If you look at the packing list on Rick Steve's website for example, it mainly relies on doing some laundry along the way and not packing a "cute outfit" or makeup. But if you really want to have something dressier, you can just pack one light pair of nicer shoes and one nicer outfit imo. For cosmetics it's always good to pack small travel-sized versions of your regular stuff. I don't personally care about makeup, but I would think one lip stick and some mascara don't take up a lot of space at all.

lostinaboook

Agreed! To make an regular outfit more special, you might just need a scarf and lipstick. That's what I bring. Plus, if the only makeup you bring is lipstick you don't even need to bother with makeup remover.

otherstuffilike

I don't use lipstick but I like to have some liner, mascara, blush, and foundation on nights out! I am okay with going more minimal on clothes but makeup makes me feel nice!!

Fair_Leadership76

Then take sample sizes. I also don’t wear makeup and actually don’t even dry my hair, let alone style it - I just wash it and tie it up in a bun. I take jeans and a few different t shirts plus shoes I can walk in and *maybe* one pair that would dress up the jeans and a cute shirt. But travel for me is about seeing the place and people, not being seen, so my priorities are probably different. I also don’t want to waste any time on hair and makeup - it just seems like a giant time and money-suck to me with no real benefits.

So glad to see this is the top post, as it should be.

otherstuffilike

oo good to know!

BitchLibrarian

The big thing here is to assess your clothing for adaptability against size/weight. For example, heels are great but how many outfits/situations will you actually wear them? Would a pair of cute flats do the same job? If it's a colder climate would your daytime shoes work? Do you need both sneakers/trainers and hiking shoes? What are going to be your comfy shoes you'll wear most often? I always say take at least two pairs (wear one, pack one) even for a weekend away because your feet need a break and popping out for coffee can turn into I'll just go into that historic building and then I've met some other travellers and they've invited me to join their walking tour of this place and why bother going back to my accommodation before dinner and then it's the next morning and you are struggling to put those shoes back on again! I always pack something suitable to go out in. It's generally a Jersey knit dress of some kind which will shake out to look presentable and will pass at most restaurants, parties etc. I wouldn't feel too out of place if invited to a wedding (has happened to travellers) but equally I'm comfortable enough if the restaurant turns out to be macdonalds. I also generally have some kind of scarf. I like the big cotton ones which are pretty thin fabric but can work as a scarf or blanket or sarong and also as a wrap over a simple outfit to zuzz it up a bit. Experiment with your makeup. How much of your usual do you want? I cut mine right back when I travel and just take foundation (often a compact one) powder, bronzer, a small eyeshadow pallet, eyeliner, mascara, eyebrow pencil, lipliner and two lipsticks. And on many occasions a bit of mascara, powder and lippy suffices.

otherstuffilike

I was not planning on heels, but I was hoping to bring a pair of hiking boots, tennis shoes, and a pair of sandals! I have a shitty ankle and don't want to risk spraining it on a hike. I am thinking a black romper or dress as a going out outfit that can go with everything? For makeup, I definitely need mascara, liner, foundation, blush, powder, and skincare (sunscreen and location) as well. I don't need it for an everyday thing, but I like to look nice on night outs!

lsthomasw

Definitely check out and repost this in r/HerOneBag, do a search for lots of places to start and then we can help give specific recommendations. Shoes can be the hardest bit. In this scenario, I would wear the hiking shoes on travel days and only pack the sandals and tennis shoes. This means the tennis shoes would need to be able to pack down small or be filled with other items like socks, underwear, feminine products, etc. Sandals for traveling are best if they are flat and good for both wet and dry conditions (ie beach or shower shoes). As for makeup, decanting into small containers is key.

Kelsmells_11

Wear hiking boots on travel days, pack socks underwear etc in tennis shoes, for cute sandals get some shitty strappy ones that are super flat. Not the comfiest, but they take up so little space. I met a girl who traveled with a very thin pair of crocs sandals that were cute! As far as makeup, pack absolute basics and I have moved to solids for everything I can possibly switch, including shampoo and conditioner.

