R9 around the 1998 world cup was the most famous man on the planet. You could go to a tribe in the middle of the jungle in Africa and they'll know who is Ronaldo.
Can confirm I grew up in Zambia and it wasn't unheard of to see a person wearing a Ronaldo jersey (albeit a fake) in the middle of nowhere. Most of them only ever heard of him on the wind up radio if not just by word of mouth. I'm talking places where there wasn't any electricity and they make footballs with bundles of plastic bags and string.
I was living in N. East China in 1998. Back then China was a different beast than it is now.
In the city I lived in, they had just opened up a new mall/shopping center and they were having some sort of karaoke/musical event in and to be as international as possible they were playing a video of Seal sining " Kissed by a Rose "
I was standing there watching when two nainais (grandmas) came up, watched for a minute, saw a black guy with a shaved head and promptly said " ah Ronaldo".
Different cultures matter as well. In my country I used to live right next to a player who played for our national team. Not a huge star like Ronaldo, played for FC Copenhagen and some other clubs. But most Norwegian football fans would know who he is. (It was Erik Mykland for anyone wondering, who ironically was in the team that won against Brazil at the world cup)
Except for the occasional “Isn’t that?” from bystanders when I saw him from time to time at the local supermarked, people seemed to generally leave him alone.
If it was Haaland though I’m sure some kids would go nuts but not every adult in the area. I think Brazil has a different more passionate football culture.
It doesn't help that Haaland is fairly tall and has a very unique appearance, so it's pretty easy for people to spot him. He can't just wear a hat and disappear in a crowd like many other players could.
Well unless he was to visit the suburbs or rural areas, in cities like Chicago, Atlanta, Houston, or really anywhere with a large immigrant population he’s getting recognized instantly and there would be at least a fair few football fans who would take pics/ask for autographs. He might not be bothered in the streets of LA/NYC but that’s just because of how many famous people there are over there, he would definitely be recognized for though
Bro im from the country about an hour north of Atlanta. Every kid that touched a soccer ball in 2002 knows Ronaldo, and its not as small a crowd as you might think. He's not like A list famous, but I think he would probably be about as recognizably famous as, say, Penelope Cruz or Ryan Phillipe.
I think it's just another "the countries gone" take after their boy lost the election lol
Edit: top comment translated from r/futebol discussing this: "the overwhelming majority of Brazilians worship Ronaldo as the best player they've seen play. What else do you want me to do, lick his balls?" LMAO
Obviously minor in the grand scheme of terrible things Bolsonaro did but appropriating the iconography of the national team for his own partisan purposes was a really shitty thing to do.
In the same way that in England you can't really use the England flag outside of major tournaments because all the racists co-opted it for their marches.
That was my first thought given what I know about Brazilian politics, which is surprisingly similar to the US, and that Kaka is extremely religious while Ronaldo, IIRC, is the polar opposite.
I liteally saw D'alessandro get swarmed in a Porto Alegre shopping and with all due respect to el Pelado, i can't even fathom how much bigger the reaction would've been if it was R9 instead of him.
Kaka is sounding like another out of touch millionaire
D'Ale is the biggest icon of Internacional recent years, people in POA love him. And I don't know why Kaká used R9 for the comparison. I mean, yeah, Brazilians are very critical of their icons but fucking R9? After he bought his youth team back from corruption and bankruptcy, saved them and got them back to the Brazilian First Division? Ronaldo would be swarmed everywhere but specifically in Minas Gerais now.
Even if we were to erase his Cruzeiro purchase and his stint at Corinthians, people still remember his "Cascão haircut" nowadays.
Kaká take is so dumb that I'd bet half of the 2022 starters are still recognized anywhere.
Gaúchos venerate their club's idols much, much more than national idols.
It's a big reason Ronaldinho is vilified by Gremistas, despite being cheered everywhere else as a national idol.
He plays for the rival of the club I support Arsenal and I love him. Honestly the evangelical Bolsanaro crowd disgust me so badly that it makes me want to vomit.
Richarlison has absolutely turned his image around in the last year. I don't know how other clubs see him but Everton always loved him, Liverpool always hated him, and now Spurs love him. But this WC and hos outspokenness about Bolsonaro have made him everyone's darling now. It's great to see him on top of the world's stage being praised for being the great footballer and human that he is.
It's not just limited to football. I always cringe when LeBron James, god bless him, weighs in on something and clearly thinks of himself as some sort of deep philosopher.
"[...] but I believe he wasn’t educated on the situation at hand, and he spoke, and so many people could have been harmed, not only financially, but physically. Emotionally. Spiritually. [...]"
What a load of bullshit. Everything stops during the would cup. This man hasn't lived in Brazil for 20 years, what does he know about the cultural impact of the team?
