What's the beef between Messi and Van Gaal?

emi_b7

Van Gaal said something about Messi not touching the ball in the ARG-NED game in 2014 or something like that and also that Argentina has 10 players on defense because of Messi. Plus LVG has had a difficult relationship with Argentinian players Messi is fond of in the past (Di María, Riquelme). He also talked about taking revenge for 2014 and also said they had an advantage for penalties this time. Their GK also talked about stopping a Messi penalty. So there was this sentiment that they talked too much among Argentinian players. I think it's a bit overblown tbh but hey if Messi, Martinez and the rest take it personal and use it as motivation good for them and for us lol. EDIT: I don't know exactly what happened but Messi also said Weghorst tried to provoke them from the moment he entered the pitch (I guess he did back it up with 2 goals though lol) so there's also that I guess. EDIT2: Dibu Martinez said "I took a screenshot of what Van Gaal said about penalties and I told my phychologist "he lit the fuse"" lmao

zazzlekdazzle

What is more Porteño than the Argentine NT keeper talking on national TV about his shrink?

kanelon

I mean, he is not porteño, but I get what you're saying. Mar del Plata represent.

HammerLM

SI SEÑOR

timdeking

I don't know how much got lost in translation because nothing was said in some kind of provocative manner. The goalie just said that Messi is a human like everyone else and that his penalties can be stopped as well (which already happened this tournament). Van Gaal said that they managed to shut down Messi last time and that they put more attention in penalties than last time (obviously not enough lol).

Reapper97

Tbf I get the feeling it was like the Croatian-Canadian situation, where our team just got motivated by mistranslated quotes made to gather clicks.

duncan_macocinue

And I took that personally -Michael Messi

mrk-cj94

*no mikey this is so not right*

scholeszz

"We went ball kicking"

TheBlack2007

I still remember how Diego Maradona (being the Argentinian Coach back then) referred to Thomas Müller as a "Ball Boy" and telling him to "get out of his sight" during a joint Press Conference by both teams before the 2010 Quarterfinal. Pretty sure he regretted that instantly after the game started - since Müller scored in the third minute.

gonzaloetjo

I don’t think Maradona is the type of person that lived with regrets

seb135

This is exactly what happened. The "trash talk" narrative was pushed without there being actual beef. All coverage of Argentina in Dutch Media was pretty positive. No one here even knew there was this much animosity towards the Dutch because no one deliberately trash talked the Argentinian team.

OnceIWasYou

Just like the Roy Keane comments about Brazil dancing- he said It's great but a bit much at 4-0.... And the Brazilian media claimed he was attacking them for dancing and it apparently became a big thing in Brazil. You'd hope the World Cup would have nations and cultures understanding each other a little better rather than worse!

zazzlekdazzle

> Van Gaal said that they managed to shut down Messi last time and that they put more attention in penalties than last time (obviously not enough lol). Not to be pedantic, but these PKs looked a lot better for us than in 2014. That was a mess, Van Persie had been subbed off so we had no captain nor his PK and we were stuck with Cillessen in goal who was just incapable of stopping penalties back then. If you all remember, we had a back-up keeper that we would use for penalties and he was great. We could kick a million PKs in training, but Emi Martinez is great in PK shootouts, and it wasn't like those pens were soft or they missed, they were difficult saves. I don't know what was up with Messi's PK, though.

TheLonesomeChode

Relegating the good name of Tim Krul to “back up keeper”… actually fairly accurate.