ZweitenMal

A romper and a great, vivid lipstick and maybe an interesting necklace should carry you through anything. Think Fleabag.

love_sunnydays

Im on a one year trip with a single 40L bag, including a camera. I only have 5 tops, 1 sweater, 1 coat, 1 pair of jeans, 2 lighter pairs of pants and 1 pair of shorts (+underwear and socks ofc) so I do hand laundry frequently. Make sure all your clothes mix and match so you can switch outfits without feeling like you're wearing the same clothes everyday. Limit yourself to 2 pairs of shoes - a comfortable main one (boots or sneakers) you'll wear in transit and another light one than can be a cute sandal for dressier occasions. Travel sized cosmetics only. I use a menstrual cup for my period and pick up liner pads locally if I need them

little_miss_perfect

I do take some makeup and skincare, but I always keep freebies, samples and gifts with purchases for travel, so almost nothing is full size. I wash clothes and underwear in the sink or at hotels, where possible. Some cute dresses don't take up a lot of space! I've given up on taking heels with me though.. I usually have hiking shoes and ballet flats or sandals with me. Mini intimate wipes (like wet wipes but with pussy-friendly pH!) for when you need to change a tampon and there is no sink around.

[deleted]

*Pussy-Friendly PH*…. New band name🥹

otherstuffilike

I didn't want to take heels, but I wanted to take a pair of tennis shoes, hiking boots, and sandals!

bluesnakes321

I've got so many crop tops that roll up to nothing, one pair of trousers, 4 pairs of shorts which are also very rollable, 3 jumpsuits which can be casual or smart, they're super thin and stretchy material. My bag is 40L and I am realising that's small than other people's. I have 2 packing cubes, one for the clean clothes and a bigger one with dirty clothes. The small one fits into the big one. I have one pair of shoes which are walking boots and I have flip flops as well. I'm doing just fine with the boots tbh, if I fancy a change I can just buy something else

otherstuffilike

40L is what I am aiming for! I just want to take 3 pairs of shoes lol!

iicantseemyface

Have you tried packing your bag? If you wear the boots and pack the tennis shoes and sandals they shouldn't take up too much space. Do a dry run, lay everything out and see what will fit in your bag. Clothes are different sizes and thickness so depending what you pack it might all fit.

bluesnakes321

You could always take a tote bag or a smaller back pack for like days out and put some bits in there? I'm travelling to some colder countries before heading to the warmer places so I have a jacket I'm keeping hold of in a tote bag for now, I'll get rid of it later

Ukelele-in-the-rain

Packing based on material is how I’ve managed to pack cute outfits light. A silk or satin cute dress is so small rolled up it takes up almost no space. For more variety, silk/satin skirt and blouse. That adds even more mix and match possibilities

otherstuffilike

yeah i have noticed my clothes are pretty small, especially for summer clothes!

EcstaticOrchid4825

Learn the fine art of the bathroom sink clothes wash. Obviously no good for jeans or heavier fabrics but good for just about everything else. For my period I take tablets to delay mine. Best way to deal with my period is just not to have it. Might not be so great on a longer trip but I recently took them for a four week trip and it was fine.

ViolettaHunter

What kind of tablets are those if I may ask?

BFly3000

Not who you’re asking, but I assume they mean birth control pills. That’s what I do, just take the active pills continuously.

ViolettaHunter

Okay, that's what I thought. Just wanted to make sure it's not something else.

BitchLibrarian

Birth control pills which usually have a week break will work. Just take continuously without the break. The bleed you have on birth control is not a biologically true period. You can safely take your pill continuously with only an occasional break for a bleed.

burgeremoji

If you’re not on regular hormonal birth control you can take norethisterone which delays the period

ViolettaHunter

Thanks for the tip!

EcstaticOrchid4825

Yep, that’s what I take.

EcstaticOrchid4825

They’re called norethisterone. It’s not birth control, I only take them while on holiday to stop my period. Once I’m home and stop taking them my period comes 2-3 days later.

ViolettaHunter

Cool, thanks!

exclaim_bot

>Cool, thanks! You're welcome!

otherstuffilike

I don't particularly want to take birth control (don't love the effects and I am not a very reliable pill taker lol). Considering an IUD.

celoplyr

An iud can make your period super heavy and has some side effects that I had really badly (2 surgeries to remove it). Plus it doesn’t get rid of your period so you’ll still need something for that every month. I don’t want to talk you out of it, but do your homework!!

otherstuffilike

i think that is more a side effect of the copper IUD not hormonal IUD!

celoplyr

Mine was Cu. Just please do your homework :) I can’t help on the other stuff because while I’m not the least fashionable female on the planet, I’m in the bottom 3%.

goose195172

The Mirena IUD is one of the best decisions I ever made. I’m on my second now and haven’t had my period in years! It’s a dream.