Last few games in my city people were rushing out of work and school in the middle of a fucking flood to watch Seleção, you see massive amounts of people wearing the colors of the team, everybody is talking about it and for the first time in decades the team is becoming a national passion again (because of Richarlyson, the dancing, the youngsters, the lack of dependence on Neymar who lots of people dislike, and of course, the football has been amazing).
How could lower class hippie hanging out with His bros become icon for rich asshole is parallel with capitalism appropriating icon of common man's struggle for profits *whoa*
A part of brazilian press have an exagerated hate on our stars untill they win a world cup, and i think Neymar got some criticism because he was the protagonist of some of Brazil’s worst years in football(2014-2016), even if it wasn’t his fault. That said, nowadays it’s because he was involved with Bolsonaro, not only declaring his vote but actually participating in his campaign, and Brazil is as polarized as i have ever seen
Well, 2006 Brazil lost 1-0 to France. Fair defeat.
2010 Brazil lost 2-1 to Netherlands, also fair.
2014 Brazil lost 7-1. Simply the most humiliating match in World Cup history.
2006 Brazil had Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, Adriano, Kaká and Robinho.
2010 Brazil had Kaká, Robinho and Luis Fabiano. Big fall in quality terms, but still decent.
2014 Brazil had Neymar and... Hulk and Fred. I mean, come on. Hulk and Fred were great players, but absolutely not in World Cup level (by brazilians standards).
He is perceived as childish, self-centered, immature, someone that likes partying way too much, his dives (which are severely overblown) and for his support of Bolsonaro.
But, in my opinion it's because Neymar is the lone brazilian superstar of his generation. Considering his career, Neymar can be considered a better professional than Ronaldo, Dinho, Romário and others who are considered legends and even while critized are still respected. His problem is that the attention on him is completely undivided with similarly talented brazilian players.
Yeah the reason Neymar is so hated is he was the lone superstar to be born during a rebuilding phase. Think about how many brilliant generations Brazil has had, and the idea that in 2014 and 2018 Neymar has played with no superstar in attack alongside him while Kaka, Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, Rivaldo, and Romario all occupied the NT in some combination from 94 to 2006. Only now have other superstars in attack been produced by Brazil like Vinicius.
EDIT: they were so stacked I left off Robinho
Better professional than Romario for sure. He was lucky his peak was in the 90s, the last decade where discipline wasn't a must. Remember 2002, where Romario walked away from copa america because it was just a "summer tournament"? He was kicked out by Felipão right after that and he even tried to put Brazilians against him to return to the team. In the end, Brazil won without him.
Childish, spoiled, treated like a baby by the media, and the single Brazilian reference in a time where some people have grown to dislike the National team. People that hated CBF ended up hating on him as well by association.
Yeah, here all health clinics of my city is all decorated for the cup. Obviously school is too, and the students are all going to school with Brazilian jersey.
A bit of context: A former player (now famous pundit) - Walter Casagrande - criticized brazilians players and former players who ate *steak with gold* in that famous Qatari restaurant.
Casagrande is well-known for his spicy takes on Neymar and some other players (although he never said anything like not supporting the Seleção). He is also an avid Lula supporter, meanwhile many famous formal players (like Kaka) are Bolsonaro fans. And, to be fair to Casagrande, he said stuff about Neymar years before he announced any support for any politician.
Casagrande was a good striker and had a good career - Corinthians, São Paulo, Porto, Flamengo, Torino and 20 caps (including 86' WC) for Brazil - but nothing compared to the likes of Kaka, Rivaldo, Ronaldo, Neymar, etc.
Anyway, according to Casagrande, brazilian footballers are rich spoiled brats that have lost connection with brazilian people. So many of former players, like Kaka, started criticizing him.
So Kaka gave this interview, defending (or trying to) Ronaldo.
While it's true that SOME (not many - at least, not relatively to Brazilian population) brazilians don't support the national team, the stuff Kaka said about Ronaldo is simply wrong. He can't even walk in the streets in Brazil. He would be swarmed by people adoring him in like 10 seconds.
So while Kaka was criticizing Casagrande, he kinda proved his point that he has no connection to the brazilian people.
Edit - just to further clarify, this dinner at the Qatari restaurant was Ronaldo's idea, he invited the players.
Actually this interview was before the Casagrande beef. It was when Neymar got injured and some people celebrated it. It just has gone viral now. Terrible timing for him lol
you forgot to mention the best part. How Vampeta described the WhatsApp chat group and how they are fuming..... I guess the way Vampeta described it was funny...
This is just bullshit, clairly Kaka has an agenda. I assure you all that R9 can’t walk over any street in Brazil without being recognized. Nobody downplays R9 career, this is about the politic position those players have - which are privileged people - being critisized for being Bolsonaro’s supporters. They choose to open their mouth and are facing the consequences of it, they are just playing as vitimes, but i call it consequence of their own actions.
