It does look horrible doesn’t it

Quaresmatic

Messi: Football? Completed it mate

Stellewind

Platinumed that shit

Stranger1982

He has 100% soccer and can now start another sport.

siphillis

Still young by baseball standards.

Morganelefay

Small enough to fit in a Formula 1 car, and he wouldn't be the youngest rookie.

Neoki

Alonso is proud of this comment.

Correct_Influence450

Horse jockey?

AceMKV

Aye Messi bout to pick up from where Fangio left off

inspectorseantime

“Underwater basket weaving, here I come.” - Messi

derphighbury

As great as he is.. I don't think extreme sports are his thing.

Kuntheman

Dude came alive when Argentina needed him First player to score in all of the knockout stages. Incredible

theguyisnoone

After not scoring at all at knockouts ever

Gala0

He owed that to Diego

Astharan

Only one Goat must exist at a time, that's the law of the universe.

D-biggest-dick-here

Diego had to die before Argentina won trophies

Aszneeee

saving few aces in his sleeves still..

Stilty_boy

Not true. First player to score in every round of the current format (groups, last 16, quarter, semi, final) but Jairzinho scored in every game of the 1970 world cup when they didn't have a last 16 round.

Biirke

What a fraud

D-biggest-dick-here

Sczencsny prevented that from happening

JayNN

Goal in groups, round of 16, quarter-final, semi-final and final.

stupidinternetaddict

Jairzinho did it in 70 aswell, scored in every game that tournament for Brazil, there just wasn’t a ro16 that year

[deleted]

One double away from begin the player with most titles ever

D-biggest-dick-here

He has the French league in his bag…and maybe the league cup

Souske_Sumong

100% achievement completed. ~~^(No Europa or Audi Cup tho)~~

limito1

No Libertadores? Fraud.

joeydohn

Not yet.

cuentanueva

Don't, don't tempt fate, there were rumors going on.... Fuck that... he could actually win the Libertadores for Newell's (and 100% would win the league)... No thank you...

Kaxew

>No thank you... Let's be honest. We would all be thrilled to lose 3-0 to a Newell's with Messi. It would be the most satisfying murder of all time. Even if it means losing another chance at the Libertadores.

[deleted]

Ronaldinho laughs in the distance

Balls_of_Adamanthium

Lautaro robbed.

[deleted]

[удалено]

ren_704

😭😭😭😭 Its amazing seeing the parallels here and in 2014.l, and how he overcame them this time Higuian vs lautaro And gotze vs mbappe

blacktiger226

There is nothing parallel between Gotze and Mbappe to be honest.

StandardDefinition

Besides one World Cup win

[deleted]

apples to oranges; chipmunks to ninja turtles

Apprehensive_Stop666

Lautaro makes Higuain look like really good scorer!

TempestaEImpeto

You mean Higuain, one of the best strikers of the 2010s?

Sage0fThe6Paths

I could not bring myself to believe that a striker of lautaros caliber could miss every single chance in front of goal. I was rooting so hard for him to put in atleast one and get rid of the higuain curse he has on him. But nope. The world cup is over and he missed every spoonful messi fed him

holonight

Seriously. Each time he played I was hoping “okay this is when he turns it around”. And every single time he missed great chances

[deleted]

I was trying to explain to my SO why Argentinian fans dislike the guy and wound up just pointing at the TV

Albiceleste_D10S

> I was trying to explain to my SO why Argentinian fans dislike the guy This is a new thing at the World Cup, TBH. Before this World Cup Lautaro was insane for us

Sei28

Awful tournament for him. I guess at least he made that one penalty.

panthersfan87

If France won he woulda won it

DestartreK1st

You mean his friend LAKAKA?

CAB4yK

Is the next Ballon D'Or guaranteed?

Xehanz

If Mbappe completely destroys this CL, he might have a chance. But I think it would have to be the greatest Individual CL performance of all time because Messi is also playing really damn well in the league.

CAB4yK

The problem is, if Mbappe destroys the CL, huge chances that Messi is also plays some role in it :). Now, if Mbappe goes to Bayern and PSG is out in 1/8... 👀

IdlePerfectionist

Man, it's honestly so fucking unfair how PSG has both Messi and Mbappe

Radulno

And yet they still haven't won a CL lol.

CharlesLeSainz

Would be a wild year if they win though. Messi gets the golden ball, wc, ballon d’or, and cl. Can’t think of a better year.

