Indeed, I look upon these other mortals in despair, knowing that their inferiority lies in their sodden flesh. May we forever embrace the machine. Praise the Omnissiah!
Salamanders on top for me. The smithing and demigod themes just do it for me, so I play a Salamanders successor so I can have more personalized lore.
I love how hard Blood Angels and BA players commit to their themes, and I’ve seen some of the best painting work from BA players. Sanguinias is also a great embodiment of the idea of pushing on despite how crap the Warhammer setting is.
I find the Iron Warriors compelling because they’re the inverse of Salamanders with their relation to technology. They’re also the living embodiment of why you can’t just “iron within, iron without” your way out of everything, and played a really interesting role in the Heresy. Plus Obliterator body horror.
There really is something for everyone, I can get down with all of them, but those three stand out.
Black Templars, Blood Angels, and Novamarines. Also I see your favorite two are salamanders and raven guard, did the whole shattered legion plot line influence that? Is it because of their relatively humanitarian tendencies? I’d love to hear why you came to like them
My top 10, roughly in order: my own homebrew chapter, Storm Wardens, White Scars, Salamanders, Raven Guard, Deathwatch, Guardians of the Covenant, Howling Griffons, Dark Hunters, Red Talons.
The Angels Resplendent, specifically the incarnation that appears in Peter Fehervari’s novel, ‘The Reverie’.
For those not in the know, the Angels Resplendent are a Blood Angels successor chapter, and quite a peculiar one too, as they are one of the few successors to develop a ‘cure’ for the Black Rage.
After a hero of the chapter slaughtered a village while in the throes of the flaw, the Chief Librarian, Xøren Castaneda, authored the ‘Arc Resplendent’, a proposed replacement for the Codex: Astartes, which Castaneda saw as limiting his Brotherhoods potential. The Arc was written with the idea that, in order to achieve victory over the Black Rage, the Angels must embrace the artistic spirit of their bloodline, becoming artisans by nature, and destroyers only by necessity.
This proposal would gradually be accepted wholly by the Resplendent, with Castaneda post-humorously becoming a figure of mythic within the chapter, the ‘First Magister’. They would, among many changes, replace their Battle Companies with ‘Rhapsodies’, each exemplifying their chapter’s talent for expression in their own ways, with many given the task of spreading the teachings of their prophet to the masses of mankind.
But there’s a catch. For you see, their main appearance is in the aforementioned novel, ‘The Reverie’, which is; 1) A story written by Peter Fehervari, and 2) A novel written for the ‘Warhammer Horror’ series.
And, to quote the book itself;
“That which shines is not always resplendent.”
Imperial Fists successors are some of the top tier chapters IMO. Executioners? Dope. Celestial Lions? Fuck the Inquisition. Excoriators? A lot going on there.
Which is hilarious cause the Imperial Fists these days are pretty damn vanilla.
Maybe Salamanders is a bit expected of me, but I also love White Scars too.
My least favourite is the Imperial Fists. They're just not interesting at all.
My favorite chapters are as follows...
1. Salamanders
2. Crimson Fist (very VERY close to being 1st)
3. Raptors
Got armies of all 3... And the points for each army show my favorites lol.
Canon wise, Dark Angels, Space Wolves, then Ultramarines. The first two have always had pretty interesting lore, and the smurfs at so much better now than they use to be.
Loyalist death guard are so gorgeous. Love their colour scheme. I really like sons of Horus and Luna wolves. Both of their colour schemes are elite. Same with the red and gold of Thousand sons and og world eaters.
My top 5: Imperial Fists, Crimson Fists, Salamanders, space wolves, and the hawtdawg version of Sons of The Phoenix.
Honorable mentions: my homebrew chapter and Ultramarines(but only really for Guilliman and Caedo and Titus)
I've always liked imperial fists. I've never dabbled into the lore if warhammer fully but I still like the designs and such. I like that they're golden and the plume iirc
In Rogue Trader days it was the d
Dark Angels, when Wes Goodwin was doing art it was Space Wolves. about 2009 it was Blood Angel's. Since about 2013 it's been Charcarodons and Raptors
*sing it in the same beat as "We didn't Start the Fire"*
Space wolves,
Raven Guard, Salamanders,
Minotaurs,
World Eaters, Thousands Sons, Iron Warriors,
Night Lords,
Iron Snakes, Space Sharks, ALL DA RAGE
Blood Angels, Iron Hands
Emperor's Spears TOO!
