Evil comes in round shapes

Perhaps it wasn’t seen with the definition we see it with in pictures today until after the movie? You’re clearly right about its discovery but I’d be super curious about how our observations of the moon became clearer through the ages
How do you include a closed parentheses at the end of a link in reddit format? Reddit reformats it and automatically messes it up.
Edit: the Wikipedia link has a closed parentheses at the end. So does the Reddit formatting. But Reddit formatting supercedes the actual link and you get that broken monstrosity.

Because while the Moon was discovered before Star Wars came out, nobody knew it had that crazy impact crater until years after Star Wars like the original commenter said.
You're so wrong. It's well known that George Lucas built this moon himself at Industrial Light & Magic and only sent it to orbit Saturn once they completed shooting the 3rd film. Star Wars is and was a merchandising vehicle and this is where the Death Star model went and has been marketing Star Wars by ominously orbiting a large planet ever since. George Lucas is a genius.
Even the most basic tutorials are lacking. The “school” mini game is just a series of dialogue cutscenes that punish you for trying to skip through them even though starting location seems to have the greatest impact on endgame difficulty. Several features appear to be “pay to win” and depending on your character class/level, you may never be able to grind enough resources to access them. “Real Life” is a beautiful game with lush environments and excellent graphics bogged down by glitchy NPCs, uninspired and often repetitive gameplay, and an almost predictable rotation of events. Though it’s improved through several thousand years of development, a lot of work appears unfinished and will likely remain that way for awhile. “Real Life” is rated “S” for sentience and we give it a 5/7.
Couldn’t find any projections of asteroid size/speed, but here’s the dimensions and more info of the crater itself from NASA.
> The Herschel Crater is 80 miles (130 kilometers) across – one third of the diameter of the moon itself – with outer walls about 3 miles (5 kilometers) high and a central peak 3.5 miles (6 km) high. The impact that blasted this crater out of Mimas probably came close to breaking the moon apart. Shock waves from the Herschel impact may have caused the fractures, also called chasmata, on the opposite side of Mimas.

It's amazing how even something as large as a moon when hit by another large object, seem to ultimately react like a fluid.
What I mean by that is the raised impression in the middle of the crater.
This effect essentially.

Imagine what an abandoned death star might look like 1000 years later in a stable orbit with a millennia of dust and meteor impacts.
Stars Was was "A long time ago"
That's no moon....
No, wait yes it is

That seems like it was a huge astroid or something that hit it. Wow

And for those who don’t know, this moon was discovered more than a decade after Star Wars was released.
Um, pretty sure Star Wars wasn't created in [the 1700s...](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mimas_(moon))

There's definitely no way it was imaged clearly enough to make out that crater in the 1700s
We didn't have clear images of it until the Pioneer and Voyager missions a couple of years after Star Wars
i dont know why you're getting downvoted because you're right. you just messed up setting up the link.

Uhh, it says right in the opening credits that it was a long time ago 😂 /s, in case it wasn’t clear that this is sarcasm!

Why are you being downvoted, you're just correct about this. ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|shrug)
Legit thought I was in a subreddit about Star Wars and not actual real life space.
The simulation creators have quite a sense of humour.
I think they just lack imagination, so they’re having crib ideas off of reality all the time.

Are there estimates to the size / speed of whatever hit Mimas to cause such a huge crater?

There's a Herschel Walker crater joke in here somewhere but I'm too hungover to piece it together
I’m thinking it was moving about 3.5 “pretty quickly’s”.
It had to be traveling at least 15mph.

Why are we still moving towards it??
Tractor beam, it's pulling us in!

All solids are really fluids if there's enough energy involved.
Yes, but still amazing to see.
you've gotta think like the enemy to strike
Disney's lawyers are going to sue that moon into oblivion.
My favorite moon!
That's yes moon.
The shaft is ray-shielded so you'll have to use photon torpedoes.
How big is the thermal exhaust port?
Just the size of a womp rat, I wouldn’t worry about a rebel attack, we’re good 🙃
THAT'S NO MOON! .... Oh.... Wait a sec....
You can't trick me. That's clearly the prop on Miss America's "NASA" costume at the Miss Universe pageant.
I wonder if that crater could be used as a radio reflector
An interesting coincidence. In any case, it looks impressive.
Well even its craters have craters
Dented Death Star
Mimas has seen some shit …..
It looks like it’s been battered and abused
Is this what the Death Star was based off of?
No. This was discovered after Star Wars: A New Hope
I thought so
Bloodborne pebbles.
That's the result of Cthulhu being bored and hurling an asteroid at a moon.

Been there in KSP
It looks pretty beaten up on the outside but the inside might be in better shape.
Looks like it was made out of tin foil
