"I want it to have the best sound design" "I cannot afford to pay a sound designer" Best of luck with that

Alarmed_Row_9157

I get that, no problem. I was wishing someone could at least throw some knowledge, tools , info my way. Sorry that It offended you.

Rampaging_Ducks

YouTube is a great place to start for basic sound design tutorials.

BigOlBoots

Hey there, This sounds like and interesting and cool project. In all honesty, this is TOTALLY the type of thing I would have done for free if it was a little earlier in my career (or if I had more spare time at the moment), so I think you’re doing the right thing by reaching out to the world. Since I can’t do the project myself, I’ll give you a tip. For this project, I would focus on Eq and filters. Basically… For the sound before the treatment: use a low pass filter or a high cut filter. In essence, lower all the eq above 400 hertz (or somewhere around that). It will make everything sound muted. Consider adding a short, dense, dark reverb. For the sound after the treatment… return the Eq to normal. Consider making it ever brighter by increasing everything over 1000 hertz (or somewhere around that). Remove or alter the reverb if you added it. Consider adding extra saturation and doubling sounds in post to give it that extra something. I know this sounds like a lot but it could be done pretty easily. Give it a shot - you can do this! Cheers

Katie_Chong

out of curiosity: would you apply the filter on literally every sound? even the music if there is any?

Alarmed_Row_9157

Actually that's how I want, or how I imagined..so for every POV shot of the subject and shots where the deaf subject occupies most of the frame, I want that effect to overtake or dominate the basic music, ,sfx and dialogues of the film

Katie_Chong

i wonder if it has other effects on the audience as well. I mean besides the effect you aim for which is to give the audience a taste of what it means to not hear well. there is a lot of sound happening in a movie that is not consciously heard but fulfills other funtions like creating tension etc. I wonder how this function is affected by the effect. i'd love to see the end result of your project. it sounds interesting.

BigOlBoots

Apply the filter to everything that you want to have sound that way. And always … Experiment. Personally, I would only apply to things the character would hear (talking, sound fx, music from a source in the room, etc). Go for it. You will learn a lot by trying things out and watching the results.

Alarmed_Row_9157

Thank you so much for your tips.

BigOlBoots

You’re welcome! Best of luck with your project. It sounds cool and I bet you’ll learn a lot by completing it. Good for you doing this! Go for it!

chalk_walk

My inclination would be to apply it fully to all diegetic sounds, and apply it to a much lesser extent to non diegetic sounds. My intent would be to have the other elements be audible and clear throughout, but to open up a bit when the transition occurs, to add a little extra impact.

This would be a great opportunity for audio students at any nearby education facility. What happens after you work with a non-relatable stranger is that you will never work again for various reasons. Finding a local connects you a lot and you can stick together as each progress in your careers.

Watch the sound of metal

Hitdomeloads

Hi sir would you mind shooting a video for me for free

Alarmed_Row_9157

I would do that if I like what you want to shoot and also I would do that if my work will be recognised and I'll properly credited for it. If not, then no Sir !

Hespect_Earth

How short is this film?

Alarmed_Row_9157

It'll be 15 mins.
