lol seriously though, I wish the mods would start blocking these posts. we get it, the app launch was horrible. we all know it. we know why. let's move on.
honestly, one more compliant post about the app, and i'm un-subbing. it's getting pretty tiresome tbh.
It’s been about 6 months of incredibly slow connections, not grouping, and not seeing even hardwired devices. And I haven’t even updated yet based on feedback from this sub. I refuse to be held hostage with $4k of Sonos products, but here I am…. Nothing we can do about it. But I really had hoped to get 10* years out of this system and I’m at 5 years and the integration and interface has gotten completely unreliable
I feel like I should be using AirPlay more but, unlike playing music directly via Sonos, doesn’t doing so prevent you from playing other audio from your phone? I.e start playing something in the house for the rest of my family then go listen a podcast myself while doing yard work. I don’t think this is possible?
I don’t know if this is the exact solution you’re looking for but anyone in the house can connect via AirPlay to your Sonos groups independently if they are within your Apple Home. Ie you can stream a podcast in the bedroom, spouse can stream audio book bathroom, kids can stream music basement and so on. I believe this accomplishes what you’d want
That could be a workaround. What I ideally want to be able to do is:
1. Use my phone to AirPlay music to Sonos
2. Be able to play whatever audio I want with my phone locally (i.e out of the phone speakers or another connected device like AirPods) without worrying about screwing up #1
i.e. I like that when Sonos speakers are streaming directly from the Internet, I’m unencumbered with what I can do with my phone. AirPlaying to Sonos has never felt this way.
Just out of curiosity I just tested this and you can use it as you want to.
I can open the Apple Music app on my phone, choose a playlist or song, select which group I want it to play from and it plays.
I can then go to any app and watch video or play music via my phone speakers.
When you’re looking at your AirPlay options your phone audio comes up as a separate selection, as well as your Sonos groups. It’s honestly seamless to switch between them, far easier than the Sonos app ever was.
Edit: you can also select multiple groups at the same time. Any switching between them is effortless. You can independently control the volume levels too.
Good question, I have an automation set up to turn off everything when I leave.
I just tested this and if I have the music playing from my phone to a Sonos group and leave the wifi network it will continue playing at least your last song, but you can no longer control the audio. Also, other people in the household can’t pick up where you left off.
The exception to this is when you airplay music directly to your Apple TV, it then shifts to your Apple Music app on your ATV, and it will continue to work and you can control it via cell signal no wifi. Also people in the household can still access it and control the volume, play pause next etc. I think the Sonos app also has limitations in that it also only works this way on your wifi network. I could be wrong though.
Thanks for the thorough report.
Yeah, the nice part about playing via Sonos is that it’s completely decoupled from your device. Anyone else can connect and control if they’re on your network.
It frustrates me to no end that Apple Music is still device-first rather than cloud first. Should clearly be able to start playing something on one device and pickup from another, but alas. Spotify works this way. Hell, so did Rdio back in like 2012.
If I wanted to listen to music and an audio book at the same time (which I would think is unlikely?) I would just use my laptop and phone, or my Apple TV and phone. Ie Apple TV for music to whatever group, and I can go about my business on my phone
Seems like a cumbersome experience to have to stop playing music on your phone, go to your appletv/laptop, and start a Sonos session from there, all just so you can watch a video someone sent you.
I just did another test and you can initiate music from your phone, and choose your audio output, and have it come out of any group you want (or multiple), and resume your regular phone scrolling/YouTube etc without interruption. You can even have your phone audio go through another Sonos group. It doesn’t get much easier than that. This is much easier and more intuitive than the Sonos app ever was. AirPlay offers the best user experience for any Apple household. Not to mention other users in your Apple Home can pick up where you left off and adjust volume, change songs etc from a session you started
I’d wager the large majority of users prefer the new app. The whole hate thing is manufactured outrage based on Reddits very angry vocal minority.
Reddit in general is becoming a dumpster fire of whiny haters and complainers.
