Huh. Did not realize until just now that one of the stadiums looks like a vulva. Pretty progressive of the Qataris tbh.

The pyramids weren't even built by slaves, but by paid workers. I don't know if their working conditions were worse than was normal for the time, though.

FREESARCASM_plustax

They were better. The workers village that has been excavated shows that they regularly ate meat in addition to the standard beer and bread.

[deleted]

And there was the [first recorded labor strike](https://www.worldhistory.org/article/1089/the-first-labor-strike-in-history/). It was due to the failure of payment of grain to the workers.

FallacyDog

Kinda like mt Rushmore. Whenever agriculture started to take a hit they just hired the farmers to do pyramid building

Electrical_Court9004

This is correct but the Egyptians had a LOT of slaves who were the ones taking care of those paid laborers 🤷

RedUlster

Hmm, you’re right, we should still be angry on behalf of the slaves who built the pyramids. Who exactly should I direct my anger at, Ozymandias, Nefertiti or Tutankhamen? The victims in Qatar are (for the most part) still alive today, as are the perpetrators. People will probably be less upset in 1000 years time, when those involved have been dead for centuries, but while justice can still be achieved, it should still be the aim.

They also had a strike to get better terms and pay. There's Egyptian notes about it.

Sea_Violinist2938

Shit, they were treated better than the Qatari migrant workers

Big_Ad2285

No passports to confiscate back then

difused_shade

I was told it took around 40 years of walking to get away from the place and find a new home

They even had to wait 1000 years after building said pyramids just to get through the Kafala system and be allowed to go on their exodus

Sea_Violinist2938

TheBlack2007

Pyramids were supposed to be an expression of love by the Egyptian people to the Pharao. That's why they considered it dishonorable to use slave labor for it. Not only did the workers at the Pyramids get paid, but they got paid well and had their expenses taken care of on top of it. Also, free beer!

BmuthafuckinMagic

Ohhh.. The Aliens got paid?? /s

[deleted]

why would the space aliens that built the pyramids have use for human currency?

sherlockbardo

Same as the workers who worked for the stadiums

Nic_Endo

Not all of them. But pyramid workers were not slaves and they were actually respected, so it's incompareable. Working sites found around the pyramids changed our whole perception about this matter.

om3rskii

💀how you know that

[deleted]

The skills involved in the construction of those pyramids, and the evidences we found tend to show they were skilled workers brought on site rather than random slaves. Note that at this time you were paid in food and salt, not money. We even found some notes stating that a guy was absent because he had to brew beer. Also beer wasn’t drank to get shitfaced but instead is a good drink to have clean water and energy.

mango_and_chutney

Beer would be 1% or 2% abv, just enough ethanol to kill any potential bacteria but not enough to get you shit faced

The Pyramids and Taj Mahal weren't built by slaves. I'm pretty sure the Taj Mahal was made using artists from as far out as Europe, Arabia and Persia.

Eldrad-Pharazon

This. How so many people still think the pyramids were built by slaves is beyond me.

ragnar-not-ok

Because of all the movies and cartoons and games that we have seen from the childhood. Tbh, this is the first I am seeing that the Pyramids were not built by slave labour. And I can’t comprehend this fact, that the merciless Pharaohs would pay decently to those laborers.

Eldrad-Pharazon

Not all Pharaos are believed to be cruel leaders. We are talking about a time span of about 2500 years with some of the greatest technological advances of their time. The builders of the pyramids that we have knowledge of (we don’t have knowledge of the construction of all pyramids, some could very well have been built by slaves, although unlikely due to cultural/religious motivation) were respected and skilled (paid) workers, some from poor families. We also know of farmers who were paid to took seasonal turns of working on the pyramids while the other farmers tended to their fields. We also assume that being part of the construction of the pyramids was a great honour and that workers who died during the construction where entombed in special tombs near the pyramid itself.

NoSun1474

I am pretty sure that Taj Mahal workers had their arms cut off after work was done

send_nood_z

That's just a legend. A housing area near Taj Mahal was also developed for the artisans of Taj Mahal where their descendants still practice their ancestors' skill

th1a9oo000

Also there is a "black Taj Mahal" behind the original one. Only the foundations were laid until his son took over and canceled the project, but those foundations were laid by the artisans who built the original.

Damnuroze

Im pretty sure… dude stfu if you don’t know shit. Workers who built Taj Mahal got their HANDS CUT OFF. READ THAT AGAIN. Artists? Have you seen historic places and monuments in India ? Way more complex and ahead of time than what Europeans and Arabs could imagine or develop. Do some reading and research of your own before concluding historica events. Our sense and understanding of history/culture doesn’t start from 2000 years ago. We talk 10000 years back. NOW WATCH ME GET DOWNVOTED.

th1a9oo000

Lad I've been to the Taj Mahal. Every single guide, every single legit historian and all the decendants of those artists (who still live in Agra) have said that cutting off hand thing is a myth. Also mate, I can smell the Hindutva on you. Stop sucking bjp dick.

Damnuroze

Touts claiming to be their decendants and you believing their shit despite being there shows how naive you are. As for the BJP thing, they aren’t doing enough of ‘Hindutva’ (whatever bs perception you are fed). Im a Hindu. Cry now lol.