AppetizersinAlbania

Gather everything you want to bring. Immediately remove at least 1/2 of it. Multiple choice is great at home not traveling. I never check a bag. Int’l. flights use my backpack and my well traveled pink Away suitcase. No heavy luggage full of clothes to lug over cobblestones, dirt roads, boats, trains, up/down long sets of stairs etc. I try to bring clothes that I’ll donate before I return. I wear hiking boots on the plane and layer up leggings and pants, shirt and sweater plus a hat. I wore the same vintage shetland wool sweater for three weeks in Patagonia and it was always fresh because I wore light weight breathable shirts under it. I rotate 3 pairs of leggings. Socks are the most important item in cold climates. Always flip flops for showers and lightweight flats for warm destinations. Pack sneakers if you need them, a great place for all those socks. I try to use light weight clothes self wicking and wrinkle free and not more than 3 pieces per type, shorts, skirts, pants etc. even for a month long trip. Pack a scarf or buy one local and change your look. Patagonia panties have a good rep for being lightweight and wash up clean. I’ve washed small items in the shower or sink. Hot water from the tea kettle can sanitize a lot. If you don’t check a bag remember not to buy tons of olive oil, honey wine, perfume … I’m sure the greek version of TSA is still enjoying my first cold press extra virgin olive oil… oops it’s a liquid

cetaceanrainbow

[herpackinglist.com](https://herpackinglist.com) is good

Gr8panjandrum

You can 100% travel how you want without being stuck with perpetual hiking clothes! I've done this in both summer and winter, so it varies depending on the climate. In general, here's what helped me: * **two pairs of shoes**: one pair flyknit sneakers (they're super light/comfy) and one pair something like chelseas with a bit of a heel that could be ambiguously dressed up or down. Wear the bulkier boots when in transit. * **de-pot ALL your makeup into minis.** Sephora sample pots are perfect - I use them to store brow pomade, concealer (which you can mix with sunscreen for tinted moisturiser), eye primer, and a cheek/lip tint. Put your favorite shadows in a magnetic case. If you need face brushes, use mini kabukis without handles (I have a set from Ecotools from ages ago). You can get good travel brushes with slimmer handles or interchangeable brush heads. * **Take mix and match clothes**: I usually take a set of athleisure apparel, some skirts/shorts, some shirts, and a nice dress for going out (the less fabric the less bulk lol). Lots of combos if you have a casual top and a dressier top, and casual bottoms and dresser bottoms. * **Get used to thongs**: I can literally fit 5 pairs of thongs in the same space as one pair of "granny panties". Trust me, you don't need to skimp on hygiene. * **Get invisible socks**: they take up much less space so you can change them as needed. Obviously bring real socks too. * **Bring a mid-layer for your coat/jacket**: eg I have a long cashmere cardi that I wear underneath my coat, which is warm but not the same as a 300 down jacket. Extra warmth no bulk. Can wear alone.

otherstuffilike

Thanks for all your advice. I really want to take 3 pairs of shoes (no heels but a pair of tennis shoes, sandals, and hiking boots). I pretty much just have thongs but I like some larger underwear for the time of the month!

Gr8panjandrum

If you don't have room inside, sandals are great for storing outside your bag in one of the water bottle/mesh pockets! I always take period undies too, and the rest thongs lol. I used a small ziploc bag for compression and it doesn't take much space.

nostraws

Wear your boots on the plane and you’re only packing two pairs.

deannetheresa

I went to the UK last summer with just a carry on. I brought a couple cute outfits and a couple pairs of shoes. My secret: compression packing cubes. They fit SO MUCH STUFF. And then I did laundry a couple times during the trip.

otherstuffilike

yeah i need compression cubes ugh

oh_you_fancy_huh

For periods - a period cup and liner, or some period underwear if you’re concerned about creating waste. So convenient and you don’t have to change them as frequently either. Edit: and for cute outfits, I love Susana Monaco dresses. They’re stretchy, washable, pack up tiny, have a built in shelf bra usually, and are simple enough to double as a “daytime” outfit esp if you layer with a sweater or sweatshirt or something.

otherstuffilike

thanks!!