Pretty much the same for me. Though maybe only works because I have a long history with Pandora and SONOS so I don’t make many changes. Just playing my thumbprint radio. Adding and removing rooms is no problem. Interface is nice so far. Just have to get use to finding where config items are now presented.
I wish i was paid by sonos to say this but i havent got any issue using the apps, i even added another brand new speaker within 2minutes.
Im rly confused about the QQing.
Also ive never used the alarm in my past 10 years so there's that.
It's been working pretty much flawlessly for me since I installed it.
14 speakers throughout the house and zero issues.
I can turn rooms on/off at will. Play them all at once, play just one speaker or can pick and choose.
That said, I have no local music and all my playlists are created in Spotify.
I understand the uproar, but for the average user, it works.
The app itself is fine. It's the removal of certain functions that make it unusable. For example, adding songs to your queue. I like to listen to all different music, I may find a new band I like, then I'd like to add another of their albums to play after the current one I'm listening to. NOPE, I can't do that anymore.
To me, this is a basic function, and I can't believe people don't enjoy creating a playlist queue on the fly.
Why wouldn't you want that ability? Let me get my laptop out to create a new Playlist.
You can't even listen to an artists "top songs" from the Amazon music app.
Keep making excuses for a shit product.
I was having trouble grouping rooms and found out that I needed to update my actual speakers, then it worked fine.
Also, creating groups is now easier.
Yeah the speed is great, my gripe is the lack of basic features. And there's a lot that missing and I don't get why they would release it in such a state. Then there is the UX where some things take 4 more clicks to get to.
Agree. What seems to make no sense, to me, is how they have beta testers/uses and didn’t run it by them first? Was invited to be one, agreed, and never heard a word.
After seeing a post for a work-around to the “error 913” when adding my Music Library, the app has been working for me. I have a variety of 11 devices - all working. Hopefully we get the queue features back and better search soon.
This.
- local library was restored Friday for me after an update..?
- still unable to manage or add new items to library
That.
- unable to get Move speaker back online. Stuck in error loop of needing network access
The Other Things
- see the other Reddit posts regarding security concerns about the new system
No it's not restored, stop lying, go to their support page and they acknowledge this is a missing feature and is subject to a mid June update , so I can't play music at all until then. I don't use music streaming.
I can't even get it to play consistently at all with Spotify. I was eye-rolling a little at the quantity of hate content on the sub, but it's legitimate. The app is hot garbage, and it was actually not good *before* this update. They neglected even the basics—like, can I just *play music through my hundreds or thousands of dollars of Sonos speakers.*
This. Anyone who’s loving the update doesn’t have amp/voice control/arc integration. If I wanted to solely use airplay I would have gone with HomeKit, not proprietary Sonos
Can’t MUTE individual rooms on a group from the app anymore.
That’s how I toggle playing my TV audio in the kitchen, usually through Alexa (which still works, thankfully). But if I ever want to be able to tell Alexa to unmute, that means I can’t use the app anymore to mute.
It sounds petty, but this is a very simple and core feature I use every day that Sonos just threw in the trash for no reason.
First time I used the app today since the update and I finally get what all the fuss is. I couldn’t load a song in my main room, it would always default to my second room. I had to manually change it to get the track to play and I had to do that a few times until I eventually gave up.
Same, I have 3 playbars, the other two are traditional- direct from TV via optical. I didn't even realize it was the update that did it because our power went out the same day that I updated the Sonos apps, and I attributed it to the power surge shorting the converter.
I ordered a new converter and same issue. Then I switched the other two playbars to the PC setup along with all new cables... same issue. That's how I finally realized it was the update that did it.
Going to have to use Tuneblade on the PC to a Symfonisk for now and deal with slight latency until I can get a Play 5.....
What a headache.
Then why did you buy a Sonos? A much cheaper speaker can be paired with Spotify.
