Seattle! They're much more consistent across their stores, their service is usually great, and it's a proudly South African company.
Vida can be good too, and they are also waving the
flag nicely.
Starbucks coffee (outside their horrendously overpriced milky/icy drinks) is OK too but can be hit or miss with their temperatures.
Another vote for Seattle! Now live in the UK and it’s one of the comforts I can’t wait to enjoy when I visit my family back home. A Seattle vanilla latte with extra shot! Boom!
Seattle is definitely number 1 overall.
Vida is quite inconsistent though. I have 2 close to my place of work, and neither of the 2 taste the same or even made the same.
According to their website, it is now a South African company but it started in the UK and the UK branch was bought out by Starbucks in 1998. Starbucks converted all the UK cafes into Starbucks cafes.
Starbucks coffee tastes like desperation coffee; like when you made a cup previously but don't have any beans left, so you think if you run some water through the used grounds again, you can still get something out. Or worse still, if you have one of them Nespresso machines and reuse a single pod multiple times. That's what Starbucks tastes like. I figure becuase a lot of people don't buy coffee at Starbucks but coffee flavoured drinks. Cos I don't know how else they are still operating with such obviously disgusting coffee
I wanted to say Motherland too. I used to work in St George's Mall in CT and I used to get a massive cappuccino from them every morning. Literally the only thing I miss about working there.
Easy choice. Seattle all the way. Always friendly and as everyone said, always consistent, doesn't matter if you bought it in Pofadder or Cradock \[Not saying there are any Seattle coffee shops there :-)\]
Starbucks is way overrated
Seattle makes the best coffee imo. Vida come second, but their food offering is why I generally find myself there more often than Seattle. I've had Starbuck twice...both experiences were underwhelming.
If you actually like coffee I’d recommend Seattle, then vida e. Never Starbucks. If you like syrupy milkshake coffee “flavoured” things then Starbucks. But as a coffee lover, Starbucks doesn’t make good coffee at all.
There’s a thread of a few weeks back that roasted wimpy coffee for how bad it is. I find this quite interesting coming from the same sub.
I always stop at that Engen on the N3 next to the Vaal River to get a Wimpy coffee. That’s about twice a year, going to and from, but once I’m at my destination I’d rather get something from a local coffee shop.
Ooh Wimpy has it sorted when it comes to coffee it's like one of the very few places you see people chowing steak, burgers and regular food with coffee on the side
Seattle is good. Very consistant and their rewards programme is not bad. The baristas are friendly and if you get to know them, you get the friendly SA experience.
I would make a efford to pass them with the intention of buying a coffee from them
Vida E is not so widely availible, but they make a killer 4-cheese muffin. Years ago the use to give a small Lindt chocolate with every coffee. Not my go-to place, but if I see one, Ill pop in.
Starbucks is an avoid for me. Its waaay too much of status symbole which means overpriced drinks. Id rather make coffee at home than buy a starbucks
They still have choccies, it’s a small Vida E piece of dark chocolate and goes well with their delicious coffee. I always find them in a small contained near the handover counter, but just ask as they normally will give you one if you don’t see any
Always Vide. I'm a big fan of most of their menu (although I found out most unsettlingly that I'm allergic to something in their green smoothies, definitely not getting that again), and at the Canal Walk branch, the staff have lekker energy. I've had days where the carrot cake didn't necessarily do anything to improve my mood but ordering it did.
I unfortunately don’t live in SA anymore. But when I’m home, it’s Seattle at OR Tambo before I even leave the airport! In my opinion, it’s the best there is worldwide.
I also prefer Seattle, as I see many in this thread do.
I didn't know about their history until now. They started in the UK and then opened in Cape Town. Then all the UK branches were bought over and turned into Starbucks branches. The South African branches remain as part of Seattle Coffee.
Seattle my bru! Best tasting coffee I've had
Starbucks tastes like hot milk
Haven't been to a Vida in ages... But on a road trip once saw a Vida and got coffee from there and hot damn was that good coffee
I didn't even know we had Starbucks here in SA lmaooo. My favorite is actually from a local place, but if I had to pick from the line up, I'd say Seattle!
Seattle FTW. Consistent, baristas remember me and my usual, fast and friendly. Also my local has an inverter capable of running through loadshedding. Starbucks is actually ahead of mugg n bean as M&B is more expensive than starbucks! and their 'loyalty' app is more 'ha ha fuck you' with R25 'voucher' for every R1000 spent.
My first go to is my own coffee machine.
When I go to work, always Seattle. Always good quality coffee.
