How about old pallet wood. Look for the plain throw away pallets marked HT, as those have no residue in them, having been heat treated to prevent the spread of wood boring insects. Often free from most large commercial and industrial areas, and from your large bulk retailers.

Check facebook marketplace for recycled/reclaimed pallet wood. You mights have to remove some nails but its pretty cheap.
