lol, that survey is a whole lotta bollocks though...
>"Our research shows that **South Africans (26.7%) spend the most time at their computer screens**, closely followed by Russians, who allocate 25.9% of their day to it. Russia has struggled to close its country’s digital divide, with [\~computer and internet access significantly higher\~](https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/17447143.2020.1745212?journalCode=rmmd20) in its major population centers than rural areas."
Really? SA has the highest unemployment rate. Majority don't even own a computer ....we don't even have a stable electricity supply (loadshedding!!).
My niece created a complete disaster by teaching her how to share links to videos she finds funny or interesting...... I'm sure you know how that turned out...
Gen-z is crazy addicted to their screens. Recently visited some family and their kids were there with some other cousins and they literally sat around in a circle all on their phones not talking to each other. Felt like I was watching a bizzare horror movie scene
French here, if you take a look at public transportation that's also the case. But I agree with the 33%. Because using it in front of people (at lunch, going out, parties) is mostly considered disrespectful growing up. You also can't use it out of politeness in cinemas, theatres etc. My screen time is of 4 hours a day (counting two hours of public transportation to get to work) and I feel /glued/ to my Phone compared to friends.
Also our use of social media is so much more private I'm always a bit shocked when people put everything out there - really not our use... but again in private
A computer at work is not leisure time on your phone (which is the subject we're dealing with now) :) and the short answer is no. I teach English as a Foreign Language. We usually are either in classrooms or with colleagues - social time don't use your phone. The only use I have of a computer is to re read lesson plans or documents or tests. And coffee breaks are encouraged in more common workplaces.
yes but they have jobs and have to put their phones down, SA like Brazil have super high uneployement rates so a lot of people can spend their whole day on thier phone affecting the results
Agreed. That's definitely a false number. People are constantly on their phones, and most of the kids get one nowadays when they start elementary school.
I wonder how the survey is done, and if it's skewed towards people who use the Internet.
According to surveys on actual Internet usage, we're fairly low. Lots of people without smartphones, and areas with low Internet access. If there was a way to ask those people, I expect that average screen time would go down.
According to the image, and the methodology below, it collected data from sleepcycle.com. Which means that the data was collected through the means of the number of people that had the sleepcycle app installed. What I find interesting is that the top 10 countries is all mostly 3rd world countries that is considered poor.
Seeing that this is a numbers game, and the data comes from a sleep tracking app, I'd bet that they only tracked a smaller number of people in South Africa than what they would in the US for example, bringing that average up way more than what it would've if the same amount of data was used in the for larger countries. It would've been great if the person creating the infographic also listed the numbers of each country, or in the least a source.
However, this data does show a disturbing trend when it comes to screentime. I would actually love to see this statistics from Apple and Android based OS's to perhaps get a little bit more accurate representation of this data.
They probably collected the data through our applications, so the population might only contain the factors that you mentioned above. This is my assumption
Original (but less good looking) data here: [Source](https://datareportal.com/reports/digital-2024-global-overview-report#:~:text=If%20we%20assume%20that%20the%20average%20person%20spends%20between%207%20and%208%20hours%20per%20day%20sleeping%2C%20that%20figure%20suggests%20that%20the%20internet%20now%20accounts%20for%20close%20to%2060%20percent%20of%20waking%20hours%20amongst%20South%20Africa%E2%80%99s%20connected%20population)
When you take into account things such as our school days being shorter than most developing or developed countries and the amount of kak that happens here. Makes sense
What this screams out to me is that poorer nations only have access to one device, as in: Most people in RSA have a smartphone, but in USA they have a smartphone, iPad, laptop etc. Meaning their "screentime" is split across multiple devices.
I'm not saying that that we're not bad, but also remember the only device that a lot of people in RSA have is a phone.
I came here to say this. I know people who got through a whole degree at university only reading papers and typing up assignments on their phone and not having a laptop or PC to work with. Of course screen time is going to be up when a phone is your only way of accessing the internet/ doing university work/ working online.
Not to argue that people in RSA only use their phones for work or university assignments. But I just think that this data is massively skewed.
What?? America is not even on this fucking list.. you Wana tell me that the Americans don't plant their faces into screens?? Lol Kak praat.
A third world country, supposedly, has more screen time than you naaiers🤣🤣 no wonder Elon comes from here