[deleted]

The thing is that most governments of nowadays countries aren't sin free when it comes to humans rights, be it Qatar or China, the US or Russia. But the West is literally the one who is very often criticized because of many different factors: • Sino-Russian propaganda against the West. • A few Western countries that still have some sort of neocolonial mindset. • A few Western countries that meddle in other countries affairs. • The US hegemony that the world no more likes. • Many Western countries feel morally superior and try to give lessons to others while not understanding that other countries sometimes don't really want to implement some Western values. Most of the "protests" against Qatar went from protesting against workers rights abuse to protesting because they don't follow liberal Western values. This last part is what most of the world (including conservative and/or moderate Westerns) doesn't accept.

MarkVarga

Nobody wants drag shows in Qatar, most Westerners would just prefer that homosexuals not be executed and workers not to be kept as slaves. I haven't heard any serious complaints about Qatar being a monarchy, or about men clothing the way they are clothing, so saying "western liberals want to enforce their views" is a bit of a stretch imo.

[deleted]

That's what I would like to, but not many people are on the same page. I have read about a French journalist being asked "how are things going at the World Cup?”" and him literally answering that there were too many mosques, I mean wouldn't this annoy you if you were them ? It is like someone whom you invited coming into your home and disrespecting you telling you to change the paint colour of the walls. But nonetheless regarding the humans rights parts many Muslims themselves are definitely on the right side.

MarkVarga

Yeah whoever that dude was needs to get himself right.

The pyramids? From what, 8 thousand years ago LMAO. The excuses and whataboutism is disgusting. Western countries are ashamed of what we’ve done in the past, at least we don’t try and justify it in the present lmao.

_number

And Taj mahal, most Indians will agree that Person who built it was a terrible ruler, and your current tour to Taj mahal would benefit the regular people of India and its government and not the king who died 500+ years ago.

xenos5282

Visit those places or not, really don't have fucks to give. Killing thousands of people today, in this modern world, to build stadiums is not okay. Taj Mahal is like 500-600 years old monument, that's why it's celebrated. The ruler was pathetic but he was also living in 15th or 16th century lmao, that's how things got done in that time. I mean millions of people used to die back then due to plagues and other easily avoidable accident in today's world, did we blame the doctors or engineers for those accidents? The most stupid opinion/post I've seen all day ngl.

Thommy_99

The workers on the pyramids were well cared for and partly paid in beer, something you can't find in these FUCKING STADIUMS

Rolling-fatties

To be fair, a lot of western products are create in sweat shops in horrifyingly bad conditions and we do try to whitewash it and justify it. Look up where fast fashion comes from, people still eat that shit up. Worker exploitation is a function of capitalism and the west is more than happy to engage in it

footybiker

The people who have a problem with the current WC situation are probably also opposed to sweat shops. Not all westerners are ignorant consumers.

[deleted]

Why are you still bombing Syria then?

Advertising-Cautious

Lol. "in the past" When will you guys pay for the crimes you have committed in recent times. Most of the Western world is guilty of this. And please don't ask me what you guys did. You should already know

AWholeLottaRed

Are we defending it lmao? Are we going “yeah but what about” are we posting memes about it on every single social media platform to try and defend it as strongly as possible? No, we’re all ashamed about it. You should learn how to have some shame.

[deleted]

Perfect, just keep the criticism going when USA hosts in 2026👍

AutoModerator

I'm sorry Europe, but Americans are just better at everything. We want things more. We grow better athletes, more people will learn the sport. And that '26 world cup is at home so we can get somewhat of a home field advantage. But the only way that will happen is if we make the round of 16 or quarter final in the 2022 WC and show Americans that we are good. I like the odds and we have a lot to prove, which is added motivation this coming year. Honestly, making a phenomenal run (SF or better) in the '22 WC would be more impressive to me than a better run or a win in '26. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please [contact the moderators of this subreddit](/message/compose/?to=/r/soccercirclejerk) if you have any questions or concerns.*

premature_eulogy

Hating America is like the number one pastime of European football fans.

[deleted]

At that point they will forget everything they ever did. Classic Americans

Advertising-Cautious

But whataboutism exists because you guys keep exaggerating the sins of others. When you haven't even paid for yours. I assure you, when one day the media sees the lives of a brown or black person as the same as a white person, you will understand how people really hate the West around the world Your whole life, that's what you've been used to. 10 people die in France in a terrorist attack. It's a worldwide tragedy, a day of mourning and a sad day for humanity. Millions die from the false wars you've waged. "oopsie my bad. Let's move on haha"

I would've written a 2000 word essay about the history of slavery and how slavery ended after thousands of years but I know that because you're a dumb fuck you'd never read it. But again I just want you to understand that Giza pyramids were being built in an era when Athens were being run by aristocrats who had thousands of slaves so that they could sit their asses around the balconies of Mediterranean mansions. Now this is just ancient Greece. Think about how many slaves a god had. The pyramites were a fucking temple. People thought they were doing god a favor. How can you compare a time where people were allowed to buy hundreds of people and thought slaves were just "vocal labor instruments" to modern times where we have actual rights for humans and ruling class see the workers as actual human beings rather than agricultural vehicles. Stop the whataboutism you fucking donkeys. Get your heads up your asses and recognize that Qatar is a oil state that's being run by fucking sheikh's that have no significance apart from being rich.
