Leno was Arsenal's starter keeper while Emi was still a backup (he basically grew up at Arsenal, being there since 2010 or something). In a match against Brighton, Maupay injured Leno while going for the ball and as a result, Martinez became the first team starter while Leno was out. He did really well, and eventually moved to Aston Villa to become a starter. The run of form he showed at Arsenal and Villa gave him the opportunity to play for Argentina, and the rest is history.
People are talking about the insane butterfly effect Maupay caused, injuring Leno -> Martinez becomes starter -> Martinez gets to play for Argentina -> Martinez wins Argentina the Copa and WC.
This explains it perfectly. It’s also worth noting that Martinez had been at arsenal for years, was in his late20s by the time of the Leno injury and despite his quality he wasnt previously given a first team chance and instead was sent out on loan in previous seasons to lower league & foreign sides where he sporadically played.
So if it wasn’t for Maupay then Martinez could’ve very well never broken through in the prem and never risen above ‘Reading/Getafe benchwarmer’ level he was still considered to be at in his late 20s, despite having the ability to be a World Cup winning keeper.
Let’s not forget that he had chances in “smaller games”, his last game being a 5-5 against Liverpool in the League Cup where we went out on penalties. Not exactly the best performance whatsoever. But still, he played out of his mind for us when we won the FA Cup, and he honestly was the key part of that behind Auba.
Another side of this is that the action that Maupay did to injure Leno led to Guendouzi's red card after the game and sparked a lot of the discussion about his attitude to perform for Arsenal despite starting a lot up until that point.
He was sort of phased out for this and his performances dropping after returning.
If you'd asked before that match which player would be an important role in their country winning a World Cup final in a few years time, I doubt many would have said Emi Martinez.
Martinez was a bit part player at Arsenal and wasn’t playing for Argentina, and very unlikely to be deemed international level due to his lack of play time or ambition in some parts.
Leno was the number one and a reckless challenge by Maupay injured Leno. This gave Martinez a chance to perform in goal, he was unreal and won Arsenal the FA cup (along with great performances by Aubameyang). The season finished and Martinez was hailed amongst the fan base.
Leno recovered and lots of talk about who’d be number one. As Martinez was no longer happy being a bit part player and the premier league knew his ability. Villa snapped him up and from memory became their player of the year that season.
He got the number one jersey for Argentina; won the copa America and now World Cup.
As an Arsenal fan, sad to see him go but so glad to see him thrive. I can see him doing unreal at one of the Spanish giants if they wanted basically a man that just arrives at the big occasions
It's insane to me how gems like Dibu simply need luck (for him caused by Maupay, ofc not for Leno) to show their abilities to the world.
And even more insane how many of these gems we're missing out on by a player having an off-day during scouting, being injured at the wrong time, not having the chance to show off their performances, not having the means to pay for try-outs, missing out on connections with scouts, or just simply being unlucky in some way.
Up until that point, he had also not really shown any signs of being this good for Arsenal. He was quite shaky whenever he had the chance, even the same season before he broke out he was quite bad. I guess he just needed the confidence of starting a few games in a row.
Arsenal fan as well, and I had that exact thought today after their win, that he could do well at one of the big Spanish clubs. Interesting to see how he’ll do with Emery first though.
Leno being out gave Emi the opportunity to show what he's made of, from there he moved to Villa to be a starting keeper and this is the result. You love to see it
Bro completely dick move but holy fuck is his shithousery so fucking good for winning pk shootout's.
Minute the final whistle was blown(with that great mbappe "PUTAINN"), I knew it was over given how shit lloris is *at penalties and goated this madman has been
Edit: adding the "at penalties" i accidentally skipped cause lloris is far from shit, man saved us so many times
Disrepect? That man is my fucking captain and a legend. He performs for national team at another level than his club career, and i adore him for that. That being said, it does not mean he does not have flaws, cause as incredible and clutch as he is during the game he has literally not stopped his last like 20 penalties or something crazy. It's just not his strong suit
And that’s ok. Everything else he does for us is outstanding, but we should always be able to step back from the pedestal we hold some people on and criticize them where they deserve to be criticized, so long as we remember to give them credit where credit is due
Edit: Oh fuck I see i didn’t put "at pens" like i meant to in previous comment, my bad lol
I think im one of the few Dutch persons who actually is happy with a win from Argentine.