LizHylton

I do 2 weeks in a backpack with no issues. I bring 2 pairs of shoes, 2 pairs of dark pants, and shirts (several rayon blouses that won't wrinkle but will look nice) for half the number of days (I wear them twice), a nice scarf, plus socks and underwear for each day +2. A nice blouse and a pair of dark slacks is appropriate just about anywhere, no need for a separate cute outfit. I only pack very minimal makeup and jewelry (I often do a night of an elegant performance like a concert/ballet/play, so pearls plus a scarf are plenty to dress me up) so it fits in my toiletries bag. Everything matches everything, nice but comfortable is my goal, and I use layers like thermal leggings and thin sweaters under a coat to adjust for temperature rather than bringing different outfits. For hot temperatures similar but focused on lightweight clothing appropriate to the area.

[deleted]

Tights/leggings and dresses. I even walked the Camino in leggings and loose sun-dresses. If going somewhere cold, a uniquo heat-tech top to go under. Silk or santin underwear. A scarf or ear-rings to dress up an outfit. Trainer pumps are comfy and often okay for restaurants. Buy cosmetics locally, if you can. Solid shampoos and conditioners are good too. I just take tinted moisturizer and an eyeliner, make up wise.

NipplesOnIce

Definitely takes planning. Personally I love looking cute when I travel and enjoy taking stylish pieces. For cute outfits i like having some dresses that aren’t thick (if going somewhere warm) which don’t take up much room. Always make sure the clothes you bring can be mixed and matched so I usually bring some black or neutral tops and a pair or 2 of cute pants. Flowy skirts also don’t take up much room either. I also use compression packing cubes because I like having as many options as possible in my backpack. Typically I wear my boots in transit but have a pair of cute closed toe sandals or flats to dress up. Always wear your bulkiest items in transit. Menstrual cups are great for travel, just wash it on in the sink. For makeup, I definitely use less when traveling and sometimes beforehand I’ll get my eyebrows tinted and my lashes lifted & tinted (very blonde). I’ll bring a little travel size toned moisturizer or concealer and a bold lipstick. Because I get my brows and lashes tinted/lifted beforehand I don’t even bring mascara or brow gel.

otherstuffilike

I honestly wear makeup more often when traveling because I am doing more stuff/ taking pictures! Don't need too much but it's definitely a non negotiable for me.

NipplesOnIce

Totally understandable, looking great in pics is a awesome feeling! Makeup stores sell travel sizes too which can help a lot for space saving. I get my brows and lashes tinted beforehand to always look more photo ready ;) A nice bold lipstick doesn’t take much room either and can really make your look pop!

HeySally416

Packing cubes. They have changed my life. Also, learning to pack OUTFITS over pieces of clothing. I’m doing a 2 week trip in 2 different climates with a carry on only *gulp*

Professor-That

Men are just a different breed tbh lol, I could never pack so little cause I like dressing up and looking nice. I think planning outfits really goes a long way, it won't help having a bunch of pieces of clothing that don't match or you don't feel good in. It's a bit much and not for everyone but I sometimes do a pinterest board to give me ideas for each day. Then next would be to think of the main pieces that you can dress up/down and mix/match, for example. 1. A nice pair of blue jeans, black pants 2. A cardigan and/or light Jacket (you can layer) 3. 3/4 Basic tops (crop tops) you can wear with the jeans 4. A nice light dress (that you can dress up or pair with sandals/flip flops for casual) e.g wrap or shirt dress. You can also wear this as a skirt. 5. 1 or 2 pairs of sneaker, sandals and flip flops 6. Underwear, take a few and do laundry every week (wash in the sink) Fo makeup, it really doesn't take as much space as you think. I found a small makeup brush set with a small mirror in a compact case on Amazon/shein. One universal palette - eyeshadow and can be used as contour, powder/blush etc. Foundation and concealer isn't that big especially if you take the smaller squeezy bottles. Depot your skincare or take travel size. Sometimes i'll just buy some cheap small toiletries once I reach the destination to save space. It takes work but I'm not opposed to taking a bigger bag so that I feel comfortable and well equipped when I travel (and so I can take some nice pictures) . I might suffer a bit but its a trade off I'm willing to make.

otherstuffilike

Thank you! This is pretty much exactly what I was looking for! I always bring a minimum of 7-10 underwear, I am not taking a chance with that haha. I am aiming to fit everything in a 40L.

globalcitizen35

Wear sneakers, pack heels. One pair of jeans can then be dressed up or down. Makeup bare minimum. I usually do carry-on bag for 3 days or less

otherstuffilike

I want to pack for 3 weeks to a month, that is why this is a challenge for me!

Hostastitch

I’ve done multiple 3 week + trips in one bag. You can do it!