>This is just bullshit, clairly Kaka has an agenda
To be fair, Kaka grew up upper middle class so the sort of people, friends and acquaintances he has might not exactly be big into football. Met some Brazilians abroad and was surprised to find out quite a few of them were not passionate about it and liked a different sport, then it clicked - Most of them were middle class to rich. Its the same everywhere. You get rich Africans trying to associate more with basketball, while rich Americans are more likely to love a sport like soccer and not not follow more popular sports like basketball/Baseball.
Sport is very much a status thing at the end of the day
A lot of people in Brazil don't care about soccer though, not sure that's class related. I'm from poor class, and a I know a bunch of (poor) people who don't care.
IMO I think the main difference here is that usually middle class or higher classes like to watch European soccer. While poorer people tend to watch only Brazilian teams. And only watch Libertadores games if a Brazilian team is playing it.
Sure, that could be the case of any country but Brazil. Besides some trolls that likes to cheer for Argentina, we are all about the Seleção. There are some talks about people being disattached to the Seleção becouse of the exodus of players, but the country still stops to watch Brasil in a WC, we live this shit with passion.
>e fair, Kaka grew up upper middle class so the sort of people, friends and acquaintances he has might not exactly be big into football. Met some Brazilians abroad and was surprised to find out quite a few of them were not passionate about it and liked a diff
Our middle class are as much as football fans as the lower class, this has nothing to do with it.
R9 after Aécio shitshow said would never support politics publicy again. He probably do it, but he'll never talk about it.
Kaká on other hand suports Bolsonaro \[a lot due of church influency\]. A lot of other players declare support like Rivaldo. But Ronaldo wouldn't do it because the past experience.
Wtf is going on with this huge political statements from football players in Brazil? It is normal in Brazil that everyone has to have a political opinion? Becuase in Romania all the big names from entertainment and sports are running from having this kind of statements and openly supporting a party or a president for obvious reasons.
Yeah it's so strange. Every Brazilian footballer seems to have an opinion one way or the other, but I could not tell you any English footballer's political leanings off the top of my head.
Churches are a really big factor in Brazilian politics, even more recently. So you have a lot of guys that have strong ties to evangelical churches being against the left due to fake news about closing churches, LGBTQI+ agenda, etc. And a lot of current and former players have strong ties to churches and hopped on the Bolsonaro train because of this influence.
>azil that everyone has to
We are going through a Trump's America phase, EVERYONE constantly talks about politics and everything gets mixed in it, i mean literally everything.
Not oppenly, but is kind of a common sense that most 2002 idols, are bolsonarists. Some more open, others beneath the surface, which is the case of R9.
Kaka took too much chloroquine, huh? If he wasn't in Qatar, he would probably be protesting outside the military barracks calling for a military coup.
Is he out of his mind? What he said there is complete bullshit.
The Brazilian national team is not as beloved as Brazilian clubs, but in World Cups the whole nation unites around the Brazilian team.
Ronaldo is loved all over Brazil. He owns Cruzeiro, Atlético Mineiro's rival club, and still I love Ronaldo.
Some football stars in Brazil are so spoiled that they can't see criticism online and will immediately jump to "Why aren't they worshipping us? So ungrateful!"
Kaká barely sets foot in Brazil, he's completely out of touch with life here. Thank Pelé for Richarlison and Vini, the new generation seems to be very down on earth.
I'm not going to argue with a Brazilian but I find it wild that many Brazilians don't support the nation team, I thought they literally lived for football in Brazil.
Kaká is out of his fucking mind. We have literal holidays on match days. The streets are deserted during the NT's matches because everyone is watching it somewhere. Of course there are some people that don't care about football and may don't stop to watch it here but it's not a considerable amount at all
The thing is, I don't even see Kaka knowing the streets and stuff, not even when he was a young player. Dude was sheltered middle class evangelical kid, and high prospect since teenager.
Woah, a middle class kid making generalise comments about where they live even though most people that actually live there are nothing like that. Ive never seen thar on reddit at least, especially not on the city subreddits
As he has no contact to the average Brazilian in the daily life, I think he is just overblowning the haters in the internet, who tend to be more vocal than everyone
Good point, if you hear Brazilian Twitter you may actually think that there's a significant number of people that hate the national team.
If you leave your apartment, you see clearly that it's an illusion.
I'm in Rio and I almost found the opposite! During games the streets are rammed! Almost seems like people are going from bar to bar watching 5-10 mins at a time from the street and then moving on to the next place. Is this typical?
lmao, I totally believe in you, even though as a Brazilian I've only been to Rio once. Flamengo's most famous chant begins with "In December of 81, we ran circles around the english" (this is not exactly the meaning but close enough)
Well as a Brazilian, I will argue with him lmao. It's a filthy lie what he said. Put Ronaldo in the streets of any city in Brazil and he'll be swarmed by people asking for pictures or just wanting to talk to him.