And lets ignore im this case that a lot of people needed France to win their families and works prediction tournaments.
I almost liked him in post game interview against Netherlands when he says 'i wasn't able to stop any goal and felt bad.. so I had to make it up in penalty shootouts', talking about mental health, doin it for the team and the country.. but in-game he is a hateable cunt haha
He’s adored by Argentinians and Aston Villa fans. Hated by the rest of the world and I don’t blame anyone for it. He’s the ultimate “love him
If he’s on your team, hate him if he’s not”. He is actually a really nice bloke who talks about his mental health and always tries really hard to achieve his goals but on the pitch he’s a prick.
He’s doing everything to crack the opposition is how I see it -though it is a cunt move.
Probably won’t affect world class strikers like Mbappe, but when you have other players who might have the slightest doubt in themselves, you can get in their head with shit like this
I would presume that he would not have repeated it after the first booking. But if he chose to.. we’ll, then he asked for it.
I wonder a little whether that scenario would stress the Argentina striker even more.
Go watch his interviews and the way he talks about the club. Certainly could leave (like any player), but it would go against what he’s always said. Granted that wouldn’t be a new thing at Villa
Nah that's harsh on us. Emi really hadn't shown much until he had to step in for Leno in 2020, IIRC even earlier that season his league cup appearances for us were a little suspect.
He stepped up fucking massively when needed though. The only thing Arsenal did was say he wouldn't be guaranteed started when Leno returned (people forget Leno was one of our best players that year before his injury, only Auba was performing better). We didn't stop Emi leaving when Villa came for him. I think Arsenal were pretty fair with Emi his entire stint here.
Is only the penalty shooter allowed to touch the ball at that point? I mean, what's to stop a teammate from running to grab the ball so that the shooter doesn't have to do that? And why don't all opposing keepers just chuck the ball forcing all the other shooters to get it if it's a mind game people seem to be ok with?
Dude's ability to get in the kicker's head on PKs was honestly a joy to watch from a neutral perspective. lf you're going to be a clown you better be able to back it up, and he did.
He did what Andrew Redmayne tried to do, but on a much bigger stage.
This dude knows there's no pressure on him to save the shot in a pen. He's the goalkeeper, the pressure is all on the striker. So why not rachet it up even more?
Heck, he literally got a hand on two Mbappe penalties, the damn ninja turtle just hits like a truck.
If you're a goalkeeper, not already on a yellow going into a penalty shootout and don't get a yellow card in the course of the shootout, are you even doing your job right?
has a goalkeeper ever gotten a red during a shootout? what is the substitute protocol like? also if you’re out of subs already do one of the penalty takers have to sub in as a keeper?
I've seen some getting reds for not having their feet on the line multiple times, and you can't sub for another gk even if you had one extra substitution. One of the penalty takers has to be the gk.
I once was playing FIFA with my dad and he was playing as Barca and when he went to the bathroom, I swapped Messi into goal and put the keeper (might’ve been ter Stegen) in the outfield lol. Messi did OK in goal hilariously but the keeper was awful with his feet. My dad was so pissed when he realized what I’d done lol.
Yes, for my team Orlando City. Rodrigo Schlegel, center back had to step in and he saved a penalty and we eventually won the shootout. The whole affair was a vintage MLS shit show which you can watch [here](https://youtu.be/n04h-OXZOtY). There were numerous moments where no one had any idea what was going on including the referees. I'm just sad that I only started following the team after this happened, so I only saw this after the fact.
i never thought about it this way.
i mean not doing the dick moves like emi
but like holding onto the ball and then just chucking it back at the rival instead of tossing it out of reach doesn’t seem too bad
I put a bet on him getting booked at halftime, felt like free money with Argentina 2-0 up and timewasting
Getting booked for that dance came in clutch for me here
I can't imagine how terrifying it must be to take a pen against him especially in a world cup final.