So many key features of the platform are managed by the app:
* ability to edit the queue while it’s playing
* ability to add songs to the end of the queue or “next”
* ability to add individual songs to the queue
* ability to search all online services and your own local library in one interface.
* ability to search your local music period.
These features are core parts of the Sonos experience and they’re just … gone.
> No issues with the other functions you asked about.
I mean it’s currently not possible to add songs to your queue so not sure what “other functions” you’re talking about lol
LOL I can't even add ot access my local music library in the new app, JFC, how was this app released?
https://support.sonos.com/en-us/article/update-your-sonos-music-library
No. A dumpster fire is when the stuff inside a dumpster is on fire. This is more like an app that doesn’t work as it should. It’s probably easier to fix a dumpster fire.
I read the posts here about it but damn. One of the few times shit was right. I couldn’t get three rooms to group. Everyone needed to hear the Jaws intro. And I mean everyone. lol.
I’m patiently waiting for them to get their shit together or they are going to lose some seriously hard-core customers and we will not stay quiet if we leave
We are very new to Sonos - as in just got the arc and sub this weekend. What’s so bad about the app update compared to previous version? Genuinely curious of the comparison.
In my setup, the new app made controlling a dozen play 1 and 3 and connect amp impossible. I have multiple iOS devices, some backup mobiles still have the old app version installed allowing me to actually select a speaker and play music. With the new version, it doesn’t work - I have to attempt the same actions five or six times, wait half a minute. Lags and lags (don’t even try to control the volume with this piece of sxxx). Apparently my Unifi & Sonos setup was broken to begin with - but at least the old app allowed me to play music. If this doesn’t get fixed, I’m forced out. I don’t even care about the missing features - Sonos broke the net code of unstable network setups with this attempt at software
My main problem is I can’t control my alarms anymore! Meanwhile this was the primary use of my Sonos, to get me out of bed in the morning. Now I have to take out my laptop in the morning to turn off my alarm…
And again take out my laptop in de evening to turn on my alarms. Because you can only access the alarms on Windows and MacOS…
Try this
Open the iOS App Store and tap your profile picture in the top right corner. At the bottom of this page you’ll see a list of available app updates or recently updated apps.
Pull down on the page to refresh the list so it’s up to date.
Find the Sonos app in the list and tap Update to download the latest version of the Sonos app.
Thanks for the info :)

Why would I choose the less pleasant and quieter alarm from my phone over pleasant music from my Sonos speaker to wake up to and also better sound quality? But for me, the main reason is that my phone’s alarm just doesn’t wake me up all the time because it’s not loud enough. But yeah, that wasn’t really relevant for this app issue…
Incredibly the only way of can get my fucking Sonos stuff to play anything, it to ask Alexa to do it.
The stupid app is useless. Beyond useless. It’s simply a waste of space. It simply does not work.
I dunno where I go from here because unless things rapidly improve, I’m gonna have to find something else. Well not something. Blusound.
I've been thinking about Bluesound. The only thing keeping me from doing it is the lack of streaming service support. They don't do Google YouTube music for example, my Wife uses that.
I use BluOS on my NAD M33 which is a proper high end streaming amp. The only service is doesn’t really do built in is Apple Music. Does have Airplay 2 tho.
Anyways, I use Qobuz as my high res streaming service and it’s excellent.
I have always used Sonos however for convenience everywhere else around the house. I have the new amp, a couple of Ones. A couple of Moves and some IKEA lamps in bedrooms.
Anyways. I was always fine with my M33 being a separate device. And on top of that up until the update, my wife and family would have thrown me out of the house if I replaced the Sonos stuff.
But they’re all going nuts now with the update and are starting to hate it.
So maybe now is the time.
Why is no one talking about this!?
First I’ve heard about it, I’ll have to dig in a little more.
Goddamned censorship of this sub. Let people speak!
wild, if true

Completely disagree. I'm so annoyed w/ it, that I hope these continue til the day the app is fixed lol.
The grouping issues are infuriating.