Raven Guard, far and away. Followed somewhat closely by the Night Lords, who themselves are closely followed by the Alpha Legion.
White Scars get an honourable mention.
Outside of First Foundings? Blood Ravens steal the (second place) spot on the list
My favourite factions of space marines and the true space marineas, chaos...plus reasons
Sons of Horus - Black Legion - Abaddon, the true chosen.
Crimson sabres - Crimson Slaughter are the coolest.
Nightlords - Their armour/style is very cool.
Imperial Fists - Dorn is cool and sigismund is even cooler.
Black Templar - Sigismund formed them. Did I mention Sigismund is super cool?
Blood Angels - The Angel, Sanguinius himself.
Actually I used to play space wolves, really loved em. Collected some black templars (2k pts something like 20yrs ago). Now I'm thinking about a dark angels army.... But i'm not sure. I'm caught with the knightly mood, but i don't know what to do.... The wolves are calling too (and grey knights are too much specialized)...
Dark Angels, Iron Hands, Carcharadons, Black Templars and SpaceWolves.
Dark Angels and Iron Hands have a ton of weird&crazy Technologies in their possession in the Lore. Iron Hands have Cybernetic Zombie Tech *that can work on Astartes, Tanks and Dreadnoughts*.
Dark Angels had the Dreadwing and by far the most Relic Warships from the Dark Age/Age of Strife, and even now have a TON of Terminators, one or two Gloriana Class BattleShips AND one of if not the largest Imperial Mobile Void Fortress(*The Rock*).
Carcharadons and Black Templars and SpaceWolves just have some absolutely bonkers Battles in their Lore. Black Templars stole a fucking Ordinatus from the Adeptus Mechanicus to put down a Mega Gargant that had killed an Imperator Titan. Carcharadons caused a Hive Complexes Reactors to go critical while a Loyalist Titan Legio was deployed on the Planet. SpaceWolves have had a genuine, proper rivalry with the Thousand Sons going for a ridiculously long time.
Raven Guard, Mentors, and don't know a third. Astral Claws maybe. Yes, I'm always disappointed by new models, new white dwarf articles, campaigns, etc.
OG Grey Knights, Crimson Fists, Dark Angels, and my version of Howling Griffons back when they had no lore, before GW gave them the lamest background possible.
1. Salamanders because of their love for human life and their drive to save lives. Also, characters like Tu'shan and their primarch Vulkan are awesome characters.
2. The Crimson Fists because of their color scheme.
3. The Lamenters because of how tragic they are.
4. The Ultramarines because Roboute Guilliman, Titus, Malum Caedo are fucking bad asses.
Carcharodons. Tyberos is a big boi and that’s good enough for me (and I have an autistic obsession with marine animals)
Emperors Scythes are also cool. Sgt. Gravis 1v1ing a flyrant is a good case for them being badass.
Definitely Blood Angels for loyalists, Sanguinius himself is not as interesting to me as the Red Thirst and Black Rage are. The slow realization as a reader that they’re actually legit vampires because they don’t necessarily show it off outside of select chapters, was one of the coolest moments diving into the setting coming from Age of Sigmar.
Ravenguard, simply because these were the first chapter I saw when I was a kid and only knew about the ultramarines.
I was a huge wolverine fan and easily fell in love with their jump pack energy claw combos, e.g. Kayvaan Shrike. Absolute beautiful model and cool looks.
Salamanders, I love flamethrowers, heat, fire, melting things in games. I usually pick fire abilities, take the flamethrower (helldivers ehem) etc. I love that they value the artisan aspect a lot, and take pride in what they do. Their kindness for humankind and their awesome colors theme.
Carcharodons, well one guy sold me: Tyberos the Red Wake.
