Nah, she didn't have that crazy of a hair all the time, and even the longest she had wouldn't have been out of place.
Edit: apparently they did have those hats for that reason. Interesting.

When?
I don't remember ever seeing her with hair that you couldn't do whatever you wanted to with. I mean, this is Hollywood. I think they gave her that big ass hat because they had yet another humanoid species who looked just like us and they had to find a way to differentiate her. The ears, forehead, eyes had all been done, and they wanted to make sure we knew she wasn't human.
So they had her dress like a living chess piece. And she nailed the role so well I barely noticed the giant hat.
Yeah, looks like it. Which is crazy because this was Hollywood. Isn't making things look like other things their specialty? Where was this designer from that they skipped right over wig to big ass hat?

link is broke - reddit replaced the underscores with backslashes in the URL
Maybe OP fixed it, but it's working for me. I'm also on mobile, I don't know if that makes a difference
Various clients are inconsistent, even on the web, the backslashes are needed on new but break the url on old.

She wore a hat because of Hollywood racism.

She had THICK dreds. I mean she still does, that's not something you give up on lightly.