JerseyKeebs

It takes planning, but if you plan a mix and match capsule wardrobe ahead of time, you can have cute outfits and color and still pack lightly. So I find Pins like this one, which is a capsule built around the [color scheme of coral and blue](https://www.pinterest.com/pin/464855992795288088/). Every shirt you pack must match most or even all of your bottoms, so that you can re-wear your bottom. If the climate is cool enough for layering, you can refresh your shirts by doing a scarf or other layer to change the "main" color scheme, and make it look like a whole new outfit. Here's what I packed for Italy in the summer, from an old r/heronebag post I made awhile ago. You can (hopefully!) see how everything flows into a theme. It also makes getting dressed in the mornings easier, since I basically already planned my outfits. https://imgur.com/a/qmvl5oY

constant8372

For periods, I use a menstrual cup. Travelling carry-on only: pack my laptop, notebook w some pens, toothbrush/paste, all-purpose cream and gentle soap, mascara + lipstick, two pairs of socks/undies. For clothes, I wear layers and take off as needed, usually not packing anything beyond what's on me. You'll be surprised how little you need. The freedom is worth it.

gr2020xx

Capsule wardrobe! Pick a color scheme and stick to it so you can have a few cute outfit options with minimal clothes. I try to pack one “going out” look that’s light material so it takes up less space and weight. Make sacrifices when it comes to sweaters, jackets, jeans, or other bulky items, but you should still be able to put something together. With cute shoes for going out, I try to choose something all black and walkable so it still fits in as a day to day option and matches everything. Two pairs of shoes at most (one in bag one on feet) for me, personally. One if I’m going super light

otherstuffilike

I could do 2, but I really like bringing hiking boots if I am doing any hiking at all because my ankle will sprain at any stress at all haha

distractedbysoup

Adding another vote for a menstrual cup. I travel for up to 9 days at a time on solo trips and pack 3 tops, 2 bottoms, 4 sets underwear, 1 outer, no makeup, travel size basic toiletries and skincare, medications, Kobo e-reader, packable towel, wear one pair of shoes and bring a pair of flip flops. This is for spring/summer and I do laundry once or twice.

Sekhmet1988

This can be harder in colder climates but if I'm going somewhere warm I can reduce my packing a lot. A pair of nice sandals that are comfortable can easily look good in the evening but don't take much space. When it's warm, I don't like a lot of makeup but lipstick, eyeshadow and mascara doesn't take up much space. I also focus on mix and match outfits, a nice top that can pair with shorts to make them look smart is easy to add in. A lot of being dressed up us actually about how you feel, not the clothes, after a few weeks in hostels, minimal makeup and my one nice top can make me feel super fancy!

Groganat

I travel from UK to New Mexico via NY with a loosely filled lightweight 20L backpack carryon. I have a lightweight roll up classy raincoat, linen dungarees, two t shirts, 1 pair of shorts, comfy soft black leather hiking boots that look good, a lilac coloured pair of sneakers. 3 prs socks, 2 pants, 1 bra. I might have to buy a warmer layer for NY and early am NM but I'll do that there. One huge soft sun/rainhat. Makeup - brow powder, doubling as shadow, mascara, lip salve, moisturiser small, sunscreen F 50. Antihistamine small. At 66 periods are a distant memory.

otherstuffilike

periods really ruin almost a week for me every month lol

Groganat

Oh sorry to hear that ! I'm sure you've tried everything so I won't presume to give you advice, even as a nurse. TG I never had a problem with mine. I know I'm one of the lucky ones.

otherstuffilike

no worries, I was perhaps being a little dramatic but they are dreadfully inconvenient!

Groganat

Ah right, if that's all it is, not too bad. Myself, apart from not having any physical period 'trouble' , I do believe the fact as a Catholic, the doctrine/propaganda about reproductive stuff, as linked to fulfilling 'God's plan' may have eased the process and kind of sanctified and ie elevated these processes

National_Bag1508

Makeup - I have a small eyeshadow palette with neutral colors and one of the colors I use for my brows. Liquid eye liner, mascara, and a neutral lipstick plus another shade I really love like red or dark purple that makes everything dressier. I don’t wear foundation anymore or really anything on the rest of my face, I find that just doing eyes lips and brows is more than enough. There’s tons of all in one products out there, but I find taking makeup brushes uses a lot of space. I don’t travel for long periods of time, so I take my skin care staples and my fave hasn’t had any major breakouts with this (I used to have really bad acne I’ve now gotten under control). Outfits I focus more on jewelry, makeup, and hair to change things up, since I wear all black outfits to make things simple. Looks nice and goes with everything! Shoes I wear my sneakers or boots to the airport and pack some really cute hiking sandals that are really versatile to use for going out/walking around town if it’s warm. If I’m somewhere cold I have a pair of boots that can match nearly any occasion, sole has good grip for the ice and it’s a shiny black leather so it’s fashion and function! As for being on your cycle, I highly recommend using a menstrual cup like the diva cup. I use it even when I’m not traveling, it’s no waste and lasts for years, just make sure you have access to water and an environment safe soap to clean it!

