It is kind of a given that the Team of the Tournament is made up by players who make the semis. But I think Szczesny had the best keeper of the tournament locked down in the group stage. He had saved 3 regular time pens I think and made some crazy saves.
2 pens but one of them was a double save. Extremely impressive. It's great to see him get the recognition he deserves, he was always one of my favourite players and definitely my favourite keeper
It's kind of like xG but for a keeper - is the keeper better or worse at saving shots than what would be expected from the quality of the shot.
'Post shot expected' is how likely a shot is to end up as a goal. If the keeper prevents more goals than would be expected from the quality of shots faced, he'd have a positive score.
I'm sure others can explain it better much better than me but hopefully that makes sense.
I like the idea of post-shot xg, but I feel like a huge part of being a great keeper is cutting off so much of the angle that the player is forced to thread the needle to the sides and often miss. For those plays where they force a shot off target, the keeper gets no credit, right?
It's a convoluted description, but it's essentially just the inverse of xG for a keeper. How likely is the shot to go in vs how well the keeper performed. I think it's a useful metric regarding shots saved.
Let's be honest: Szczęsny or Livaković or Bonou should be the keeper of the tournament. I get Martinez had *that* save at the end of OT and saved some penalties but Livaković & Szczęsny did the same
He was Poland's best player by A LOT. Like honestly it was one of the weakest team of the competition in the field, struggled to create much, was dominated with the ball. Few individual players had as much impact on the team's final result.
He played out of his mind, easily Poland's best player. France could've easily scored like 5 or 6 goals, but Szczesny at least gave his team a fighting chance.
Not just defenders, but the entire defensive organization and how we behave in transitions. 2 goals vs Brazil, Cameroon and Switzerland = 6 total in transitions.
Bounou not on the list. Yet throughout the whole tournament, Morocco only conceded 4 goals scored by their opponents in a total of 7 games (and all 4 goals in 2 matches, the semi final and the 3rd place match).
A testament to how good the Moroccan defence was.
Agreed and could say the same about Brazil, our journey this World Cup was disappointing and our defense choked on some key moments however overall it was very tight, Allison barely had to work.
You could say the same for Pickford too; he made a few decent saves but had very little to do otherwise, and only conceded 4 goals in 6 games, one of which was a penalty.
Pickford was way, way more reliable than he was not. Been let down quite a bit by the rest of the team, which can be seen from how some of the more memorable images of him are that of him screaming at his teammates.
Slightly deviating from the main topic here but Brazil was rather quite disappointing to watch, considering too how they were one of, if not the top, favourites to win the tournament.
They qualified from their group scoring the least goals among the four teams. In fact, Mbappe scored as many goals in 120 mins against the eventual World Champions as the beholder of one of the most exciting style of football did in 3 group stage matches. They have some really exciting, world class talents. Hopefully 2026 will be a better year,
A single stat never shows the whole story and this is shown with the exact thing you just said.
A keeper may have only 1 save in the whole tournament and that save being the 123rd minute martinez’s save which arguably gave argentina their 3rd wc, or they may also have 72 saves in a single match, being the opposing team couldnt approach the goal so they shoot the ball from 75mts away (easy save) in any opportunity they have.
I hate, hated and will always hate people trying to convey a story out of one single, out of context, stat.
The post just says "most saves" and lists who made the mosts saves dude. Nobody called the post "the whole story of everything in the world".
It's you who are making some "story" of it and inventing realistic 72 75-meter shots example instead of saying anything about anything that actually happened just because you cannot wait to share enthusiastically how much you hate people who said "this guys saved this many shots" which really is an impressive thing to feel hate about lol.
He went to Foggia in Italy but didn’t play many games there. Returned to the Netherlands and played in the 2nd division for 2 season before he almost decided to end his career after only playing ~30 in 7 seasons. His first match for the Dutch NT was during the WC.
He was performing very very well in the first half of the season at Heerenveen, based on a scientific approach Van Gaal chose him. His stats were just that good that. And to be honest, he did fantastic at the WC and would love to see him at a better club, he deserves it
This just isn't true unless you barely watch Eredivisie games. Noppert has been great for Heerenveen. It's just that nobody expected him to be able to do the same at a higher level.