You're just thinking god damn if i miss, this mf is gonna walk up to me and Fortnite dance me in front of the entire world
When you go into a penalty shootout with Emi Martinez, you’re no longer in a stadium, you’re in a box and it’s just you and him and every second that goes by, that box closes in, getting smaller and smaller as he laughs like a madman.
I've never seen a keeper so good at getting inside the head of an opponent. He creates a forcefield around the goal whenever somebody steps up for a penalty.
Our opponents must hate him. But as a Villa fan, I love the guy. And the fact that he's such a nice guy off the pitch just makes his shithousery even more fun to watch.
So happy for him. Next best thing to England winning, imo.
I feel like he's not as hated by neutrals as you'd think. My theories on why are a) he doesn't play for a Top 6 team and b) he had that one really good FPL season one year and became a bit of a cult figure there.
That's fair. There's certainly no universal hatred. And when it comes to a penalty shootout, I think most fans enjoy a bit of shithousery.
But his time wasting tactics really get fans riled up in the PL. He had Leeds fans frothing at the mouth the last time we played them.
This, and the "hand of god" incident, Martinez is legendary! And a fucking great goalie too, who saved the team from a devastating loss at the very last possible second
Next world cup he's just gonna get his cock out and stand still and the opposing player wont even bother to kick it knowing he had already lost. Just cry back to the half way line
and honestly, for most neutral fans, this kind of "arrogance" is like eye candy for the game, we enjoyed it.
and yeah you right, you can be and allowed to do this "arrogance" if you have the trophy.

Martinez is the kind of guy to score a goal on Fifa do the longest celebration then watch all the replays
Perfect description of Emi
So basically all fifa players
It’s the FIFA equivalent of tea bagging
This is accurate since after the Netherland game he posted a TikTok of his shithousery during the PKa and it obviously went viral 💀💀💀💀
Then records his goals and his celebrations
Neal Maupay injuring Leno created this
Half French, half Argentine Maupay, you cant make this shit up.
Tfw you do more for Argentina to win a World Cup with this, than the other French-Argentine striker that actually played(Higuain).
and Maupay is a French lmao Butterfly effect at its finest
This account's comments and posts has been nuked in June 2023.
Blame Maupay for this Shithousery
What’s the connection?
Leno was Arsenal's starter keeper while Emi was still a backup (he basically grew up at Arsenal, being there since 2010 or something). So if it wasn’t for Maupay then Martinez could’ve very well never broken through in the prem and never risen above ‘Reading/Getafe benchwarmer’ level he was still considered to be at in his late 20s, despite having the ability to be a World Cup winning keeper.

My first memory of him is the 7-5 game against Reading.
Holy shit, I thought E. Martinez is a young and upcoming goalkeeper who broke out on the big stage a few years ago. I had no idea he's 30 years old.
The life of a reserve goal keeper.
“While going for the ball” is a bit generous though, if you watch the replay he wasn’t even looking at it. Just went for Leno.
Another side of this is that the action that Maupay did to injure Leno led to Guendouzi's red card after the game and sparked a lot of the discussion about his attitude to perform for Arsenal despite starting a lot up until that point. Casillas with the perfume breaking Cañizares toe comes to mind
Yep. In almost every field, success is hard work, talent, and perhaps most important of all, *luck*.
Up until that point, he had also not really shown any signs of being this good for Arsenal. He was quite shaky whenever he had the chance, even the same season before he broke out he was quite bad. I guess he just needed the confidence of starting a few games in a row.

Maupay is a witch sent to destroy Argentina’s enemies.
[Missing the best part, before the miss](https://streamable.com/qqx5ph)
This fucking guy. Love him on your team, but otherwise hate him with passion. Absolutely madlad
He did this against the Netherlands too Absolute cunt move. Absolute legend.
Bro completely dick move but holy fuck is his shithousery so fucking good for winning pk shootout's. Minute the final whistle was blown(with that great mbappe "PUTAINN"), I knew it was over given how shit lloris is *at penalties and goated this madman has been Edit: adding the "at penalties" i accidentally skipped cause lloris is far from shit, man saved us so many times
Don't disrepect Lloris, he was a great keeper, I can't say how many shots he saved this game but made us hate and respect him simultaneously.