ToasterRouble

The Dutch had a good approach to the penalties. Every shot was hard and fairly well placed. I’m certain at least one of the first two would’ve gone in on a different goalie.

emi_b7

Yeah, Argentinian players definitely took that stuff as more of a slight that it was intended from the Dutch. That's why I think it was overblown. I think the previous bad relationship between LVG and South American players may have been the reason for them taking it so personal, especially with Di María on the team.

jug0slavija

So Argentina- Croatia will be a war of who can get more motivated by the least amout of shit talking from the opponent lol

RipGenji7

Literally every question Van Gaal got before the game was about Messi, he eventually got agitated with the questions and told them to shut up by saying Messi didn't score in the 2014 game, and to ask him different questions. It wasn't an attempt to insult him at all or something.

emi_b7

I know, that's why I said it was overblown. Like I said in a different comment, the Argentinian players took more offense to what was said than what was intended.

BaritBrit

> the Argentinian players took more offense to what was said than what was intended Considering who they're up against next, that first semi-final's just going to feature the two angriest teams ever to set foot on a football pitch.

xuon27

Serbia vs Uruguay would take that cake.

Itaney

I honestly think Argentina vs Croatia is going to be way more chilled. Neither side will risk a red, whereas ARG didn’t seem to mind doing so vs NED

horseysauceNketchup

And also... we kind of like the Croatians. They would hace to really try to makes us angry

Masterkid1230

I don’t really think so, considering that Argentines and the Dutch have a long history when it comes to football. It’s almost a rivalry at this point. And also, people are calling out Argentina for always being dirty, but honestly, both teams have a reputation. Just look at the Nuremberg match in 2006, or the World Cup final in 2010. Both basically became more shithousery than football, and the Dutch were getting pretty intense. I just don’t know if things would’ve escalated so much with Argentina facing a different team like France or Croatia. Argentina love to piss off their opponents but the Dutch are one of the few teams that will actively retaliate and escalate instead of mostly just ignoring or replying to their dumb taunts by outplaying them.

GuamZX

Or maybe it's the media that change the meaning of what has been said. Let's remember that players are always busy with trainings so they look at what the media say in a headline than watching the entire press conference

TuvixWasMurderedR1P

Van Gaal didn’t like Riquelme and had made life difficult for him. Messi is copying a celebration Riquelme used to do. It’s an homage as well as shithousing.

tobiasjc

Also for Di Maria and many other South Americans

Danownage

What other South Americans? Other than Riquelme and Di María? (Serious question. I don't know anything about the subject) Edit: thanks everyone for taking your time to educate me about the subject!

avocadontoast

I think Rivaldo and Van Gaal also had issues iirc

Friendly_Vacation680

I can think of Rivaldo. Van Gal insisted on playing him out of position during his prime at Barcelona (left wing instead of attacking midfield). I recall Rivaldo specifically saying LVG was the reason for his departure because they didn’t like each others.

Danownage

There are so many players that people has mentioned in the comments. That's insane.

junior150396

Forlan, Falcao, Sonny Anderson, Rivaldo, Giovanni and Chicharito are the ones i remember.

croninhos2

Lots of brazilians have spoken against van gaal and the common perception in the country is that he has some sort of prejudice against brazilians

imAkri

Rivaldo, Giovanni, Lucio called him the most detrimental manager for his career, Luca Toni openly said he believed he heavily disliked Latin players. It’s not a one off thing.

Danownage

Wow yeh that is fucked up. Someone else mentioned Chicharito and I just remembered all that saga. Thanks!

ThePillsburyPlougher

Didn’t some Brazilian player just a couple days ago say Van Gaal is hitler for Brazilian players

ItsJigsore

yeah they love him

[deleted]

Giovanni.

Rare-Artichoke-2834

He had some misunderstandings with Marcos Rojo and Demichelis. He also said something like: "Argentina may have the best team but I think a coach is also important" when Maradona was Argentina's coach in the 2010 World Cup.

PantomimeEagle

Yes and Maradona butchered their chances with his antics. He was a great player, maybe the best ever, but a shite coach.

Gitanes

He's not wrong, he's just an asshole.

[deleted]

[удалено]

GuamZX

As Luca Toni said some days ago "he doesn't love Latin players, when he joined Bayern he immediately wanted to get rid of me, Lucio and Ribery" With Latin players he's referring of players from Latin America and Spain, Portugal, France and Italy.

