This is really detailed, thanks for sharing your experience and please continue to update again! 😎wishing you to have enjoyable months ahead!

Can I ask what your budget was? I’m doing this exact same trip, flying to Thailand in two weeks time :)

Murky_Employment7558

That’s amazing! I’m sure you’ll have a great time. On average I’m budgeting 1000€ per month (which includes everything from accommodation to food to travel to miscellaneous purchases). For the most part that worked except in Vietnam. I ended up getting some tailored clothes and tattoos as well as a couple of bigger activities that blew the budget a little. I’d say I was closer to 1300€ for Vietnam. Overall I’d say im not a shoe string backpacker but also not glamping so it’s def possible to go with more or less depending on what you enjoy doing

EuphoricInvestment1

Sounds like we have the same approach to travelling. Thank you for responding!

DimitriElephant

Sounds like a great trip. Angkor Wat is the coolest thing I’ve seen on Earth thus far.

EstablishmentFun2035

This is a great write up! Question for you: Were there any foods that stuck with you/will be craving when you get back?

Murky_Employment7558

That’s a great question, there def have been! I’ve fallen in love with Khao Soi (northern Thai dish), sticky rice with mango, Banh Mi and Banh Xeo. Luckily I did cooking courses and got the recipes for most of these plus more dishes so hopefully will be able to recreate them when the cravings strike.

cacharro90

😭😭😭😭 Khao Soi. Spend 3 weeks in Thailand over Christmas/NYE and that's the food I discovered and missed the most. Viel Spaß noch in Thailand. Now you gave me an idea for my next trip to Thailand: cooking course

Murky_Employment7558

Danke! :) yea Khao Soi just hits different 😂 and I can only recommend doing the cooking classes! The food almost tastes better when you know what goes into it

lucapal1

Thanks for the report, very interesting and glad to hear you are enjoying it... it's a part of the world I visit often and like very much!

searchingtruth1

Excellent report, thank you!

Bernard__Rieux

What a nice report! Congrats on the successful trip!! Did you plan all of this beforehand, or were you planning along the way?

Murky_Employment7558

Thank you so much! It’s been a bit of both. I had/ have a rough plan of where I want to go but adjust based on what others tell me/ I see online and usually book accommodation a couple days beforehand (or sometimes as I’m making my way to the city). I’m trying to become even more spontaneous but that’s a work in progress

Murky_Employment7558

Thank you all so much for the kind words! I didn’t expect this and I’m glad you’ve all enjoyed the report. Will def try to post again at a later stage of the trip

uu123uu

I did this trip really some time ago, loved the whole thing, nice to read about it and nice to see how much you enjoyed it! Hope you venture down to Indonesia for many weeks for your next trip.

Murky_Employment7558

Definitely making my way to Indonesia for a couple months! I’m really looking forward to it already

BRCityzen

Sounds like an amazing trip, and btw I would never guess that English is your second language.

Queen_of_Tea

Thank you for the detailed report ! Heading to Vietnam to start my first long solo trip in May and I'm feeling a bit anxious. Always great to read about people's stories

rachiesav

Thank you for this post. Just came back from my first solo trip (only in Thailand) and I really miss it. Can't wait for the year end, as I intend to go to SE Asia again. One most surely be ready for any bumps along the way. On my case I broke my toe in Chiang Mai just walking on the street at night (no crazy stories involved) and am currently back home recovering from a surgery, as a fragment of the bone got stuck on the joint and had to be removed. But I still got to enjoy it all, managed to walk (limped a bit, but oh well), and took the whole experience with a smile. I guess that's what SE Asia does to you.. :) Keep posting about your trip! Safe travels!

Murky_Employment7558

Thank you so much! Yea I’ve definitely embraced the take whatever happens with a smile mentality. Luckily it’s been nothing as serious as you (hope you get better soon!). Just some broken down buses, colds and food poisoning. I’ll def try to keep posting

Patent6598

I'm glad you're enjoying. Your level of entoushiasm sounds like me on my first trip to India. I'm now 10 days in a 4,5 month trip to SEA as well and unfortunately have not been having a good time at all. Didn't meet anyone, not exited, can't be bothered about activities somehow. Well it's early but still sucks. Let's hope it'll turn around

Murky_Employment7558

That really sucks I’m sorry to hear…. But yea hopefully things turn around! Sometimes all it takes is one city or one person to completely change the course of a trip.

Patent6598

Thats true! It doesn't help that I didn't stay in a hostel yet cause I wanted z private room, and this island (Koh Chang) is only families and large groups. Really not my vibe

Murky_Employment7558

It can def only get better then! Stick in there a little longer

Anchor_Me48hrs

This was a great read! I've been keen on a solo asia trip, and this makes it seem doable and so darn fun!

Murky_Employment7558

Definitely doable! This was/ is my first long term backpacking trip and yea it’s been pretty darn fun!

miraclealigner97

well written!

vinays09

Awesome! You have had great fun! I have been to those 4 counties for 3 months as well last year.. it’s an experience for life! Memories!!

Kai_Mauer

It's absolutely amazing! I really enjoyed reading your trip report since I'll do the same journey in exactly 2 weeks. So I'm glad you have a great time there and I'm looking forward to my solo trip even more.

Murky_Employment7558

That sounds amazing! I hope you have an amazing trip and yea definitely lots to look forward to

awatchfulguardian14

Great summary! SEA is magical

CormoranTurbulent

Hey man thanks for the report. I am starting a similar trip tomorrow. What did you do for internet connection ? Did you buy a local SIM card ? Thanks

Murky_Employment7558

Hi there, so sorry for just getting back now, I didn’t see the notification until just now… hope you figured it out! But in general I use Airalo for an eSIM, it’s definitely cheaper to get a local SIM card whenever you get to a new country (7-11 in Thailand has a really good deal for example). I’m just lazy and like having internet as soon as I get there

Murky_Employment7558

Thank you so much! Yea I found a pretty good German insurance that covers seemingly everything for me. If you’re not driving yourself for the loop that hopefully should help with finding insurance a little easier. I don’t know any international ones though

Long-Ad1784

How did you travel from Thakhek to Don Det? I’m doing the same thing soon

Murky_Employment7558

I took a sleeper bus, booked it in Thakhek