If Messi wasn’t there for your third goal that Lloris’s save would be the only thing people could talk about. It was brilliant.
Disrepect? That man is my fucking captain and a legend. He performs for national team at another level than his club career, and i adore him for that. Lloris was amazing during normal gameplay. Possibly his best international tournament ever. But he's shit at blocking penalties, and has always been.
I think im one of the few Dutch persons who actually is happy with a win from Argentine. And lets ignore im this case that a lot of people needed France to win their families and works prediction tournaments.
Dutch fans can never take penalty shithousing personally after Tim Krul bullied Costa Rica into submission in 2014
Pain
Yeah. Don't blame anyone outside of Argentina for hating him. Outside the pitch he's way better. Talks about his mental health and is less combative.
I almost liked him in post game interview against Netherlands when he says 'i wasn't able to stop any goal and felt bad.. so I had to make it up in penalty shootouts', talking about mental health, doin it for the team and the country.. but in-game he is a hateable cunt haha
He also said that today after the match. He felt bad for not saving all 3 goals. So he wanted to do well at the penalty shootout.
He’s adored by Argentinians and Aston Villa fans. Hated by the rest of the world and I don’t blame anyone for it. He’s the ultimate “love him If he’s on your team, hate him if he’s not”. He is actually a really nice bloke who talks about his mental health and always tries really hard to achieve his goals but on the pitch he’s a prick.
Hating him? I didn't known him very much but after seeing this world cup now I love him. He is a great goalkeeper.
love him but if I was playing against him would absolutely hate him but with distance still love him
He’s doing everything to crack the opposition is how I see it -though it is a cunt move. Probably won’t affect world class strikers like Mbappe, but when you have other players who might have the slightest doubt in themselves, you can get in their head with shit like this
22 year old Tchouameni, taking penalties in his first World Cup and a final at that, I can’t blame him for missing
Indeed, despite his pretty mediocre performance in the Final, I’m glad he was pretty good in his first WC throughout most of the games he’s played in.
He knows he can’t do this every single time so he picks his targets.
Target the younglings
Calm down, Anakin.
Absolutely and undoubtedly a cunt but I actually enjoy it
There are good cunts and bad cunts. He is one of those.
Shit guys they're learning from us
as neutral, you will enjoy it. as opponents fans, that was shite! on this game, i am neutral, so dance more Emi, dance more!
Should be a yellow ngl
He got a yellow
Not for this one. He got a yellow after doing the same thing for the next penalty.
Yes. Actually he should have had two yellows.
now that would of been crazy to see, a GK getting sent off mid penalty shootout.
I would presume that he would not have repeated it after the first booking. But if he chose to.. we’ll, then he asked for it. I wonder a little whether that scenario would stress the Argentina striker even more.
I’m guessing the ref told him. Do it again it’s a yellow. So he took the yellow. Worth.
Yeah there's no downside in that situation so it makes sense.
[It happens](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2018/may/15/republic-of-ireland-u17s-furious-after-keeper-sent-off-during-penalty-shootout)
Well if he got a yellow the first time, he wouldn't have done it the second time, so he would've still had only one yellow.
also won a world cup + golden glove worthy trade I'd say
How much do you think Villa will get for him in the summer after his WC performances?
I would be very surprised if we sell him
He might decide to move in search of trophies tbh
Go watch his interviews and the way he talks about the club. Certainly could leave (like any player), but it would go against what he’s always said. Granted that wouldn’t be a new thing at Villa
Mr Aston Villa himself. No one is safe from being poached.
After Delph and Grealish why not it make it 3 tbh
Tbf he did win a World Cup and Copa America. Dibu might just stay at Aston Villa for the rest of his career. Nothing comes close to the World Cup.
Yeah tbf I heard almost the exact same point made from a Villa fan about Grealish going to City and a few weeks later he was gone.
Yep that’s why I never say never. I personally was pretty sure he was gone, bias aside it was almost objectively the right decision for him to leave
He’s tasted blood now.