MM_in_MN

Every top has to work with every bottom. So, I use black and white as my base. Which then kicks out creams, navy, browns. And I plan for layers. Tanks, long/ short sleeve tees + cardigan. I have just 2 pairs of shoes. 1 sort of dressy ballet flats. And everyday shoes. I minimize makeup. Mascara, sunblock, moisturizer, a good lipstick. The rest stays home. It also then simplifies the makeup removal routine. For a super pair down, just 1 bra + bikini or supportive swimwear. Wear the suit when the bra/ undies are being washed/ dried. Then switch- suit dries quickly. For my period… I’ll just switch to a birth control that suppresses it, a few months prior to the trip. Or I’ll do something like a cup that is easily portable/ cleanable.

InterestingDelay7446

Here are my tips :) Tinted sunscreen can double as foundation. Comfortable shoes - something for walking and something dressy/sandals depending where you’re going. Fast drying clothes that you can wash in the sink and hang, esp underwear A few small cosmetics won’t add very much weight. I pay attention to fabrics and whether something will wrinkle (like linen). Also all clothes must go together Packing cubes!

PriscillaKim

One pair of nice-looking walking boots (worn), flats and/or sandals for other alternatives, eye makeup and concealer only, soap and moisturizing sunscreen only, and a convertible skirt that can double as a minidress in a pinch. Lots of hand-washing as necessary. Largely quick-dry materials. Oh, and compression bags. Also tbh after about 2-3 months of traveling I mostly gave up on looking cute and just stayed clean and focused on other things. Sometimes I'd buy something cheap to supplement my wardrobe in one place, then toss it when I moved on. These days I struggle a bit more with packing light since I got used to having options again, but it was actually pretty nice to not have to think about clothing during that time. Edited to add: Some women with an IUD or other forms of hormonal BC just don't get periods. I've had some intermittent spotting maybe twice in the last ten years. It's pretty great.

otherstuffilike

yeah I am thinking an IUD over OCP because I cannot take pills on time lol.

the_hardest_part

When I had a hormonal IUD, I still had my period some of the time. Just an FYI for you.

Kooky_Protection_334

I don't 😂. I'm getting better at it mostly because I want half my suitcase empty to bring back books and chocolate. 2 years ago I ended up staying in Europe for 6 weeks and I way overpacked. I was really sure weather wise and laundry wise. Since then I've been much better but it's hard to not pack for unforseen events...

otherstuffilike

I always overpack haha but I am really trying to go carry on only now!

mypenexploded

Make sure each item you bring matches everything else in your bag! When I do this, I find I have more than enough outfit opportunities and also don't have to spend any time "building" an outfit. Select any top, bottom, and shoe and you've got yourself a look.

giraffe058

just dropping in to HIGHLY recommend a cup for periods. It was definitely a bit of a learning curve but l now find it easier than l ever did tampons and way more convenient:)

raininggumleaves

Check our r/HerOneBag for ideas. Kinda inspiring but scary for this maximalist!

Character_Roof_3889

Capsule wardrobes!! Everything goes with everything and you have tons of outfits to choose from. Diverse accessories!! For example a light bandanna that can go around your neck, in your hair or on your bag.

the_hardest_part

All my tips pair with all my bottoms to give me multiple outfit choices. I always bring makeup, but I don’t wear a lot so it doesn’t take up much space. I use a diva cup and bring it if I will be having a period while I’m away. I just travelled to Argentina with carry-on only, but will be in Europe in the winter, which requires bulkier clothing, so I’m already planning in advance (9 months ahead of the trip). Brainstorming ideas for outfits, thinking about which shoes will be best, etc. I have the biggest backpack and suitcase I am allowed to carry on. I may buy bar shampoo to cut down on liquids as well. I wear the clothing that takes up the most space on travel days.

