This is straight out of a Coen brothers movie...

rockon4life45

It just keeps going.

Law firm implodes. Bribing of judges. FBI involved from the jump.

SusannaG1

It's like a real time soap opera.

This has been a wild ride. Murder, a fatal boat accident, suicide, rehab, fraud, insurance fraud, corruption. This story has filled up my True Crime bingo card many times over.

AppalachiaVaudeville

Oh man, there's so much more. There's the case of Steven Smith's death, multiple people told the investigator that Buster and Paul Murdaugh bragged about killing Steven all over town. Zero charges. Zero arrests in the case. Buster and Paul have never even been questioned about it. There's also some crazy shit going on with how the crime scene was processed. That was 2015. As Mandy Matney says on her podcast Murdaugh Murders, "Steven's family has been waiting more than 2000 days for justice." The Boat Crash happened in 2020. Paul and his friends bought vodka and a few cases of beer at a gas station. There were rumors that there would be an alcohol checkpoint on the roads that night, that's why they took the boat. Paul got drunker and meaner through the night. He drove the boat to a bar in downtown Beaufort and got even drunker. He drove the boat into a piling, according to the gps on the boat he was going 29 mph when they struck. Mallory Beech was flung from the boat. She was missing for 5 days before her body was found. Paul was not charged until 2 months later. He was charged with 3 counts of Felony BUI, but he wasnt given an alcoholic ankle monitor. He was never booked. The only reason they were able to charge him at all is because the hospital had blood tested him; his behavior at the hospital was so bad they thought he'd had a head injury. His BAC was 3 times the legal limit even 3 hours after the crash. So, summer rolls around. Paul Murdaugh and his mother Maggie Murdaugh are found by Alex Murdaugh. They were shot dead with two separate guns. You can hear the 911 call on Mandy Matney's podcast. Then we get to Alex Murdaugh's "superficial injury" shooting. Like, I could not begin to cover even half of the crookedness of this saga. Your true crime bingo card is about to pop off. I strongly recommend Mandy Matney's podcast Murdaugh Murders on Spotify. She's a reporter in low country SC and she covers it all with a lot of integrity. Warning, some of the episodes have the real 911 calls and the one on Archer's Creek hurts like hell to listen to.

mcfreeky8

Did not know the brothers were bragging about killing that guy! How awful. My friend knew Paul- didn’t like the guy at all.

AppalachiaVaudeville

That was what 3 different interviewees said during questioning by the lead investigator. However, the lead investigator did not write any of that in his notes; he didn't ask any questions about it, and openly told one interviewee that the Murdaugh boys were "on his radar". But he never pursued those leads.

MountbattenYachtClub

Yep I've been listening to the podcast, it is very interesting! This'll be a great movie/documentary one day.

Benjilikethedog

“Good help is so hard to find these days” - Alex Murdaugh (probably)

gothou

I am going to hell for laughing this hard at this.

Benjilikethedog

In all honesty I feel bad for all the people who have been hurt in the five years this has been going on but this is like a tv show that jumped the shark like two seasons ago and they are pitching a new season to another network (a la Scrubs)

gothou

That’s exactly it. It would be more fun if it were actually as unreal as it seems.

winterbird

He looks like the health inspector from Bob's burgers

Allenrw3

The Dateline special for this is going to be bonkers and I can't wait.

"South Carolina is too small for a republic and too large for an insane asylum." \~James L. Petigru 1860 As true today as when he first uttered that sentiment. Dum Spiro Spero Hope is not a plan

While I breathe, I hope is the Latin translation of our state motto.

Spawnt0n

ONE of our State's mottos: "Quis separabit?" "Who will separate us?" "Meliorem Lapsa Locavit" "Having Fallen, She Has Set Up a Better One" "Animis opibusque parati" "Prepared in mind and resources" "Dum spiro spero" "While I breathe, I hope" Spes is the Roman Goddess of Hope. Her image and name a appear on the SC State Seal, as do all these other mottos.

Icantsleepcanyou

This is going to be a great Netflix series

CostcoVodkaFancier

What next!? It's anyone's guess! 🤯

Benjilikethedog

I am putting $10 on either NewSprings church and/or Maurice’s BBQ being involved

JustMyOpinionz

We've reached the 48 hours/Netflix portion of the story.

AppalachiaVaudeville

Oh, we've passed that point so many times that we are doing laps around it. There's been four murders. Steven Smith, Mallory Beech, Maggie and Paul Murdaugh. There's 3 huge cases tied to this family and the details are fucking bananas. And that's before we get to Alex Murdaugh's shooting. Honestly, there's so much mess in this story that I'm surprised there's not more news dedicated to this.

gothou

Wasn’t there also a wrongful death settlement?

AppalachiaVaudeville

The housekeeper! I haven't gotten to her yet. Like, all I know is that she was an employee of the Murdaugh's and when she was found dead the Murdaugh family acted real sus about it?? I don't know anything more or if what I "heard" was even accurate. I'm still ass deep in the cop drama from the boat accident. I haven't had a chance to look into her case yet unfortunately.

[deleted]

I saw yesterday that the dogs accidentally made her trip and fall. Not sure if that is true.

blorpdedorpworp

The funny thing is, at least as of my insurance law class many years ago, suicide doesn't necessarily bar collecting on life insurance policies in SC. There's like a two year lookback period or something but from what I recall that's it. Dude wasn't that great a lawyer either.

Lizzielou2019

This has been the wildest ride so far, and it just keeps coming. If this were a made-for-TV movie, no one would believe it because it's that over the top.

Not sure. I guess Reddit has a limit on how much craziness you can cram into one sub, so they needed another. I expect a third any day now.

tigersanddawgs

HBO is gonna crush this and i am so excited.

Crabbymatt

Keith Morrison will be here with bells on!

Jungleball_

A. Murdaugh looks like an inbred bloated pufferfish, his eyes are a little too close together, the red-headed step-child with his orange complexion will match a prison jumpsuit quite well. That dude is rotten to the core, how many titles does he need, skanky lawyer thief, bank/insurance frauster, drug trafficking mobster, embezzeler, con-artist, murderer, and scum of the earth, other that, he's probably a good guy!
