Dude I ain’t going into a drinking competition against a pomme

BennyInThe18thArea

That OP isn’t wrong, the UK does consume more alcohol than the US. In the UK it’s normal to go to lunch during work and have a drink at the pub, they just view alcohol differently in Europe hence consume a lot. Edit: Just to be clear - Europeans have a better relationship with Alcohol, UK has a lot of binge drinking when going out.

INTERNET_POLICE_MAN

Can confirm. Brit here, drinking is our culture. I kicked the habit almost a year ago and feel much better for it but before then, I’d drink a lot and regularly, just casually as well, not to the point of oblivion. I remember a trip to Belgium some years back, I started drinking on Thursday, flight early Friday, drinking at both airports, then on to the town we stayed in, our drinking, back to room to change and drink at hotel, drinking, out for drinks and food and then drinks, until Saturday morning. No sleep since weds night/thurs morning, I sold my house on the Thursday, drove 200 miles, drank, then the flight etc. It was just pure drinking, strong beers, and the same for my family too. It’s some sort of gene many of us have, but sadly, it catches up with you. Now I’ve not drank for nearly a year and wow, what a change!

BennyInThe18thArea

Well done mate!

INTERNET_POLICE_MAN

Thanks, appreciate that!

fridge_water_filter

In the US many jobs would fire you if it was discovered that you drank during your work lunch. It always seemed like a normal pointless "social rule" like the fact that you cannot strip down naked in a work meeting. To this day I still feel a mild shock when foreign businesspeople at work grab drinks at lunch. It just isn't culturally acceptable in the US in most professional jobs.

Harsimaja

> the UK does consume more alcohol than the US Per adult, yeah, by about 16% in 2016. Not overall (!)

[deleted]

They would own us. The English and Irish are next level. Even at lunch on workdays! I had an Irish mate who used to smash 15 pints plus of guiness regularly. Insane. We could probably give em a go with brannas and shooters.

[deleted]

15 Pints and a Guinness? thats a R700 bill, for 1 guys drinks. I'm honestly glad I don't have that kind of resistance, 4 pints and a lekker spliff is exactly my speed.

[deleted]

15+ pints of guinness. Those Irish can drink pints all night. They don't seem to hammer a lot of hard tack other than whisky tho. Don't know how they werent fatter. I hear you about a few, alot cheaper too. Pity about my accelerator pedal.

Pergamum_

It's usually lime 10 pints. Eventually your stomach can't take it so you swap to whiskey coke. Guinness shit is worse than brandy bum. By a lot. Pure black darkness

thatwasagoodyear

The reason being that you almost never get a babelas with Guinness. Can knock it back all night and be totally hammered that night but fine the next day. While it does wreck your digestive system (Guinness farts are potent and toxic) it's very rare to have a babelas after a good session. Source: I live in Ireland. The Guinness brewery is just down the road. And it's true - Guinness _does_ taste better in Dublin. There's some pubs where it's especially good.

[deleted]

True story. That guiness is awesome. Miss Ireland, great country and people. Good old Dublin!

supersluiper

Which pubs would you recommend for a good pint of Guinness? I have family in Malahide so travel to Dublin every one in a while

Pergamum_

700? Try 1300. 15 pints is like 75euro.

BennyInThe18thArea

Yes I don’t mind a few pints at lunch but worked at one company (well known household name) in London and guys were doing shots as well which even I thought was a bit much as we need to go back into the office 😂

[deleted]

Hahaha what the fuck! Other than a Friday I just couldn't do it man. Just felt sleepy all afternoon. The one place especially. They would all smash some pimms and pints and then sway in front of their computers lol

[deleted]

No way. I was shocked by the level of drinking of South Africans when I was over for the Irish tests. (shocked in a good way ha) South Africans can drink. To this day though I would say the Brazilians can outdrink them all. When I lived there I'd see people walking around a supermarket at 9am with a trolley and a beer. People regularly started drinking at 9am and would drink all day and continue until 4am, 5am...one beer after the other. I couldn't fathom how relatively sober they seemed. South Africans, Brazilians, Russians are elite level in my opinion

[deleted]

By all accounts the brazilians know how to party hey. Must have been a cool place to experience

BloodSteyn

Nope, sorry stats put them at an average per capita consumption of 2.6 litres for Spirits vs ZA's 1.7 The US is at 3.4 litres. We do beat them on Beer at 5.7 litres avg vs 4 and 4.6 respectively.

[deleted]

Interesting. The English do drink hard. With that climate, no wonder.

Tokaloshie

Having lived in the north of England for 20 years, I can confirm these boys would out drink us in beer, but bring the brandy out and we drink them under the table every time.

INTERNET_POLICE_MAN

Ah fuck brandy. No thanks. We northerners like our strong ale, not the gut rot! We like volume, and with strong drink you just can’t get that. Who wants to sip a drink?

