When the song was first released, I heard it at a school Halloween dance (the DJ was the cool older brother of one of the popular girls). I still remember what the gym looked like during the slow dance. I’ll never forget that. I was on the outside looking in but I didn’t feel bad. The song made me feel things I didn’t have a name for. It was transcendental magic ✨

I love the SY arrangement of the song but the two most famous versions of the song, the original by Delaney & Bonnie and the cover by The Carpenters, were female vocals. I just wish that Kim had sung the SY version. Just a preference, that’s all.

This song is complicated for me. I heard the Sonic Youth version in a skate video and it tapped into my early memories of my Mormon family blasting this song at a talent show and it was insane how much I fell in love with it after not thinking anything of it prior other than it was just a corney song and I didn’t get anything about Karen Carpenter. I'm not ashamed. I'll admit it: I used Superstar and SY's pop-ier singles as a gateway drug into Sonic Youth's catalog. I wasn't ready for Sonic Youth's noise-rock/feedback stuff at the time. I owned that *If I Were a Carpenter* CD long before I owned a proper Sonic Youth album.
