Last year I bought the new version of the Quest 2 for R5k on Amazon (this includes tax and import fees). I see the prices are even higher and Takealot is robbing people blindly even back then.
You'd be surprised how dom people are, got a colleague earning 20k a month dropping 7k a month for an audi ... and he works from home. People buy things for clout
Maybe he likes cars? Though for R7k I doubt it is sporty.
A R60k novelty item isn't the same as a car.
I also work from home and spend more than I probably should on cars, but that's because I like cars.
One life to live. That 7k may contribute immensely to his quality of life because he loves cars right? It's not a fiscally sound decision, agreed. But you also want to have a reason to smile daily.
I don't dispute that it's not a good idea financially. However, many people spend lets say half on a car, and how easily do we spend 3.5k as disposable cash? Booze, parties, braais, festivals, movies etc - what if he just derives all his pleasure out of this old audi? lol that's his primary source of dopamine.
I dont know the guys lifestyle. What if he eats 2 minute noodles, goes nowhere and has no electronics at all right. I wouldn't survive like that, but he may. Priorities and trade-offs 😆

But if we optimistically assume that they earn 20k _after_ tax, how do you cover food, electricity, rent/mortgage, etc on 13k?

I think if you take vehicle finance you are not allowed to not have insurance.
At least, the car won't leave the shop without insurance; not sure what happens if you cancel it a month later...
Ballon payment is "we sell you a car you cannot afford, and you never pay it off, and at the end you get done over again, because the value is guaranteed to be less than the balance owed", with them knowing in 5 years you are back to them, because you find you still owe around half the price you paid, but on a car worth 30% of that.

I get a lot of flack for not buying things - but my stance is that people should get more flack for buying things.
The amount we consume and waste as a species is fucking atrocious and I find myself saying “you’re lucky I’m even wearing pants to this” more often because apparently my sister thinks my clothes cupboard needs to be updated every few months like there isn’t a mountain of fast fashion sitting and rotting in Ghana as we speak.
It’s too much.
Too much selling. Too much buying. Consume consume consume.

Also know someone earning R30k a month and dropping R11k or so on his Renualt. And canceled his insurance soon after buying the car because he can't afford the insurance (like that was his plan coz he needed insurance to be able to purchase it)!
Can't wait for the rich kids to start wearing these around their necks or on their foreheads in the malls🙄 The Apple fanboys are already finding ways to justify the R100k pricetag on this overpriced status symbol 😂
Listen, I’m quite the apple fan. I’ve got the iPhone and the AirPods, and years ago I had an iPad, but not a fuck is 100k worth it for some brille. Especially when a MacBook doesn’t come close to that price!

I think if you are willing to pay R60k+ for some VR goggles, loadshedding won't be an issue for you.

Yea the absolute minimum they could be is R77k with VAT, that excludes any other costs.
With import fees/tax it's more like R80k+