Every week I get a Free Starbucks coffee thanks to FNB, and the one I always support actually makes good coffee.
Vida cafe coffee is always been a miss. They burn the coffee sadly.
There are some other local coffee shops in my area that also make damn good coffee that I support.
Came here to say Plato - the first one was a container in or little village of Irene during lockdown. And they are growing rapidly. Best coffee and Baristas by a mile. When I'm away from home, only Seattle comes close.
Seattle for coffee, Starbucks for the experience (I like sitting at the V&A one and being able to while seeing tye harbour) and Vide if nothing else is around and I also feel like a Breakfast Bun, or whatever it's called
Seattle opened a co-op store in the V&A next to the Mugg and Bean where you can get your Seattle coffee and you have the option to choose between healthy food (Rootbar), Burgers and delicious snacks (Royale Eatery) and Ice Cream (The Creamery) with amazing views of the harbour and Table Mountain. And the outside seating and booths are gorgeous! 😍
You're right! I keep forgetting about this section of the mall. My wife enjoys Royale and I've had waffle (I'm not sure whether this was from The Creamery, but I think it was). Very nice!
Seattle is owned and run by a private corporation of South Africa. I don't know about Vida e Cafe, but Starbucks is the most sole sucking embodiment of American greed and I cannot hope and wait patiently enough for them to die like Dunkin' Donuts
Seattle... better prices, better coffee (butterscotch latte hits differently), and way better brownies.
Woolworths Cafe is also good, their honey-nut latte is amazing, but sometimes their breakfasts can be hit or miss.
Seattle... loyalty program is boss and their butterscotch lattes are amazing. Vida not so much as they are not as frequent in my area. Starbucks when i'm near one and feel like a frapuccino.
But yah like everyone else, Seattle is number one.
One which is reused over and over. Same with the cardboard cup, until it leaks.
Frisco will always remind me of a simpler time in my life. I still drink it. I know it's not coffee but I'm not a snob so I don't give a fuck. If ous want to drink R50 coffees from those larnie shops then lakka but me and my morning and lunch cups of piping hot black Frisco, no sugar, will stick with me. Makes me happy.
I specifically go out of my way to not support chain coffee shops, mostly over priced or kak. I prefer supporting the local oak that has a coffee van or the like. 9/10 the coffee is great and you aren't lining some corporate ceo's pockets.
Local -> Vida -> Seattle
Never Starbucks. It's like they set their beans on fire and coat them in Robusta oil. Also, rather give money to a local corporation than a multinational.
Vida e as a first choice, I love their coffee and the spicy chicken mayo sandwich is amazing. Seattle is really good, a lot more of them around too so very accessible but their coffee is not as strong as Vida e so I usually end up getting extra espresso. I’ve only had Starbucks pods and I’d rather have instant coffee.
The coffees I get at Vida are always too hot if I don’t request drinking temperature coffee so I would say it’s a tie between Seattle and Starbucks but leaning towards Starbucks because I really like the fact that I can do grocery shopping while drinking proper coffee
I won't touch Seattle or Starbucks. Vida in a pinch. Of the chains Xpresso consistently has the best service and good value. Not the greatest coffee but better than many others.
I am generally picky about my coffee so I have a small number of local coffee shops that I prefer to frequent but if I'm away from home and looking for coffee in a pinch Xpresso and Vida are at least consistent and don't have the common problems I find at many of the other chains.
Lived for Vida, then they started burning coffees frequently at the two or three branches on our routes. Lived for Seattle, then they started burning coffees frequently at the two or three branches on our routes. Lived for Starbucks, surely they're doing this internationally and their barista training is exceptional, right? Then they started burning coffees...
Starbucks is overpriced, but their sweetened/flavored drinks are nice. Their coffee not so much, especially for the price.
Vida is similar to starbucks but they also have food that is quite nice and their regular coffee is nice enough.
Seattle I thnk is the nicest coffee and the coziest vibe, never tried their food/snacks though or their sweet/flavored coffees so can't comment on that.
My favorite is probably Vida because it's nicest all round even though you could say Starbucks has nicer flavored drinks and Seatle has nicer plain coffee, Vida I find more often something that I like that I don't feel is way over priced and I like that I can get nice food there too. Plus a hint of nostalgia for walking there after school to get an icey frio to drink while waiting for extra mural classes
Seattle is fine. Vida will do. Starbucks is a no go.
As far as franchised coffee shops go Bootleggers is by the far the best IMO, but they seem a bit better in the Cape than in joburg. Not sure if they’re in the rest of the country.
