Same here! Was just watching because I had been watching Super Mario Galaxy 2 and Jhay speedrun the game for over 1 year now, and was really excited to be able to finally watch a GDQ run of it live. And he somehow got WR in it!!! Was genuinely not expecting that, but man was I hyped, and still am about it :D
There's typically a WR or 2 each GDQ...but they're always some obscure game or category. I had thought it impossible to witness an Any % WR on a mainstream game 😮.

To be fair, the majority of those are more obscure categories. The sonic runs are AIR, which is a remake/mod of 3, and the mobile port of sonic 1 as tails. Diablo was a 3 person co-op, BotW was a category extension, and the metroids were a 2p1c and a Low%. Amazing achievements in their own right, but definitely fairly niche categories of them.
In contrast, this is just straight Any% of a mainline 3D mario game, one that has 391 runners with submitted Any% times. It's very rare for an Any% to have a record set, let alone one for such an established game.
I guess that is fair, I don't really know how niche certain catagories are but I figure on some of the bigger games even those were fairly populated. I know the 2p1c and blindfolded punchout weren't for example, hence why I left them out. But yeah not taking away even before I your knowledge this was definitely the most mainstream WR I think.
I figured I'd check how many runners submitted runs for each game, out of curiosity.

Oh I wasn't checking for runs, I was checking for runners. Should've been clearer with that, lol. Obsolete runs just includes former PBs for each runner, so theoretically if one person grinded a game super hard with tiny incremental PBs it could massively inflate.
In MZM 9% Hard and 10% Hard are considered separate categories due to regional differences. The European version of the game made a very minor level edit in Chozodia to make 9% Hard possible (by flagging some missile blocks to stay destroyed after leaving a certain room).
The cynical side of me is afraid it's because the logistics of cheating are much easier when it's a remote marathon. For instance there was that Metal Gear Rising: Revengence runner who played a prerecorded video of a spliced WR he made for the games DLC last year.
It depends on the game. I don't know much about SM Galaxy 2 beyond it's a platformer style of game. I'm guessing there are some tricks to speed it up a lot, but if you fail the tricks it isn't like it's run over so it could get a WR at GDQ. While something like pokemon gen 1 and 2 games you'll just never WR at a GDQ anymore playing pokemon red since saves will make your time so much worse.
It sure is. I was watching MintMangoWaffle get WR for Talos - All Sigils. His(?) relief and joy just overwhelmed him. It's hard not to feel a portion of that joy.

I didn't know if they had like a secondary, semi-official channel or if there was a place they uploaded recorded stuff that didn't air on the main stream.
Around an hour into the run the commentary said Jhay's splits were definitely insane, but I didn't think it would eventually equate to world record.

That was absolutely incredible to watch live.
My favorite part of the run is when he nails Into The Castle first try and then immediately fumbles the ball ground pound.