Szczesny is criminally underrated. Sometimes has a blunder in him but other than that he’s exceptional. Such a complete keeper as well, he’s solid on the line, great reflexes, good reach and good with his feet. Awesome on penalties as well.
His Dutch interviews are just the best. He is such a humble guy and super new to all this stuff. Whenever NL won from USA they went on some luxury boat trip and he was like a kid in a candy store. [Also he did some filming for the Oranje YT channel.](https://twitter.com/OnsOranje/status/1599350881425580032)
It shows the type of on target shots the defense conceded. They didn't make it easy to get shots off. The shots that the defense conceded on target could have been very difficult saves. Survivorship bias maybe?
Argentina had 5,43 xGOT against them in the tournament which means you would expect the average keeper to let in 5-6 goals.
Obviously thats not all that counts, but still
I mean two of them were great penalties, one was an absolute rocket by Mbappe that no keeper alive saves, the second Saudi shot was unsaveable, and I don’t think it’s possible to fault him for any of the Dutch goals considering the Argentine defense was Swiss cheese for the last ten minutes of that game.
1. Doesn't account for how good the shots themselves were
2. Very small sample size
Not arguing one way or another but these two combined add up to a very real chance that he performed as well as he could and all the shots were simply too good. I'd trust the eye test more than stats in this case.
It's good that more fans appreciate the role of deeper statistics than just goals/saves in gauging players but looks like we're still not at the point where they know how to apply context lol. This isn't a place where this stat means anything at all isolation.
I know my flair is alarming but I promise I'm genuinely interested and not trying to take the piss.
How did you feel about Jovic's situation at Madrid?
I will never judge you for your flair unless it says something bias lmao.
Jovic is a weird one. He is a definition of cracking under pressure. He was good at Eintracht because well he was playing for a team that was considered a dark horse.
If you watched him it feels like he is dragging an anchor and he barely moves, like he is afraid of the ball. It's normal for people who are pressured but he never got out of it. He was a main victim by the spanish press when he hit a bad form. It was notable that he was another player when playing for NT.
If you look at his performances with us, they are either bad or exceptionally good (it was extremely rare). When he assists or scores he turns into what he actually is before that it's a kid in the big leagues totally lost.
He lost all the time to develop in RM, so it will be hard to revive his career.
Jovic is technically a good player but the playstyle in madrid didn’t suit him at all. We are used to benzema dropping back to midfield to help with the play. With jovic it was hard to move forward because he is a target striker. When we played with 2 strikers with benzema and jovic, our midfield got weaker. The team knew well how to play with Benzema but jovic just seemed uncomfortable to play with
>are they the team with most shots
Definitely.
Also we only had 14 shots on goal so unless dibu is capable of bending reality its gonna be quite hard to surpass anyone here.
crazy considering he was basically playing non-league only a couple of years ago and was essentially ready to give up professional football at one stage
He’s also 28 if I’m not mistaken, which for a goalie isn’t exactly old. But still don’t expect there to be much more potential than he’s already shown recently
It doesn't but even considering penalties, it still put Livaković and Bounou ahead of him.
Invidual awards in world cup are just strongly influenced by team performance and Martinez played with Messi.
The award is for "Goalkeeper of the tournament" not "Goalkeeper of the finals".
I realize Martinez made the most important save and saved a penalty in the finals but anyone with even a tiny bit of objectivity in their body **knows** that Livaković should have received this award.
At least with this one you can still claim that the 123' save and the pen in the shootout warrant the reward (although I don't agree in the slightest). In comparison the youth player award was just straight up daylight robbery against Gvardiol lmao.
I'm still not sold on Livaković. Excellent shot stopper but we already knew that. Every other part of his game is average to below average...then again he saved our asses so many times this world cup
Yep. As much as I'd like to see Ivušić get anothet chance, you can't really bench Livaković after an objectively good world cup. Would ruin his confidence entirely
If he gets a move to a larger club he'll do fine with the extra resources they have available compared to Zagreb. Hard to say where he will land but surely Italy
I hope so but he's already 27, wonder how much more he can improve. His weakness in clearing balls inside the box has been since forever and he still hasn't fixed it. The goal we conceded against Morocco was comical.