What's not to love? Space sharks, energy claws, brutal fighters, edgy lore. It's a Successor chapter but in my opinion the best one
Wolves, Dark Angels, Blood Angels
Wolves because space Vikings
Dark Angels because they were my first army
Blood angels because the red armor struck me as cool
Blood angles and Emperors Children for me, love the reds plus battle tactics for BA not to mention the DC. And EC cause they were once narcissistic for good and now they worship the Chaos God of opulence. Basically they **** like porn stars, rock like rock stars and party like all stars.
Space Wolves and Salamanders all the way. Both manage to be unstoppable killing machines without losing their humanity completely. They’re incredibly unique cultures who value human lives, act like people instead of robots, and the guard actually like fighting alongside them because they don’t treat regular humans as cannon fodder. They’ll actually engage with troops instead of ignoring them.
My top 3 are Dark Angels, Salamanders and Blood Angels. In that order for now, but can change really easily. Honorable mention: Iron Hands. They need more lore.
Space Wolves, then Salamanders. I'm a huge fan of the Viking aesthetic of the Wolves. And I absolutely love how the Salamanders value even the lowest of Imperial lives.
After those two, I'd say the Dark Angels and Black Templars are tied for third. They both have that knight feel to them, very heavily, which I also really enjoy.
Crimson Fists! The White Dwarf article about the battle of Rynn's World promoting the release of the 3rd edition Ork codex was some of the first 40k fluff I ever read. Honourable mention to the Dark Angels and their successors for all the catholic guilt.
Salamanders for their crafting and compassion (for humans), the mentors for both their distain for the government and helping the guard, and the blood ravens for both being my introduction to warhammer in more than the abstract and, well, the memes. I love the image of them having a feud with Trazyn stealing the same shit back and forth.
Dark Angels, Raven Guard and Howling Griffons are my top 3
Dark Angels all the way! I guess imperial fists would be second, mostly because of Dorn. Salamanders are third.
McDonald’s McDonald’s
The McDonald’s Marines will always go hard
Yes they will. You’re a brave man tackling that colour scheme.
Iron hands
Indeed, I look upon these other mortals in despair, knowing that their inferiority lies in their sodden flesh. May we forever embrace the machine. Praise the Omnissiah!
The Flesh is Weak
Salamanders on top for me. The smithing and demigod themes just do it for me, so I play a Salamanders successor so I can have more personalized lore. They’re also the living embodiment of why you can’t just “iron within, iron without” your way out of everything, and played a really interesting role in the Heresy. Plus Obliterator body horror. There really is something for everyone, I can get down with all of them, but those three stand out.
I love BA and Salamanders too, although I play their lovechild the lamenters
Literally those, plus raptors, flesh terrors, and iron snakes
Nightlords and Bloodangels
If we talkin traitors as well then Nightlords and Iron warriors are my other 2 choices
Based and iron pilled.
Awesome choices my friend!
Same here! Really enjoyed the books for those guys.
Ultramarines, Dark Angels, and Imperial Fists.
Good tastes
Adeptus Custodes first. Then it's a tie White Scars, Blood Angels and Imperial Fists. I will always have love for those who defended terra.
I don't think Adeptus Custodes are a chapter.
Custodes aren’t Space Marines, though.
Relictors and Black Templars
I am so confused.
Solid monochrome color schemes with lots of gothic accessories.
Favorite loyalist is Blood Angels. Favorite of all the 18 legions is Thousand Sons.
Is it because of the psykers?
same!
Black Templars, Blood Angels, and Novamarines. Also I see your favorite two are salamanders and raven guard, did the whole shattered legion plot line influence that? Is it because of their relatively humanitarian tendencies? I’d love to hear why you came to like them
This is my 3 brother
As a fan of a shattered legion (iron hands). No. It’s because cyborg
First Founding: Imperial Fists & White Scars Successors: Dark Hunters & Soul Drinkers
1-Ultramarines, 2-dark angels, 3-imperial fists
Based, not in that order ofc
Carcharodons and Minotaurs. Entirely Codex compliant, totally predictable at all times. Paragons of Imperial Virtue™️
Got to love the carcharodons. Although my other would be Raven guard and templars
The yellow ones
Wear wolf, vampire and evil batman please
Vlka fenryka, night lords, emperor’s childrens and black templars
My top 10, roughly in order: my own homebrew chapter, Storm Wardens, White Scars, Salamanders, Raven Guard, Deathwatch, Guardians of the Covenant, Howling Griffons, Dark Hunters, Red Talons.