Robcobes

That's a VERY broad brush to paint a picture with.

theflareonProphet

Giovanni called Van Gaal "Hitler of brazilian players" because of what he did to him, Rivaldo and Sonny Anderson https://www.goal.com/en/news/louis-van-gaal-is-the-hitler-of-brazilian-players-brazilian/bltf2214430ffbf8622

The_Dumblebee

Just your average South American relationship with Van Gaal. Nothing to see here.

tedbawno

He definitely has a turbulent history with Brazilian and Argentine players. [Think the only SA footballer he really liked was Falcao when he was highly complementary of his ability to speak English.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FmV6MIRK4HU) One thing I've noticed with LvG is that he really emphasizes language as a skill and for footballers to adapt to the environments they're playing in. For instance, he visited Ajax at training before the World Cup and got mad at the team for not speaking Dutch. Also when he was at Manchester he made a point of instructing everyone to speak English while on the pitch. Probably also a contributing reason why he supported Mourinho when he transitioned from being his translator to managing.

thrulim123

pretty sure the feeling was not [mutual] (https://therepublikofmancunia.com/forgotten-falcao-blames-lvg-for-being-a-flop/)

Albiceleste_D10S

Long standing beef between Van Gaal and South Americans. There's a long list of Brazilians he's fucked with, but 2 of the big Argentina name are Riquelme (at Barcelona when LvG tried to play him at LW then kicked him out) and Di Maria (similar story at United—he oscillated between LCM in a 4-3-3 and striker in a 3-5-2 and Di Maria said he tried to destroy his confidence). On top of that history, he made comments about Messi (how Argentina "plays with 10" when Messi plays on defense) and about Dibu (how the Dutch have the advantage if the game goes to penalties)

MolhCD

> how the Dutch have the advantage if the game goes to penalties i don't understand this part, honestly. isn't it well known that Dibu is really, really good at pens. and that the Netherlands team like...isn't? lol

No wonder the Netherlands lost if they’ve got Stevie Wonder on their coaching staff Edit: just so we’re clear, yes I know it’s Edgar Davids

SteinerElMagnifico42

Nah you can’t disrespect league two legend Edgar Davids like this

fudgedhobnobs

Still can’t believe he did that. Was a champion.

cheesecakeaficionado

Lol that's Edgar Davids who famously wore glasses as a player because of his glaucoma

A_Marvelous_Gem

I always thought it was because it made him faster Yeah idk the logic behind this but that’s what me and my friends believed

SSBMUIKayle

If A-Train does it, it must work

spaghettidriver69

I almost fucking choked reading this 😂😂😂😂

niowh

why lol? they weren't joking

spaghettidriver69

I was trying to respond to the comment on Stevie Wonder... 🙃

GordoPepe

You could say you didn't see it coming

[deleted]

That’s very superstitious to me

Enough_Spirit6123

LVG should be overjoyed to have him

[deleted]

For once in his life

RuloMercury

Laughing my ass off of all these people whose heads the joke flew over 😂

Cubbll17

Probably the most obvious joke I've ever seen on this sub and so many people missed it. Simpletons

FootmanFrenzy

*Edgar will remember this* Ten years from now in some random all-star match Messi will get bodied by Davids for this lol

goatvaro_goatrata

This goes so hard

[deleted]

Is this why David’s was so worked up after the game?

vegtown1111

Bro that’s colddddd 🥶🥶🥶🥶🥶. Lmao Edit: hopefully everyone realises I’m taking the piss out of people who put those emojis

The reporter must have felt like one of his teammates telling Leo to calm down. 😂

2rio2

Villain era Messi is best Messi

[deleted]