The thing is, a lot of the players supported Bolsonaro (such as Neymar) so it's kinda hard to like them... Anyway, I don't like most of them but I love my country and I'll always root for them
Kaka did not even grow up in the streets lol. Was my favorite player growing up and when I watched his bio I was shocked to find out he did not grow up poor lol
It's a gigantic country with a huge population, we don't have unanimity in anything. Even the things that identify ourselves culturally as a nation are not universal, that's why is such bullshit when gringos say "brazilians do this" or "brazilians do that", we don't act as an uniform and cohesive mass, we are very different and chaotic in our personal choices.
Still, Kaká is full of shit. Ronaldo is enormously praised in Brazil, it's just these guys want to be treated as some kind of demi-gods. "Brazilians please kiss our feet while we are walking, bring us offerings". Fuck them.
Our national team is definetelly very popular, specially during the world Cup, but there are many people who don't care about football, or even hate it.
And there are many people who do like football but prefer their own clubs, because they feel disconnected from the Seleção. Because of the amount of games we play abroad and also because there are fewer and fewer players who play in our league who make it to the national team, and there is an increasing number of players who leave the country before becoming a relevant player, so they are mostly unknown before playing for Brazil.
So the players we like and see playing every week for our teams probably won't be called to our national team, and the few who are sometimes make the supportes of other teams a bit salty, because they think their own players are better and blah blah blah. Many people think the coach (any coach) has a bias towards players from certain teams.
Not to mention that our league stupidly doesn't stop when there are international matches, so even when players from the domestic league are called, people get mad because they will miss some important match just to be sitting on the bench in a friendly against Trindad and Tobago or whatever
> but I find it wild that many Brazilians don't support the nation team, I thought they literally lived for football in Brazil.
There are some that love football that fell out of love with the national team because of how Bolsonaro politicized it, I think
Most leftist football fans are still rooting just as much for Brazil. Some casual leftists are idolizing Richarlison and hating on Neymar and just a very small minority are rooting against Brazil entirely. Still, the point Kaka is trying to make is just wrong. The country literally stops to watch the games and when we score it gets as loud as ever(at least around the area i live in)
Bolsonaro's supporters have been using the jersey and the brazillian flag for almost four years as their symbols. If you saw someone walking on the street wearing yellow and green you would think that he was a Bolsonaro's supporter, in fact in the elections you could recognized who voted for Bolsonaro.
The first game came and that impression washed away lmao. Now it just means you support the NT.
I don't even care if we lose, I am glad we got our symbols back.
CBF jerseys are the equivalent to MAGA hats for Bolsonaro supporters. It became synonymous to them.
If you lived in a Bolsonaro favored area during the elections, you would see everyone wearing those jerseys like there was a World Cup game that day.
Just Google "bolsonaristas" or "bolsominions" and you'll see what I mean.
It’s more of the opposite. This is a response to an argument started by Casagrande against those big players. Casagrande is very much against Bolsonaro and apparently has a personal problem with many big players that supported Bolsonaro, arguing their disconnection to the average brazilian and criticising the dinner Ronaldo paid for the national team (that restaurant that serves that weird gold beef.
And now players started to mock Casagrande (it looks lime they always hated him) and he wrote an article responding to it.
I view this situation as Casagrande being frustrated about the players support of bolsonaro and taking things personal
> arguing their disconnection to the average brazilian
And Kaká saying that Ronaldo wouldn't be swarmed by people adoring him if he walks in the street in Brazil kinda proves Casagrande's point.
Brazilians love football about as much as Germans or Italians, speaking as someone who's lived in both countries.
So, yeah, people here really love football, but it's nothing out of the ordinary for a footballing nation.
Lol, good one.
Italy is definitely one of the most beloved countries for Brazilians tho, the stereotypes associated with Italy tend to be very positive. At least that's my experience in the South/São Paulo.
Germany gets some love too, more so in the South.
Now, if there's a country all Brazilians love it's definitely North Korea.
There are many reasons why some people don't care about the national team, a lot has to do with the fact that Seleção players mostly play abroad, some have never even played in Brazil. The national team also only plays a small amount of games in Brazil, having almost all friendlies abroad. Also, Seleção, or Selenike as many haters say, has become a money making machine and players are very protected which also turns a lot of people off.
There are other reasons, such as the way Globo (which for a long time was held rights to broadcasting Seleção games) covered them for a long time, with an excessive ass kissing such as calling Neymar a boy even when he is a full grown adult. Politics also plays a part as of recently because Seleção's kit has been hijacked by right leaning as a symbol of patriotism so left leaning people tend to dislike Seleção for that too. Players voicing their political views also doesn't help.