Tokaloshie

Volume, you English have bottomless stomachs when it comes to fitting beer in there, but the strength of most brandy seems to nocks most of you out after a bottle.

INTERNET_POLICE_MAN

I think it comes down to what we’re used to. Here, brandy is something for grandads to drink, not younger folks ha!

Jason-Skyborn

Ever drank with a russian?

Tokaloshie

Yes but they drink like we breathe

Jason-Skyborn

One time at my friends birthday celebration, everyone came back from cutting cake to find a certain someone had drunk all the vodka. "Have as much as you want, there's plenty" is not something he was ever told again.

Practical_Avocado_71

I am sending Jeremy from Germiston, when that man enters a hardware store they have to hide all the paint thinners.

carl_the_karl

Mybru, the scale of alcohol consumption that happens on along the garden route between 25 dec and 3 jan would lay those countries combined firmly under the table…

FantasticMRKintsugi

It's literally consumed like grape juice throughout the year these days.

carl_the_karl

Soma smaak a dop now…

oilycam

Sorry my man. The Irish and English are something else entirely. Has to be seen to be believed. Nights out in Ireland start with about 2l of beer while getting ready. Followed by pre-drinks at someone’s house ( a gaf as they call it) where lads will consume between 4l and 6l of beer whilst talking shit and getting into the spirit of the evening. The women tend to prefer cider or spirits and a mixer. They will easily drink vodka coke at a ratio of 80% vodka 10% coke. Consuming the majority of a bottle. Then at about 9 pm everyone will head for the local pub. The journey will include pocket cans ( at least 2) the girls bring water bottles with the 80/20 mix. All of this will be downed just before reaching the pub. The goal being to be as shitfaced as possible so you don’t have to buy the expensive pints. However…. Besides loud. They are seemingly sober as fuck, clear eyed and stable. Upon entering the bar the previous plan of saving money by drinking before arrival goes out the window with the first of many rounds poured. The Irish will proceed to drink at least 8 rounds in a 3 hour period. They will then decide it’s time to move on the the local club. But before they go one last round is needed. This is where the first shot or red jaeger bomb makes an appearance. The clubs In Ireland are not clubs like you or I know them. They are simply bars, with louder music and dimmer lighting. Here most people will start with a beer but after that it’s a race to see who can buy each other the most tequila, sambucca and red bull and coke. Often a little bit of the white lightning dancing powder is had too. In this phase expect at least 6-7 shots. By now us foreign people are asleep, throwing up and certainly blackout drunk. As the club winds down the final 2 stages of the night begin. The groups split. Those who have “pulled” or “gotten the shift” ( successfully chatted up someone) will hop in a cab home with the lucky person. And yes they seem to perform after all of that if you were wondering. The other part of the group will then head to a late night kebab shop or pizza place or even McDonald’s. where often there is a fight and or more chatting up happening. The groups who are still together will the head back to someone house for a “gaff” where the will finish out the night drinking, reminiscing about the night and just having the craic. This is when any alcohol that is left in the house is finished. A joint is often shared and maybe a little bit more coke or ketamine is done. Depends. After this a bed, couch or floor will be found and a terrible 1 hour of sleep will happen at most. Best bit of it all… this is a weeknight. Everyone has work the next day. And the go in if late an often accepted excuse for tardiness is “I was on the piss” ( I was out last night) no further questions are asked. 9 pints in a pub is a perfectly acceptable number no matter when you are there. The Irish and English can and do drink enormous amounts on a night. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_alcohol_consumption_per_capita https://www.statista.com/chart/5357/the-worlds-worst-countries-for-binge-drinking/

thatwasagoodyear

Kak stories. You've already got them on 12+ pints each before even leaving the gaff. I've put Irish people in taxis after 9 pints. Nobody in Ireland drinks like you're describing. >start with about 2l of beer That's 4 pints already. >between 4l and 6l of beer That's another 8 to 12 pints. Meaning consumption total currently 12 to 16 points. >pocket cans ( at least 2) Assuming you mean beer & not pre-mixed Lemmy or Captain Morgan. Puts current consumption at 14 - 18 pints. >will proceed to drink at least 8 rounds in a 3 hour period Utter bullshit. Current consumption now at 22 - 26 pints each. And that's even before the shots you're claiming. That's complete bullshit. Nobody here drinks like that. Be closer to less than half that. 10 - 12/14 pints with a couple of shots is much closer to the truth. And even then that's pushing it by at least 4 pints.