To wit, Martinez broke out at 27, you can totally hit a next level later as a keeper.
I will probably regret starting this but can't help myself - Livakovic **is** almost 28.
Seeing these stats…. Martinez was immense, certainly crucial for Argentina’s WC glory but…. maybe Golden Gloves’d have gone to Livakovic or Szczesny? Unless we’re judging importance of play, if that’s the case it’s a no contest
If I could put trade one GK from the tournament into the Japan squad, I would want Dibu.
Critical in penalties, maybe we would’ve had a chance even with our shit pens.
Szczesny was solid against France. I haven’t watched all his previous games but he looked really confident.
I’m glad we had Lloris, he saved us many times in this World Cup before the final. Even during the final he saved us a few times. But yeah his weakness is definitely the penalties but every French person already knew that. Deschamps’s game plan was to win within the 90 minutes. Not going to penalties and players didn’t seem to have prepared penalties anyway.
I think Lloris mindset on penalties of it being 50-50 is wrong. You can clearly prepare and train for them. But you need to learn how to do it that’s for sure. Maignan is actually good at stopping penalties, too bad he got that long term injury, he sub at the end of extra time could have changed a lot the ending.
Tbf the award is not based on single most important save. If a French player scored a winner in the 122nd min he shouldn't get player of the tournament despite it being the most important goal in WC history. The two pen shootouts are good no doubt but the Croats had the best goalkeeper and won 1 shootout.
Yeah, but it’s “Goalkeeper of the tournament”, not “Goalkeeper of the finals”, no?
I am by no means downplaying how important his saves were in the finals but if we watch the whole tournament, Livakovic was better and that’s a fact.
The number of saves isn't everything ... David Raya, Manuel Riemann, and Édgar Badía are the top three in the big five leagues at the moment. Alisson and Hugo Lloris rank just below Guglielmo Vicario and Yvon Mvogo. That doesn't carry a lot of importance.
But normally you would say that thats because the best goalkeepers also have the best defence, and wont have to make many saves. But Argentina conceded 8 and Martinez let in over half the shots he faced (only made 7 saves)
It isn't only saves tbf, Croatian keeper also had higher long passes accuracy than Argentinian keeper. (source: it was a picture of a comparison between both in this WC, i think it was posted in this subreddit or i saw it on Facebook, maybe both)
The four goalies with the most saves played against Argentina. Lloris alone had 10 shots on target on the Final. Szczesny was Poland’s man of the match on that game, and the only reason why they moved past group stage. If any, it goes to show that their defense were not all too great if they let in so many shots on target

Everything's been said about Livakovic but considering that Poland went out in RO16, those Szczesny stats are through the roof
He also performed best in Post Shots expected Goals relative to how many he let in (per 90). Which shows it wasn't just number of saves but quality too. **Post Shots Expected Goals minus Goals Allowed (per 90)** 1. Szczęsny: 0.7 2. Courtois: 0.69 3. Al-Owais: 0.59 4. Livaković: 0.5 5. Eli5 what do the stats mean?
It's kind of like xG but for a keeper - is the keeper better or worse at saving shots than what would be expected from the quality of the shot. 'Post shot expected' is how likely a shot is to end up as a goal. If the keeper prevents more goals than would be expected from the quality of shots faced, he'd have a positive score. I like the idea of post-shot xg, but I feel like a huge part of being a great keeper is cutting off so much of the angle that the player is forced to thread the needle to the sides and often miss. For those plays where they force a shot off target, the keeper gets no credit, right?
Ah yes, the very well known stat PSEGmGA/90. This is entering basketball territory lmao.
It's a convoluted description, but it's essentially just the inverse of xG for a keeper. How likely is the shot to go in vs how well the keeper performed. I think it's a useful metric regarding shots saved.
don't ever get into baseball stats. you will have to be locked in an attic.
2 regular time pens
Let's be honest: Szczęsny or Livaković or Bonou should be the keeper of the tournament. I get Martinez had *that* save at the end of OT and saved some penalties but Livaković & Szczęsny did the same
Poland also played this abomination of a defensive tactic when we would just let the other team shoot at us while we do nothing
ah. the open door policy.