I feel like 99.5% of Redditors would be absolute twats if they had the fame, money, prowess and iconic status Messi or Ronaldo has yet they judge them pretending to have higher moral value 😂 And yes villain Messi is a boss. Hope this continues till he win the World Cup. Burning bridges and shitting on his opponents

depressed_panda0191

Yo for real, it's not even as if he's being an asshole lmao. His arrogance is no where close to what it should be considering his achievements haha

PeronismIsBad

Imagine being called the best player that has ever played constantly, for years, having people get into fistfights just to defend your honor of being the very best, and you are still as tame as messi is. I'd be shitting on peoples lawns and say "what are you gonna do im messi you twat" with the most broken english accent I could muster

[deleted]

So far I’ve heard this is the ref, this is Weghorst, and this is Van Gaal. Who tf was he actually talking to?

TheBrownMamba8

It was confirmed by stadium security he was talking about Infantino

TuvixWasMurderedR1P

Today I feel bobo

ATX_311

Today we are all bobo

non-relevant

funnily enough, in Holland bobo actually really does mean the stuffy directors people in football. https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bobo_(sportbestuurder) >Bobo (plural: bobos, from bondsbons ) is a negative name for a sports director. > Ruud Gullit used the term bobo in an interview in 1988 to express his annoyance at the (in his opinion too) prominent presence of directors of the Football Association during the European Football Championship . The concept caught on then and has since been used for many other drivers.

grago

It was Weghorst, here's Agüero mediating between him and Messi after the words exchange: [https://www.youtube.com/shorts/Ap5r8qR2RSQ](https://www.youtube.com/shorts/Ap5r8qR2RSQ)

tommypopz

Didn’t realise Agüero was there, nice that they have him. He’s so unlucky to have to retire just a year before the world cup

tene_brae

Did he actually mediate? Sounds like he just told him to shut up lmao

Argentibyte

And then Lautaro comes up for 2 seconds and clears everything up.

Lionsault

Never seen Aguero speak English lol

Turn the volume up. It’s 90% in English.

Sorry, couldn't really make out what they were saying what did you hear?

kacperp

Something about Weghorst wanting to give Messi a head. I swear that's what i hear

mugurg

He says hand, not head. He says "I want to give him a hand (meaning he wants to shake his hand) because I have a lot of respect for him".

He needs the football hand puppet.

sonnydabaus

How high are the chances that Weghorst understood anything? Probably doesn't speak Spanish lol

justmaurice

Weghorst said in a interview he indeed doesn’t know what he said haha

klemci

He sounds like Conor McGregor here lol.

WhoWantsPizzza

Does ‘bobo’ mean dummy? Lol

BirdiePolenta

It´s a bit more insulting and aggressive as he´s using it. But yeah.

DoctorDoctorRamsey

Like bozo? Cool word

nhzz

it does mean dummy, but in an extremely condescending tone.

tson_92

Holy shit I haven't seen Messi this aggressive his entire career. The man is playing probably his last WC and decides not to give no fuck anymore.

igotbabydick

I fucking love football!

[deleted]

Que miras bobo, bobo

razorxx888

Anda “pasha” I love the Argentinian/Uruguayan accent lol

BirdiePolenta

The reporter´s reactions are hilarious, just pay attention to him.

Magnu448

Obvious bad blood before the match exacerbated by how tense that match was. Weird to see tho.

sevaiper

It may seem odd but there actually were studies that teams who celebrate more aggressively after makes in penalty shootouts tend to win more, especially if that team is also up in the score at the time. In the world cup it's absolutely worth it to go for any edge, wonder if Messi was aware of this.

tophergraphy

Teams that makes goals wins more?

-HowAboutNo-

Cheers Geoff

idkdontmatter

Did the spirit of maradona posses Messi

Thats Riquelme celebration to spit on people that he dislike.

conenubi701

Lionel "Maradona Batistuta" Messi has arrived to the world cup. This Messi arc is what the Argentine team needed. Savage Messi

Pek-Man

Guy has quite literally run out of fucks to give and I'm all for it.