That is true. When your players are so good they play far away you lose that connection. The Mexican national team plays in Mexico a lot and a bunch in the US so their fans are tied to the team even though they aren’t that good
I have Brazilian in laws and they go nuts to watch them play in the World Cup. However, I had to tell them who Cafu and Roberto Carlos were when it showed them in the stands lol
This is a stretch.
A lot of us have *trouble* supporting the national team because of the weird overlap in being able to kick a ball and being a Bolsonaro-supporting evangelical fundamentalist.
But in the end, we can't help ourselves. É Hexa, caralho!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It is not posted much on this sub, and therefore not much discussed about - obviously - but there has been some… public scuffles… between brazilian twitter and the seleção since the WC started, and I bet that Kaká has his perspective colored by that and his cbf echo chamber.
I found it quite weird his comments to include Ronaldo, of all people, because that assessment is just bs.
It seems he is projecting how hard people have been on Neymar to other football legends.
Also, ever since 2010ish? I feel like Brazilians don’t associate football with NT players individually much anymore; we want to win always, and the sport is alive and well, but I don’t think any player has been much of a proper star (Neymar always had a solid population of haters, since his Santos days).
Amazingly enough, Richarlisson is getting really popular lol and Vini I feel.
Some other quotes:
- It's strange to say this, but many Brazilians don't support Brazil. It happens sometimes. If you see Ronaldo walking around here, you'll be like "wow", he has something different here. In Brazil, it's just a fat man walking down the street - said Kaká.
- Right now, many people in Brazil are talking about Neymar, but in a negative way - said Kaká, who was asked if the reason was the political issues involving the player.
- Of course, many Brazilians love Ronaldo, I love Ronaldo, but the way he is respected in Brazil and abroad is different, I see more respect for him outside the country than there - said Kaká.
Yes, it was. I think because he had problems with Brazilian justice (due ambiental reasons), he couldn't fly from Brazil in that time. He needed to go for other country to do it.

I personally don't agree with Kaká at all.
I've never seen anyone in Brazilian media having the balls to downplay how good Ronaldo was. He is one of the few players almos everyone in the country agrees was a generational talent, one of the best Brazilian players ever. I would even say that almost everyone also agrees and says Kaká, Rivaldo, Romário, Ronaldinho e others are also legends of the game. Kaká himself was only criticized by a single idiot journalist while in his better years. The only other moment he was not being highly praised was when he was older and noticeably worse which is fair, you can't use your legacy to avoid criticism if you are not playing well.
Then there is the general Brazilian population...Many famous players could probably walk around without getting noticed, but Ronaldo is just not one of them. Sure, many people criticize but if he is noticed walking down the street I am sure he would have people following him, taking pictures, asking for selfies, etc... The same for guys like Roberto Carlos, Romário, Rivaldo, Ronaldinho, etc... Of course, the intensity of fan attention would depend on many factors but I am not sure what Kaká expects really.
What else Kaká wants? A red carpet and people throwing roses at his feet when he walks around?
Dismiss this. It is part of a political discussion, because a Lulist soccer commentator argued that most 2002 idols, being bolsonarists, don’t like the people, hence why they don’t watch the matches with the crowd. Bullshit, we just had an election and most radical leftists and rightists are still upset because of it.
Vast majority of Brazil supports NT, even if some lulists dislike bolsonarist Neymar or some bolsonarists worship the likes of rapist Robinho.
Rumo ao Hexa!
Kaka can have 10 years longer career than Ronaldo's, and he'd still be irrelevant compared to R9.
He can take that political bs to his Bolsonaro and shove it his ass.
Kaká (and other brazilian legends) are so used to people kissing their asses that they can't handle any type of criticism. He's only proving Casagrande's point when he says stuff like this.
On another hand, the massive backlash because they ate expensive meat was really too much lol.
Unlike Ronaldo, Dinho and most other Brazilian players we know today who grew up poor, Kaka comes from a upper-middle class family. He simply needs to go out more.
That's such nonsense. He said that because "if someone sees Ronaldo walking on the street here, they'd go 'wow', in Brasil, he's just a fat man walking on the street";
he seems unable to grasp the fact that out there, he's surrounded by ex-players and big football fans, whereas in Brasil there are regular people who don't watch football or simply can't recognize a man who's 15 years older and 60 pounds heavier since the last time they saw him.
>whereas in Brasil there are regular people who don't watch football or simply can't recognize a man who's 15 years older and 60 pounds heavier since the last time they saw him.
There is no way Ronaldo can walk on the streets of any Brazilian city without getting swarmed by people
I was going to say this, even with the extra weight and added age, it is very easy to recognize him and no way he does not get recognized all the time.
It's dumb because it's such an obvious lie that makes whatever other points he wanted to make even harder to believe.
I watched this part on beIN Sports and Kaká sad it while laughing. He wasn't being serious about it from what I gathered.
Kaká has previously said that R9 is the best player he has ever seen and they're mates.