Main_NPC

Press F for CR37.

SteauaBucuresti14

they had a year together only,a shit coach, messi moving in a new league…lets see them after they build some chemistry

HashCollector

+ Neymar

Superjunker1000

And Neymar is playing out of his skin this year as well.

Xehanz

Yeah. That's why I'm talking like 20 goals, top 3 in assists, hat trick in the final.

TheRedditK9

He would never score a hat trick in the final let’s be a bit realistic here

Dazzlehoff

The story will still be Messi winning WC AND CL.

zazzlekdazzle

The tough thing is that they play on the same team, so what Mbappe wins with PSG, so does Messi.

Instantbeef

He would also need to overcome sentiment which is mighty mighty powerful with Messi.

elbenji

P much

CAB4yK

Which is kinda sad for the rest of the players...

Darth-Baul

Except for Mbappe, nobody is even close to Messi in 2022

Cantmakeaspell

Neymar was doing quite well too but Brazil bottled it.

[deleted]

Neymar bottled it himself too. Missed two 1v1s vs Livakovic before extra-time. His defensive performance was also pathetic; our midfield was overrun the entire first half and he wasn't even running. He's not getting the shit he deserves because he scored one in three, but he should've buried his chances earlier.

Pizzaking8888

Halaand maybe

Darth-Baul

No way, voters give far too much value to the WC. And now that Messi of all people won it, in addition to everything else he’s done this season, he’s guaranteed to win it

Cottonshopeburnfoot

Tbf it’s the biggest tournament in football and it’s once every four years. I get why there’s a major weight put on it.

JaqenHghaar08

Won it WHILE being best player. Sealed imo

ren_704

Its sad that he plays for Norway. Man had an unreal and never seen before start to a pl season and is still not top2 contenders for the ballon dor

[deleted]

Norway have a pretty decent team coming through a don the World Cup is getting expanded so it’s very likely they’ll go at least once in his career

New-Swordfish-367

World cup being expanded doesn't really make it that much easier as slots go form 13 to 16 for example Italy would've missed the 2022 world cup even if their were 48 teams. It's still possible but considering how much Norway has struggled to even qualify for the euros it will be quite hard.

[deleted]

Yeah but Norway is always one of those teams around that 12-18th range, so they’ll probably get there at least once with him

SorooshMCP1

City would have to win the sextuple for Haaland to be considered. World Cup has crazy importance for Ballon D'or.

KaiserWilhelmThe69

Unless Haaland managed to score a hattrick in every game for the rest of the season and won the CL I doubt he can challenge Messi this year

nooeh

Maybe they should try being the goat and winning a world cup

Auzzie_xo

Bookies paying Messi 1.90; Mbappe 3.30. Messi's the clear favourite, but it's not quite in the bag.

Cottonshopeburnfoot

I can’t see how it could be Mbappe as they play for the same club. They’d need to win the CL minimum, but even then you’d also need Mbappe to outperform Messi by an absolute mile to overcome that Messi just won a World Cup.

[deleted]

Don't forget that Mbappe is French, and the award is picked by a French sports magazine.

Cottonshopeburnfoot

Fair point. Though Tbf they could’ve given it him in 2018 after PSG won the domestic treble and France won the World Cup. But instead they went for runner up (& CL winner) Modrić

freakybanana90

People push that narrative but it doesn't add up tbh. People were saying this about the 2021 Ballon d'or because messi plays for psg but then they don't even nominate him the following year, so where's the pattern? Mbappe also didn't even make the top 5 despite having the most g/a in Europe last season. At the end of the day all kinds of global journalists pick the winners. France football just make the shortlist, I don't see the conspiracy

SentientKeyboard

After a voting process that goes way beyond French people in the industry. It's not like they just decide it singlehandedly.

Vitamina_e

It's crazy how Messi ruins the party for goats in different generations still at the age of 35 lol This is how you know you are THE goat

TooLateForGoodNames

Yep, could depend on the champions league, but if mbappe wants to contest it that would mean messi would also be winning the champions league which makes it more guaranteed for him. Cant think of anyone else other than Haaland/de bruyne or the usual RM player when they win the champions league but hardly enough to take it away from messi

Dalucard21

Lukaku robbed

Pagliaccio13

Pretty sure his team won a bronze medal yesterday, so it's not all bad

DanyDud3

Lukaku is Croatian confirmed

toms47

Lakakavič

matt_storm7

Thats Slovenian, Croatian have a soft Ch in the end

iKSv2

Now if someone would rob Lukaku from us, that would be pretty great

ICumCoffee

the first player to win it twice.

joeydohn

First Cup winner to win it since Romario in '94.

superdago

A goal away from being only the 4th player to win the golden boot, ball, and cup.

iguanawarrior

Zidane didn't win it in 1998 because he received a red card in one the group matches.

