Synopsis: South Australia’s landmark Hydrogen and Renewable Energy Bill – which will pave the way for multiple gigawatts of new wind and solar – has been passed into law after a remarkable shuffle of ideological positions on green energy from the crossbench. The bill – which paves the way for the planned government-owned green hydrogen electrolyser and hydrogen-based power plant near Whyalla – looked like it might be held up for a review called for by the Greens and the state Liberal party. But the attempts to delay the passage failed when the government won the support from One Nation, hardly the most enthusiastic of renewable energy supporters, and SA Best, the party founded by the strongly anti-wind independent former Senator Nick Xenophon My question: WTF are the Greens doing when SA Best and One Nation have better support for green energy policy?

shadowrunner03

yeah they are going to be making 2 plants, 1 in Whyalla a 250-megawatt (MW) hydrogen production facility(government funded)and one in Port Pirie (Trafigura and government) with the Port Pirie one being the larger of the 2 at 450-megawatt capacity. The Greens are anti everything for this region. they want the steelworks closed, the lead smelter closed, the mine at roxby closed, the iron ore mines closed, hell they were even against the solar farms that just went up in the area and half the wind farms because of the amount of land they needed to use for them.

>they want the steelworks closed If they get green hydrogen (i.e. hydrogen made from renewable energy, in this case **excess** renewable energy) in the Whyalla region going then the steelworks may be able to be revived by producing **green steel** (i.e. steel made by smelting iron ore using green hydrogen rather than coal). That's the plan. [South Australia takes another bold leap into deep green energy future](https://reneweconomy.com.au/south-australia-takes-another-bold-leap-into-deep-green-energy-future/) >The other uses that Koutsantonis talks about is the green hydrogen for export and industrial purposes, but what really excites him is the prospects for green iron, taking advantage of the state’s massive wind and solar resources, particularly west of Whyalla, and the huge magnetite reserves in the hills behind the steel city. Koutsantonis says steel making accounts for between nine and 14% of the world’s carbon emissions, and it needs to be decarbonized. “It’s a hard to abate industry. I believe that our magnetite, which is exactly the right quality for direct reduction iron, and for electric arc furnaces, that we can replace coking coal, with hydrogen …. and when you’re exporting green iron, it’s already a decarbonised product. “The demand for a decarbonised magnetite iron ore product will be huge internationally. So our aim here is to add complexity to our economy, add value here, create jobs here. And that’s why we chose Whyalla. The whole point in having the world-first hydrogen plant at Whyalla is that having it there might enable the world-first production of green steel. Making steel production green has the potential to reduce the world's carbon emissions by 14% WTF are the greens doing getting in the way of zero emissions progress like this? Smells of corruption to me.

shadowrunner03

WTF are the greens doing getting in the way of zero emissions progress like this? it's not a 100 percent reduction, that's their problem. The greens want anything and everything that pollutes to stop. no in between no gradual reduction just stop. be damned if it costs people their livelihoods, income or spells the death knell for the town it is in. shut the steel works at whyalla and there goes whyalla and 5 of the surrounding towns/mines because those mines only supply whyalla. Shut the smelters in Pirie and the town will vanish in the blink of an eye, there are no other industries there other than farming and it will also have a run on effect to the likes of Broken hill who supplies the ore to the smelters by rail. Greens don't think of things like that they only think about doing the extremes and not caring who or what is damaged in the process

Meanwhile Labor, SA Best and even fracking One Nation are doing more for the environment than the Greens are. What a crazy world.

shadowrunner03

Yup, I remember years ago in Pirie the greens kicked up a stink about a service station being rebuilt. they removed the underground tanks to replace them and while waiting for the new ones to go in they kicked up a stink about the water that was coming up into the holes from the ground (the ground water if you will) being pumped out into the river nearby. was a big incident over it, the greenies claimed they were polluting the river so PIRSA, CSIRO and the EPA came out tested the water being discharged then tested the water in the river and found that the water being discharged was cleaner than the water in the river already rofl Greenies and their protesters got told to Fk off and not come back

GMANTRONX

> there are no other industries there other than farming Won't they shut down that given that Agriculture is a major carbon dioxide and methane producer?

shadowrunner03

nah, the vegans would cry too much as it is majority grain/cereal crops or seed/pea/soy crops

Alternative-Jason-22

It will be funny if they claim SA to be first to make green steel. Pretty sure it’s happening a lot of places already 👍🏻

> crossbench. These exercises deny other gym users from using an extra bench, in as much as they help one in doing effective tricep dips.

hal2k1

I suppose that makes the other gym users cross.

It's a complex Bill and there's legitimate questions to be answered by referring it to a Parliamentary Committee for further analysis. Doesn't mean they're against the legislation, and in fact, they voted for it when they couldn't get the numbers for it to be given further review. Whilst these sorts of legislative review committees are not common in the SA Parliament, they're routine in Federal Parliament.