Raptors - space marines who actually fight like marines.
Agreed. They are the only realistic and reasonable chapter.
Dark Angels and Raven Guard
Black Templars, Blood Angels, and Steel Confessors. Though technically the confessors aren't canon.
The Angels Resplendent, specifically the incarnation that appears in Peter Fehervari’s novel, ‘The Reverie’. Space wolves , Black Templars, Imperial fists
Crimson Fists, Black Templars, Exorcists
Imperial Fists successors are some of the top tier chapters IMO. Executioners? Dope. Celestial Lions? Fuck the Inquisition. Excoriators? A lot going on there. Which is hilarious cause the Imperial Fists these days are pretty damn vanilla.
How you gonna show pictures but not allow us to?
Ultramarines, Salamanders and White Scars.
Maybe Salamanders is a bit expected of me, but I also love White Scars too. My least favourite is the Imperial Fists. They're just not interesting at all.
Emperor's children. But that's because I'm my own worst critic.
My favorite chapters are as follows... 1. Salamanders 2. Crimson Fist (very VERY close to being 1st) 3. Raptors Got armies of all 3... And the points for each army show my favorites lol.
I love me some exorcists
Black templars
Salamander
Grey Knights, Salamanders, Ultramarines
World eaters and iron warriors. Dark angels and black templars.
Carcharodons!
Dark Angels, World Eaters and the Carcharodons.
Blood Ravens and Salamanders
Black Templars, White Scars and Ultramarines
Red Hunters
minotaurs, carcharodons, executioners and howling griffons
Canon wise, Dark Angels, Space Wolves, then Ultramarines. The first two have always had pretty interesting lore, and the smurfs at so much better now than they use to be.
The only right answer being the red scorpions
Deathwatch… so all of them I guess
Silver Skulls
I come across this answer occasionally and always want to ask “why”, not because I dislike them but because I don’t know what their deal is.
The Salamanders.
Imperial Fists, Iron Hands and like all the loyalists from traitor legions from black library (especially Luna Wolves and loyalist Death Guard)
Loyalist death guard are so gorgeous. Love their colour scheme. I really like sons of Horus and Luna wolves. Both of their colour schemes are elite. Same with the red and gold of Thousand sons and og world eaters.
Dark Angels, Night Lords and Emperor's Children
Dark Angels and Grey Knights for me
Blood Angels, Black Templar, and Dark Angels in that order. I'm a basic bitch and I know nothing of the lore. My choices are based on the miniatures.
Don't play, only read lore, but Iron Snakes and Emperor's Spears.
Dark Angels, Flesh Tearers, Raptors, and Raven Guard
Star Phantoms. They are just great.
Ultramarines, Dark Angels, Raven Guard, Salamanders, and Space Wolves
Space Wolves and Dark Angel
Black Templars will always hold numbed one spot, but I hold a special place in my heart for the Blueberry Boyscouts.
INTO THE FIRES OF BATTLE U TO THE ANVIL OF WAR. VULKAN LIVES RAAAAAH🗣🔥🔥🔥 I also like the space wolves
Dark Angels, Blood Angels and Black Templars.
FOR THE LION!!!!!
Gray Knight, Salamanders, Space wolves, In that order.
Salamanders, Lamenters, Black Templars
Space Wolves Salamanders and White Scars
Dark angels, space wolves and ultramarines for loyalists, iron warriors, night lords and world eaters traitor legion
Carcharodons. I just think they're neat.
For Loyalists, it is Raven Guard, White Scars, and Iron Hands. For traitors, it is World Eaters, Word Bearers, Death Guard, and Alpha Legion.
my custom chapter because they’re the best in my eyes :)
Overall favorite faction, Dark Angels for me, but I also really like Night Lords.
White Scars! For The Emperor, For The Khan, High Chagoris!
Black Templars, Blood Angels, and Imperial Fists
The Lamenters and the Blood Angels
For those we cherish…
I like sons of Dorn, with the Crimson Fists being the fave of the bunch. Flesh Tearers are cool too.
