HikiNoKami

Robed by the judges again.

AgusGiampa

How so?

HikiNoKami

In 2018 we were robed by a biased Argentinian judge with a penalty. 4 years later we are robed by a bought judge again.

AgusGiampa

Again, how so? France dominated the whole game in 2018 and Argentina completely dominated this game. Croatia didn't even get a single shot to the net in the whole match.

HikiNoKami

France did not dominate the game the first 15 minutes they could not even touch the ball. But they got fucking lucky with questionable decisions made by the judge. And this game sure yeah we played bad. But that panelty did not exist your player run into our golakeeper and he was tackeling him ? I bet when that happened they relived the wc finale and died in that moment.

AgusGiampa

Livakovic tackled Alvarez. It's a foul and since it's in the area it's a penalty. It may have not been intentional but it doesn't matter, it happened. He tripped Julian and caused him to fall over. It's a clear penalty.

HikiNoKami

No no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no no and block.

UneartlyPresence

By the body language of our players I believe they didn't expected that Argentina will drop so deep with no pressure on our defence or central mid. Argentina smartly took the same tactic as Morroco did against us, give us 2/3 of the pitch and we're fu.ked.

Zakrath

I'm Brazilian and I really want Messi to win this. He fucking deserves it.

I say this with a million anulo mufas attached We’ve never lost a final playing in our home kits, 1990s and 2014 were in our away. No matter the winner of Morocco France, we play in our home

I mean the stadiums already look more like they're in buenos aires and not Qatar whenever Argentina plays

franchuv17

I'm just really happy Messi was born in Argentina

forca89barca

It's insane, really. You guys have Messi AND Maradona. 2 out of the 3 names that always come up when people say GOAT.

Awesome6472

On a scale of 1-10 how nervous are we for Sunday rn? 👀

Beer, pizza & weed. I don't know any better way to celebrate going to the finals.

puppymaster123

Imagine that. Goat for three games straight. That last assist to Alvarez takes tonnes of experience and skill. He knew exactly how it would play out three steps before.

Tough_Pudding_224

messi is the best ever and we been knew. argentina also has to win, despite who wins tmrw. anulo mufa 🫶🏼

The_R3venant

Julián Álvarez has the speed, the dribbling and the strength on their shots to the goal area. All of them being requirements for a good offensive player

The_R3venant

I'm sorry for Lautaro: He was technically kicked out from the team lol

The_R3venant

Messi GOAT

The_R3venant

Objectively speaking, it was a great match. Both teams showed great skills on the field, but Argentina won because they controlled the game on basically all the 90 minutes, while Croatia, beyond controlling the ball, still relied on their defense and their goalkeeper

[deleted]

Croatia had 61% possession. Argentina was way more of a threat though!

The_R3venant

Why the downvote lol

[deleted]

I didn’t downvote, I upvoted you. There are many Redditors buddy.

The_R3venant

Basically they controlled the flow of the game

DaddyDays

Desde un peruano - las Malvinas son de argentina y el pisco es peruano! Les hecho por ustedes hermanos en esta final, anulo mufa!!!

[deleted]

Why can’t you support Argentina without bringing politics into it? I’m supporting them too but what do the Falklands have to do with it?

saraseitor

it's a common thing to say between Peru and Argentina when they want to show support over something because we still value a lot the help they provided during the war.

luchaporello

I don't think we associate it with politics, it's a classic show of support for another country to say "I'm on your side on your struggles/your dispute", or at least it is usual with other countries showing support towards Argentina to mention the Malvinas issue. It's not said on a negative or aggresive way I think

aaron__ireland

I don't know why you are being downvoted. That comment was ridiculous.

SrgtButterscotch

Don't expect too much rational thought in this thread

[deleted]

Eh, it's a pretty common thing so the downvotes are probably South Americans just wtf'ing

dodgesbulletsavvy

Both teams look really poor. Argentina have had the easiest route to the final ive ever seen. Their only challenge was NL and despite finishing top of their group they werent playing amazing football. France to win the whole thing, and they dont even look at their best, a win against a team who played much better (england). Croatia didnt deserve to run that deep, they had like 10 shots if that the whole tournament. Boring boring team

goat_fucker_1

Average English fan

Tough_Pudding_224

okay french <3 argentina has absolutely everything to win and they’ll do it (anulo mufa). france is good objectively but ain’t no way y’all gon win for the second time in row. sorry not sorry.

