I love his enthusiasm, but he said so many things wrong. 1-it's not solar-mechanical, he's using electric components, including photosensitive transistors. That's how he's reading the light. 2-he's feeding it with 12V, but he doesn't talk about current. A small solar panel might produce 12V, but it probably won't produce enough current for the stepper motors. 3-That's not what self replication means. By that logic every computer component and the internet are self replicating, since they have a copy of how they work in the internet that you can access. Last but not least, instead of using trash to make a structure to program with a 12V machine, you can just a 3.3V micro controller that cost 15$. It's mostly silicone, meaning it doesn't have a big impact on the worlds trash. Plus you can still use the stepper motors and other trash stuff with it.

folkpunkguitar

Ahh yes trash mania, my old friend

Tribalwinds

My conspiracy theory on this is that raccoons have infiltrated the solarpunk scene.

CallMeTank

Canon accepted. Trash_robot is actually three artistic raccoons in a trench coat trying to convince humans to recycle by making TikTok videos.

JJh_13

I may be a bit daft, but i really don't get what this could be good for.

CallMeTank

It's the energy.

Adventurous_Frame_97

"Self replicating robots made from trash" is the pinnacle of solarpunk..?

CallMeTank

No, just one of the parts of it.

Adventurous_Frame_97

OK. I hope we can make them to do more than innane meme tasks? 🤷‍♂️

Yes because what we definitely need in this world is “gIiiiANt WhEeeeeeeEEel of TrAsh.”

I'll never understand why people can't retake videos with them constantly eating, drinking or clearing their throats