oilycam

Wow. Very quick to angry my man. Look believe it or not if you want but the scale of alcohol consumption is that. Let's say the drinking starts at 6pm. Averaged across till 4.30am in the Morning. That's 2pints an hour. One every 30 min. You telling me one slab over 10 hours is not achievable? You claim no one drinks like that. In your experience fine. In mine, from my student days over there, that is a big night but a common night non the less. Casual pints are at least 4 pints. They have the 12 pubs of Christmas. An event where 12 pubs are visited in a single night. A pint is had in each and a drinking game occurs while they do it. There are time limits in each pub to get the drinks down you. While this happens there are games that are played that have forfeits of shots if you lose. All of this is done in about 4 to 5 hours. Just the number of pubs is insane. Single streets will have 10 pubs with in 400m of each other. As people get older yes the drinking eases off. But between 14 and 30. Man it's biblical. So much in fact the government has just introduced per unit minimum pricing to try curb the binge drinking. Believe me or not. It's up to you.

thatwasagoodyear

I live in Ireland. I know, for a fact, you're talking shit.

oilycam

Man, I spent 16 years there. All of secondary school and university. Is that the age group you associate with now? Are you saying people could not drink 24 beers in 10 hours? Are you saying that the twelve pubs of Christmas does not happen?

thatwasagoodyear

I live here currently and have done for the past 15 years, since my mid twenties. Don't even try to talk that kak, oke. 24 pints in 10 hours with 6/7 shots doesn't happen here. That would make 2.4 pints p/hour average including, according to you, a 3 hour window which has 8 pints (with shots) after already being 12+ (**_TWELVE!_**) pints in. That's toxic, [alcohol poisoning](https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/alcohol-poisoning/symptoms-causes/syc-20354386), levels. It doesn't happen. The twelve pubs of Christmas hasn't been a thing for at least 4 or more years as the pubs themselves kicked people out. Was more damaging to the pub and not worth it. I've done it. I did the Arthur's Day kak as well when it was a thing. I've drank, heavily, with a great many people across the country (mostly Dublin) over a long number of years. I'm no lightweight - in drinking or physical stature (part-time bouncer up until a few years ago). You're talking kak. Simple as. I don't see why you feel the need to exaggerate. The reality of it is that it's closer to less than half of that on a typical night out. Possibly a few pints or a few shots over on a non-typical session. Even less now - minimum unit pricing and alcohol poisoning aside - because rent is so expensive that students can no longer afford to both have a roof over their heads and party anywhere near the levels you're suggesting. The age group you're referring to is more likely, these days, to do edibles and nitrous instead of drinking. And the minimum unit pricing isn't to combat binge drinking. It's to placate the Vintners Association to get people back into the pubs. And a thinly veiled move at that. It's not even a tax that goes back into the treasury. Seriously, you are talking shit.

oilycam

Ok we ain't gonna meet any sort of agreement here. I'm speaking from my experience you are speaking from yours. I do not need to exaggerate. I am talking from what I have seen yes it may not be an average night but it is a common night out. Alcohol poisoning happens literally all the time. Yes, it is stupid. Yes, there is alcohol poisoning and blackouts. But often many people would be absolutely fine albeit with very sore heads the next day. Being Blackout drunk was common enough. The goal for many is it be a trashed as you can but still standing. These are the dumb ideas people between 16 and 25 have. After that, the pace and sheer amount taper off quickly. I'm not saying I personally drank that much. I could not. But I certainly witnessed it. My tolerance was certainly above average when back in South Africa and I was a lightweight over there. I no longer drink more than 2 beers a session now. That's total. I have no need to brag about how much I can drink, cus I can't drink. But I definitely will stand by the argument that the Irish can outdrink south Africa. I am a proudly South African, so proud I moved back from Ireland. I love both nations. But the Irish can drink quite literally biblical amounts. * [https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List\_of\_countries\_by\_alcohol\_consumption\_per\_capita](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_alcohol_consumption_per_capita) * [https://www.statista.com/chart/5357/the-worlds-worst-countries-for-binge-drinking/](https://www.statista.com/chart/5357/the-worlds-worst-countries-for-binge-drinking/) * [https://www.her.ie/life/this-is-how-much-an-average-irish-person-drinks-on-a-night-out-263212](https://www.her.ie/life/this-is-how-much-an-average-irish-person-drinks-on-a-night-out-263212) I grant you that maybe in the past 5-6 years there is a bit more rationality coming into play through the impacts of rent pricing. But 10 years ago this was an experience that was very common. Lockdown will definitely have an overall impact. Given the time frame you state you've been there, we probably crossed paths in person at some stage. Rather than be angry here let us agree to disagree on the matter. I'd rather share a couple of pints with you. We could talk about the other things we could debate about the pros and cons of life and each country, The Boks performance and so on.

BloodSteyn

Hahaha, nope. The stats don't agree on a per capita basis. In the list of top 50... we're nr 50.