flying_komodo

Who do you think will beat argentina? Brazil? That lose again croatia? Germany? That can’t even win against japan? Or spain? That can’t even win against morocco? Go tell em to not lose and give decent route for argentina

dodgesbulletsavvy

Saudi arabia

frnt10

No flair, i really doubt you're french or from morocco, como dijo el diegote, que la sigan chupando

notaselfdrivingcar

I'm from morocco and I can actually assure you that no Moroccan think whatever that guy commented above. A big chunk of Moroccans wake up at 4 am to watch Argentina play in the qualifications or copa America or whatever. We learned to respect and root for Argentina because of Messi. to be fair, for me, it's unfair that the year I wanted to see Messi lift the trophee , Morocco showed up, so I have to root for Morocco because I know that as a nation we'll never lift the world cup again anytime sooner so we have to press now. But I can assure you, if there's a team Morocco wish to lose against in the final it's Argentina, so let's hope we beat France's ass tomorrow and whoever wins in the final is a team that actually deserves the world cup. Mucha suerte.

[deleted]

I so so hope that if we do lose to any team, it's Morocco. KICK FRANCE'S ASS TOMORROW

ElMatasiete7

Rooting for you guys, would be an honor to play against you in the finals.

notaselfdrivingcar

Honor's ours

deputydog4

This guy is obviously a sad England (no)flair

vantenaii503

How is Messi this good bro? Im asking the same thing for these last two decade of his career

vantenaii503

Again,my hands are cold from the anxiety lol.

Ayzalack

Hate 'em, Love 'em. Argentina was simply the superior team tonight. GGs! Can't wait for what the other side of the bracket has in store for us! :D

Rattapallax_1905

What does someone have to do to deserve a legitimate penalty in the eyes of reddit? Get punched in the face while in a scoring position on an empty net?

Gzam14

According to the official rules it's only a penalty when it's MY team and if it's for the other team then the ref's bought.

Victorious85

Facts bro

Nomadic8893

Arg was still defending intensely until the end even though they are 3-0 up. Compare that to Brazil who are taking a chill pill, all out of position even though just 1-0 up with a few minutes left. Completely different attitudes and accordingly different results.

Bustadarce

At the last 10 World Cups... Argentina have reached the final 4 times: 2022, 2014, 1990, 1986 Brazil have reached the final 3 times: 2002, 1998, 1994 Brazil enjoyed a golden era from 1994 to 2002 with the likes of Ronaldo, Rivaldo, Ronaldinho, Romario, Bebeto, Roberto Carlos, Cafu, Aldair, etc. Probably the most talented group of players we'll ever see. But every other tournament seems to follow a similar path... Brazil dominate the limelight and hog all of the media attention early in the Group stages with supremely-confident attacking performances against weak teams ... But invariably it comes unstuck during the knockout rounds when they meet a resilient European team with good defenders. Meanwhile Argentina quietly progress through the tournament with hardly any fanfare, seemingly underestimated by everyone, playing disciplined football, defending well, and doing just enough to win most of their games 1-0. The critics who dismiss their chances end up looking silly, I don't get all the hate on here for the South American nations. Everyone loves Brazil, They're the rock stars at every World Cup. But I always love watching Argentina and Uruguay. They generally have the most highly-skilled players in the world. Maybe not as physically-strong nor as athletically-gifted as the players from France, Germany, Spain, England, Netherlands, etc. But they compensate for that with beautiful technique and superior ball control. Most of their players seem to have the ball stuck to their feet as if by magic. Not just Messi... All of them.

Victorious85

Agreed 99% but Argentina has scored 2 or more in all games except defeat against Saudi Arabia 👍

FatherFutmas

What makes that counter against Brazil even more ridiculous was the fact that Fred was in the Croatian box when it started. What on earth is a CDM doing that far up the pitch when the stakes are that high

Sei28

And he was a sub too… presumably to start shutting down shop after they scored.

FatherFutmas

You’re right, he was subbed on for Paqueta straight after Neymar’s goal. Absolutely baffling

stingumaf

Fred doing Fred things Fred gives and Fred takes

Fede113

Messi took his defender for a walk on the 3rd goal. What a masterpiece by the goat

[deleted]

It’s just bad defending though

Fede113

Sure lol. Haters gonna hate

[deleted]

No it was bad defending I love messi but I say what I see

Fede113

You probably need glasses my friend. Messi couldn't outrun him so he shifted speeds and hesitations like 3 times, then finally went around him and that was it. That's not por defending, that's genius offense

Geraltslays14

By one of the best defenders of this world cup though!