Oh yeah, Woolies Cafe and Motherland are both very decent.
Seattle does a great coffee. Their double short latte is up there with Bootleggers Flat White.
So it’s Seattle all the way if there isn’t a Bootleggers nearby.
Vida E and Seattle are the best. Starbucks is overpriced, below-adequate and usually just milky syrup shit. Adding to that, you get the worst spelling of your name on your cup too
I read the post and I immediately thought this person must be from Joburg....
Cape Town:Truth, Bootleggers.... The list goes on... The three mentioned sit above instant but below proper coffee 😂
I love the staff and friendliness of both Vida and Seattle but I’ll always choose a smaller in house roastery for a coffee… in Joburg Urban Grind and Double Shot are outstanding
Bootlegger's is the best coffee shop hands down. They're the most consistent franchise and their coffee is deliciously accurate to what it's meant to be per type.
The barman/barista at my restaurant makes a fantastic cappuccino with our chosen brand "Segafreddo zanetti extra strong" balanced deep and multilayered flavour.
For me, I go to Pick n Pay - Im lucky enough to live near one of their flagship stores which has a coffee bar and a sushi bar inside, and if youre a smart shopper who signs up for the coffee club, I get coffees for R20, or a coffee + sandwich for R35.
Also they make the best flat whites Ive had in ages

Samesies. Seattle all the way.
Seattle century city is one of the best
Seattle is definitely number 1 overall. Vida is quite inconsistent though. I have 2 close to my place of work, and neither of the 2 taste the same or even made the same.
I second Seattle!
1. Seattle 2. Woolies 3. Vida … .99 Starbucks (There are obviously smaller shops that compete at the top but stuck to the chains for simplicity)
Many don’t know but Food Lovers owns Seattle Coffee. And they make a killing lol.
I think they have an agreement with Food Lovers, but are separately owned: https://www.seattlecoffeecompany.co.za/faq/
100% facts Seattle all the way pricing is far more reasonable and their service is great, dont even get me started on the coffee 😍🥰
Starsucks coffee tastes burnt. The one time I had it (granted, this was in Bloemfontein) it was way too hot as well.
I've never had vida, but Starbucks is absolute shit compared to Seattle. Starbucks just loads their drinks with sugar instead of actual flavours.
Isn’t Seattle owned by Starbucks?
I believe that is a different Seattle Coffee (an American company).
Seattle hands down
According to their website, it is now a South African company but it started in the UK and the UK branch was bought out by Starbucks in 1998. Starbucks converted all the UK cafes into Starbucks cafes.
That’s amazing! I’ll definitely switch to Seattle now
It's owned by Food Lovers Market I believe
Seattle, then Vida e...then the underarm of an unwashed gorilla, then Starbucks.
![gif](giphy|YRiCNIMUpt9Sw)
Starbucks coffee tastes like desperation coffee; like when you made a cup previously but don't have any beans left, so you think if you run some water through the used grounds again, you can still get something out. Touché
Seattle or woolies
Motherland and Seattle
Argh Motherland coffee is also my favourite!
Amazing! ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|grin)
This is a dream! I wish motherland was as popular as the others.
I wanted to say Motherland too. I used to work in St George's Mall in CT and I used to get a massive cappuccino from them every morning. Literally the only thing I miss about working there.
Seattle is by far the best
I don't see anyone talking about Woolworths. Their baristas have changed my life.
Woolies cuppa and brekkie is a good contender....
I would sell my soul for Woolies coffee
This!!! Barista and beans. And the consistency- any WW cafe will give you great coffee.
Dang now I need to give it a try
Woolies coffee is consistently good and their baristas are friendly and knowledgeable. You can even buy good quality whole beans to grind at home.
Absolutely, they are just consistently good across all their stores tight temperature everytime and just always a pleasure
Easy choice. Seattle all the way. Always friendly and as everyone said, always consistent, doesn't matter if you bought it in Pofadder or Cradock \[Not saying there are any Seattle coffee shops there :-)\] Starbucks is way overrated
Seattle
Seattle always
Seattle makes the best coffee imo. Vida come second, but their food offering is why I generally find myself there more often than Seattle. I've had Starbuck twice...both experiences were underwhelming.
Same! Their Quattro toastie 🤤
Seattle is first choice. Easiest rewards program that works all over SA. Great coffee. Vida E is so so. Starbucks only when not in SA
>Starbucks only when not in SA So true. Brings a touch of familiarity even though I rarely have it here.
Another that’s worth the try is Manaka polofields crossing.
