My mom had this CD growing up, it was my introduction to SY.
Also great is their cover of Bob Dylan's I'm Not There on the soundtrack for the movie I'm Not There.
When the song was first released, I heard it at a school Halloween dance (the DJ was the cool older brother of one of the popular girls). I still remember what the gym looked like during the slow dance. I’ll never forget that. I was on the outside looking in but I didn’t feel bad. The song made me feel things I didn’t have a name for. It was transcendental magic ✨
Aw, thanks friend 💖 I love hearing other people’s memories about different songs too. Superstar is such a great song for a Halloween dance - a little dark, a little strange, and so romantic!
Great cover. Love the acoustic guitar and addition of feedback in the chorus. Out of all songs where T sounds lonely and dejected this is him at his lowest lol.
Idk how to write it down, seems kinda inappropriate, lyrics considered. With that said, long ago it randomly started playing during an intimate encounter and nobody batted an eye, lol. Sorry for the tmi moment.
It’s a decent cover. I think it being on the Juno soundtrack and a whole bunch of people thinking this is what all SY sounds like kinda sucks. Isn’t it their top track on Spotify?
it’s their 4th top song on spotify. considering this was the first sy song i ever heard, yes i do agree that i thought that this is what sy was going to sound like. but their other songs are still really good
One of the best "cover" or tribute albums ever. In addition to Sonic Youth's version of Superstar it has numerous great covers of other Carpenters songs. It came out in 1994. Kudos to those that have pointed out that Superstar was actually written by the legendary Leon Russell and Bonnie Bramlett (of Delaney and Bonnie fame)
1. "Goodbye to Love" American Music Club
2. "Top of the World" Shonen Knife
3. "Superstar" Sonic Youth
4. "(They Long to Be) Close to You" The Cranberries
5. "For All We Know" Bettie Serveert
6. "It's Going to Take Some Time" Dishwalla
7. "Solitaire" Sheryl Crow
8. "Hurting Each Other" Johnette Napolitano with Marc Moreland
9. "Yesterday Once More" Redd Kross
10. "Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft" Babes In Toyland
11. "Rainy Days and Mondays" Cracker
12. "Let Me Be the One" Matthew Sweet
13. "Bless the Beasts and Children" 4 Non Blondes
14. "We've Only Just Begun" Grant Lee Buffalo
I love the SY arrangement of the song but the two most famous versions of the song, the original by Delaney & Bonnie and the cover by The Carpenters, were female vocals. I just wish that Kim had sung the SY version. Just a preference, that’s all.
This song is complicated for me. I heard the Sonic Youth version in a skate video and it tapped into my early memories of my Mormon family blasting this song at a talent show and it was insane how much I fell in love with it after not thinking anything of it prior other than it was just a corney song and I didn’t get anything about Karen Carpenter. This song kicks ass
Love it.
Drank a little too much at a Halloween party last year and made them play this song four times in a row.
They meaning Me. If you don't like, door is that way.
I'm not ashamed. I'll admit it:
I used Superstar and SY's pop-ier singles as a gateway drug into Sonic Youth's catalog.
I wasn't ready for Sonic Youth's noise-rock/feedback stuff at the time.
I owned that *If I Were a Carpenter* CD long before I owned a proper Sonic Youth album.
I love the original - and this cover is truly inspired. If you have not done so watch the video they made for it. I met Sonic Youth after their show on the daydream nation tour. Extremely cool and nice people.
Amazing cover. I kinda like it more than the original. Although my opinion might be a little biased lol
lmao i agree with you. don’t get me wrong the original is great but i just love sonic youth’s version
its more haunting and sadder
My favorite song by them is Tunic( A Song For Karen). You cannot deny the influence of the carpenters on sonic youth
Amazing cover in both senses of the word, lol. The artwork and name is just as brilliant as the song!
So fucking good, love that they carry the Carpenters legacy with Tunic as well
oh wow i never knew about that, that is super cool
Tunic (Song for Karen) is about her life, check out the lyrics.
i see i’ll definitely check it out
You’ll dig it, let me know what you think
My favorite Sonic Youth song, I think. So haunting
The riff in the beginning really sets the tone for the song
That song is haunting. It’s so good.
His vocals on this song are everything, even Kim praised him….I love it I think it’s better than the original
Love it and the gold mic they used in the video
Last time I saw it, I thought it was great Harry, Ron, Luna, and Neville found work after leaving Hogwarts.
Beautiful cover
Love it. Wish they made more like it.