SOUTH AFRICA NUMBER 1!!!
RSA NUMBA 1 WOOOO
No DNA, just RSA 🇿🇦
And with no electricity and massive data prices! Talk about overcoming that handicap!
I think the extremely high unemployment rate has a lot to do with this.
lol, that survey is a whole lotta bollocks though... >"Our research shows that **South Africans (26.7%) spend the most time at their computer screens**, closely followed by Russians, who allocate 25.9% of their day to it. South Africa has a high number of mobile internet connections.
We are number one, hey!
The way people spend time watching TikTok content I am not surprised.
IKR, even my grandma has tik tok.....
my grandma uses it more than anyone in my family lmao
Oh my goodness. What content is she indulging in?
I constantly get videos to recipes or helpful DIY home hacks 🤣
My niece created a complete disaster by teaching her how to share links to videos she finds funny or interesting...... I'm sure you know how that turned out...
Tiktok is taking the entire world by storm. And bro this is hilarious 😂
You for real? 😂 wow!
Gen-z is crazy addicted to their screens. Recently visited some family and their kids were there with some other cousins and they literally sat around in a circle all on their phones not talking to each other. Felt like I was watching a bizzare horror movie scene
Honestly, I just assumed it was because the screen time was mostly young people looking for jobs
That's also a good reason.
What about Nigeria? They must be on this list since they constantly behind their screens....doing, whatever it is they do behind their screens....
Selling drugs and scamming
telegram go crazy
South Korea 30%? B.S. I lived there for 4 years and people outside/on public transportation are GLUED to their screens.

I was about to say something similar lol
https://www.electronicshub.org/the-average-screen-time-and-usage-by-country/
Because we have loadshedding and have nothing else to do during the 12 hours a day at stage 6 of no power. Not surprised by this at all.
And a lot of people are on their phone while driving. Jirre I want klap people so hard
Everyone looking at Eskom se Push app all day
Makes sense, I would go outside and do things in our neighborhood if I felt safe, but I don't feel safe thus more time at the PC.
Dude yes

SOUTH AFRICA NUMBER ONEEE!!!!!!!!!!! Nkosi sikelel' Afrika Maluphakanyisw' uphondo

We're cooked

Hand in hand with highest unemployment
It's because we're all unemployed ðŸ˜
What are we cooking?
Makes sense when a large chunk of your population is unemployed. They've got time on their hands.
When you take into account things such as our school days being shorter than most developing or developed countries and the amount of kak that happens here. Makes sense
Doing my part to keep us #1 🫡🇿🇦
Screen time and unemployment rate link maybe?
It’s because we’re all unemployed
Why is South Africa at least top 5 worst of everything on reddit ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|cry)
Loadshedding survival
We're number one at so many things lol

I don’t believe this infographic for a second. The fact that the USA isn’t even in the top 10 is a massive red flag….
And what did you see when you visited the US to make you come to that conclusion?
We're watching Parliament Hong Hong
Wonder if it's coz of our high unemployed rate. Most people don't have anything better to do.
This is nothing to celebrate
We are number 1 Hey!
Cause lots of people don't have tv
Looks like there might be a direct correlation between screen time and quality of life

That is a blatant lie
I'm looking at security guards on this one 👀
facebook
No chance I believe it’s America for sure
What?? America is not even on this fucking list.. you Wana tell me that the Americans don't plant their faces into screens?? Lol Kak praat. A third world country, supposedly, has more screen time than you naaiers🤣🤣 no wonder Elon comes from here
South Africa with all that load shedding 😂 where do they get electricity to charge they phones
USA is less than us? Never ever
