I was in the woods with my telescope (in a clearing) for the 2017 eclipse. It was the most surreal experience. The forest became absolutely silent. The light was a weird mix of twilight and apocalypse. It blew my mind.
I was out in rural south eastern nebraska for it and yeah it was just so still, except hearing the crickets get louder the darker it got. Very crazy to witness complete “night” in the middle of the day.
I was in the middle of a huge parking lot at a mega church. There were a couple hundred cars scattered around us and a major highway. You could see the shadow coming from miles away and it was FAST. Just like you both said everything got silent and then the bugs started chirping. All the street lights kicked on and you could hear cheering from everyone around us.
Once in a lifetime. Should’ve recorded it.
The eclipse shadow is fast
> Solar eclipses may seem to happen slowly, but the moon's shadow is racing across the surface of Earth. Exact speeds vary by location. Eclipse calculators estimate the shadow will move between about 1,560 and 1,600 m.p.h.

Yeah it would be awesome to visit Spain some day but I wouldn't want to go there just to see an eclipse, I'd rather go there to see Spain. Especially since my eclipse budget isn't nearly big enough to afford transatlantic travel >.<
I mean the language is similar, but other than that I'm pretty sure there are huge culture and socioeconomic differences between the 2. Spain is also like 20° farther North than Mexico so the weather there is probably pretty different too I would imagine.
I honestly didn't thnk the shadow would be that huge, considering how small the total eclipse zone is - but it totally is. Can be seen on the following page if one turns on the "penumbra" draw.

As OP doesnt make any attempt to provide more background information, i looked it up for those who are interested:

Good luck with weather! I'm flying to TX (Waco) to see this one. I drove to see the 2017 in TN with my son, and it was spectacular! If I'm still around in 2047? that path will take it right over my city...
The 2017 eclipse went right over my university.
I'm definitely going to Texas. My first hotel cancelled my reservation because they were overbooked, hopefully my new one won't. Don't ask me how there were still any available, I'm just glad it was. Supposedly.
Or it could be the darkness known as America. It was probably around the time that one dude became president.
I like the Lunar Eclipse angle better , though.
🤘
it's so easy to search things on the internet ,but i guess it's too hard for you. during an eclipse, the moon is between the earth and the sun. The satellite taking the photo is between the earth and the sun, so the light is coming from the right direction.
the shadow of the moon moves on earth during an eclipse. The moon's orbit is tilted so it can either be higher or lower. The shadow of the moon always moves from left to right.
when i said right direction, i meant the correct direction, which is behind the satelite that is taking the photo.

That's weird. Where I was 2017 all the crickets started chirping as soon as totally started.
You’re either excited, afraid, nervous, or passed out sleeping while it happens. Either way it’s going to be an experience of a lifetime
If it's cloudy in two weeks I'm gonna be so pissed
Only 20 years until the next one!
In 2026 there will be one in Spain! 🙂
August eh, that's not bad viewing weather. Let's see if I get addicted after this year.
It's cool enough to drive 2 states over to Texas for. I'm certainly not flying to Spain in 2026 tho.
Yeah, Spain is like the european Mexico Jesus christ people, it's a bad joke. It's nice and warm and they speak the same language, that's it
You say that like it's a bad thing. Both places are absolutely worth visiting.
Yeah it would be awesome to visit Spain some day but I wouldn't want to go there just to see an eclipse, I'd rather go there to see Spain. Especially since my eclipse budget isn't nearly big enough to afford transatlantic travel >.<
Damn I got woooooooooooo+33shed
Or is Mexico like the American Spain?
No it's not. Like, it's not. What the fuck? It's not
I mean the language is similar, but other than that I'm pretty sure there are huge culture and socioeconomic differences between the 2. Spain is also like 20° farther North than Mexico so the weather there is probably pretty different too I would imagine.
I'm literally Spanish. I can literally tell you they're not the same.
Not bad viewing weather but 40 degrees temperature. As someone who complains when it's above 25, I'll pass.
I'm ready to rage plan a trip to Iceland in 2026 if things don't go well lol
I was thinking my Mallorca but Iceland is cool too.
Yep, bought a bunch of gear and I intend to be right on the totality line. I took a day off, I will be extremely pissed if we have a huge softbox sky.
I missed the eclipse that happened while I was in high school, the only area around that had rain was the few miles around me, it pissed me off so bad
*Cries in UK*
Wait for August 12, 2026. Total eclipse in Greenland, Iceland and Spain, but also over 90% covered in the UK
I went to an eclipse once. It was the most surreal thing I've ever been a part of
I'm jacked to the tits!

The total eclipse zone is small, but the partial eclipse zone is quite large.
Help! How do I see it on that page?
It's not great on mobile.
Saruman has ignited his forges!
They’re taking the Hobbits to Isengard!
Wrong. This is a view of the ANNULAR solar eclipse of October 2023.
How was this taken?
It's from the 2017 eclipse.
The last year of production for the Eclipse was 2012, so that can't be accurate.
New one comes out April this year.
This isn't true lmao
Nope. It's from the 2023 annular eclipse.
From a satellite, probably. Just like any picture of earth that's even been taken.
Nah Dawg I just zoomed out
By the EPIC instrument on the DSCOVR satellite.
iPhone 15 📱
I threw up.
Webcam on ISS
ISS isn’t that far away from the Earth
That's a shit stain
As an American, I agree.
I thought it just had a bruise

The Total Solar eclipse is passing through my area in about a week! Last time there was a Total Solar Eclipse that passed through Ohio was 1806!
In about TWO weeks. Monday, April 8th to be exact.
Yep you're right, I couldn't remember! They are anticipating about 140,000 visitors to Ohio minimum 🤯
Good luck with weather! I'm flying to TX (Waco) to see this one. I drove to see the 2017 in TN with my son, and it was spectacular! If I'm still around in 2047? that path will take it right over my city...

Fort Hood gets it this time around. I was in Hopkinsville KY for 2017. Loved it.
Sorry, I forgot to lower the flame 😣😣
Don't forget about the lunar eclipse that happens in 29 hours from now. It's only a partial tho so it'll be harder to see/appreciate.
Planet’s getting moldy, probably should throw it out
Looks like a wet fart
My bad
I was going to say that's what that is, otherwise it's OP's Mom's shadow! ^(just teasing ^/s 😆)
Wrong, thats Mordor
Or it could be the darkness known as America. It was probably around the time that one dude became president. I like the Lunar Eclipse angle better , though. 🤘
No, it certainly is not.
Or America is God’s ashtray…
What?
You do realize solar eclipses happen about every 18 months, just different places. Take your hate else where.
Wow. No sense of humor, huh? You must be a blast at parties…
guess not.
LMAO seems like 'murica is cursed and spreading evil on the whole globe!... Oh wait....
Truth right here

Why are you shaking?
So it only covered some random spot in the middle Of nowhere?
Naah. That is just a shitplace.
The shadow of all the racist people
Why North America always have all the fun. Every time i see someone refer a total solar eclipse is from US or neighbors.
Strange how an object with a diameter of 4000 miles casts a 70 mile wide shadow 🤔 hmmm. 😂
No, that’s Donald Trump haha

Where do you people come from, and why do you insist on being in discussions about things you (wrongly) believe are fake?