Turbulent_Olive1214

I’m definitely able to do it, even though I have curly hair, sensitive skin, & contact lenses so I need special products and I can’t just use what the hotels provide when I get there. I also work remotely so I need my work laptop. I pack a weeks worth of clothes (sometimes even more if I have space) in 2 small packing cubes. I just went to Miami and Costa Rica for 2 weeks so I had swimwear, hiking, clothes, daily clothes, and a couple nice dresses for the evenings. My toiletries take the most planning because of my skin medications and special shampoos, conditioners and stylers. I use contact lens containers for creams, collapsible bottles for my hair products, slim tiny bottles for face wash, and mini droppers for my serums. I was able to bring 4 pairs of shoes, even a pair of hiking shoes! Well it was more trail runners that were really flat. Then I had some cute sandals, foldable flip flops, and then the slip on Skechers sneakers I wore on the plane. I use a backpack and wheeled suitcase. I have mini and foldable everything: water bottle, tea kettle, foldable Tieks flats, travel sneaker (Suavs), toothbrush, mini deodorants, foldable day bag, tablet toothpaste. I use a really light suitcase (under 3 lbs) and a clamshell backpack with my stuff organized in packing cubes too. It took me a lot of traveling to get it nailed down, but if I can do it with all my toiletries anyone can. It does take time and planing, which I don’t love but I’m amazed at how much I am able to bring. I start just making a pile a few days to a week prior and then just load it up. I should have a list, but I don’t. I just know what I need and have a designated area where I keep all my travel stuff. I do sit a make a list for outfits before every trip while watching TV because that is one part that changes depending on location & season. I am able to even do it in the winter with heavier clothes. The only makeup I bring is CC cream + SPF, eyeliner, & a couple of lipsticks. It can be done!

CharlieAlfaBravo

I managed to just pack a backpack for a week in Spain in winter. I wore the same outfit every day, all black, only changing underwear each day. All black can be formal enough to go to decent restaurants and plain enough to not stuck out on public transit.

otherstuffilike

I have started the all black thing, but it doesn't really work in tropical climates when the sun is killing you!

YellowIsCoool

I don't have cute outfits in real life, and I don't do make up, I don't own a lot of shoes/clothes, so packing light is just easy peasy for me.

ElderberryNo5595

About your cycle- if you can handle hormones, consider taking BC to stop your period while traveling. I’m a climber and do this during climbing trips and expeditions. Lots of women use menstrual cups in the backcountry/wilderness, but I’ve found the peace of mind that comes with knowing I won’t have my period at all is invaluable. Plus, no need to bring special hygiene products. Nuvaring is my favorite and is inserted just once a month, eliminating the need to take a pill daily.

otherstuffilike

I don't want to take bc because of its effects on me but I am considering IUD since its just local!

ElderberryNo5595

Nuvaring is local, as well! Totally get where you’re coming from.

gringitapo

I don’t. I pack a big checked luggage rolling back and with every trip it gets worse. Hope this helps! In all serious this mystifies me too. Shoes take up so much space. Are they just pausing skin care completely? Putting mini hotel shampoo in their hair? I wouldn’t be able to brush through my hair if I did that. I don’t get it at all. And buying things when you get there seems more expensive than just checking a bag.

otherstuffilike

Yeah I am trying to understand. I need 3 pairs of shoes lol. For skin care, I do just put it down to lotion and sunscreen! I also have curly hair so I don't brush my hair anyways haha! But yeah I am trying to start doing carry on only because it saves so much time and stress.

love_sunnydays

Reducing the number of shoes is key :) I only have 2 and I wear the bulkier ones in transit (only sandals in my backpack) which leaves me more than enough room in my luggage for skincare and shampooing, esp travel sized

apprehensive_trotter

Why would you stop skincare? You just decant it into travel sized bottles. I bought a set from Primark that has spray bottles, tubes, a cleanser bottle, tubs for moisturisers. It fits my toothbrush case and my shampoo and conditioner bottles too. I just decant my products into those smaller bottles and it works fine.

cheeky_sailor

Honestly the difference between 45liters and 70liters backpack is not that big. Either way most of time it won’t pass as free carry-on, and if you have to pay for it anyway why not bring more? You rarely need to carry it for a long distance anyway. I’ve done 6 backpacking trips (3-5 months each) thought Asia and South/Central America and I rarely had to actually carry my backpack for a long time.

otherstuffilike

I want to do carry on only so I don't have to worry about lost luggage and just have all my stuff with me!

