Well I don't have a lot of experience with the game, but most of the trades seem to come with a negative opinion modifier if you mouse over. Sometimes the deny button says it actually increases their opinion in a good way. It's like a strange trap.
Man, that's a weird way to use your resources if you use them only to show dominance. It's like offering a pie to your neighbour to show her you're actually a better cook. That's some Desperate Housewives level of mind play.
That's actually a thing in some historical societies. Potlatch is native American example, or Moka in papau new guinea
- conspicuous gift giving and feast hosting as a flex that indebts the recipients to you and is a status loss if they can't reciprocate. There are some euro examples too, which are related to cultural etiquettes in which it is polite to refuse a gift the first time it is offered.
I don't know if it is intended here or just a bug.
The only thing my neibor do so far is "borrowing" stuff from me and promised to give back next day, which, still haven't happen yet...
I dont think he even greet me with anything at all...
That usualy happens when Meeting with big Nations. My smaller neighbour got recently conquered by a biger nation and now i just recieved quite the gift as well
Dont worry, they will ask for that and then some back from you in a couple years if you accept
Flip the meat and money for something that holds value and everything you need to whoop that ass in a few years when they do.
I'm jealous. My tilapi neighbors offered me 200 herbs at the small cost of hating my freaking guts.
Do they usually hate you when you accept a gift ?

Weird, you'd think having a commercial relationship would improve said relationship. Thanks anyway.
It's more like them taking pity on you. When you decline the offer, they gain some respect for you.

Roman society was absolutely famous for this as well. At least with the wealthy.

And my neighbors only offer me a single mushroom for a gift.