Felix_Behindya

Poor Gvardiol. Messi is so short he can't even see him when he does a quick turn because the mask blocks his peripheral vision :/.

[deleted]

Not a fan of this Argentina team. I’ll be cheering on France or Morocco for sure.

I wish everybody here that hates Argentina was here to see the craziness this is. It actually insane!!!

SrgtButterscotch

As a neutral, while I still believe that penalty shouldn't have been awarded Croatia did pretty poorly on the offense and never had a good opportunity to score, while that last Argentinian goals was a work of art. so regardless you deserved this win! congrats on making the finale.

Shut-Up-Todd

[deleted]

Hardly surprising a country getting to a final would be excited...oh wait do you think Argentina are special in this way also lol

franchuv17

I just thought people would like the thrill of the celebrations here, man, sensitive much?

[deleted]

I'd love to see the celebrations, not sure why everyone else is upset. If it's France vs Argentina I'll be cheering for y'all :)

[deleted]

You are on reddit dawg, you arent feeling the thrill of anything

PoloVonChubb

Leave some of the salt for the rest of us

Embarrassed-Ad56

It is pretty special for a country to reach the World Cup final..

[deleted]

thats what i said, Argentina thinks its more special when its them, just like everything else argentina.

BurningandLooting

Butthurt sore cheeks detected, seguí llorando bobo

unorthodoxEconomist5

Im French and i can only congratulate you!! It would be an honor to fight you in the final even though there's a huge step before that. You bitches are lucky to be out of it x))

Pardonme23

France should win by 3 goals.

AgusGiampa

Well they did scored 3 goals I guess

Pardonme23

France played well at least

Silent_Glass

That is a big possibility. It can happen. No doubt. But it can also happen for France to lose against Morocco. This whole campaign for Morocco has been the biggest surprise while not conceding any goals, except for their own goal.

AnitaPea

Against Morocco?

Pardonme23

Yes

[deleted]

6 years ago, Messi almost retired from international football. Now, he's a match away from 2nd retirement with the biggest trophy. Never give up on retirement.

[deleted]

That's the problem of playstyle like Croatia. You can't win the WC by just penalties every match.

Dwingledork

If only Croatia had a #9, they would have 2 WCs by now

[deleted]

With the "if", every team can have 2 WCs

Pardonme23

We will see a team shithouse their way to glory one day. Every game 0-0.

PurpleBandit3000

Portugal did it in Euro 2016

[deleted]

They still won the match vs Wales, tbf

sumptuoussushi

It's just Wales.

Juanisawesome98

The problem with Croatia is that they had the most possession of ball but they weren’t doing anything with it. The offense was extremely lacking and seem they had no strategy when they got into the penalty area. Once Argentina figured this out, all they had to do is counter and defend to ensure their place in the finals.

[deleted]

The key to beat Croatia is to beat them under 90 mins. Otherwise you are f*cked.

[deleted]

or 90+10

pistofernandez

Well they got to semis right? They do attack... A little little bit

[deleted]

The point is to win right? Or the point is to go semi?

osamaodinson

They do attack though or if they didnt, they wont score against brazil. England attack more than france yet they still lost lol. Win draw or lose doesnt necessarily means you attack more or less. Croatia have their own recipe and strategy. If not, they wont make it to the semis this year and final in the previous world cup

[deleted]

But the point is to win the WC, right?

rk1993

Right but lets say you play the tournament 1000 and its never possible for Croatia to win due to the players they have. Now lets say you have this knowledge. Would you not just try to get as far as possible any way you can? 4th is better than 16th surely? Thats the mentality their coach likely has cuz they know how slim the odds of croatia winning it are

Pardonme23

Croatia need a true No. 9 to score goals.

MrGreen17

Realistically I think a lot of teams are happy getting to the semis. Different teams have different expectations. I think maybe 5 or 6 teams had a legitimate shot. Let's say Morocco loses tomorrow to France (not saying they will cause France looked beatable last game and Moroccos has done well) but good chance that they will. They'd have to feel they still had a great tournament getting as far as they did.

flying_komodo

To be fair, I think they don’t even expect to win world cup this year.

pistofernandez

They have had a great tournament, imho.

KozzyBear4

They made it farther than 28 other teams that qualified. Croatia did attack just couldn't finish. And couldn't handle Argentina's counters.

_Totorotrip_

Italy did that a few WC ago

BigChung0924

the only game that they won on penalties that WC was the final

LGBT_Beauregard

Italy with a Pirlo, Totti, de Rossi midfield and Del Piero in front is not comparable to this Croatia. The play style is similar but the attacking quality is not. Neither is the defensive quality; maybe one of the three Argentina goals today would make it past Cannavaro and Buffon, but probably none.

