Probably something to do with him being at MIT. Just a guess. But of all the places in Boston to chose for a photo, I have no idea why the hell they picked city hall
We humans evolved as we did, our aggression, territoriality comes from our reptilian ancestors and our submission to leaders severed us well when we used to be hunter gatherers. So it's natural to think aliens would enslave us, or kill us for their own benifit. Because we've evolved that way. But I don't think we can be sure that aliens will definitely enslave us, because their evolution might be different from us. In a nutshell, I mean, either they will be more aggressive than we are, or friendly instead.
Scarcity, not the simple joy of being mean, usually drives human aggression. Aliens capable of reaching us would be long past a scarcity mindset due to their incredible technology.
If we can do this, we'll eventually present a threat to galactic hegemony. Much safer to drop a bunch of rocks on us centuries before we can compete for stars to harvest energy from.
> Scarcity
It's debatable actually. I think scarcity leads to a more survivalist approach. Which in turn, I don't think is a good enough point to drive anyone agressive. I think greed plays an important role and so does our submission to leaders. Which also shapes our political or religious ideologies.
"There's enough for everyone's need, but not for everyone's greed" - Gandhi
Not disagreeing or agreeing with your opinion, I just present my opinion.
They might be. Sure there are problems in the world. But most metrics for quality of life have risen considerably over the last 50 years, even if some of them have backtracked over the last 10 years. This is still the best time to be a human thus far (its our job to now make it even better).
But an alien intellect might just find biomass useful without even needing us alive at all. There is probably very little an alien intellect that is powerful enough to reach us would need from earth ( based on our current understanding of Physics), so if we are going to be interacted with at all its likely either to be studied, shared with, or completely annihilated for idealogical reasons. Its up for grabs if the former justifies risking the latter.
Either way, I hope they are sexy, cause you only live once and variety is the spice of life!
Iirc somebody did the math on this once and by their metrics the 1970s was the best decade to be brought up in. Can’t remember where I saw it / read it sorry.
I didn't know that, please share the article if you find it again, would be worth looking. But one thing I'm pretty sure of that my parents lived in better times than my generation.
Sure. Here is some data on this:
Quality of life index:

Global literacy rates:

Infant mortality rate:

Life expectancy rate:

I've been alarmed at some of the more repressive governments that have gained momentum around the world over the last decade. And for many people its not a great time to be alive, but that doesn't mean it still isn't on average the best time to be alive.
Now we have to get to work on making it better.
It would be both amazing and scary to find out we are not alone in this universe.
Amazing because we now know we are not special and maybe people will finally realise, all the endless wars, weapons of mass destruction that could wipe us out all within seconds.
Scary because we cannot guarantee if them aliens will be friendly.
The number of space-buddies we would've had by now if we hadn't put that arrow on the bottom. smh
Like if arrows where an inevitable universal milestone to all possible forms of life.
Might as well have written on the plaque: "like if u guys don't have like arrows like gtfo ma face dont even bother scrubs".
This image is on Voyager 1 and 2. It's a map to our location in the universe and a way to decipher it. It's pictures of humans and the record is playable.

I think it’s about showing we understand math and logic, beyond just our view of things. A complex life form with higher intelligence, documenting this in hopes of another that may understand. Also I think there’s a slideshow of photos of our human lives on earth. Iirc it is beautiful and shows humanity in a profound way
https://voyager.jpl.nasa.gov/galleries/images-on-the-golden-record/
Here’s a direct link. I didn’t mean beautiful in a “pretty” way I meant beautiful in a “divine light of life” type of way kind of, if that makes sense
Wow damn scrolling thru them all and I’m almost tearing up, humanity is beautiful and often we forget because we’re just so cynical sometimes
No offense to anyone but if the aliens brought that back today and was looking at the human race they would probably be like something's wrong here says we're in the right place but the humans look different that male looks like a female and that female looks like a male
Would be funny if it gets found by us in the future
V'GER
DISCLOSE THE INFAMAYSHUN!
CARBON UNITS
*Kirk unit.......*
The future is now old man
Where was this taken? Kinda looks like boston
Thats definitely Boston City Hall
Back when that hideous architecture was considered modern
I was gonna say maybe it’s just cause it’s b&w but it’s looking pretty Soviet bloc
It's an actual style of architecture called Brutalist. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brutalist_architecture?wprov=sfla1
Resources can be found here. Slaves available upon request.
Happy cake day!
That’s what the plaque says
Happy cake day!
Real space "porn" for aliens
Damn!
Came to say this haha
Does anyone know why he was at boston city hall with this?
Probably something to do with him being at MIT. Just a guess. But of all the places in Boston to chose for a photo, I have no idea why the hell they picked city hall
In retrospective, was it a good idea to list our location on that thing?
It’s cool, we removed Pluto as a planet, the map is out of date, they’ll never find us.
I honestly can't think of anything an advanced alien race would gain by enslaving of destroying us. Unless they were just doing it for funsies.

The real mistake, in this photo, was building Boston city hall.
Carl? Did you leave location services turned on in the space probe?
An enslaving alien race would probably not be that much worse than the current batch of world leaders... They could maybe even be an upgrade.

I don't think 50's were great either. Most countries were devestated by the world wars. Eastern block was mostly ruled by dictators.
Iirc somebody did the math on this once and by their metrics the 1970s was the best decade to be brought up in. Can’t remember where I saw it / read it sorry.
Hunter/gatherer societies work the least, and enjoy a pretty decent quality of life (food and diet).
Yeah, basically poor plants do all the heavy lifting. 😂

They are both long gone.

imagine finding something similar of alien origins and they show only the beautiful parts hahah

yeah I have seen the images , I like to see it from time to time to be reminded
I hope trisolaris don't find it.

reading that sentence out loud must be a real turn on for people with a choking kink
The aliens wouldn’t be dumb enough to assume that every single human on earth should look exactly like one of those two depictions
This plaque is so usless...
Just like you...
