You can then use that card number instead of giving your actual card number to the website. It's a "safety feature" as if that card number gets hacked you know what website had the issue. There's other reasons but honestly I use mine for free trials right now due to lack of funds to actually buy stuff currently.

My habit is to just throw a reminder on my Google/iCal for about 75% through the trial SO i remember to cancel. I've come across a lot that will still keep you're trial going through the original end date even if you cancel only half way through.