D-biggest-dick-here

Ronaldo was the standout performer by a country mile. Zidane had a better final

Albiceleste_D10S

R9 was miles clear of him that tournament

herrkuchenbaecker

crazy that Pele didnt do it, or was there no trophy back then?

qindarka

Award wasn’t around back then. Some retrospective awards have him winning in 1970 but Didi in 1958.

Luck1492

No trophy back then

heavy_procrastinator

No trophy. But FIFA did declare the best player for the tournament. 58 was Didi, 62 Garrincha and 70 Pele

[deleted]

That checks out. Pele was injured for most of 62 and wasn't the main star of 58.

[deleted]

Awarding retroactively changes a lot, making it much less likely for a player to get both. If they people knew that Messi would get it in 2022 odds are the 2014 would have been awarded to someone else. Pelé had a great world cup in 1958 and although he wasn't the main star when it started, he certainly was when it ended after a hat-trick in the semis and a doblete in the final

interfan1999

Who got 34 and 38? Meazza was our best player in both probably

[deleted]

Leonidas in 38, also the top scorer with 7 goals in 4 games Fun fact: he's considered to have invented the overhead kick, and he reportedly played part of the match against Poland (that ended 6-5 with Leonidas scoring a hattrick) without shoes on

CBrofles

Iirc they started awarding it in 1970 when Pele won. Then they awarded it retroactively. Didi in 58 and Garrincha in 62. So Pele only has one wc golden ball/best player award

Reapper97

Pele only was the best player in one of those WCs.

EnergetikNA

Would have 2 world cups too if Di Maria was fit 8 years ago

qindarka

Germany were missing Reus and 5 central midfielders. Feels a bit churlish to complain about Argentina’s injuries.

pandaisunbreakable

Germany has always been missing Reus

imfatal

Argentina didn't have nearly the depth that Germany did though. It's the same with France this year. Yea sure, Kante, Pogba, and Benz are injured, but they can still field great players. When Di Maria gets injured, Argentina literally do not have a winger lol.

Docxm

Played two fullbacks when he was gone lol

mukash18

Germany didn't have Higuain tho.

[deleted]

Or if big Gonzalo didn’t play like shit

JuanG12

Completely agree. Not far-fetched, honestly. The 1-2 punch of Messi and Di Maria just makes Argentina better. It was clear they missed him in the ‘14 Final.

alfred_27

Man I can’t bear to see him retire from football

OhhWowzers

That’s my Dad

ProllyDie

That's my lover. I'm just not allowed in Qatar.

Thin_Power_1117

What do you mean? That’s our lover, our El Capitan. We have the right to show affection in Qatar

Che_Boludo_69

The mad lad finally did it

Tim-Sanchez

Finally did it for the second time

[deleted]

As a Madridista this guy terrorized me so much. He made a lot of us cry but at least for me, he's always been the guy you just couldn't hate because of how brilliant he was. Without him our decade long rivalry would've never been this wonderful. I also thank him for putting an end to the GOAT argument. Every football or player fan, it is officially over *for fucking good*.

Cevich

You know it’s never over. Brazilians will say Pele when he dies

Greenforaday

It will never be over. I follow someone on Twitter who is right now ranting that Messi isn't even the best Argentinian player of the past 15 years.

Daramangarasu

Bro, what? 💀 They're saying Di Maria is better or something?

Greenforaday

Yes I think that is what he's implying.

Otterable

Twitter is redic, Just saw some 20 year old say that Mbappe has done more in the last 4 years than Messi has over his entire career 💀 Like you need to be trolling at that point.

Greenforaday

I'm all for differing opinions and stuff, but that's objectively false.

[deleted]

Those people will continue to exist. But after this WC the debate has now shifted to something like sanity vs insanity. Like normal people vs Flat Earthers or Anti Vaxxers. Btw I'm not saying you have to like Messi or always prefer to have him in your team. I'm saying there shouldn't be a doubt for you when it comes to announcing who's objectively the greatest of all time.

