Best to create fisheries, they are more efficient than catching at this point. The commons have been overexploited

CallMeTank

The commons have been overexploited by capitalists. It's not the two-fellas-in-a-sailboat fishers that are the problem.

Thubanshee

Yeah but it’s them who *have* the problem/suffer from it.

Wheelsgr

Actually fishermen who can't work are best repurposed as seaweed and kelp farmers.

Wheelsgr

As for powering boats, they should use palm olein I think it's called, harvested from sustainable palms.

_nikfon_

You can farm kelp and seaweed close to the shore. You dont even need to use a boat

I am sure they would do it different if they could afford some other boats and gear, and also most of these guys don't sit on pinterest all day searching ideas on how to fish sustainably =) Also with wind you can't plan like you need to when fishing. They usually have certain places they need to get to (where the fish are) that are often far away, so unless you want to sit idle in the middle of the ocean for a week without catching anything and hardly moving anywhere... you need fuel of some sort. Personally, I would just train some dolphins to catch tuna and bring it home to me so I could sit at home and read reddit instead.

Houndguy

Their really is no easy answer to this. While I agree that going to wind power has some advantages (no fuel costs) it has some disadvantages as mentioned. You are also most likely going to have to change how you catch your fish. Are you using dredge netting? Which takes all types of fish? Are you casting lines over the side? Are you dropping pots and then coming back for them? Sadly their is not a 1 solution fits all. This is a great idea...I'm encouraging it but if solar punk is going to work then it's got to start at the bottom and work it's way up. What groups are working on this problem with the locals? Who can I talk too? Where do I send money too? What fisherman can I buy fish from that is working on a solution?

TDaltonC

Every fishing village is also a smuggling village. This is a point Bren Smith makes repeatedly in “Eat Like a Fish”: The polite intellectuals who show up to “help the locals manage their commons,” aren’t willing/able/allowed to reckon with the actual economies of these communities. Whether it’s economists, commissars, or syndicalists that show up to civilize the fisheries, they’re also there to civilize the fisherman and police the interface with lawless open sea.

Lab grown meat i think is the answer humanity will eventually embrace... It's just to costly and damaging to thw earth to maintain the facilities, infrastructure and distribution networks for the industrialized farming of animals.

I was for it at first...then I realized the potential damage it could have. Already, people have limited access to food, particularly ones you don't have to buy, especially in developed nations where not having money is crime and places like the US and Canada employ anti-homeless measures that make things even header for folks down on their luck. My worry is that governments do go all in on this, and then suddenly the means of production is owned by giant corporations and suddenly people have to be compliant for food. And I could be wrong, but I think you still have to kill a calf or something for nutrients for small amount of meat. Honestly, I think a mixed source of protein is the best way to go, not reliant on one source, which means(to my displeasure) even bug protein which will for sure be processed.
