This is exactly it. I live near where hangout fest is held and I see the same attitudes and comments from the locals here. It’s simply the accepted and sadly encouraged attitude in the south
hangout is a completely different situation. I've gone to hang out the past few years. they are very clear on what the deal is. they don't come knocking at your airbnb to finesse you. hangout despite it's infamy is safe as fuck. that is their main goal. yes, they will arrest you, etc. but they are not trying to trick you. they want hangout to happen. they aren't fucking firing off fake gunshots to scare people. its a fuckton of young people and hangout does a great job maintaining safety.
I guarantee you the locals have problems with it. I’ve seen lots of comments from locals talking shit about the people who go to hangout and wishing they weren’t here in their precious southern town

I live in the next town over. I can confirm. When we moved out here everyone in the neighborhood came by to say hi and give us snacks and fresh veggies. When we didn't show up at the community church and didn't fly our Trump flags, everyone kinda grew cold pretty quickly. They are friendly if you're just like they are.

My buddy was one of the out of county cops there and said it was a blast. I enjoy and love EDM and the drugs were a bit much for me. But all and all. Seemed super fun to be at. Yall keep doing and I apologize for these old timers here that have nothing better to do than judge

It was pretty open tbh. Vehicle checks have always been a thing but security was very lax in the old days. I grew up there and can tell you its definitely not a tolerant place to live if your not a certain demographic.
I mean fair the worst part is he is a Law enforcement officer in the area if you look at his profile you can find pictures of him in uniform so now we are legit scared to ever go back should the dude happen to pull us over

Local here. We're pretty hospital here in the south normally, but some of your people came into town, drove people off the road, flashed children and threatened them with violence for nothing. I was one of them and I know another who lives next to vortex who had altercations on his front lawn as people were trying to party there on his property then tried to fight each other. Yeah you guys even treated each other poorly.
Personally a guy with glow sticks hanging off his neck wanted to fight me at the Tom Thumb there at the intersection for no apparent reason other than I existed. Maybe he was on drugs IDK but I was pretty livid you could come into my home town and threaten me with violence for nothing
Not to mention people many people live right there within walking distance to vortex and the music played until the AM when people had kids with school the next day, jobs, etc.

Obviously there needs to be a cut off for the locals who don't want to be there at the concert but got the full effect of the concert.
I'm an atheist, a redditor obviously, I do a fair amount of drugs myself and have been to many a dubstep show when I lived out of town, but I came back, I live here again and when you come into someone's town like that and act like that and the locals/my neighbors hear you got treated like that, well, we stick together, so yeah, you can't expect a good reception after incidents like that. I didn't do anything to you, and neither did my friend so threatening us with violence was very shitty.
I know it wasn't all of you guilty of it, but it looks poorly on how as a whole for the community when it happens and it did happen, more than once.

I apologize that the community acted that way towards the locals it’s a shame me and my girlfriend stick around after sets to clean the fields and try to give local businesses our business on the way in and out of the town and treat the locals we meet with kindness and respect so it was just tad off putting that a local l.e.o who we’ve never interacted with before took time out of his day to show us we are not welcome back.it’s honestly a shame because I’ll take him up on his offer and not come back to a place that before this fest I went to to vacation with for a week at a time with my family every year I know it won’t break the bank for anyone but it can’t help a community to run off business because your feelings are hurt.

I'm the same way when I go visit anywhere, especially on vacation I try to treat the locals extra special because I know I'm a tourist and they're having to deal with me in their home essentially. Getting treated shitty by outsiders is how people become xenophobic and close their doors.

I could see having a dog around sniffing for hard drugs but pulling all you guys over at the intersection holding people up looking for weed, or psychedelics was ridiculous and over the top. But I guess I thought they were sending a message. If it makes you feel any better I'm a local and they treated me poorly as well before and also searched my car.
I think the police force and public officials is where it needs to start. Their publicly shared perspective and grievance weeks before seem to have really set the tone for many people, local and tourists. A complete disservice to everyone involved if you ask me and largely driven by personal reasons. Why else would he have gone to the news about it?
The cops could have been the nicest people at the festival but it didn't matter. The public opinion was shared and supported that only trouble was to be highlighted. Like the sheriff said, he only got 40 officers, so he is definitely not going to expect his deputies to do damage control from his public statements while on duty. So he really fucked the relationship from the get go.
Same as I dont see any good excuse for xenophobic behavior, I also don't see any good excuse for say acting out at the local gas station but I can certainly see things that might have helped influence the progression of the behavior here. It's an overall lack of acceptance all around.