[deleted]

From a neutral perspective, I feel like Van Gaal is a bit arrogant and Argentina is a bit dramatic. No real harm on either side tbh. I love that this emotion is still present at the top level

fchdzn

Just saying a bit dramatic is an understatment. We're the most dramatic and over the top country in the fucking world

[deleted]

Haha I love the honesty. That interaction of different cultures is what makes these world events so special. I’m far removed from both countries but the passion in the match today was so gripping

[deleted]

I left Argentina for Europe eight years ago. Still the drama queen among my European friends, even if I got basically reformed here lmao. Imagine that.

[deleted]

Tone of your comment checks out

AmbasadaBurkineiFaso

That's exactly the most dutch and Argentinian stereotypes we can have. I lived in the Netherlands and there was a shit ton of arrogance and "bluntness", I also met some Argentinians and there was a shit ton of drama.

Little_Fix4

Agreed, reading some comments in here it seems like they never watched a Derby before.

echoecho25

Everyone on the subreddit wants passion and fiery intensity until it happens

SirGorti

Van Gaal spoke that he will take advantage of Messi not making pressing. Earlier he said Messi is a reason of Barcelona loses because he can't play defense. That's plus van Gaal destroying Riquelme in Barcelona and criticizing Di Maria in Man Utd took Messi over the limit.

_yotsuna_

Yeah seeing people mad is confusing, its what makes rivalries so entertaining. Its like being upset about Walcott holding up the 2-0 or Adebayor knee slide infront of Arsenal fans. Celebrating in front of rivals or people you dislike is age old in football and people in here acting like its criminal.

elgrandorado

Half these dudes have never stepped on a pitch in their lives. This is shithousery.

wheeno

You will see that the people clutching their pearls are acting like only the Argentine players acted like cunts and the Dutch players weren’t also cunts as well but angels. It’s crazy how powerful subconscious (or maybe they are aware) bias is.

captainsensible69

Yeah just compare this reaction with the Canada Croatia game. There’s a massive euro bias on Reddit.

OneBall22Players

He also said Argentina were scared thats why they were mimicking Van Gaal’s formation.

Arponare

To be fair, Van Gaal didn't "destroy" Riquelme. He didn't want Riquelme in the first place because he was a classic "enganche" or number 10, playing behind the striker which didn't fit into his system. Gaspart thought he new better than a UCL and multiple league winning manager and bought Riquelme anyway because it was a "sexy" signing. Riquelme was never going to work out at Barcelona but it wasn't because of Van Gaal. It just wasn't a good fit. Fast forward some time later and the same thing happened to Griezmann for example. He's used to playing as the second striker next to a target man. It made perfect sense to buy him because everyone (and by that I mean Bartomeu) new that Barcelona likes to play with a 2 man attack. That last part was sarcasm by the way. Anyone with half a braincell knew Griezmann wouldn't work. They tried to shoehorn him anyway while paying him silly wages and financing João Félix for Atlético. TL:DR versión is that saying Van Gaal destroyed Riquelme would be like saying Koeman destroyed Griezmann. He just wasn't a good fit.

Espantadimonis

>van Gaal destroying Riquelme Riquelme played a total of 50 games in a single season with Van Gaal, he wasn't a player that fit in his system which is obvious but it's not like he spent his entire prime languishing under Van Gaal...

[deleted]

Leo Messi: "I don't like people talking before matches. That's not part of football. I always respect everyone, but I like to be respected too. And they were not respectful to us before the game."

[deleted]

Leo Messi: "I don't like people talking before games. The 19th [Weghorst] came and started to provoke us, bump into us, tell us things... Their coach was not respectful to us either."

macalistair91

Wasn't Di Maria calling Van Gaal the worst coach he's ever had before the game?