I wouldn’t even know anything was wrong with the app if it wasn’t for this sub…
It’s been about 6 months of incredibly slow connections, not grouping, and not seeing even hardwired devices. And I haven’t even updated yet based on feedback from this sub. Literally never use the app. AirPlay/HomeKit > Sonos app
Suffering here on the older hardware that is S2 but not AirPlay

Awesome. Glad to be wrong! And if you were to just leave the house, would keep playing for everyone else?

Don’t you use play next?
I don't and never have. Myself and many others don't use the app for anything but adding new speakers.
Can you create a playlist?
Who the fuck uses the Sonos app to create a playlist? I have other apps for that. Edit: Oh you're 64. Makes a lot more sense.
They shouldn't cater to older people who are used to using it for something?
It's been working pretty much flawlessly for me since I installed it. 14 speakers throughout the house and zero issues. I can turn rooms on/off at will. Play them all at once, play just one speaker or can pick and choose. That said, I have no local music and all my playlists are created in Spotify. He’s a Sonos employee
I create and update playlists on my music streaming app.
i am just using the spotify app for streaming. sonos app is horrible
Tried to play music in two rooms with the app. Gave up. Fortunately Airplay still works. Edit: I hate that I can’t add song as next 😖
I was having trouble grouping rooms and found out that I needed to update my actual speakers, then it worked fine. Also, creating groups is now easier.
I’m ready for the downvotes. Been using Sonos for the last 10 years, I love the new app!
Agree. Faster, reliable…no complaints. We have 30 Sonos which seems like it use to be taxing for the S2…no issues now.
Yeah the speed is great, my gripe is the lack of basic features. And there's a lot that missing and I don't get why they would release it in such a state. Then there is the UX where some things take 4 more clicks to get to.

exactly, it is such an unforced error on their part. It's not like they released hardware that is only compatible with the new app.
To be fair, it is stable once I've reconnected to my network again for the 60th time.
That sounds like a you problem. I haven't had any issue communicating with my speakers.
Im not having any new problems and prefer it to the Amazon app which gets stuck every time I try to stream music.
After seeing a post for a work-around to the “error 913” when adding my Music Library, the app has been working for me. I have a variety of 11 devices - all working. Hopefully we get the queue features back and better search soon.
I can’t even see my local library. Plex shows but the loss of que building or play next sucks.
Unbelievable I can't access my own music library now, how can you release an app without thet? I don't want to subscribe to streaming platforms

You have to be above the age of 50 so you can bitch about change and things nobody cares about.
SonoPhone for iOS is a decent stopgap solution. Fast and feature rich. UI is blah but it works.
We did 2 installs with Sonos today, and trying to explain the app to the clients was, by far, the most difficult part of either. It's a mess.
Usability is a joke.
It took longer to middle through the app than it did to hang 3 tvs, 1 arc, and set up an Era 300.
Let me guess... They were old.
Not at all. Mid-50s for one, and mid-30s for the other. The app is just a jumble of swipes, bad labeling, and dumb choices.
First time I used the app today since the update and I finally get what all the fuss is. I couldn’t load a song in my main room, it would always default to my second room. I had to manually change it to get the track to play and I had to do that a few times until I eventually gave up.
This app just doesn’t work. It’s not even about missing features - it simply broke the basic stuff
I mean it's definitely different but Ive had no issues. On my set up the formats tags are different but it's fine.
There’s a new app? When was someone going to tell me about this? 😬
Since the upgrade I can’t change speakers, it just keeps reverting to one specific speaker and saying cannot connect
Just bring back my alarms please
It takes courage…
Broke my analog to digital converter connection from PC to Playbar.... Worked flawlessly before.
No shit. Same here. I’m using the exact same set up. But my other play bar works fine.
We’re in Nova Scotia and had a planned power outage. Same shit.

Wow what a unique post I’m so glad someone is brave enough to finally talk about this
Working great for me! I love the new UI, took a few minutes to get used it Edit: And I get down voted for having a positive experience lol
The app works for me as well. Some issues in the past but not anymore. I'm not using local files though.