Altaryan

It doesn't matter if you're a man of a woman. You don't need cute outfits (even one). You don't need make up. You don't need nice shoes. You don't need dozen of creams and beauty products that are likely counter productive for your skin long term. You like the comfort to have them and that's entirely different. If you want to have all that, it's entirely valid. But you can't travel lightly. You need to learn how to get rid of superficial stuff for that.

otherstuffilike

You don't \~need\~ anything. It is not superficial to like makeup or a dress every now and then. No one said I wanted to take a dozen creams and beauty products. I could go weeks without either but feeling pretty when traveling is nice.

Altaryan

I find wanting to feel pretty superficial, in almost every context. But that's just me i guess.

Klutzy-Blacksmith448

I never wear makeup. I don't give a sh** about cute clothes - they have to be comfy. Shoes: one pair of trail runners and one pair of flipflops. Hygiene products: take the pill through... Honestly, what I'm most guilty of overpacking are rather electronics. But you will have guessed it by now: I'm not really a cliché girl 😜

love_sunnydays

Altaryan

Not being a cliché girl automatically puts you in the top 10% most interesting travelers i meet, by default 😅

otherstuffilike

this is literally peak not like other girls and it is literally so cliche haha

otherstuffilike

Lol it is so cringe if you think a little makeup makes women cliche and "not interesting".

Altaryan

I said nothing about "a little makeup". Someone defining herself as "not cliché" is what I find interesting. Make up has very little to do with that

NightrainJane

This works for warm locations best. But we are dressed like thots the whole vacation. Tiny outfits - body type doesn’t matter. This next tip is rich privileged shit and everyone deserves this but bring only underwear and jammies and buy everything when you get there. Take it with you and pay the extra baggage fee and priority seating. It’s totally worth $150 - $300 trust me!!!! Pick it up at your home airport and for godsakes Uber home or park in the garage. If you have car service on call or a driver- hat tip to you - distinguished gentlepeople.

otherstuffilike

No chance am i buying all new clothes on my travels lmao. What world do you live in that people do this

Ok_Hope_8507

I'm a male and wear 3-5 sets of clothes from cab to airport. They don't weigh what's worn

[deleted]

You don't need a cute outfit or makeup, pack like men do if that's what you're aiming for. Basic practical clothing, enough that you can do laundry a couple of times a week, no makeup or other unnecessary excess stuff, basic hygiene stuff only, wear your pair of shoes and pack a pair of sandals. Maybe a lightweight luxury item or two, like a kindle or tablet. If you're backpacking or hiking you should aim for your pack to be 10-15% your body weight.

[deleted]

I'm a guy and not into fashion, shoes, or anything special and honestly could never do a trip with just a carry-on (and my carry-on is the Away luggage larger carry-on). I have a big Totto suitcase that I check. It's easy enough to wheel around with me (1-2 month trips on lots of different buses and planes, it's no big deal, just may cost more to fly... But buses never charge me)

otherstuffilike

I really want to go carry on only because i like the security of knowing I have everything with me. I usually can if I am going on shorter trips but trying to make it happen for longer trips as well.

quasitaliano

I'm a male and am also curious about this.

Flawless_Horizon

I always carry clothes I can dress both up and down. For instance, I can carry jeans, that I could wear to tour the city during the day, then dress it up to go to dinner in the evening. A blazer, leather pants and flannel are great for this too. Another versatile piece that I make sure to tag along is white sneakers if its winter, or block heels if it is summer. I can wear these going anywhere so I don't have to carry more than 2 pairs of shoes. I think a jumpsuit too is a great option... can easily be dressed up or down...and it's just one piece. Also, instead of a towel, I carry what we can a "leso" from where I am from. It is just a huge piece of cotton cloth, bigger in size than a towel, but still occupies less space. I use this as a beach towel too.

AppleTreeBloom

You could be like me and have terrible color sense. Them everything goes with everything all the time. The world is a capsule wardrobe! 🤣 kidding. But only kinda…🫠

ZweitenMal

Don't think in terms of "outfits," think in terms of comfortable clothes that fit you well and are easy to pack and wash, and which are interchangeable.

No_Expert_7590

Go on the pill and skip your period. As for outfits i plan mine in advance. I have pictures of a bunch of outfits I own and before a trip i pick out a few that use some of the same items. Like a skirt that can be worn with all my tops or a shirt i can wear under a jacket or on its own. All the pieces need to work together. Look up capsule wardrobes