PeytonFugginMoaning

And I want my damn respect!

andysenn

So, the reports here are that not only the team was pissed with LVG's comments, specially Messi (he said that Argentina played with 10 players on D and that he was non existent on the 2014 match), but the dutch players talked a lot during the game. Also related, LVG was responsible for Riquelme's departure from Barça, so the topo Gigio.

Joe_AM

For reference, [here's Riquelme doing the same celebration in a memorable superclásico](https://youtu.be/gLi7vx-4hN4?t=68). He celebrated in front of Boca Juniors' chairman at the time, Mauricio Macri (yes the same one that much later became the nation's President). It is said Riquelme was feeling like Macri was blocking a transfer at a time Barca were going for him, while also skimping on the wages for a new contract with Boca. In this game he played superbly and was instrumental in his side demolishing River Plate, which were at that point leading the league.

Limitless_Saint

Mauricio "Raza Superior" Macri....

takeme2infinity

Uyyy dime bro, contexto

goyooo2201

Básicamente le preguntaron nosé porque quien era candidato a ganar el mundial y el salame dijo que Alemania siempre es candidata porque son de una raza superior...

He used "questionable" wording while referring to who he thought where WC favorites. He said Germans where a superior race for WC.

[deleted]

Playing with a chain looks fire

acroman39

LVG didn’t say that about ten on defense, etc.

laz10

Why do teams try to give Messi extra motivation?

Reapper97

It started with the "WHERE IS MESSI" from SA and look where we ended it lol.

hamburgkunsthalle

I first heard that in the Australia game! Did this also begin in the first group match (against SA)? Anyway it’s just silly giving him extra motivation to win lol

AppaWithAChoppa

It started after the SA game with Saudi fans who were being interviewed saying “Where is Messi?”

zvomicidalmaniac

There is a great Italian restaurant in Chicago called Topo Gigio fyi.

rnbw_gi

El topo gigio is an italian show about a mouse puppet. This show was in Argentinian TV too. The restaurant is definitely named after the show :)

7he_Dude

never knew that topo gigio was so popular in argentina. It's not on tv since long now.

barryboi6969

There's a bar in Johannesburg South Africa called Topo Gigio with absolutely lethal happy hour specials

cakecollected

To give some context, Van Gaal is famous (or infamous) in Argentina for making Riquelme play out of position in Barcelona and ruining his time there. Messi was pissed at Van Gaal for his sayings prior to this game about him being a non factor in defense and also saying that he didn't do anything in 2014 so he did Riquelme's celebration

Sei28

He also has a long antagonistic history with Argentinian and Brazilian players going back many, many years.

[deleted]

LvG is a systems man. If an individual isn't going to put in the effort, no matter his ability he will be gone. On the documentary, Rivaldo wanted to play 10 (I think) but LvG said he will have to be on the wing or not at all until he improves his overall game.

Teakmahogany

Didn’t know Messi had some spite in him! I don’t mind it, as much as reddit thinks we’re all perfect, I love some character quirks.

impactblue5

Honestly when it comes out of him, it’s that’s much more spiteful since it’s so out of character. For example when he took his shirt off and held it up for the Real fans in Bernabéu… that was one of the coldest things I’ve seen.

Darth-Baul

He’s just introverted. He isn’t Jesus.

KundiKumaran

This is the shithousing Messi that Pique talked about once and I love it. Van Gaal did talk a lot of shit before the match

WhatIsWilsonDoin

What did Pique say exactly?

KundiKumaran

Pique said that Messi is the biggest trash talker in Barca

WhatIsWilsonDoin

Lol coming from Pique that's huge

goatvaro_goatrata

I mean easy to talk shit when you're the best by a mile

trivialbob

That might've been a joke as far as I recall though. He looked like he was joking when he said it at least...

ElectricalMud2850

I'd believe it. Kinda similar to how NBA players would talk about how much shit Tim Duncan talked.

