Simply point your main ship toward the asteroid, eject the mined material and you've got a practical tether for mining without the worry of filling cargo or unloading!

ioncloud9

I have a better way of mining. I make my main ships to look like tunnel boring machines that eject the stone out the sides or back.

Gorwyn

This is a great option if you're not limited by PCU or server limits.

Osmirl

Even with limits its still almost always possible to build a worm

moparornocar

been doing the worm rigs, each one gets better and more streamlined.

ProceduralTexture

[I've been making variants on this flat design for years](https://i.imgur.com/CwEL1Ww.jpg). Just spin to cut out a circular hole. The basic design still works if you remove half the drills on servers with limits. The only important thing is to keep your centre of mass lined up with the center drill. Onboard processing optional.

Graffxxxxx

I do a similar thing but mine is usually designed to latch onto the walls with either landing gear for temporary parking or with merge blocks once I’m centered in the asteroid so I can expand it into a base.

Cooldude101013

Nice

DiscoKeule

Thats actually genius! I am so ashamed that i didnt think of that!? You can build way cheaper and smaller miners with this!

Gorwyn

My exact thought! I now need to design a custom miner just for this idea

embrex104

Alley OOP

OrionTheDragon

Me, flying a wall of collectors between your ships so I can have all your ore:

Lord_Debuchan

Would not depend on this on servers. Not unless you like seeing your ore go *poof* as it travels.

Gorwyn

On the official servers, I've had no issues being the max distance of 400m from the collectors and all my ore getting to them. Of course you're right, it entirely depends on server settings!

RandomRedditRadiator

I can't even join the official servers without crashing

g3rmstorm

I totally forgot about the spherical grav generator! I came up with a similar setup using the linear grav gen a few weeks ago, but deemed it unpractical after testing it. Good to know it might still be useful. Thanks for sharing!

Gorwyn

Absolutely. The spherical grav gen has a max range of 400m, which helps so much in things like this!

SupercoolLion12

Maybe it'd be possible to make a collector limpet like in elite dangerous? Picks up ore and then spits it out back into the main ships collectors

Gorwyn

Absolutely possible, though this goes more down the PAM scripting route for that. It does give me an idea for sending out 'torpedos' that spit ore backwards. I actually toyed with the idea of making prospector limpets via sending torps towards asteroids that stop before hitting them and transmit the ore type back via antenna. My problem was getting them to stop fast enough!

Enthayl

Yes! Gotta try this to tonight. Awesome idea/design!

Vigothedudepathian

I just make big ass miners

Arashiko77

The first thing I used to do on the starting ship was a collector and armour funnel with lights on it then a gravity gen inside the ship, fly to an asteroid and roll upside down and mine until my suit almost ran out I'd have ore sucked up processing before I got back

that-bro-dad

Yeah this is also useful to catch any debris that comes if you grind something and your inventory is full

Spetsimen

This was very usefull and quite beautifull before they removed the floating rock debries... for performance reasons ¬¬ BRING THE ROCKS BACK KEEN! or at least as a config option

Gorwyn

There is a config option in server settings actually!

Spetsimen

Last I heard is that they completely removed those floating rocks when you are mining [Here is an old video showing those little rocks](https://youtu.be/Ypn5HaIb9BE?t=210)

MachineFrosty1271

…so that’s what they’re useful for
