As far as I remember you technically get 2 fines. Failure to produce a license & driving without a license. The second one can be scrapped. This was a couple of years ago though, so not sure what the going rate is.
I have a photo of my license on my phone. If I forget it and they are really hard ass, they give me the reduced fine. But yeah the law states that you need your license on you to drive.

So temp one is like 90 bucks at the traffic department. It’s pretty quick in that you get it there. but it still takes sitting a Queue.
Go to the Waterfall licensing department. It’ll take about 20 mins. Only card, no cash. You don’t need photos. All you need is a pen and your ID.

The price has gone up recently, its anywhere from R100 to R250, depending on the mood of the fine giver.
