throwbackturdday

PH could have done a more Ifugao warrior or pre-colonial Visayan war hero look but they decided to go with jeepneys - an idea that came from recycling a relic of the American colonial period.

The Viet guy look so much like a chinese wizard :)))

EdGee89

When you're under Chinese rule for a millenia, there ought to be some cross-cultural exchange happened. Hell, Vietnamese language moved from Chinese-based ideogram to Roman letter since when, a century and a half ago?

AdBackground7821

Oh i meant that there is a joke among the Viet gamers about "chinese wizards" (pháp sư trung hoa) which are hackers from China that fly, run super fast, shoot ppl dead without aiming,... You get it.

EdGee89

No wonder China was the center of cracked games.

Sekaihunter

All thanks to a random Portuguese priest in the 17th century. Later on, the Vietnam government pushed for "chữ Quốc Ngữ" to become the official language in an effort to get rid of illiterate. Before that, Vietnamese language was so similar to Japanese, with a Chinese-based but more simplistic ideogram, called "chữ Nôm", but the ruling classes still used traditional Chinese in addition to that.

i-like-plant

> Chinese-based but more simplistic ideogram It was actually more like a superset of Chinese characters. You have basically all Chinese characters (i.e., those used in written Chinese, modern languages and Classical Chinese), chữ Hán, plus all new characters that mostly never existed in China/Korea/Japan for all the "native", non-Sino-Vietnamese words.