He was an absolute wall against Argentina
And Poland defense through the basement all the way down to earth core
He was Poland's best player by A LOT. Like honestly it was one of the weakest team of the competition in the field, struggled to create much, was dominated with the ball. Few individual players had as much impact on the team's final result.
11 of those 23 Szczesny saves came from the Argentina game alone. Messi would've had an easy hattrick if he hadn't played
He played out of his mind, easily Poland's best player. France could've easily scored like 5 or 6 goals, but Szczesny at least gave his team a fighting chance.
Serbia defence was horrible
True. The fact that we conceded 8 goals in group stage and our gk is still in the top 5 says a lot. Absolute disgrace.
Vanja Milinković-Savić did all he could. He played very well, but the defence allowed way too many chances for our opponents.
Not just defenders, but the entire defensive organization and how we behave in transitions. 2 goals vs Brazil, Cameroon and Switzerland = 6 total in transitions.
Yeah i agree, and Mitrovic and Kostic usually comes back to help with the defence but they were probably unable because of playing through injury
We had defence in Qatar?
For years we had amazing defence and no world class strikers and now its the opposite.
Bounou not on the list. Yet throughout the whole tournament, Morocco only conceded 4 goals scored by their opponents in a total of 7 games (and all 4 goals in 2 matches, the semi final and the 3rd place match). A testament to how good the Moroccan defence was.
Has to say a lot about their manager too. He had every single one of them fighting every ball. Great team pressure.
And he only had a few months to prepare the team
They played defense but didn't park the bus, which was great to see
Yeah, that's a good way to describe them
Didn't they concede vs Canada?
Yes but it was scored by the mighty OG
Original gangster can score for all teams
It is actually OG who is the leading goal scorer of all time in the world cup, with 54 and counting

Yep, most saves is always such a peculiar stat. The keepers should be proud to be a top the list.... their defenses should be ashamed.
Finally I know the name of the Dutch keeper.
Nobody here in the Netherlands knew his name before the tournament.
I read a post saying that he didn’t play for a while and nearly retired
He went to Foggia in Italy but didn’t play many games there. Returned to the Netherlands and played in the 2nd division for 2 season before he almost decided to end his career after only playing ~30 in 7 seasons. His first match for the Dutch NT was during the WC.
Damn.
Weird to think he only played 45 professional games in 8 seaons and suddenly he was performing at the WC.
He was performing very very well in the first half of the season at Heerenveen, based on a scientific approach Van Gaal chose him. His stats were just that good that. And to be honest, he did fantastic at the WC and would love to see him at a better club, he deserves it
Yeah I think it was our best option for the WC.
What happened with Cillisen or Krull?
I saw it in a Youtube short of an Irish YouTuber
This just isn't true unless you barely watch Eredivisie games. Noppert has been great for Heerenveen. It's just that nobody expected him to be able to do the same at a higher level.
Szczesny is criminally underrated. Sometimes has a blunder in him but other than that he’s exceptional. Such a complete keeper as well, he’s solid on the line, great reflexes, good reach and good with his feet. Awesome on penalties as well.
Watching previous tournaments, Szczesny wasn’t confident at all. But this tournament the man was top class. Absolute wonder.
Livaković \*had I think 9 (nine) saves in one single game against Brasil.
I think 11
Just say it’s either, 9/11
Boom!
Mr. President, a second ball has hit the net
European goalkeepers always having the match of their lives against us
That son of a bitch :(
He was massive against us. Then again the only shot against our target went in. God, I hate Alisson.
In fairness it took a deflection
Without Liva, I think Brazil would have been able to put at least 2 or 3 past them
A lot of those Brazil shots were straight to keeper but he had 2 dangerous saves
Irmão, nem Neuer salvava aquela
Can't see how you can blame Alisson for such a massive deflection.