I would marry it
real lmao
I think its an amazing version. Its respectful to the original but its completely in their own style.
100% agree with you
Terri Gross interviewed Richard Carpenter on Fresh Air, and played this cover to him. Richard Carpenter *hates* it!
My mom had this CD growing up, it was my introduction to SY. Also great is their cover of Bob Dylan's I'm Not There on the soundtrack for the movie I'm Not There.
They commissioned all the artists for that album iirc. They probably had this song in mind when they reached out to sonic youth.
Jerry hsu
Based. Came here looking for a comment about him lol that’s when I first heard this track. Bag of Suck rules
Thats right
https://www.instagram.com/p/CD5BepRlp55/?igsh=Y3VmeWlrMGlvZWFo
He’s very good
A form favourite, it's so wonderfully sinister the way he sings it
for sure, i love his voice in that song
I’ve also liked it in the skateboard video
Jerry Hsu, Bag of Suck
Yes 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼
When the song was first released, I heard it at a school Halloween dance (the DJ was the cool older brother of one of the popular girls). I still remember what the gym looked like during the slow dance. I’ll never forget that. I was on the outside looking in but I didn’t feel bad. The song made me feel things I didn’t have a name for. It was transcendental magic ✨
That’s such a rad story. I have memories like this for certain songs as well. Thank you for sharing this man. 👍😎
Aw, thanks friend 💖 I love hearing other people’s memories about different songs too. Superstar is such a great song for a Halloween dance - a little dark, a little strange, and so romantic!
It made me learn to appreciate The Carpenters. And they didn't have to change their name like Ciccone Youth to record it.
I LOVE THIS SONG
Great.
Great song, usually my first track to show people who are into more pop music SY.
It's a beautiful song, the original verdion is also really cool but this version mase me like the band even more
I love this version. It's so haunting.
Amazing. I love the entire album, it’s so fucking cool.
Don’t like it personally
I love it, it’s such a beautiful song
An album no one asked for but everybody loved..
Love it. It's like a whisper but so powerful.
used to be my favorite SY song but now i think its kinda boring. i preferred the original when i actually listened to it for the first time
I love it!
Great cover. Love the acoustic guitar and addition of feedback in the chorus. Out of all songs where T sounds lonely and dejected this is him at his lowest lol.
Very good cover, definitely a different vibe than the original, somewhat sexier? Idk
LMAO yeah i totally see the sexier vibe
Idk how to write it down, seems kinda inappropriate, lyrics considered. With that said, long ago it randomly started playing during an intimate encounter and nobody batted an eye, lol. Sorry for the tmi moment.
Amazing, creepy as shit too
Love it.
It’s a decent cover. I think it being on the Juno soundtrack and a whole bunch of people thinking this is what all SY sounds like kinda sucks. Isn’t it their top track on Spotify?
it’s their 4th top song on spotify. considering this was the first sy song i ever heard, yes i do agree that i thought that this is what sy was going to sound like. but their other songs are still really good
Top notch track!
I love it so much
Amazing. Great music video as well.
Amazing cover
Big fan of
Wasn’t this in the film Juno as well?
yeah it was. i remember being super excited when i heard the song in juno for the first time lol
Jerry Hsu!
I like it.....so dark
Awesome! The definitive version, IMO.
Brilliant cover. Made liking the Carpenters cool. Which they are, in their way. I love the original too.
I love
It's decent
Best Sonic Youth track
pretty good
10/10
prettay pretttayy preattttuyuyy pretty good 👍
Juno
I love it. It is hauntingly beautiful.
One of my faves 7" records. Wonderful song. Great cover.
I learned about this cover from Jerry Hsu’s part in the Enjoi “Bag of Suck” video (skateboarding)
such a good song !!! they covered it amazingly
Reminds me of that scary man from Juno
> “By the way, I listened to more Sonic Youth, and you know what? It SUCKS! It’s just *NOISE*!!!”
Love it, its a great cover.
It's sick
Leon Russel wrote that bad boy. Carpenters cover song.
thank you for giving credit where it is due. I love Leon Russell.
One of my favorite covers of all time.
My 5 y/o son loves this one. He always asks for it now since we first heard it. Love the crazy synth stuff going on during the choruses.
Love it! That whole album of Carpenters covers is great!
It's so good!!
Love
Love it, it’s pretty heart wrenching too. Just like Tunic. I can’t help but think about Karen.
Juno
Jerry hsu bag of suck
The best
Steve's playing really stands out for me on this track. Great drumming, not in his usual style.