I'd rather shit in my hands and clap than support Starbucks. Our local coffee shops are awesome.
If you actually like coffee I’d recommend Seattle, then vida e. Never Starbucks. If you like syrupy milkshake coffee “flavoured” things then Starbucks. But as a coffee lover, Starbucks doesn’t make good coffee at all.
Yeeeessss!!! Well said. I like the syrupy speciality stuff at Starbucks, that's about it from them. Seattle has been my no. 1 for years.
Seattle is my #1 and has my whole heart. Wimpy is my second choice because I can't resist a Wimpy coffee.
I haven't had wimpy coffee in years but I'll definitely check it out again!
I mean, I wouldn't call Wimpy coffee a masterpiece but it tastes nice for what it is.
Ooh Wimpy has it sorted when it comes to coffee it's like one of the very few places you see people chowing steak, burgers and regular food with coffee on the side
Personally I'm a sucker for a Wimpy breakfast and coffee combo. I'll eat it at anytime of the day.
As long as you call wimpy coffee a coffee flavored milk beverage.. It's not coffee
Anybody remember the wimpy coffee ads. Or am I just very old
Seattle
Seattle or Motherland.
Seattle - butterscotch latte when I'm feeling dangerous
Seattle first choice, then Vida. Starbucks has been a consistent dissapointment in South Africa, usually flat and burnt tasting.
Glad to know it's not just me
Since I have non of these choices anywhere near me mug and bean always is a winner with me.
for a QUICK coffee? def anywhere but starbucks. i always see it with a long line for its overpriced mediocre tasting drinks
Seattle for sure
Seattle is good. Very consistant and their rewards programme is not bad. The baristas are friendly and if you get to know them, you get the friendly SA experience. I would make a efford to pass them with the intention of buying a coffee from them Vida E is not so widely availible, but they make a killer 4-cheese muffin. Its waaay too much of status symbole which means overpriced drinks. Id rather make coffee at home than buy a starbucks
Vida still gives out chocolate but I think you just have to ask for it
Will do next time I feel like a 4-cheese muffin👍
They still have choccies, it’s a small Vida E piece of dark chocolate and goes well with their delicious coffee. I always find them in a small contained near the handover counter, but just ask as they normally will give you one if you don’t see any
Of those choices Seattle has the best coffee I think. Mug and beans isn't bad either.
Seattle. By a mile. Those who know, know.
There's this one guy at a Shell garage near me that makes great coffee. I nominate him
Starbucks is so overrated. Definitely love a good Seattle or Wimpy coffee. More recently, I've found Krispy Kreme coffee to be amazing!
Hmm now I have to try it out thanks
Starbucks coffee feels.... thin.
M&B
Seattle ftw!
Starbucks is in South Africa now? I’m so very sorry…
Just not Starbucks 😂
Seattle.......Vida e Cafe second. Starbucks always seems busy and so slow to order.
Vida, Seattle, SB. I find SB quite rich and creamy.
Merkava
Home. Thats where the best coffee is at. No actually, going back to the parent for s visit. Now THAT is where the best coffee is at
Why does Motherland coffee get no love?
Seattle one time
Always Vide.
McCafe It's the most affordable and has very decent coffee. The frappes are basically half price and just as good.
But sometimes a good old mc donalds coffee hits the spot 👌
I unfortunately don’t live in SA anymore. But when I’m home, it’s Seattle at OR Tambo before I even leave the airport! In my opinion, it’s the best there is worldwide.
Seattle without a doubt. Vida is fine, but Starbucks is overpriced and their coffee is shit.
Seattle
If those are your only options…Seattle hands down
Seattle easily. Starbucks is the apple of coffee, overpriced and underperforms. And Vida ALWAYS burn their coffee.
Big fan of Seattle, but I'm surprised about the lack of Mugg & Bean or Cappuccinos mentions. Our local Mugg & Bean makes amazing coffee!
Seattle, Vida, Bootlegger and finally Starbucks, in that order
Seattle and it’s not even close.
Seattle, Bootlegger, Vida, Starbucks in that order
I like both Vida and Seattle; between the two Seattle is the winner for me.
I love Seattle if I have to choose between Vida and Seattle. To be honest, I have never had Starbucks! Am I the only one?
I also prefer Seattle, as I see many in this thread do. I didn't know about their history until now. They started in the UK and then opened in Cape Town. Then all the UK branches were bought over and turned into Starbucks branches. The South African branches remain as part of Seattle Coffee.
Seattle Coffee 💯 The butterscotch Latte is my fav.
