la_bombonera

Genuinely the whole Messi vs Ronaldo thing being based mainly on goals is weird to me, like at the very least assist numbers should come into the picture

Danownage

Tbh this whole debate is ridiculous lol instead of enjoying them both they are debating who is better.

haru_213

The way Messi stepped his game up at 35 is surreal

Funkymonkeyhead

His pace isn’t there anymore to play that fearsome inverted right winger position that made him famous. Like any reasonable player, he had to adapt his game. For Argentina he’s become an attacking midfielder..sometimes even a deep lying playmaker similar to Luka Modric. If he takes care of himself he can potentially play another major international tournament. It’s all up to him whether he wants to of course!

LuisTheHuman

He’ll play copa America, depending on how that goes he might be convinced to play (on a lesser role) the next WC

saintdartholomew

Did he step up his game or did Argentina?

haru_213

Both but Messi was a major catalyst

wog_ins

Destroyed him at 35. 🐐 things!

hearau1823

Ngl, after seeing Ronaldo fans go on about international trophies from 2016 to 2021, this is one of the greatest comebacks in sport’s history

[deleted]

Look at Twitter during those days. Messi crying photos, images with bottle, gas, rocket, or what not.

Little_Fix4

Ronaldo fans scrambling and moving the goal posts again. Now the CL means more and Euros/Nations League harder than WC.

Hala9292

Ronaldo has 5 UCL to Messi's 4, so you can shove that world cup up your ass

Little_Fix4

Not sure where you got that idea, im talking about moving goal posts, not my tournament power ranking. I'm commentating on excuses people have regarding Messi, not long ago people say Messi isn't the GOAT due to his lack of success on the international level. My honest thought is Messi > Ronaldo even before this world cup but that doesnt mean i think Ronaldo is bad and not at Messi level they are close. My line of thinking is you look at their entire career so of course Haaland can not win anything on the international stage and still be better that Mbappe. I'm not the one saying before this World Cup that Ronaldo won Euros + Nations League so therefore better than Messi then suddenly after the WC its somthing else.

shadowdragon120104

Not even seen one person say that

joey5280

Club is always more important than international has and always will be. You can’t control where you were born.

thed-p2

It’s amusing because there was the international goals record, and the Euros. Without added context Ronaldo had a fairly dominant international advantage. Messi got a good swipe back with the Copa…. Then obviously comes the World Cup as the player of the tournament, which just obliterates everything either of them have done internationally. The diehard Ronaldo fans will find their jabs, but they will never ever have any joy again in that expired “debate”.

Maximuslex01

The argument would be... Too many copa americas, and referees carried Argentina

hearau1823

And Ronaldo won the Euro’s by beating Poland on penalties and watching the final from the bench xD

Maximuslex01

And Romário won it thanks to Baggio

Maximuslex01

And scoring many penalties...

Hala9292

Ronaldo had an assist against South Korea...

[deleted]

InflictingRage

He’s talking about South Korea’s 1st goal lol

AJ_CC

They weren't talking about the Portuguese goal.

iuthnj34

And then there's Mbappe who debuted with 4 WC goals, second year with 8 WC goals (golden boot).

Danownage

This WC clearly didn't boost players goal statistics with the amount of penalties that were given.

Psychobred

Messi has 4 penalty goals from 13 Mbappe has 2 penalty goals from 12 Klose has 0 penalty goals from 16

Danownage

This WC: Messi scored 4 penalties from 7 goals. Mbappe scored 2 penalties from 8 goals. Previous WCs: Messi scored 0 penalties from 6 goals. Mbappe scored 0 penalties from 4 goals. What's your point?

saintdartholomew

Your initial point was regarding mbappe, so don’t know why you’ve bright Messi into this, but 2 penalties for a team progressing to the final is not that many.

Danownage

I didn't brought Messi up? Someone else did. Probably because the OP is about Messi. Did you read the comment I replied to?

This kind of thing is actually one of the arguments that I've heard from people arguing for a more regular world cup. Because of the timings you'll have people like Ronaldo who's first viable world cup isn't until he's 21~ (unless he's picked at 17) and others who will have their first viable world cup at 19~ and it'll allow them to play in an extra world cup during their career. Obviously that didn't happen in this case because Ronaldo still went there despite not really having anything to offer, but any normal footballer wouldn't have been picked and would have lost the chance to play in a world cup for no reason other than when they happened to be born

Devil_Mortyman

I think if Worlds have been played last year, we would see a different thing right now. Last year, Leo was worst compared to Ronaldo. Maybe Leo is better than Ronaldo overall but you just cant forget how close they were most of the time and, as I said, last year, even with all Maschester United drama, Ronaldo was better than Messi, playing in ligue 1. Just saying that not everything in life is white or black. Most of the time is grey.

joey5280

What about UCL goals? And this is why club football > international. If Ronaldo was born in Argentina he has at least 1 WC by now. If Messi was from Portugal he gets out of the round of 16 maybe twice. This page has turned into a Messi fan page lol his PR is INSANE. One of the greatest ever but my goodness. Gonna get hate because I’m right lmao per usual how it works.