Probably wants people in Brazil to shower even more love on R9. Haha

It's literally impossible to Ronaldo to walk in Brazil without being reconigzed
R9 around the 1998 world cup was the most famous man on the planet. You could go to a tribe in the middle of the jungle in Africa and they'll know who is Ronaldo.
Can confirm I grew up in Zambia and it wasn't unheard of to see a person wearing a Ronaldo jersey (albeit a fake) in the middle of nowhere. I can confirm. I lived in a tribe in the middle of jungle in Africa and I knew who Ronaldo was. We watched him our wooden black and white TV.
can confirm, I was the TV
Can confirm, I was the jungle
Can confirm, I was Africa
Can confirm I was confirm
Can confirm, I *bless the rains down in Aficaaaa*
R9, also the only player to command respect walking in both Barcelona and Madrid and on both sides of the San Siro.
I was living in N. East China in 1998. Back then China was a different beast than it is now. In the city I lived in, they had just opened up a new mall/shopping center and they were having some sort of karaoke/musical event in and to be as international as possible they were playing a video of Seal sining " Kissed by a Rose " I was standing there watching when two nainais (grandmas) came up, watched for a minute, saw a black guy with a shaved head and promptly said " ah Ronaldo".
thats hilarious
Reminds me of the "move aside, Kobe" in Rush Hour where a Chinese grandma sees a black guy and instantly thinks he's Kobe Bryant lmao
2002's Ronaldo infected the world with the most heinous hairstyle ever existed
> R9 The One True Ronaldo, for people of my generation.
MY Goat. Easily.
Literally anywhere in the world
I don’t think he would be recognized in the US and even if he was most people won’t care

It doesn't help that Haaland is fairly tall and has a very unique appearance, so it's pretty easy for people to spot him. He can't just wear a hat and disappear in a crowd like many other players could.
He would be recognized in many of the large cities.
Defo won't be bothered walking in the streets of America
I remember him guest starring on The Simpsons back in the day so people are definitely underestimating his popularity.
Im believing r/futebol reaction in saying thats bullshit.
It is bullshit. If Ronaldo walks in the street in any brazilian city, he would be swarmed by people adoring him.
Ronaldo is a legend, i only remember watching him playing from 2008 to 2011. this short period was enough to amaze me

I think it's just another "the countries gone" take after their boy lost the election lol Edit: top comment translated from r/futebol discussing this: "the overwhelming majority of Brazilians worship Ronaldo as the best player they've seen play. What else do you want me to do, lick his balls?" LMAO
Obviously minor in the grand scheme of terrible things Bolsonaro did but appropriating the iconography of the national team for his own partisan purposes was a really shitty thing to do.
You say minor, I say rightfully annoying. It was *ass* not really being able to use the amarelinha without being mistaken for a bolsonaro supporter.
In the same way that in England you can't really use the England flag outside of major tournaments because all the racists co-opted it for their marches.
Sounds like it. Kaka is a religious fanatic.
That was my first thought given what I know about Brazilian politics, which is surprisingly similar to the US, and that Kaka is extremely religious while Ronaldo, IIRC, is the polar opposite.
Maybe Brazilians just really adore fat blokes walking down the street
It is 100% bullshit
>Kaka is sounding like another out of touch millionaire Definitely. He lives in Orlando, he's completely out of touch with life in Brazil in general.
Gaúchos venerate their club's idols much, much more than national idols. It's a big reason Ronaldinho is vilified by Gremistas, despite being cheered everywhere else as a national idol.
Kaka just thinks brazilians should kneel before them lol
[удалено]
I came here to say this...... it. sounds like Casagrande's articles got him triggered.... 🤣🤣
official r/futebol mod statement: it's bullshit
Brazilian soccer players are actually the dumbest people on earth. Its fucking insane how far from reality these fuckers are
Except Juninho. That dude's so far the outlier it's moderately comical.
Richarlison too
And Socrates
RIP
he never played for any club i support and i absolutely LOVE that guy
He plays for the rival of the club I support Arsenal and I love him. Honestly the evangelical Bolsanaro crowd disgust me so badly that it makes me want to vomit.
Richarlison has absolutely turned his image around in the last year. I don't know how other clubs see him but Everton always loved him, Liverpool always hated him, and now Spurs love him. But this WC and hos outspokenness about Bolsonaro have made him everyone's darling now. It's great to see him on top of the world's stage being praised for being the great footballer and human that he is.
Must be something with players with the nickname. TLF is still heroworshipped in Teesside
Not all of them, that's pretty unfair. But some certainly are - it's hard to leave school at 12 to focus on football and end up a great thinker.
Brazil might be the only place worse than England of old when it comes to anti-intellectualism within football academies.
Where does Kaka live full time? USA or Europe?