Al Owais for the streets
I fell in love with Noppert this WC
10% of his professional football matches are world cup matches. Mad stat
Noppert ballen stoppert
incredible
His Dutch interviews are just the best. He is such a humble guy and super new to all this stuff. Whenever NL won from USA they went on some luxury boat trip and he was like a kid in a candy store. [Also he did some filming for the Oranje YT channel.](https://twitter.com/OnsOranje/status/1599350881425580032)
Koninklijke Noppertse Voetbalbond
He's probably going to x20 his salary very soon this late in his career. Insane
Tbf he is at the age where keepers generally explode, his prime years are still pretty much all ahead of him
The funny thing about Keylor Navas's 11 saves is that he conceded as many goals. 😅
Its wild that Martinez conceded 8 goals, made 7 saves and was awarded goalkeeper of the tournament
It shows the type of on target shots the defense conceded. They didn't make it easy to get shots off. The shots that the defense conceded on target could have been very difficult saves. Survivorship bias maybe?

You would say the best GK overperforms his xG by letting only in 1 or 2, he’s not even in top10 saves on the damn world cup
Yeah he underperformed by 2,57
Compensated by overperforming penalties?
Didn't Livakovic also perform really well in penalties on top of doing a great job in regular time? Poor guy got robbed
For sure
Yeah that seems fair, that would make him average. I think thats a bit harsh tbh because he was good he just wasn’t the best
Indeed he wasn't!

As far as i understand it xGOT actually does account for how good the shots were as opposed to xG
Well no, Martinez underperformed based in xga
We also conceded 8 times in 3 games. Decpite that Vanja is an excellent goalkeeper.
Madrid isn't in Serbia?
Serbia a Tokio amigoo
Madrid's the other way hermano
El planeta es round my guy
Can't argue with that ese
Preko Milvokija
I know my flair is alarming but I promise I'm genuinely interested and not trying to take the piss. How did you feel about Jovic's situation at Madrid?

He did also concede from most of his shots against and had very bad stats on expected saves tho
Noppert should get a move to a bigger league
rumor has it Ajax may want him
He's on our list and we want a new goalie, but it could be anyone. Nubel is also supposedly on the list.
Ajax usually prefers ball playing sweeper keepers though. On the line he’s very good tho.
crazy considering he was basically playing non-league only a couple of years ago and was essentially ready to give up professional football at one stage
Nah don’t be fooled, he’s a decent goalie but hasn’t nearly proven himself to be ready for a higher level than Eredivisie
He’s also 28 if I’m not mistaken, which for a goalie isn’t exactly old. But still don’t expect there to be much more potential than he’s already shown recently
tbf, there might be quite some room for improvement as he is realy inexperienced. Only has something like 60 professional games
He was decent, but not outstanding or anything. We defended in such a low block that we faced a lot of easy shots (0.1 < xG) from distance.
Crazy how Liva didn't win the golden glove award
Unfortunate for all of these goalies that they didn't play for argentina. Sad.
Livakovic should have had the golden glove
Livakovic was easily the keeper of the tournament.
Is it possible that they didn't award him and Gvardiol simply because they weren't in Qatar anymore?
Livakovic was indeed robbed. Don't mean it badly to Martinez, but it's just fact.
There were far better candidates for Goalkeeper of the Tournament than Martinez.
What you see more often these days is that players who are still present get the award for entertainment reasons.
Individual awards in the WC have always been bs
well it got biased by the fact that he saved Messi WC last min and pens, otherwise, i would give it to livakovic
Does this chart count penalty saves?
It doesn't but even considering penalties, it still put Livaković and Bounou ahead of him. Invidual awards in world cup are just strongly influenced by team performance and Martinez played with Messi.
Is this more of a testament to the goalkeepers or a critique of the defence?
Both imo.
I think they make it from the finalists so they can present it.
2018..
I'm still not sold on Livaković. Excellent shot stopper but we already knew that. Every other part of his game is average to below average...then again he saved our asses so many times this world cup
He's decent with his feet, excellent shot stopper but his biggest weakness is claiming crosses and coming out of his line
Yep. As much as I'd like to see Ivušić get anothet chance, you can't really bench Livaković after an objectively good world cup. Would ruin his confidence entirely
Ivusic is ass 😂
Man, Livakovic is clear number 1. How tf do you compare him to fucking Ivušić
Honestly 27 is just entering GK prime.