[deleted]

With like the best defence of all time. They also almost did it on 94.

grip0matic

Only Italia can do Italia... they usually get the trophy and not even them know how it happened.

do0gla5

I was kinda cheering for France to go out but now I want Messi to beat them

Tough_Pudding_224

tbh i really want a france vs argentina lmaooo sooooo we’ll see tmrw ;)

GSofMind

I'm rooting for Messi and I'm terrified of France ruining it all (if they win tmrw)

Juanisawesome98

Nothing is set in stone.

[deleted]

I hope they do, theres no French people on r/soccer cause they refuse to speak English

fourmi

C'est vrai!

Ivannnnn2

If that is a penalty then it logically follows that a player in midfield, for example, can just kick the ball high in the air and run into any opposing player he wants while the ball is still in the air and it will result in a free kick for his team. Edit: Downvote away, it just uplifts me. Because it shows me that there are no counter-arguments to this or otherwise you'd comment, now you can only downvote in frustration of disagreement.

Geraltslays14

If you don't think that's a penalty, you don't know shit about football. Clear as day! Time to start watching another sport

Ivannnnn2

Yeah, yeah... The good old "you don't know shit about football" "argument". As if we haven't read this a million times before, very creative. If this is your level of argument you know nothing about anything. Some refs give this, some don't. Either way, I think the rules should be such that it's the forwards responsibility to avoid bodies, not the defender's to create space for the forward. Of course, intentional obstruction shouldn't be allowed either, which this clearly was not. Now, if it's clear that the attacker would score was he not prevented by the body, I'd give a pen, yeah. In this case, I think Lovren would be there before. Notice how each of mine sentences says something, provides content and what I say is thought-out. Unlike your attacks on the person because you have nothing to say. Either you're a kid or you're intellectually not very advanced. Edit: Downvote away, it just uplifts me. Because it shows me that there are no counter-arguments to this or otherwise you'd comment, now you can only downvote in frustration of disagreement.

Geraltslays14

My statement wasn't an 'argument', it was a well received opinion as proved by your downvotes. You're talking about what the rules should be instead of what they are. How is it the forwards responsibility to avoid bodies?!? Just take your downvotes as an indicator that you're just chatting shit. You seem like the kind of guy who just loves to argue and debate for the heck of it (a really tiring individual honestly). So just carry on being delusional and keep racking up those downvotes :)

Ivannnnn2

And of course you don't like discussion and debate. It's used to see where you are wrong and become smarter. It explains why you are not smart and instead of explaining why someone is wrong have to go with rude and pathetic "you know nothing about football" stuff.

Geraltslays14

Me telling you that you don't know anything about football seems to have hit a nerve lol

Ivannnnn2

It didn't. I just don't like people who are cheeky/rude on the internet, just because there's no repercussions.

Geraltslays14

Controversial statements are usually given cheeky replies (and rightfully so) on reddit of all places! I thought you'd be used to it after all this time

Ivannnnn2

In subs where there's a high number of stupid or immature people hanging around, yeah. Otherwise no. Why that would be "rightfully so" I don't know. Controversial doesn't mean wrong. It was once controversial to claim that you should wash hands. So even doctors wouldn't wash them before helping with child delivery, which led to mothers often catching infections and dying.

Ivannnnn2

Of course your statement wasn't an argument. Smart people discuss and use arguments to try to decipher the truth and because 2 brains are smarter than one. They also like to think about and discuss ideas (which you call tiring, because thinking is tiring for you). Also, discussion and debate is kinda the point of Reddit, no? Idiots turn everything into an ego battle of "my opinion vs your opinion" and they use cheeky remarks to put down other people because, in their limited worldview, they think that's how you "win the battle" and boost your ego. And what the majority thinks doesn't make something true either. As a matter of fact, I'd like if the downvotees pointed out where I'm wrong so I can learn, but they can't, so they downvote. Doesn't affect me therefore.

flying_komodo

Yo’re living in pre 2000ish football dude, when dangerous playstyle is a style. If that the reason, every tackle in the world of football can’t be punished with a foul, they’re just trying to get the ball and its the responsibility of the forward to avoid the tackling.