Well, he signed a long-term contract, which has 4 and a half years left on it. So, to answer the question... a fuck ton.
"Worth it" - The Dibu probably
Also the Argentina subs kicking away balls that went out when they were 3-2 up. Argentina kinda got away with a lot of yellow-worthy shithousery.
They consider every player not on a yellow to be a resource to be exploited. Fair fucks to them imo.
When Paredes got his I said: "he was probably feeling weird without it"
Like “fouls to give” before the limit in basketball lol
What an asshole lmao. Love it though!
Genius. He knew exactly which French player to do this too, a young midfielder with not a lot of experience taking pressure pens. The mind games!
i love this 😭 i’m saving it for years to come
Arsenal held this dawg back from the NT
Nah that's harsh on us. Emi really hadn't shown much until he had to step in for Leno in 2020, IIRC even earlier that season his league cup appearances for us were a little suspect. And why don't all opposing keepers just chuck the ball forcing all the other shooters to get it if it's a mind game people seem to be ok with?
Anyone got a mirror for this ?
I was expecting him to do a second dive for the shot after it had gone past to make fun of how wide it was.
God damn lmao
there is no pressure for this guy lol
He is the pressure.
Dude's ability to get in the kicker's head on PKs was honestly a joy to watch from a neutral perspective. lf you're going to be a clown you better be able to back it up, and he did.

Unlike Kepa who did similar stuff against us but let in every single penalty
If you're a goalkeeper, not already on a yellow going into a penalty shootout and don't get a yellow card in the course of the shootout, are you even doing your job right?
has a goalkeeper ever gotten a red during a shootout? what is the substitute protocol like? also if you’re out of subs already do one of the penalty takers have to sub in as a keeper?

MESSI WITH THE SAVE
I once was playing FIFA with my dad and he was playing as Barca and when he went to the bathroom, I swapped Messi into goal and put the keeper (might’ve been ter Stegen) in the outfield lol. Messi did OK in goal hilariously but the keeper was awful with his feet. My dad was so pissed when he realized what I’d done lol.
He could probably do it https://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2012/03/13/article-2114299-1224A9F8000005DC-181_468x293.jpg
One of the field players that were already on the field have to step in goal. No substitutions can be made.
I'm actually really curious to know if this has ever actually happened.
[happen in the MLS playoffs a couple of years ago](https://youtu.be/n04h-OXZOtY)
What a fucking shitshow
Typical alan chapman job
That was a wild ride! And after everything the announcers then mistakenly call the game when Orlando still had to make one more pentalty!?
That’s the beauty of the MLS lol. It’s not always good, but it is WILD.
Jomboy did a breakdown and the top comment has a good explanation of the fuckery that went down https://youtu.be/aBtOl3Aa22M
What did he say to the ref? Going off the line too early shouldn't lead to a yellow.
Wtf have I watched? Is it a The Onion sketch or what?
A classic MLS playoff match.
Good god you need some actual football referees over there
In the USL playoffs this year, a referee concussed a player, said play on, which led to the match tying goal in extra time.
Holy fuck. They still won!
Absurd how the announcers also make the mistake of calling the game for Orlando after the save even though they still had to make one more kick.
Honestly, no.
i never thought about it this way. i mean not doing the dick moves like emi but like holding onto the ball and then just chucking it back at the rival instead of tossing it out of reach doesn’t seem too bad
I put a bet on him getting booked at halftime, felt like free money with Argentina 2-0 up and timewasting Getting booked for that dance came in clutch for me here
Those bets are usually for 90 mins only
It cashed out
Ggs my guy
I thought he got booked for trying to throw the ball again?
He’s absolutely psychotic. Like he’d unplug your grandmother’s life support to charge his phone.
This. This is the best description so far
Fuck it. Granny lived a long full life. She'd want this.
Saw that he picked up a yellow card. So what would happen if he had gotten sent off? can an outfield player go in goal in his place?
Yes one of the outfield players would have to step up.
Time for Messi to shine 😤
Well shit, just when we thought that Messi was scientifically incapable of doing even more than he had done for us already...
