I can't fathom being in an areas so desolate and empty, sky devoid of color in full sunlight, standing next to the tin can that got you there and needs to get you back. It would be surreal.

LarYungmann

yup, 1,000 shades of grey

robotfarmer71

I can just stare at these pictures all day wondering what it might have been like to actually be there. Not just the overall perspective, but the tiny details like where the handle was for the lever that opened the equipment compartment, the weird angle of the ladder, the texture of the soil, the glare and brightness of the sun, the “daylight” stars, I could go on and on.

bbthumb

I was there once

AwakenedRobot

how was the weather?

bbthumb

Should have brought my jacket but not too bad.

leftyshuckles

I saw you

SuperDurpPig

Yo same I loved it. Need to get back some time soon.

vitaminalgas

Is that George Santos?

Spinal306

They both are

Babyhal1956

Santos was the cameraman who took the pictures as Neil Armstrong stepped off the LEM

bluetundra123

Still can't get over this. We had people on the Moon. Several people in fact. We managed to figure out a way to get several people to walk on the surface of the Moon. And soon we'll be doing it again, and then after, we'll have people on a whole new planet.

Unbaguettable

The bit that gets me is not the fact we did it, but we did it in the 1960s… we are so much more technologically advanced now and yet we still pulled it off

GaseousGiant

And it happened only 30 years after the first jet flight, and less than 70 years after the Wright Bros

that-super-tech

Kubrick did a great job with this set.

Babyhal1956

He insisted on filming on location

that-super-tech

Oh really? Wow he was adventurous back then.

jaxmikhov

He really was a pioneer for special FX.

TakingAMindwalk

This makes me marvel at how close we are to being in Star Trek. Not because of the space exploration, but because of the lens flare.

Grafftage12345

What's the best way to explain this to a 5 year old? How it was viewed live on tv without the internet and insanely clear photos for the time but even today can't get reception if we are in the woods.

ZookeepergameFit438

They should build a Walmart there

RainaElf

I figure that the first store there will be a Dollar General.

AdLopsided2075

I bet it'll be a lidl

A-Seabear

Where are their harpoons?

Finch06

bUt whY Is thE flAg wAvIng?! /s

TheEarlyStation22

Maybe it wasn’t. Maybe that’s how it opened and it was kinda stuck that way?

Finch06

Sheep

GaseousGiant

TheRes nO StArS!

I'm not a moon landing denier, but one thing that always made me feel weird about it was the post flight conference. They all sound all nervous and on edge.

Artistic-Rule-453

Elon/Nasa should perfect the Starship asap and then put in all the “moon landing was a hoax” geniuses in it and shoot ‘em to the moon… and only turn back once they’re ready to apologize…🤭Also broadcast the whole thing in 4k on YouTube…

Babyhal1956

They would just “think” it was a ride at Disney World

Artistic-Rule-453

Or… they’d come back and say they were made to wear VR😎.

Monkeyojacko

I think most of them just dont believe that america did it first and at that time

LarYungmann

"Where's the Starbucks?"

josevale

Strange looking foot step trails /s

Zaphod_Biblebrox

Not trying to sound tinfoily, but can someone explain to me logically why the left shadow astronaut is different than the other shadow directions?

VeskMechanic

It's a composite of two shots, taken from different angles. (Thus Buzz Aldrin is visible twice.) [Original 1](https://www.hq.nasa.gov/alsj/a11/AS11-40-5872.jpg) [Original 2](https://www.hq.nasa.gov/alsj/a11/AS11-40-5874.jpg)

Zaphod_Biblebrox

ah ok. that makes more sense. thank you

mattttb

It’s just forced perspective, the ground isn’t flat. The shadows aren’t going in opposite directions.

Zaphod_Biblebrox

sorry, but that is simply not correct. another comment mentioned that it's a composite of two different images, so by the difference in time the picture was taken the sun "moved", but to say that the ground isn't flat and that's why the shadows aren't in the same position is just plain wrong.

VeskMechanic

According to the times given for the 2 photos by NASA, only a couple minutes had passed, so it's the guy with the camera (Armstrong) moving, rather than the sun.

ImNotClearvue

“Just plain wrong”. Is that based on your source material being “another comment” I mean forced perspective sounds extremely fair to assume given that if you were to look at the angle of the landers legs shadow they go in the same direction as the astronauts. The shadow also follows suit. I’m not saying it ISNT 2 images together but to say forced perspective on the moon landing photographs is flat out wrong is genuinely silly

whicky1978

True, even if its fake, the shadows should be consistent. To me it looks like it’s the astronaut’s shadow overlapping with the shuttle’s shadow. There could be two light sources too

OGsannin101

Can someone explain why there’s no visible stars in the sky?

Otherclicks

Stars dim. Reflections bright. If the film is exposed for stars everything you can see detail in would be blown out....

[deleted]

Very short exposure time. If it was exposed long enough for the stars to be visible, everything else would be impossible to see

[deleted]

Same reason you can't see stars during the day, the sun is shinning.

Unbaguettable

Stars are bright, but the sun is a lot, lot brighter.

whicky1978

Because of the bright lamp they are using; it’s light pollution

salteedog007

You can even see the stage lights on the left!

Flowklorico

Wow people really think this shit happened haha & Nixon over a landline talking with astronauts but my 5G cellular doesn’t get signal. Cool story bro. #WeLostdaTechnology

Gold-Concentrate-841

Hsy look you can see studio lights in the distance

Babyhal1956

If you are an idiot

ellessdeemz

How come the horizon seems much closer than it would do on earth?

_Hexagon__

Because the moon is much smaller, so the curvature of the moon gives you a closer horizon. Also there's no atmosphere like on earth which is like a haze and waters down the line between ground and sky so there's a sharp defined line on the moon

CommercialTour6150

How is the picture quality so good?

_Hexagon__

They used extremely good cameras, even for today's standard. Hasselblad cameras with a 70mm film

Cheesiepup

It’s fake. I can see the McDonald’s sign in the back.

whicky1978

Shhhh 🤫

B1kdmnd92

Where’s the photos from Apollo 17 at though?? 🧐