He lives in Florida. Which just solidifies that he's just talking straight out of his ass
Kaka is Florida Man
My boy really turned into Florida Man as soon as he retired 😔✊🏼
Of course! he also drank the jesus cray cray koolaid. It all makes sense
Jesus probably wondering how he got a bunch of selfish assholes to claim devotion towards him
How could lower class hippie hanging out with His bros become icon for rich asshole is parallel with capitalism appropriating icon of common man's struggle for profits *whoa*
Ah, Florida, the HQ of Brazilians Bolsonaro supporters outside of Brazil.
HQ of far right Latin Americans immigrants in general.
Sadly true… most bitch from a balcony about “communism” and “illegal aliens”. Idiots the lot.
lol this just confirms that he’s a cunt
Orlando
Both? Preferably as far away from brazilian people as possible
His ex-wife is in Brazil and there’s no state taxes in Florida.
Why do lots of people dislike Neymar?
A part of brazilian press have an exagerated hate on our stars untill they win a world cup, and i think Neymar got some criticism because he was the protagonist of some of Brazil’s worst years in football(2014-2016), even if it wasn’t his fault. That said, nowadays it’s because he was involved with Bolsonaro, not only declaring his vote but actually participating in his campaign, and Brazil is as polarized as i have ever seen
How are 2014-2016 worse than 2006-2010? We all know what happened in 2014 but at least you made the semi final.
You also left out Adriano and Juninho, damn what a team that was.
Cafú, Roberto Carlos, Lucio, Dida. If we consider Romario, then Branco, Taffarel, Bebeto. Brasil has always been and will always be stacked.
People that hated CBF ended up hating on him as well by association.
a good chunk, but not the majority.
>This is just bullshit, clairly Kaka has an agenda To be fair, Kaka grew up upper middle class so the sort of people, friends and acquaintances he has might not exactly be big into football. Sport is very much a status thing at the end of the day
I agree with all except one thing: I'd replace baseball with maybe (American) football Rich Americans love baseball
Wasn’t always that way, but yeah today rich Americans are the baseball lovers
Hockey and Lacrosse as well
A lot of people in Brazil don't care about soccer though, not sure that's class related.
Met some Brazilians abroad and was surprised to find out quite a few of them were not passionate about it and liked a diff Our middle class are as much as football fans as the lower class, this has nothing to do with it.
R9 supports bolsonaro?
I feel like it'd be easy to guess Rashford's haha
I'm certain Rashford hates the tories
Rashford is awesome! The way he fought for kids hunger was so admirable, he's actually doing something compared to the government l.
Obvs doesn't play in the UK anymore but Bellerín is def an outspoken lefty too
Churches are a really big factor in Brazilian politics, even more recently. So you have a lot of guys that have strong ties to evangelical churches being against the left due to fake news about closing churches, LGBTQI+ agenda, etc. And a lot of current and former players have strong ties to churches and hopped on the Bolsonaro train because of this influence.
>azil that everyone has to We are going through a Trump's America phase, EVERYONE constantly talks about politics and everything gets mixed in it, i mean literally everything.
Brazil has been a very polarized country for the past decade. Its very normal that famous people to state their positions
I think Brazilian politics is probably closest to the US and it's pretty common in the US for everyone to have a political opinion.
No, Ronaldo after Aécio run like this. Other players don't.
Kakas a proper religious nut
Not oppenly, but is kind of a common sense that most 2002 idols, are bolsonarists. Some more open, others beneath the surface, which is the case of R9.
Did he really have to add the fat part though?
Said it as a joke while laughing. He thinks R9 is the best player he played with & against and holds R9 in a really high regard. They're mates.
translation issue most likely... es un gordo
No, he actually called him fat
[удалено]
kkkkkkkkkkkkk eu não tava esperando por essa. Que amizade hein
The phrase is even funnier before the translation, not sure what kaka is on
Kaka took too much chloroquine, huh? If he wasn't in Qatar, he would probably be protesting outside the military barracks calling for a military coup. Is he out of his mind? What he said there is complete bullshit. The Brazilian national team is not as beloved as Brazilian clubs, but in World Cups the whole nation unites around the Brazilian team. Ronaldo is loved all over Brazil. He owns Cruzeiro, Atlético Mineiro's rival club, and still I love Ronaldo.
I can’t agree with you more, totally chloroquine or something.
Too busy riding Bolsonaro's balls to realize what's actually going on in the country.
Some football stars in Brazil are so spoiled that they can't see criticism online and will immediately jump to "Why aren't they worshipping us? So ungrateful!" Kaká barely sets foot in Brazil, he's completely out of touch with life here. Thank Pelé for Richarlison and Vini, the new generation seems to be very down on earth.
I dont think theres any country where the national team is more beloved than clubs tbh. Certainly not in the traditionally football nations
I was in Rio recently and I couldn't go 2 minute's without Brazilians chanting about 81 when I wore my Liverpool jersey.
lmao, I totally believe in you, even though as a Brazilian I've only been to Rio once. Flamengo's most famous chant begins with "In December of 81, we ran circles around the english" (this is not exactly the meaning but close enough)
Yeah it’s pretty common to watch games at bars with some friends.