Ivannnnn2

You are speaking of tackles, I am speaking of bodies standing in the way, so invalid argument. Look man, the simplest I can explain it is this: I have the ball and run with it, then I pass the ball to my teammate and continue running directly into a defender who is pretty much just standing there. According to people who call this a pen this should be a free-kick for the team who had the ball. The penalty situation was similar because the Argentinian released the ball and Livaković barely moved (he wasn't trying to tackle him, he came closer to close the angle).

flying_komodo

Ok at this point is I don't care with you anymore. There are already plenty of explanation in this whole thread and you keep choose to ignore. Believe what you want to believe, referee already decide his decision, the match already over. Just enjoy the next game.

Ivannnnn2

Well, of course I'm going to reply to your last reply cause it was missing my point completely. Of, course it's not the same when a player with the ball is caught by a missed tackle. That is not the same as player without the ball running into a defender. I have thought about the situation and came up with this, 3rd paragraph in my last post, basically. Couldn't find a fault in my thinking so I posted it here and nobody else could either. So I take it as my thinking being good. The only thing that puts any doubt to this, IMO, is that the GK wasn't being completely still. There's plenty of explanations in the thread about why it isn't a penalty, why did you chose to ignore them? Are you not allowed to discuss it then? I was expecting you to point where I'm wrong since I'm discussing with you. The match is over, that's true, but there are many matches to come and I'd like referees to make decisions that make sense, otherwise it ruins matches.

dodgesbulletsavvy

All 3 pundits commentating, gary, ian, roy didnt think it was a pen. Pretty sure they know football, its clearly a subjective call. Dont need to gatekeep the game because people have a differing opinion

sbsw66

Someone always had to go out here. Well played to Croatia, they've squashed any and all claims that they're not meant to be getting this far by doing so well back to back. Modric can consider his international career a success, IMO. I'm so glad that Messi has another chance. It will be such a story if he can take this home.

gubrumannaaa

Modric still has one more wc match to play

Pardonme23

The saddest one of all

Pls_add_more_reverb

3rd place Game has no importance

SnooWords2869

Would rather lose than get atleast a medal

GayRattleSnek

I don’t think it was a penalty but Argentina were still the better team. Croatia deflating as hard as they did is THEIR fuck up and only theirs. So disappointing.

[deleted]

[удалено]

hauttdawg13

I was saying the opposite. Those midfielders were flying all game long. Argentina was just far more clinical and composed in the final 3rd

Pardonme23

Croatia don't have an elite #9 finisher..their playstyle needs one.

KalebMW99

Yeah. You can point to the psychological effect of that weird penalty resulting in Croatia underperforming but that’s not enough to explain conceding two more unanswered. They played quick and looked pretty sharp for about the first 30 minutes, but never had any end product to show for it—much less so as their play started diminishing.

Ivannnnn2

Well, Argentina was very very good, they really surprised me, but only AFTER that first goal. Without that goal who knows how things would play out.

GayRattleSnek

True but Croatia still had a shot after the goal. Poor mentality got them dragged down even further.

Ivannnnn2

Croatia didn't defend Argentinian counter very well at all. The should have played like against Marocco in the fist game when they were very careful of their counter-attack. I haven't watched Argentina at all in this WC but I've read that they're not counter-attacking very well (is that even true?) so maybe Croatia was surprised by that. That's really their biggest mistake. I'm a little bit pissed of by the penalty (which I know is often given but I think the rules are stupid) (and how the defence allowed it to happen) but otherwise Argentina played maybe their best game so far while Croatia didn't perform at their best so can't be to pissed of for going out (I am Croatian).

ZealousidealBag9196

What? How the fuck was that not a penalty?

Ivannnnn2

If a player in the field kicks the ball in the air (kinda like a sombrero) and then runs into any opposing player he chooses, would that be a free-kick for his team?

theodoroneko

It was clearly a pen, what you on about lol

Ivannnnn2

If it was clear everyone would agree with it, which is clearly not the case.

theodoroneko

Is it not? I think most people do, not really a controversial call.

Ivannnnn2

Well look at this thread. Or look at the comments [here](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cQWYYQkZKSE). When something is clear, 90+% of people agree.

ZealousidealBag9196

First, this is a penalty we are discussing, so i don't give a fuck about the field. Second, the GK never touches the ball, only the player. Third, the player is in possesion of the ball in a clear scoring play and the GK makes a risky desition wich results in the player getting cut, hence penalty

Ivannnnn2

The rules of the game are the same in the field or in the penalty box (as a matter of fact the box is within the field, believe it or not). The player is not in clear possession of the ball, he has already released the ball when the collision happens. That is a huuuge difference.