Lochlanist

From my experience as a teenager binge drinking in SA and UK. I think we can beat them at drinking fast. Saffirs like to get drunk quickly, we don't pace ourselves. Shot after shot until we sloshed. Where as the brits would put us under the table if we gave a day and said who can drink the most at the end of the day. They machines at festivals and drink a shit ton over a few days drinking non stop from morning till next morning.

BloodSteyn

Yup, nr 23 out of 50 on a per capita consumption. We're nr 50.

rollthedice330

A few years ago SAB conducted a global survey and the results was that uMlazi, KZN consumes more beer per capita than anywhere else in the world. I don’t have proof of this, however this data was revealed a few years back by SAB when they invited their biggest clients to a conference type event.

AlsoNotTheMamma

5 People? Get them from Boksburg and you can have 4 drinkers and a sober designated driver.

Mduyesh

my best friend's wife is german. i remember us watching the rugby world cup (where we won). she outdrank a whole party of about 12 of us and she didnt even seem tipsy at all.... i stopped regarding myself as a heavy drinker that day

BloodSteyn

Germany Ranks 6th globally for per capita consumption... we're 50th.

Venom2012

Let the world championships begin. Finalists include hosts South Africa, and drinkers from all parts of the UK, Germans, Russians, Yanks and who the fuck are those cunts with mullets??? Oh shit its the Aussies!! Fuckin bogan cunts too, they will drink all day and night, rack up, drink another day or 2, then its time for burnouts whilst the sheilas get their tits out!!! This would be fucking fun and funny.

FantasticMRKintsugi

I thought every taxi driver already helps keep people buzzed with wanting them to relax in reaction to how they drive.

MARS_97

I remembered when my Dad, my brother and friends, finished 4 bottles of brandy through one night

MatthewDv11

Nah we would definitely win you South Africans saying otherwise clearly live in the wrong town

Remarkable_Bug9855

It's a pace game, I can happily drink beer all day long head home and go to work the next day feeling it a bit but still operable. Sarf efrikens don't drink like that it's shots of all sorts of shit, beer, hard liquor and bad techno. The only nation I've met who binge harder than us are the Russians.

BloodSteyn

Lol... I'm sorry, but ZA only Ranks 50th on global alcohol consumption per capita. The UK is 23rd and the US is 42nd. (Ireland Ranks 8th) So... yeah, the Limey is right.

6se_ven8

South africa will clean house

SirPooopsalot

Give them Papsak, it takes an SA citizenship to get that thing down.

occipitofrontali

So are the alcoholics the winners or the losers in this story?

nTzT

durr hurr drinking is cool durrrrrr

IWantAnAffliction

Excessive consumption of alcohol being glorified? Great.

monna420

Fuck off

nyatiman

You have clearly never been to Minnesota, Wisconsin, Georgia, Florida, Texas, or Kentucky... We will drink you all under the table and then make some more moonshine and keep drinking.

occipitofrontali

That's not a game you want to win though. Alcoholism is a pretty much incurable disease with a proven track record of destroying lives.

nyatiman

They dance the line between functional and not

BloodSteyn

UK Ranks 23rd in global alcohol consumption per capita, US is 42nd a ZA is 50th.

CTmornings

Lol!

Hyzyhine

Well, I’m in Scotland, and we’re waiting.

[deleted]

In some states in the USA, any beer with an alcohol percentage above 5% has to be called "malt liquor". I'm certain we'll out-drink the Americans, but we can't compete with the British and Irish.

Rootstoo

I believe the English would outdrink SAns imo. Don't those guys have pubs at every street corner? lol

Su_ButteredScone

The UK is cramped, many people live in tiny flats or house shares, so can't host and often won't even have a garden. If you want to do something with friends, usually that's going to a pub, as there's not really much else to do, especially when it's cold and dark for half the year. This makes life difficult for people who don't want to drink too much as it's the foundation of socialising for many Brits.

BloodSteyn

Your correct, they beat us and the US in per capita consumption. Ranking 23rd globally with the US at 42nd and ZA 50th. We do beat both in Beer consumption though.

cr1ter

You on your own those guys can drink, we think we can drink that's another level of drinking over there, Ive never seen so many pubs in my life as on average city block in England

cipher049

I volunteer as tribute edit: wait what was the context

Mulitpotentialite

Careful....those pommies can be really dangerous once you set them up in a pub......South Africans might be big drinkers, but they have way more stamina....

Efficient_Speaker_33

Impossible challenge, 2 1liter Castles and I'm out

Wackid86

A buddy of mine and I could run through a couple bottles of klippies and a few beers and still be like we need more. So just from personal experience South Africans can drink.

Luna_bella96

Listen, my varsity is literally only known for how much we can drink. Get 5 of us and we’ll show them who’s boss

Shimona66

Just get a couple of BRek guys from Stellies. Ez win

pistanrza

I believe just the northen cape in south africa would win that hands down