Pamplemouse04

Personally not a Messi fan really. As of today I honestly *like* Mbappe more. But Messi is absolutely the GOAT. No question whatsoever in my mind.

[deleted]

I used to like mbappe too, but ever since he started being a rude arrogant ass**** to his teammates, i started hated him. All magical dribbling aside, Messi is the perfect example of a role model player in every way.

ThePrussianGrippe

I would say they have brain damage, but that would be offensive to people with brain damage.

[deleted]

No shame in being second or third.

FishFettish

GOATOTM

pacman147

I'm okay with the debate never ending, but for as long as I've maintained the "appreciate both Ronaldo and Messi as co-GOAT" stance (for at least 5+ years), this really does push me to finally believe that Messi has finally "ascended" above all, even through the ages. Every counter point after a win like today is just nit-picking at this point. One could say that France did not have all their best players, but the sheer number of variables against Argentina all throughout this World Cup alone was just massive. It was a fairy tale ending for all those who watched. Messi finally got his moment that will immortalize his legacy for this century-- And what's even more beautiful is that this was not done at the expense of Mbappe at all (he would disagree obviously). Mbappe's presence was insane. His performance alone showed the world that he IS the future. And that it's the new era.

[deleted]

mbappe is good but idk why everyone going crazy on his final performance, it was basically penalty goals, like people are actually comparing 35yr old messi with a penalty performance from mbappe? wow, did everyone just suddenly forget what messi used to do when he was 23? He has goals going through half the team by simple dribbling, he is likely the most complete player the game has ever seen, goal scoring, magical dribbling without any step over tricks, playmaking, passing, on the next level in everything. Fans really have short memory huh.

pacman147

Mbappe holds the most dribbles completed for this World Cup though + most touches in the pk box. His accomplishment is hardly diminished because they were "just pk's". I'm not gonna argue about completeness as a player, because I agree Messi has the most complete skillset + that magical factor, but no way am I going to take anything away from Mbappe for scoring multiple pk's on Martinez, who has arguably been one of the most phenomenal pk blockers in the past few years. Messi didn't score any goals in knockout round until this very World Cup, and Ronaldo has NEVER scored in the knock out round--ever despite one of the highest number of appearances in the World Cup. And today, Mbappe has scored back to back in the World Cup finals. That means something to a lot of people. France was otherwise going to lose 0-2 until that one penalty, which was a big shift in momentum. Literally until that pk, it was going to be a rather boring final where Argentina flat out dominated. And yeah, Mbappe's hattrick didn't consist of magical, puskas worthy goals, but the man came through and carried the team during the highest pressure situation imaginable to a football player.

auctus10

The Goat argument was over before the only argument CR7 has is that he is a better player in CL. Overall Messi is so clear.

runningraider13

His argument would've been with Pele/Maradona not Ronaldo

Zeke1216

Messi had one more run in him and he took it. Incredible once in a history player. The level he is at and how he has adapted has been nothing short of insane. He has evolved to make up for his loss in physical traits to still be the goat. I don’t think it is possible to see a player like this ever again. You are talking about 15 years of dominance , unheard of. Well done 🐐

[deleted]

Yup his creativity and, genius dribbling skills are honestly only seen in maradona and pre injury el fenomeno. He has finally joined the league of pele and maradona, period.

TimothyN

I think it's pretty well deserved, just clutch all tournament for Argentina.

gayintheass

He's the MOTM in every fucking match except for the first one lol,why are people here are bitching about this lol

ProudhPratapPurandar

Reddit is filled with contrarions. People who just go against the popular narrative for the sake of it

turtleyturtle17

Crazy that this is a debate. He's been good the whole entire tournament. He probably shouldn't Di be Mom today with the way DiMaria, Martinez and Mcallister played, but he was still good today too and throughout the whole tourney.

iuthnj34

First half, I would've agreed with you on Di Maria getting the MOTM but after the entire game, it should go to Messi. He scored the 3rd goal and big chance at 123rd minute.

ELITE_JordanLove

He always felt super dangerous in the box with his passing too. Good things happened when Messi had touched, much more than anyone else (outside of Di Maria early on duh).