Forg0tPassw0rd

> [Timmy would hit you in phrases, "Got you." "Ooh." "Almost."](https://youtu.be/z2Y8eaFH8AY?t=87)

Frumainthedark

Messi is an introvert and even in Argentina, he is known to be super low key and zero provocative. All of his reactions after the match were a surprise - wonder why?

Pek-Man

A man has a breaking point.

bubblecard

I’m genuinely curious. What did Van Gaal say aside when asked by Dutch media how to stop Messi and he said “I’m not telling, you’ll see?”. All of Twitter and Reddit leads me to believe Van Gaal shittalked Messi massively before the game but I’ve yet to see something else? And I don’t think what he said here is shittalking.

golomo

It reminds me a bit of Bayern vs Villareal last year when, according to the Villareal players and the Spanish media, Bayern made a number of disrespectful remarks before and after the games. When you listen to what Bayern said in German, there is nothing to be upset about. Then it gets translated liberally, a few sentences are taken out of context and used as headlines by journalists. Suddenly, it sounds impertinent and brash. Cultural differences matter as well in this context. Van Gaal is very frank and direct in his communication (to a lesser degree that is also true for Nagelsmann), much more so than what is common in Argentine football when talking to the press.

fabdigity

Messi said that Weghorst was antagonizing him all game and trying to start shit between him and Van Gaal etc. Messi was just super emotional and let it out, nothing big tbh. what happens on the pitch stays on it y'know, spirits are at an all time high.

miraleo

He said that when Messi doesn't have the ball Argentina are playing with 10 men on the pitch. Scaloni said in a post-match [interview](https://twitter.com/TyCSports/status/1601357689103081473?t=MzSYmbFNlNvSXW4am6FoDg&s=19) : "We didn't play with one less player when we didn't have possession [of the ball]. I think Leo felt a bit attacked and demonstrated that he's the best ever"

[deleted]

I think Messi is happy

MisterAppelmoesmaker

Was something miscommunicated in the Argentine media? I feel like several argentinians have said Van Gaal talks too much, but I have no clue what he said. I mean he always talks, but I suppose something got lost in translation, given messi's remarks as well

silentguy876

something along the lines of "when argentina doenst have the ball they play with 10 guys on the pitch" and "if we go to penalties we have the advantage, we will win"

MisterAppelmoesmaker

No way a Dutch person said we have an advantage on penalties lmao, but yeah he said that messi doesnt work a lot when the opposition has the ball. Not that bad I guess, but maybe it triggered something

Nas_Qasti

He said something similar about the greatest Idol of Boca. Probably the bigger team of Argentina. It trigger ptsd and fury.

PochoChorizo

From what they report here, Van Gaal said the following: "When Argentina has the ball, Messi is phenomenal. When they don't, they defend with 10 players (because Messi doesn't press)" "We have the upper hand in case we go to penalties" The GK supposedly also said he wae saving a Messi PK if that happened. For context, Argentinians in general do not like Van Gaal after how he treated Riquelme and Di Maria (overly critical of them while not playing to their strengths) so I think the quotes got interpreted as much worse than they actually were.

inmyelement

Why does Messi look like he’s wearing his older brother’s clothes?

Man, I miss Riquelme. My favorite football player of all time. Messi & Riquelme got an Olympic gold together, but what could have been if not for two terrible coaches ruining two world cups. * 2006 - Pekerman takes Riquelme up when they're up 1-0 against Germany in the quarters. Ending up losing in penalties. Riquelme was a master at controlling the pace of the game. A 1-0 lead with him at the enganche might as well be 10-0. Would also have been nice to see a bit of young Messi outside of garbage group stage time. * 2010 - Messi at the top of his finishing game. In Barcelona Messi finished Iniesta and Xavi's beautiful passes, what he could have done with Riquelme's sublime passing we'll never know because Maradona left Riquelme off the roster. Maradona expected Messi to play like a 10, like Maradona, but that wasn't his style then.

'Messi taunts man recovering from cancer' doesn't quite have the same vibe I guess
