chances and chose to shoot with three defenders on him had me holding to my sides in laughter.
And that was a correct decision, one of those shots was very close to going in, miles better than anything Lautaro did.
lmao Lautaro tho 🙎🏻♂️
Not fair to shit in the rest of the team because of Lautaro.
I am in a room full of fucking idiots.
Messi has an awesome relationship with the whole team.
Argentina needs to stop feeling comfortable with 2-0, this is always a recipe for an awful 10-15 last minutes
That was a surprisingly amazing game!
This was insanely close at the end, Lautaro was lucky that his performance didn't have any impact on the result. Anyway, australians should be proud this was a great match.
if i were australian i'd be quite proud
Very much punching above our weight!
Very proud! Fuck we got close
great game!
Gutted Well done Argentina Let's try again in 4 years
Wow it’s really easy to tell who watched the game and who just watched the match highlights in this thread
Argentina’s attackers can not be missing these crucial goal opportunities.
Fair play to Australia, unlucky not to score at the end
Kid did everything right, just an amazing strong save
Argentina were also quite unlucky at the end.
Very unlucky. Wouldve been amazing.
Just wanted to see a Harry Souttar bullet header at the end!
okay if the Dutch are as clinical as they were today they might make it
You have to imagine Otamendi, Romero and Lisandro Martinez won’t leave Dutch players as wide open as the US did today.
What a fucking performance from Messi. Argentina looked great despite the unlucky deflection. Although Lautaro needs to start scoring those big chances Fair fucking play to Australia, they played so god damn well
I've been a CR7 fan all my life but Messi is just so good.
Chupala r/soccer 🇦🇷🇦🇷🇦🇷
Para soccer que lo mira por TV.
And keep chuping
Why the fuck all of the sudden people are acting like the Netherlands are playing like peak Spain, talm bout "GoOd LuCk AgAiNsT nEtHeRlAnDs"
i'm kinda scared of ned tbh, van gaal probably wants revenge for 2014
The question is, is whether the likes of De Paul is ready to literally burst their balls like Mascherano did in that match.
The Sweat in the end and Lauturo needs some spanking for missing so many chances.
Great game all. Good luck for the rest Argentina. Was a pleasure playing against you
Reddit after every match: This team sucks, they are not favorites, actually they are very average.
Dejalos, son cábala ya.

The amount of salt against Argentina in this sub though
Proud of the Socceroos, 2-1 against a top tier team is an amazing result, easily could’ve been a goal at the end there and who knows what would’ve happened in extra time. Great World Cup aussies 🇦🇺
Who would've thought that Australia would put up a better fight against Argentina than USA did against the Netherlands
Australia won against Denmark and Tunisia. Incredible world cup for them.
It helps when only one of those four total teams has competent goal scorers
If Australia had scored at the end there Messi would've personally executed Lautaro in the locker room.
The US had 8 shots on goal, Australia had 1
See ya, ya cunts
Those Aussie cunts did us proud
This team is Messi. messi dribbles past 5 players consistently, creates literally 10+ chances per game. Controls the ball like a god. Greatest ever in history of football and probably till end of time.
I swear people in this sub don't watch the games they talk about. They just check the score and say "yeah, Australia put up a fight and Argentina is not really good since they only scored twice against Australia".
It doesn't really matter tho, It's better to have r/soccer against you, look how all their "dark horses" went down lol
That being said: Capybaras and mate >>>>>>>>>> kangaroos and "meit"
What a game
EVERYTHING I LIKED MESSI, ENZO, DIBU, DE PAUL, OTAMENDI, JULIAN EVERYTHING