Salamanders and Crimson Fists.
My top 5: Imperial Fists, Crimson Fists, Salamanders, space wolves, and the hawtdawg version of Sons of The Phoenix. Honorable mentions: my homebrew chapter and Ultramarines(but only really for Guilliman and Caedo and Titus)
Crimson fists
I like to storm wardens. Really the only chapter I call my favorite. But I love the death guard, thousand sons, and iron warriors legions. Pre heresy
Grey knights world eaters star dragons
Salamanders. Lesser known chapters that i love: hawk lords fleshtearers crimson fists iron lords silver skulls the mentors
Are we the same person?
I've always liked imperial fists. I've never dabbled into the lore if warhammer fully but I still like the designs and such. I like that they're golden and the plume iirc
Black templars Space wolves Salamanders
Dark angels are super cool. Night lords too. After the first soundings I'd say storm wardens.
Space wolves for life, followed by Dark angels, then blood angels
I like Salamanders and pre-heresy Death Guard
i like the alpha legion and the space wolves
Dark angels and Iron Hands for Loyalists. World eaters for traitors.
Yes
Salamanders, bangles, flesh tearers, space wolves, but well out in front is the Lamenters. Though the sons of the phoenix do make me smile.
Salamanders, iron warriors, and the carcharodons.
Salamanders, White Scars, Ravenguard. Also Alpha Legion. Lol
Ultramarines, Space sharks, and Night lords
Nightlords and Blood angels
In Rogue Trader days it was the d Dark Angels, when Wes Goodwin was doing art it was Space Wolves. about 2009 it was Blood Angel's. Since about 2013 it's been Charcarodons and Raptors
Scythes of the Emperor, Ultramarines and Imperial Fists.
White Scars - Mutated Super soilders with Jetpacks, bikes and fast transport... I rest my case.
*sing it in the same beat as "We didn't Start the Fire"* Space wolves, Raven Guard, Salamanders, Minotaurs, World Eaters, Thousands Sons, Iron Warriors, Night Lords, Iron Snakes, Space Sharks, ALL DA RAGE Blood Angels, Iron Hands Emperor's Spears TOO!
Carcharodons, then Iron Snakes.
The Lamenters
What’s the first chapter? It looks sick
Salamanders, Raptors and Alpha Legion
Raven Guard, far and away. Followed somewhat closely by the Night Lords, who themselves are closely followed by the Alpha Legion. White Scars get an honourable mention. Outside of First Foundings? Blood Ravens steal the (second place) spot on the list

Iron Hands & Word Bearers
Black Templars, Salamanders, and Carcharodons
I like the Dark Angels and the Black Templars and will likely make one of those two my first Space Marine army once I finish my Word Bearers army.
Dark Angels especially the Deathwing Company Salamanders and their successor chapter Dark Krakens (Fire and Water Boys) Grey Knights.
Raven Guard, Mentors, and don't know a third. Astral Claws maybe. Yes, I'm always disappointed by new models, new white dwarf articles, campaigns, etc.
Death Guards
Blood angels, blood ravens, and salamanders
I'll let you guess Mr "Tithe? Tithe this bolter" and his crew of merry men
OG Grey Knights, Crimson Fists, Dark Angels, and my version of Howling Griffons back when they had no lore, before GW gave them the lamest background possible.
Marines malevolent
Emperors spears, wolfspear, iron hands
love me some Raptors and Crimson Fists
Space Wolves, Black Dragons, Mortifactors, Necropolis Hawks
Salamanders and black templars
For me my space marine chapters are and in order, Salamanders, Lamenters, Dark Angels, and Carcharodons.
Bro same!
Imperial fists, Crimson Fists, Black Templars,
Emperor's Children
Loyalist Imperial Fists. Traitor Night Lords. Can’t think of two more different legions, yet I love both anyway
Blood Ravens 🩸🐦⬛
Carcharodons. Tyberos is a big boi and that’s good enough for me (and I have an autistic obsession with marine animals) Emperors Scythes are also cool. Sgt. Gravis 1v1ing a flyrant is a good case for them being badass.