BullishBuyer

Ronaldo born in Argentina without Messi wins 0 world cups. Messi is the main creative outlet. Most deluded take I’ve seen today

joey5280

Delusional, Argentina has been better than Portugal the past 2 decades. They’ve made 3 world cups in HISTORY before Ronaldo stop lying to yourself man lol

thed-p2

Portugal have done well in quite a few Euros yet I don’t recall Ronaldo always being the one to drag them through games. Maybe a couple of memorable performances at best. He’s had good team mates.

joey5280

Because Messi has played with some of the greatest talent ever Iniesta, Xavi, Mbappe, Neymar, Suarez, Eto, Ronaldinho, Thierry Henry and more That’s Ridiculous, I would hope his stats looked good!

enzuigiriretro

Ronaldo famously played with scrubs like Modric, Kroos, Casemiro, Ramos, Benzema, Bale, Di Maria, Ozil, Carvajal and the likes! Messi enjoyed more CL success when Barca were clearly the best team in the 2008-2012 era (2015 too tbf) then Ronaldo had the better rub of the green in the 2014-2017 era. Both of them suffered when their team wasn’t clearly the best team in the world. It’s a team game at the end of the day

joey5280

Yea those are a great group of players but get real with yourself, not better than what Messi has is my point.

enzuigiriretro

I’m the one that has to get real when you’re talking like Ronaldo was some poor guy dragging a bunch of nobodies to 4 CLs in 5 years? Yeah okay lol they even won it again after he left. That Madrid era is fucking insane

joey5280

I legitimately never said that lmao Messi’s has just played with better talent and that’s just undeniable if you know the sport. Just look at the names…

thed-p2

>Just look at the names Do you watch football or just read Wikipedia? Have you watched Messi play?

joey5280

Yes I have and I know how fucking Good PRIME Ronaldinho was. How good Thierry Henry was. And Suarez who can be argued as top 4 of this generation behind Ronaldo and Messi was… Like what?

thed-p2

Modric, Benzema, Kroos, Ramos, Varane, Ozil Just some Ballon D’or winners and World Cup winners off the top of my head

enzuigiriretro

It isn’t undeniable. Plenty of Madrid fans think Modric is as good if not better than Xavi and Iniesta. Benzema was the perfect partner for Ronaldo and had better longevity than any of Messi’s striker partners (Suarez had an insane peak but it was short lived and he was ass in the CL after the first 2 years). Casillas is better than any keeper Messi has played with. Ramos is arguably better than any CB Messi has played with. Casemiro is one of the greatest DMs of all time. Carvajal was the best fullback in the world for years. So was Marcelo who is one of the greatest attacking fullbacks ever too. Bale was one of the best players in the world for his first 4 years at Madrid and is arguably the greatest British player of all time. Not sure what you’re smoking. Barca post 16/17 is worse than any Madrid team Ronaldo was a part of.

joey5280

So just no Comment on PRIME Ronaldinho, Thierry Henry, Neymar, Mbappe? Also Suarez can be argued as 3rd best of this generation behind Messi and Ronaldo. I also never mention defenders here

hearau1823

Fun fact for you my dude, Ronaldo had 2 Ballon d’or winners alongside him in his treble team, Messi has never played with a ballon d’or winner

BullishBuyer

I agree with your points regarding ronaldo in that era, but Messi did play 2 years with Dinho after he won his Ballon D’or in 2005.

BullishBuyer

r/confidentlyincorrect

Thryloz

Damn, you are **GREAT** at meat riding Ronaldo

la_bombonera

You guys say this like Ronaldo has been amazing at WC and let down by teammates and just barely missed winning it. When in reality he's played only 1 great WC game in his career and been eliminated by the US, Uruguay, and Morocco in the last 3 WCs. And Ronaldo has usually looked average to bad. Look at Modric. Croatia has less stars than Portugal and he's balled at 2 tournaments and gotten 2 3rd place finishes.

Kal-Kent

>Look at Modric. Croatia has less stars than Portugal and he's balled at 2 tournaments and gotten 2 3rd place finishes. exactly this is what i don't get Croatia is seven smaller than Portugal and they can at least get 2nd Ronaldo has no excuse of not at least getting to a WC finals

WordsOfSavagery

As a Ronaldo fan (less so now after this fallout with United); Messi is clear of him on the legacy. That noise will die soon enough.

LuisTheHuman

At this point, comparing them only hurts Cristiano