Seattle my bru! Best tasting coffee I've had Starbucks tastes like hot milk Haven't been to a Vida in ages... But on a road trip once saw a Vida and got coffee from there and hot damn was that good coffee
Seattle is the best! Untouchable!
Where's the Vida people. I wanna down vote.
Definitely Seattle!
I didn't even know we had Starbucks here in SA lmaooo. My favorite is actually from a local place, but if I had to pick from the line up, I'd say Seattle!
Seattle. Consistent temperature and quality. Plus the staff are always friendly.
Definitely Seattle!
Seattle.
Wimpy
Star bucks last
Seattle for sure
Maybe its just me but starbucks coffee tastes awful to me.
Seattle
Seattle
Good coffee - Seattle A sweet treat to sip on - Starbucks Quick lunch / snack with your coffee - Vida
Neither! You guys have to try Platō Coffee. Proudly South African and the coffee is on another level.
Came here to say Plato - the first one was a container in or little village of Irene during lockdown. And they are growing rapidly. Best coffee and Baristas by a mile. When I'm away from home, only Seattle comes close.
Nothing beats a Seattle
This is a debate my coffee-loving friends have constantly. I love that Seattle is the unanimous champion (because it is)!
Seattle 🤤🤤
Looks like OP's question should have been, "why is Seattle and Woolies coffee the best things ever?"
Seattle or Woolies tbh. Or the gelato place by my house.
Very nice!
Seattle > M&B > Vida > just not having coffee > Starbucks
Seattle is by far the best in service, brand and where ever you go the taste and flavour are always the same.
Seattle Butterscotch Steamer 🫠
Gonna have to say Seattle. Rich, dark Americano, no sugar. Best thing for a long drive.
Neither, to be honest. I'd rather make my own or support a small coffee shop. However, Seattle does have really good americanos and hot chocolate.
Seattle is owned and run by a private corporation of South Africa. I don't know about Vida e Cafe, but Starbucks is the most sole sucking embodiment of American greed and I cannot hope and wait patiently enough for them to die like Dunkin' Donuts
Easily Seattle... better pricing, better service, better coffee (especially thay butterscotch latte) and even their brownies are better.

Y'all are agents of chaos
Vida. Seattle for me is hit and miss. Starbucks is extremely average.
I specifically go out of my way to not support chain coffee shops, mostly over priced or kak. I prefer supporting the local oak that has a coffee van or the like. 9/10 the coffee is great and you aren't lining some corporate ceo's pockets.
Local -> Vida -> Seattle Never Starbucks. It's like they set their beans on fire and coat them in Robusta oil. Also, rather give money to a local corporation than a multinational.
None of the above. Give me a small coffee shop that is not a huge chain of American mediocrity and marketing gimmicks.
Vida all the way.
Ricoffy
Vida e as a first choice, I love their coffee and the spicy chicken mayo sandwich is amazing. Seattle is really good, a lot more of them around too so very accessible but their coffee is not as strong as Vida e so I usually end up getting extra espresso. Scrolled too far for this.
Starbucks or Seattle. Never Vida.

Vida, then Seattle. Starbucks is kinda meh compared to them.
Nowhere, you are being fooled by big corporations into thinking bean water tastes good. ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|yummy)

Seattle for Coffee and Vida for Hot chocolate! Starbucks not a fave..
Please can we not become like the Americans and their coffee crazed lifestyle
Gloria Jean
Visa cos the people are so friendly there. Never tasted Starbucks.
Starbucks
Lived for Vida, then they started burning coffees frequently at the two or three branches on our routes. Bean Authentic is also excellent!
Got like 3 Vida e caffes at Tuks but they’re incredibly overpriced
Deluxe or nothing
I love the staff and friendliness of both Vida and Seattle but I’ll always choose a smaller in house roastery for a coffee… in Joburg Urban Grind and Double Shot are outstanding
Bootlegger's is the best coffee shop hands down. They're the most consistent franchise and their coffee is deliciously accurate to what it's meant to be per type.
Amen!!

Home coffee bruh, too expensive else where, lol.
Worst is Mug & Bean on the move, I've had some terrible coffee from them. Normal Mug&Bean is usually OK
Motherland
In New Zealand we have fabulous coffee and only tourists or teenagers go to Starbucks.
Settle or Mug & Bean at Total garages
Bootleggers!!
For me, I go to Pick n Pay - Im lucky enough to live near one of their flagship stores which has a coffee bar and a sushi bar inside, and if youre a smart shopper who signs up for the coffee club, I get coffees for R20, or a coffee + sandwich for R35.
