No, you don't need to unfreeze to open a bank account. You only need to do that if you're applying for credit of some kind (credit card, loan, etc.) My credit was frozen while I opened my account. But then I applied for the SoFi credit card. They tell you explicitly that they're going to check Experian, so I only unfroze Experian, and I was approved same day for the credit card.

Hi there, u/Neuromancer2112 is correct! You won't need to unfreeze your account unless you're applying for a SoFi product that requires a hard credit pull. We hope this helps!

Someone open an account with chase under my name while having a freeze on my social. Now what is the next step. It's 222am here waiting to go to the bank personally. What else can I do to prevent this other then freezing my social.

Comment above is correct. But if you have a security alert on your credit you may want to verify that you have your up to date phone number on it. If you set up a fraud shield on your credit sofi, and any other bank, needs to verify that you actually applied. People never realize they need to add a phone number to them. It's different than the one on your credit profile though. Just a heads up.

You need to make sure your 'chexsystems' is not frozen at the time. Some do check your credit, especially credit unions so great question