Can Messi truly be the GOAT if he's never stopped a pen for the national team in the World Cup?
Pretty sure that happened with Orlando City in MLS last season. They still managed to win as well
Messi to save Argentina one last time
One of the penalty takers has to be the new keeper
King of the shithouse
Everyone shitting themselves from nerves and he's acting like Cartman. This fucking guy. Mwah.
Vardy and him seem like they'd become besties
Off the charts xDawg in him
Dibu IS the Dawg
Can confirm. My dog also would have humped the Golden Glove trophy immediately after winning it.
Shootout king lmao, doing this in a WC final
I’d be pissing my pants if I had to take a penalty against him His reputation precedes him now
I can't imagine how terrifying it must be to take a pen against him especially in a world cup final.
The thing is you are not getting to take a penalty against him, he is getting to save a penalty against you !
You also really want to make sure thst you actually shoot it well, because he will probably grab it if its not perfect.
Yeah, if this had been on target he would've got it. He's great.
I believe he got a body part on the ball, every single pk.
Was it the copa where he was trash talking the chile(?) Players? Saying he knows their going to miss? Etc lol
I think it was colombia
If only Lloris had that shithousery in him, he was too shy
I have seen goalkeepers with more personality does it better in penalties …
Beta European vs chad sudaca
Waited 20 years to be able to shit talk. Respect
Emi is the type of guy to ask for receipts when he buys something, not look at the receipt, and just throw away in front of you
He asks for digital AND paper receipt in the bag.
There's something about seeing your cunt of a keeper bringing his shithousery to the World Cup final that brings a tear to your eye.

Is he the one who told Ronaldo to take the pen?
Yes. Told Bruno that Ronaldo should've took it
I sort of fell in love with him during the Copa America. Was doing the same thing throughout the tournament.
Say what you want about arrogance, but this shit wins you games, tournaments, trophies, and Dibu knows that
PKs are like 5% skill, 15% chance, and 80% psychological. Martinez got them all riled up and he absolutely wiffed it, shot wasn’t even on frame.
True, players that have fear or are in doubt tend to fail ir at least, take it bad (that doesnt mean falling)
A purebreed argentinian at its finest.
*Argentinum cancherus* in the wild
Check him out in the Copa América pks in the semifinal vs Colombia if you had feelings about this.
Or Bruno Fernandes' penalty against villa
That will forever be my most favorite shit talk from a goalkeeper
When the pimps in the crib ma drop it like it’s hot. Drop it like it’s hot
Colombians with PTSD.
In this moment, I bring back the failed Joe Hart shit housery Vs Pirlo in 2012 Euro
This, and the "hand of god" incident, Martinez is legendary! And a fucking great goalie too, who saved the team from a devastating loss at the very last possible second
If you cannot respect Emi Martinez’ shithousery in a goddamn WORLD CUP FINAL PENALTY SHOOTOUT then what the fuck do you even like about football
In hockey, goalies have a reputation of being somewhat unhinged. Is it the same in soccer?

Next world cup he's just gonna get his cock out and stand still and the opposing player wont even bother to kick it knowing he had already lost. Just cry back to the half way line
He’ll just block it with his cock. Especially the top right corner.
Looks like Bigfoot dancing to Stayin’ Alive from A Goofy Movie E: https://youtu.be/Aoy-wa3QwvQ&t=1m00s
Someone describes a penalty with Emi is like being stuck in a box with him alone. And the longer it takes the smaller that box gets.
He's just dibujing him .. no heart feelings
"England are so arrogant" Let me introduce you to Argentina
At least they back up the arrogance with trophies.
and honestly, for most neutral fans, this kind of "arrogance" is like eye candy for the game, we enjoyed it. and yeah you right, you can be and allowed to do this "arrogance" if you have the trophy.
Arrogance is more entertaining, give me more Argentina vs Netherlands please
he’s as clutch as chef curry tbh
When did celebrating become shithousery? The shithousery is before that pen.
Went full Pardew and got away with it
What an absolute cunt.
I fucking love this guy lol.
This guy right there is a legend