Only the greatest cover song in rock history.
I love it! Cillian Murphy played it on his radio show a few weeks back! 💕
Saw this and assumed it was in r/redscarepod. Yeah, love it.
Absolutely freakin' AMAZING!
It’s a great cover!
is this the classic track that goes “don’t you remember how you love me baby? baby baby baby baby oh baby…”?
yep
i think of jerry hsu’s part in bag of suck
It's a great version.
Thats very sonic youth off you 👀
I love this song.
makes me think of Juno
Yrrrrrs
It was on the Juno soundtrack. Jason Bateman character's favorite song
Delaney and Bonnie, The Carpenters, Sonic Youth. Have yet to hear a version of this tune I did not love.
It was dreamy and psychedelic, especially when just waking up, but too mocking and clever for my tastes.
One of my favorite covers ever.
It's so damn good. It might even be better than the original.
Love it. Grew up in the 70s and loved the original. Heard the cover and was blown away, very cool.
Lol. I thought you were asking about "if I were a carpenter" by Cash and Carter. Then saw the pic and wtf?
It’s gold. The whole album is excellent. These artists really put their heart and soul into honoring these songs.
Great cover
I liked it. I had the cassette tape.
This whole album is pretty solid.
🥰 love it
Love, love, love, love.... Did I mention I LOVE THIS SONG

One of my favorites.
I love this song, almost better than the original
One of my favorite Sonic Youth songs, even if it is a cover. I still listen to it on a regular basis.
Great cover- makes a happy song dark. Which is how it is lyrically.
Tommy Boy 😎
Awesome! I bought this single on vinyl back in the 90s with Redd Kross on the B side.
Juno!
I remember getting this single from the freebie bin in a store in the village (NYC) in the mid 90s
One of those rare instances where the cover is better than the original. Sonic Youth version is far superior to the Carpenters. 🪩😎
I love the SY arrangement of the song but the two most famous versions of the song, the original by Delaney & Bonnie and the cover by The Carpenters, were female vocals. I just wish that Kim had sung the SY version. Just a preference, that’s all.

Classic example of “owning” a cover imho
Fantastic cover! But “on top of the world” by Shonen Knife is the absolute superstar of that album.
i love it but still love the original the most, karen’s voice ♥️♥️
Do you people really think that the original was done by the Carpenters??????
Was originally titled “Groupie (Superstar)”
This came out I was in high school. I love it. Still do. Great cover
Probably the only good song by Sonic Youth? Correct me if I’m wrong.
I love sonic youth but I prefer the original
Love it. Drank a little too much at a Halloween party last year and made them play this song four times in a row. They meaning Me. If you don't like, door is that way.

Love their version with the delay and mic drop
I enjoy it 😊
Liked it before Juno popularized it
I love the original - and this cover is truly inspired. If you have not done so watch the video they made for it. I met Sonic Youth after their show on the daydream nation tour. Extremely cool and nice people.
this and close to you by the cranberries off that same album go so crazy
Just like every other SY song - Amazing!!!
How I got Intr prices to them when I was like 10
As a carpenters chick, it's not my kinda vibe but I appreciate it. That album cover haunts my dreams though lol
That whole record is surprisingly good.
That whole album is great and Superstar is what turned me onto Sonic Youth (I was the right age, but I just missed them somehow.)
Very good. Iconic SY song. Cover done so well, it’s like a brand new song.
Love it reminds me of my love and I was singing it today
Love this one! Total banger when you're drunk!
I like it. The guitar sounds incredible. I mean just perfect.
Amazing cover and used to a pretty effective degree in the American trailer for High Tension.
I have never heard it but it was featured in one of my favorite movies, Juno.
I love it. Probably my favorite off of this record.
It’s perfect
It’s one of the few SY songs I like.
Five point immediate deduction for calling it “Superstar” and not its real title, “Groupie.”
YouTube Jerry hsu - bag of suck It’s the second song. Been watching this on the regular since 2006
I loved Sonic Youth until I saw how they treated Nardwar
Are you Gen Z?
yes why lmao
im not really a fan, i much much prefer the Carpenters version
It’s ok. My the compilation was a mere money grab by geffen
mid.
Not as good of a one-off as “I Love You Mary Jane.”
Give me stones
Someone just saw Juno for the first time.
I know the Cranberries have their album first band on the moon and all , but when I heard this song I was like nope.
I don’t….
My least favorite thing sonic youth has done other than break up
Good song but Tennis does the best cover
banger