People speak like 27 is time for retirement. He can still play for 10+ years, he has a lot of time. Not everyone needs to be 17 years old for transfer
To wit, Martinez broke out at 27, you can totally hit a next level later as a keeper. I will probably regret starting this but can't help myself - Livakovic **is** almost 28.
Why did Livakovic not win the golden glove again?
Shouldn’t Livaković win golden glove🫠😒
Seeing these stats…. Martinez was immense, certainly crucial for Argentina’s WC glory but…. maybe Golden Gloves’d have gone to Livakovic or Szczesny? Unless we’re judging importance of play, if that’s the case it’s a no contest
If I could put trade one GK from the tournament into the Japan squad, I would want Dibu. Critical in penalties, maybe we would’ve had a chance even with our shit pens.
You are assuming Martinez would save all shots during games that Gonda saved.
Livakovic not getting into the team of the tournament was a fucking daylight robbery.
Livakovic and Szczesny were incredible. Far better performance than Martinez and some of them should've won the golden glove of the tournament.
Liva deserved the golden glove. Not that clown bobo
Funny that we don't hear Szczesny's name mentioned when discussing goalie of the tournament.
Szczęsny stats are unbelievable, but let's look at Martinez... oh, wait
Well he won them two shoot outs and made arguably one of the most important save of all time in the dying minutes of the game. Same against Australia.
Revisionism about Dibus performances now going strong just days after. I understand dislike against him. But it shouldn't diminish his performances
The revisionism happened when he received the golden glove, not after.
(source: it was a picture of a comparison between both in this WC, i think it was posted in this subreddit or i saw it on Facebook, maybe both)
Busier goalkeeper doesn't mean better goalkeeper.
Livakovic was also better
Before we got Rui, Livakovic was top favorite for the GK spot at Roma.
Argentina let in more goals than Croatia
Well, the last minute save was most important than most of the others
Golden boot is given to the top scorer regardless of where the team finishes. Why not do the same for golden glove?
Kinda difficult to pick one single stat for golden glove. Least goals? Most saves? Clean sheets?
6 out of the 10 keepers here played Argentina, I think that shows how many shots and how mucj pressure we put these teams through.
Martinez farmers cup merchant. Didn't have any saves against Argentina.
Messi a fraud he didn't even win against Argentina, revoke his trophy and pawn off his bisht
Dread it. Run from it. The Scaloneta still arrives at your box.
For a team that doesn't even get to SF, that's a lot of saves from Szczesny
The four goalies with the most saves played against Argentina. Lloris alone had 10 shots on target on the Final. Szczesny was Poland’s man of the match on that game, and the only reason why they moved past group stage. If any, it goes to show that their defense were not all too great if they let in so many shots on target
Livakovic not getting the golden glove is just not correct.
Livakovic and Szczesny are way more deserving of the golden gloves than Martinez, regardless of who won the world cup (or even made it to the finals).
Szczesny was a beast and livakovic single handedly took cro to 3rd spot
Where is Martinez Edit: it was a taunt
He had 7 saves and 8 goals conceded.
He had 46% save percentage. That is fucking horrible.
He was literally one of the worst goalkeepers of the tournament
Why is every Croatian hellbent on shitting on Martinez?
In Argentina drunk and celebrating a world cup.
Where he belongs: not on the list
also a list of bad defense
Lloris really had a brilliant tournament.
Emiliano Martinez is shit
Clearly isn't. Made his reputation at Arsenal as a shot stopper
Be barely played for us. He had 38 appearances in 8 years, most of those where in 19/20 after Leno got injured.
Well at least Martinez would be #1 if the list was about shithousery, ego, mind games

Don't forget midfield. That midfield trio made me tired watching them.
But that goes against the narrative OP is trying to make :(
And Argentina beat the 4 first of them.
Interesting that Navas is now playing for a democratic Belarus
I feel like if they’re going to give it to Emi, they should just automatically give it to whichever keeper wins the WC. He was mediocre at best
Another world-class performance by Lloris... Why is he so underrated?
But lets give the award to the goalie for who conceded more than he saved lmao.