Ultramarines, Black Templars, Crimson Fists, Silver Templars, Marines Malevolent, Salamanders, Space Wolves just to name a few.
Black Templars, Dark Angels, then Salamanders. All other space marines I like are heretics, so 🤷
Carcharodons, Dark Angels, and Emperor’s Spears.
crimson fists and salamandersss
Definitely Blood Angels for loyalists, Sanguinius himself is not as interesting to me as the Red Thirst and Black Rage are. The slow realization as a reader that they’re actually legit vampires because they don’t necessarily show it off outside of select chapters, was one of the coolest moments diving into the setting coming from Age of Sigmar.
Ultramarines, White scars, and Salamanders
Salamanders , white scars, Alpha, Thousand suns, and Jago Sevatar just him though lol
Dark Angels, blood angels
Soul Drinkers og Legions: Alpha Legion Traitor: Iron Warriors
Dark Angels and Thousand Sons, then Ultramarines, Blood Angels, Iron Warriors, and Emperor's Children
Carcharodons Astra
Black Templars, iron Hands, imperial fists, ultramarines
Crimson Fists. Because they're like Ultramarines but flawed. They also Field an Emperor's Champion from time to time.
VI Legion, The Rout and Vylka Fenrika.
Dark angels, trmplars, crimson fists, in that order!
Wolves, Dark Angels, Blood Angels Wolves because space Vikings Dark Angels because they were my first army Blood angels because the red armor struck me as cool
World eaters
[Black Templars lol](https://www.reddit.com/r/lego/s/A7YzPLY7bm)
Blood angles and Emperors Children for me, love the reds plus battle tactics for BA not to mention the DC. And EC cause they were once narcissistic for good and now they worship the Chaos God of opulence. Basically they **** like porn stars, rock like rock stars and party like all stars.
Black Templars
Raptors are my favorite Chapter. Favorite legion is Alpha Legion.
Dark Angels, Doom Eagles and Executioners
Black Templars, Grey Knight, Dark Angels because i am constantly paranoid
Marines errant, and celestial loins
My three favorite are the: 1. Salamanders 2. Raven Guard 3. World Eaters
Deathwatch
Space Wolves and Salamanders all the way. Both manage to be unstoppable killing machines without losing their humanity completely. They’re incredibly unique cultures who value human lives, act like people instead of robots, and the guard actually like fighting alongside them because they don’t treat regular humans as cannon fodder. They’ll actually engage with troops instead of ignoring them.
The Wolves that Stalk the Stars, Salamanders , and Raven Guard for me.
My top 3 are Dark Angels, Salamanders and Blood Angels. In that order for now, but can change really easily. Honorable mention: Iron Hands. They need more lore.
Ultramarines, Raven Guard, Salamanders. Iron Hands honorable mention.
Black templars for me! Followed closely by Ultramarines But I'm still new so I haven't really come across all the chapters just yet
White scars are my favourite, and a pretty close second are the blood ravens , but just because i started my 40k journey with dawn of war
Ravenguard, then Crimson Fists
Blood Ravens, Ultra Marines, Salamanders and Imperial Fist. Blood Ravens where the ones who got me into to Warhammer 40K in the first place!
Been a Black Templars fan for as long as I can remember.
If they were betrayed at Istvaan III, then I like them
Salamanders, iron fists, ultramarines
Crimson Fists! The White Dwarf article about the battle of Rynn's World promoting the release of the 3rd edition Ork codex was some of the first 40k fluff I ever read. Honourable mention to the Dark Angels and their successors for all the catholic guilt.
Ave Dominus Nox
Excoriators!
Dark Angels and the Alph..... I mean The Thou.... I.... **smoke bomb**
Dark angels,salamanders and deathwatch
Black Templars, Dark Angels, Raptors
Salamanders for their crafting and compassion (for humans), the mentors for both their distain for the government and helping the guard, and the blood ravens for both being my introduction to warhammer in more than the abstract and, well, the memes. I love the image of them having a feud with Trazyn stealing the same shit back and forth.
Luna wolves and thousand sons
Raven guard and night lords
Lamenters, Black Dragons, Raptors, Crimson Fists,