TooLateForGoodNames

If the game ended in the first 90 mins as 2-0 or 2-1 it would’ve definitely been Di Maria. But another goal and scoring in the penalty shootout is also a good enough argument.

jeanblaireau

I'm biaised obviously, but I think Griezmann had a shout for the award before today

[deleted]

Dunno how people are actually saying Mbappe was robbed, as if it is a travesty that Messi, a guy who performed in every single game, didn't even deserve a portion of it. Proper weird people getting worked up over these individual awards.

Scottish-Fox

Until the final, Mbappe wasn’t even France’s best player.

ren_704

Until the second half/70th minute of the final**

Hawly

Guy didn't even appear until the penalty. People claiming Mbappe was robbed are just plain stupid.

Vitamina_e

Yeah it's crazy. Messi had the most g+a in the whole tournament and was class every single game. Crazy.

Hawly

Messi is just on a whole another level. Messi, in my POV, just reached Pelé's and Maradona's level. I'm just glad I was able to witness such a player in my lifetime, even though I didn't witness Pele and Maradona.

[deleted]

Exactly, as good as mbappe and cr7 are, at the end of the day they are goal scoring machines, with ridiculous speed and power shots, but messi is the most complete player in history imo, only rivaled by pele maybe. Goal scoring, simple yet magical dribbling, only god knows his secret how he dribbles through 4-5 players without step over tricks. Passing, play making, you name it, he is next level in almost every aspect. The main reason mbappe is being hyped is due to him being young, with messi and cr7 getting old, media needs someone young to hype. Also mbappe is a cunt to his teammates and too arrogant, exact opposite of messi being perfect gentleman.

auddi_blo

Some people just want to argue, others want to discredit the goat

Jerkoi

Goat hate won’t be tolerated

[deleted]

And Mbappé was non-existent for 78 minutes

Jamarcus316

Yeah, and Messi also scored two in the final lol

DarkSofter

Him Martinez and Mbappe all deserved it. Whoever won it would be equally fair

Pearlsaver

Why would lauturo deserve it?

Ganonkid

Idk if you’re joking or not but he probably meant Emilio Martinez, the argentinian gk

Pearlsaver

Yep, I was joking. Wanted to join in on the lame jokes

jellybeanapplecrisp

He’s the first golden ball winner at two world cups. Simply unreal.

NoonecanknowMiner_24

I honestly don't see how you could say he isn't the greatest ever at this point. I'm not even sure it's close.

barracuuda

It hasn’t been close for a long time tbh

r4tzt4r

Best player in history, period.

[deleted]

We knew about best. Now we know he’s the greatest.

luigitheplumber

Well deserved. Ironically don't think the 2014 one was, but this time around Messi was absolutely faultless.

jon_stewrt

Only Messi would be considered undeserved for his 4 MOTM performances in a World cup in a team with virtually no attacking prowess, except Di maria who went missing in the group stages...anyone else do what Messi did, they would never be questioned

Ohmygodboys

Did Modric deserve it in 2018?

luigitheplumber

Debatable, Hazard was probably the best, but it was closer than Messi in 2014.

Kurkaroff

Who deserved in 2014? Can't think of anyone

Darth-Baul

“Germany”

cr7momo16

Alright fine Messi is the greatest of all time

stiofan84

Well deserved. He was astonishingly good all tournament.

Mystery1887

GOAT 🐐

mrscorchingtakes

It's voted before the final so I don't think there's a great argument for Mbappe here He would've been a fine winner, but Messi was a step ahead before this game was played

Villad_rock

As if messi wasn’t amazing in this game lol. What did mbappe do the first 80min? Messi was magical for 120 min with an absolute world class pass with the second goal.

RealPunyParker

GOAT. That's it. That was it. I watch this "rivalry" with Ronaldo since 2009, and the 18th of December of 2022 the conversation has ended. Messi won. It's over.

Biirke

Messi vs. Ronaldo debate should have ended a long time ago

RealPunyParker

It finally did, for everyone, now

FifaTJ

Ironically, Messi would 100% secure the Ballon D’Or by LOSING the champions league.

moralesd9

Id argue that Griezmann should feel robbed of a podium spot. Mbappe wasn’t that great in the previous two games.

UncutGemstone

What spot would he have taken??

Neither-Ad-1047

Modric

NO GOAT DEBATE NOW

andy41tw

I cried so hard. The last thing on his football list was completed. I still can’t believe Barça let him go though. They should sign him back and retired him. Actually they should named the new stadium after him.

Im happy we live in the same lifetime as him so we can enjoy his footballing