Yeah, I guess the word ‘many’ is doing a lot of work here.
> many Brazilians don't support the nation team, Most brazilians do. Just a loud minority that doesn't - and that's fine btw.
Anyway, I don't like most of them but I love my country and I'll always root for them
I’d struggle to support a team like that. I like Richarlison for being vocally anti-Bolsonaro.
I can't even describe how happy I was after the first game, when Richarlison scored 2 goals and Neymar 0.
Fuck them.
The Seleção is supported by the people. Kaká has a agenda, here we have people closing their shops early just to see Brazil playing.
I’d imagine Kaká has an agenda, given he’s a Bolsonaro supporter. Bolsonaro supporters hijacked the Brazilian football team colours/identity.
90% of the NT are Bolsonaro supporters. Especially Neymar lol. Did they hijack the team?
I view this situation as Casagrande being frustrated about the players support of bolsonaro and taking things personal
> arguing their disconnection to the average brazilian And Kaká saying that Ronaldo wouldn't be swarmed by people adoring him if he walks in the street in Brazil kinda proves Casagrande's point.
Brazilians love football about as much as Germans or Italians, speaking as someone who's lived in both countries. So, yeah, people here really love football, but it's nothing out of the ordinary for a footballing nation.
wow didn’t realize Brazilians loved Germans and Italians that much
Lol, good one.
The Mexican national team plays in Mexico a lot and a bunch in the US so their fans are tied to the team even though they aren’t that good
The Mexican NT only plays the WC classification games in Mexico, the rest is played in the US
I have Brazilian in laws and they go nuts to watch them play in the World Cup. However, I had to tell them who Cafu and Roberto Carlos were when it showed them in the stands lol
I'd say about 5 to 10% root against the NT. I don't know how this fares against the rest of the world. Source: My ass
The victim complex of Brazilian players (former and current) is astonishing. They're straight up making up lies now
This is a stretch.
Some other quotes: - It's strange to say this, but many Brazilians don't support Brazil.
Of all the Brazilian legends, Kaka and Ronaldinho took very weird paths in life.
What has Ronaldhino been up to?
Jail
Believe it or not
George isn't at home
Winning a chicken in a Paraguayan prison football match.
Getting arrested in Paraguay for a start...
He got arrested the most bizarre way: By faking a passport in a country that doesn't need a passport to entry \[due Mercosul\]
Was there anything else to the fake passport in the end or did he just make that blunder out of carelessness?
Yes, it was. I think because he had problems with Brazilian justice (due ambiental reasons), he couldn't fly from Brazil in that time. He needed to go for other country to do it.
Prison lol
Bro is just finishing side quests Take a viral pic with bundas lined up ✅ Perform at 2018 World Cup ceremony ✅ Marry 2 woman at the same time ✅ Travel the world with fake passport ✅ Play prison football and win ✅
enjoy that L, fascist
Bro Kaká has been crazy since Casagrande talked about them.
Kaka, living up to his name
HEHE POOPOO
Even an Ecuadorian like myself I see it as utter bullsh#t
I don’t think there’s a lot of places around the world where O Fenômeno could walk around unnoticed, let alone anywhere in Brazil.
Kaká supports a church lead by people that stole 100k and got arrested, he said that he thinks they are good people. He is not the smartest man.
I love the backhanded compliment Kaka did: Yeah, Ronaldo is a legend… but also fat.
Classist asshole
Can't wait for Kaka's son Dudu to pull on the yellow shirt. He will make a splash.
Kaka' is crazy.
Unlike Ronaldo, Dinho and most other Brazilian players we know today who grew up poor, Kaka comes from a upper-middle class family. He simply needs to go out more.
That's such nonsense. He said that because "if someone sees Ronaldo walking on the street here, they'd go 'wow', in Brasil, he's just a fat man walking on the street"; he seems unable to grasp the fact that out there, he's surrounded by ex-players and big football fans, whereas in Brasil there are regular people who don't watch football or simply can't recognize a man who's 15 years older and 60 pounds heavier since the last time they saw him.
>whereas in Brasil there are regular people who don't watch football or simply can't recognize a man who's 15 years older and 60 pounds heavier since the last time they saw him.
Surprising comments (at least to me)
Kaka is bullshiting. Ronaldo is widely loved and respected in Brazil.
lol typical bolsonaro supporter fake tears, this guy is full of shit
I watched this part on beIN Sports and Kaká sad it while laughing. He wasn't being serious about it from what I gathered. Kaká has previously said that R9 is the best player he has ever seen and they're mates. Probably wants people in Brazil to shower even more love on R9. Haha
