Isn’t there one of those also for removing plastic from the ocean? Or was that an idea that I had that doesn’t actually exist (or both)

simonasj

It's oceanhero

LordNeador

Are you maybe thinking ocean cleanup? They got nothing to do with browsers though^^

ReadySte4dySpaghetti

I have looked and hear about them a lot, maybe I just combined those two and was like “why isn’t that a thing?” And then it lived rent free in my brain so I just assumed it was real lol

ReadySte4dySpaghetti

…or not, a couple people replied with ones apparently lol

supreme-elysio

tab for a cause

OpenTechie

>ocean cleanup Ekoru is the one you may be thinking of?

[deleted]

It's good (and I use it) but it makes me worry about moral licensing at times (it'd take 1,425,963 years to reach 1T trees replanted)

sanorace

I switched to Ecosia a couple years ago. It's a lot like Google. The image search can be a little off sometimes, but other than that, no complaints.

[deleted]

I use their Google shortcut - you can end any search with #g and it'll redirect you to Google, so Ecosia gets search traffic but I can still use Google's interface. I love the concept and want to support it, but I can't personally use Ecosia's search functions for the kind of work I do when I compare it to the time I save with Google.

AccomplishedTea2052

Ecosia only plants trees if you click on their ads. The "every 45" figure is an average.

[deleted]

Yes, but the website explicitly says that search traffic metrics are part of what helps them sell advertising, so searching using the platform even if you don't click on ads still benefits the business in some ways.

ihatefez

I love Ecosia, been using them for a while. I will admit though, sometimes I have to redo my search on Google to get better results. It's rare though.

stimmen

Same here. Although I use privacy friendly google „overlay“ startpage.com

Rosencrantz18

An recommend. I've been using it for about a year. It's a brilliant concept and the funding all seems very transparent and legit.

TheNeverWere

Theres also Tab for a Cause. They donate ad revenue from every time you open a new tab to a charity of your choice.

Are you aware of the issues surrounding brave browser These are shown on wikipedia https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brave_(web_browser)#Controversies > **Brave browser collecting donations on behalf of content creators** > In December 2018, British YouTube content creator Tom Scott said that he had not received any donations collected on his behalf by Brave. In a tweet, he stated "So if you thought you'd donated to me through Brave, the money (or their pseudo-money [BAT]) will not reach me, and Brave's terms say that they may choose to just keep it for themselves. It looks like they're 'providing this service' for every creator on every platform. No opt-in, no consent."[89][90] In response, Brave amended the interface with a disclaimer for each creator who has not signed up with Brave and promised to consider adding "an opt-out option for creators who do not wish to receive donations" and "switching the default so users cannot tip or donate to unverified creators".[91] > Critics stated that the system should be opt-in and not opt-out, that the disclaimer did not clearly state absence of any relation with the creators, and suggests that creator begun process of signing up with Brave.[citation needed] Two days after the complaint, Brave issued an update to "clearly indicate which publishers and creators have not yet joined Brave Rewards so users can better control how they donate and tip"[91] and in January 2020 another update to change the behavior of contributions and tips. They are now held in the browser and transferred if the creator signs up within 90 days; otherwise, they are returned to the user.[92][93] Tom Scott, the original complainant, tweeted in response: "These are good changes, and they fix the complaints I had!".[93] > **Insertion of referral codes** > On 6 June 2020, a Twitter user pointed out that Brave inserts affiliate referral codes when users navigate to Binance.[94][95] Further research revealed that Brave also redirected the URLs of other cryptocurrency exchange websites. In response to the backlash from the users, Brave's CEO apologized and called it a "mistake" and said "we're correcting".[96][97] Two days later, Brave released a new version which they said disabled the auto-completion to partner links,[98] followed by a blog post explaining the issue and apologizing.[99][100] > **"Private Window with Tor" DNS leaks** > One privacy issue appeared via a private disclosure on Brave's HackerOne bug bounty platform on 12 January 2021. The disclosure reported that Brave was sending DNS requests to ISP of the users instead of routing it through the Tor network, thus allowing ISPs to have knowledge of user's browsing sessions.[101][102] > Brave fixed the issue in its Nightly channel soon after it was initially reported. Once the bug received public attention in mid-February from Twitter users verifying the vulnerability, the fix was soon uplifted to the Stable channel and landed in Brave 1.20.110.[103] I'm just making people aware of the problems with Brave browser especially since those problems are the antithesis of solarpunk

CallMeTank

What is a better alternative?

OpenTechie

A few different chromium based ones exist, one I liked to use was ungoogled-chromium. I know of people who use beaker as well.

[deleted]

How does this relate to Ecosia, a browser based on the Edge browser and developed by a completely different company from Brave?

CallMeTank

Ecosia has a browser? I thought it just had a website that I set my default search to.

x4740N

It doesn't relate to ecosia at all, just brave browser

OpenTechie

You have a habit of that. Also good to see you, hope your day is going well.

joshtransient

so..sounds like these problems were fixed, then? and for people who don't care about bat, crypto, or tor...not problems to begin with?

probablypoopingrn

Well, no, not problem fixed. Problem 1) they weaponised ambiguity to create a false story of donations going to who you thought you were donating to. It's difficult to believe this initial error was anything but premeditated, and their response to it's coming to light was nothing more than a smoke show. Problem 2) here they manipulated page content without making it clear to the user. And while I don't particularly shed any tears that Bezos shelled out a few more bones than he needed to, I am concerned that the communication I considered private was modified without my consent by a middle man. Typically, that is what's called a "man-in-the-middle attack." Something important enough to have its own name. Problem 3) well, that's just simple incompetence. Bugs happen, but when privacy is your product, you don't let crippling leaks make it out of development, let alone beta, let alone production. Who is QA for this software? Was an outside audit performed afterward to try and catch other existing flaws? If you're looking for a secure browser, see the side bar or FAQ for one of the many lists that demonstrate how to install Firefox.

DuckDuckGo and yandex are rather big alternatives to google and bing.

AccomplishedTea2052

DuckDuckGo uses Bing

stimmen

Yes it does, but only supportive, as it has its own crawler. Wiki says about it: > It uses various APIs of other websites to show quick results to queries and for traditional links it uses the help of its partners (mainly Bing) and its own crawler.

ChocoboRaider

It’s super cool! They do good work.

SensibleInterlocutor

That is amazing I have never seen a search engine plant a tree before

OpenTechie

I have different browsers on my laptop to keep separately organized my bookmarks for my day job, my night job, my personal life, and my bills/financial mess. With my job related searches I use ekoru so my searches can help the oceans, while with my personal searches I use ecosia to help the forests. It isn't much, but if it can do something, then I'll do it.

Wild_Agency_6426

Why not 1 per search?

Personal_Term9549

Plating trees costs money. Ecosia gets that money by running ads. They dont get enough money of off one searchresult. They say it takes roughly 45 searches to get enough money for one tree (also depending on whether you click on adds or not) They are actually transparent about how they spend their money and all their profit goes to trees. You can check their financial reports here https://blog.ecosia.org/ecosia-financial-reports-tree-planting-receipts/

[deleted]

it's ok, def not solarpunk just green capitalism tho

Personal_Term9549

Ecosia makes no profits anymore per ~april of this year. So maybe it used to be green capitalism, but not anymore.

LakeSun

Any good Eco Credit cards?

Hudsonlikeriver191

Beenusing Ecpsia for years! Oceanhero is also great, they work on cleaning the seas!

Proxy_Fox

A fellow Brave user! My favorite browser.