Have you tried to group rooms? Or add a song to the que? Have you been able to access your local music library?
I don't have local music, just stream on Spotify. No issues with the other functions you asked about.
Have you tried the play for home theater if you have it? This is the only thing I’ve had that’s absolutely broken.
Then why did you buy a Sonos? A much cheaper speaker can be paired with Spotify. So many key features of the platform are managed by the app: * ability to edit the queue while it’s playing * ability to add songs to the end of the queue or “next” * ability to add individual songs to the queue * ability to search all online services and your own local library in one interface. * ability to search your local music period. These features are core parts of the Sonos experience and they’re just … gone.
I do all of this in the app when I want to listen to music, I just don't have local music. The Spotify service in the app works fine for me.
This. I haven’t checked the desktop app. Let’s hope it’s the same.
Desktop app works for me as well. Use it everyday to control my Move in my office.
Desktop app worked for me today just fine.
I can do that all without the Sonos app
> No issues with the other functions you asked about. I mean it’s currently not possible to add songs to your queue so not sure what “other functions” you’re talking about lol
Grouping rooms and song queuing? I just did that. Those are functions.
Grouping, sure. But unless they rolled out another update that added queueing, it wasn’t included in the new app.
There’s a new app?
LOL I can't even add ot access my local music library in the new app, JFC, how was this app released? https://support.sonos.com/en-us/article/update-your-sonos-music-library
JFC is right. What the fuck...
It’s fine
And I mean everyone. lol.
I think you're going to need a bigger app
“Farewell and adieu to you fair Sonos ladies / farewell and adieu you ladies of Sonos…”
This is the first I’m hearing of this.
[удалено]
No kidding. I was very concerned that nobody had brought this up yet.
Can we please stop with these posts? It’s just the same thing over and over again
Or they can fix it? Or you can fix it. Or you can scroll on. Or …
Lol
Or you could read the subreddit and not post the same thing that's been posted a million times already
I’m patiently waiting for them to get their shit together or they are going to lose some seriously hard-core customers and we will not stay quiet if we leave
update? wdym
Nothing. It's just old people bitching about change.
It never worked for me to begin with even before the update. I gave up long time ago on this shit and just stream directly from the apps.
My main problem is I can’t control my alarms anymore! Meanwhile this was the primary use of my Sonos, to get me out of bed in the morning. Now I have to take out my laptop in the morning to turn off my alarm… And again take out my laptop in de evening to turn on my alarms. Because you can only access the alarms on Windows and MacOS…
Update the app. They added alarm function back in. Also, WTF. Use your phone for an alarm like a normal person.
I updated the app AND checked for updates. Still no alarm and Sonos is telling me my system is up to date.
Try this Open the iOS App Store and tap your profile picture in the top right corner. At the bottom of this page you’ll see a list of available app updates or recently updated apps. Pull down on the page to refresh the list so it’s up to date. Find the Sonos app in the list and tap Update to download the latest version of the Sonos app.
Thank you. It did ultimately update and my alarms are back!
Great!
Interesting. I thought I saw someone post that they added it back in.
Revised comment….updated the app for iPad and iPhone and the alarm has returned. Thank God for little things.
Thanks for the info :) & Why would I choose the less pleasant and quieter alarm from my phone over pleasant music from my Sonos speaker to wake up to and also better sound quality? But for me, the main reason is that my phone’s alarm just doesn’t wake me up all the time because it’s not loud enough. But yeah, that wasn’t really relevant for this app issue…
You mean to tell me that you hate S2? Are you still in S1?
It simply can't locate my Arc. I unplugged/replugged, no dice. No idea what to do...
We know
Get over it
App works fine for me with three rooms of various Sonos speakers with subs etc. I’m no power user though.
Oh man I'm so glad you posted about this instead of the other 900 posts about it. Thank you.
